OTA UK branded firmware - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Went back to 4.0.3 stock rom and phone did an auto software update to stock 4.0.4 rom UK branded 27/07/2012.
ecmm brick bug app shows - no.sane chip and chainfire's got a brick app shows - unknown but not one of the reported chips with bug.
I am crapping it as have had a brick with leaked lpq5 firmware.
All I want to do is use the temporary cwm method to flash superuser and install titanium backup and all my apps.
Can anyone advise if what I suggest will be safe?

You can flash the latest siyah kernel because that's safe from brick bug kernel (3.5.2+) or if your that worried just go back to 4.0.3
EDIT: Do not use temporary cwm on 4.0.4!

Removing Root + CWM recovery

Does installing a stock firmware remove root and the CWM recovery? ( I use CF-Root)
YES, it does....

You could flash a wanam stock.
It retains root

If you are doing this for warranty, remember to use triangle away to reset your flash counter

I'm a complete noob to devices outside of the HD2, but I found it extremely simple to root my Dad's phone with CF-Root. Now he's received an OTA Software Update and I'm not sure whether or not it's safe to do as in the changelog it says that OTA support was added in v6.3 whilst I used v6.0 as soon as I saw it in the Portal. I don't really mind if I lose root, but is it safe to update? Or should I flash a custom JB ROM instead?

If you want to root your device using temporary cwm etc check here
If you want to mess with your phone and will probably be wiping your device, flashing ROM etc, I will advice you to flash a custom kernel first e.g Siyah, Speedmod, N.E.A.K etc
If you fail to follow this advise, you might end up with a hard-bricked device

How to go back to Stock ICS 4.0.4 from CM10 @ JB?

Hai, my SGS2 now on x-treme jb aokp 1.1 but i want to go back stock ics 4.0.4. Is there any suggestion for me or i just use odin & flash stock firmware?
I'm not very clear in this matter.
Please help me out.

You just need to flash stock rom through odin.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
You'll just flash an ICS firmware
It doesn't really matter what customROM / firmware you came from, you can just directly flash it. go to download mode and flash an awesome fw hope this helps

Rather than making a new thread, I hope you don't mind me asking a question in relation to your initial question.
Is it okay that I install an ICS 4.0.3 as opposed to installing a 4.0.4 one? I wish to avoid the eMMC bug that I dismissed by installing a different kernel, I would rather avoid 4.0.4 until there's an official fix. If so,
Download 4.0.3 stock ROM
Flash using Odin
Back to stock ROM, kernel and in root?

[Q] I am new to s2

I buyed used i9100 3-4 days ago, he's old 20 days and everything is working, phone is rooted too, i think with CF-root method, before that i was reading a lot about s2, and android, i have good knowelage in android and phones but much more safer is to consult with other peoples unless i'm not 100% shure about what i'm doing, so my question is:
i want to do factory reset so i can customize phone how i want and delete all pics, musics ... i should go to Settings > Back up and reset > Factory data reset, it's easy but i have question: i know for emmc bug, but i'm not 100% shure what he's doing, i know he is on stock 4.0.4 kernels, i have Model: i9100, Android version: 4.0.3, Baseband version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913 [email protected] #3, Build number: IML74K.XWLP7, is safe to do factory reset ? and do i have emmc bug with that kernel and stock 4.0.3 rom ? Thanks and sorry if my english is wrong

If you're on 4.0.3, you dont have the emmc bug. but you can always download the got brickbug app from the playstore and check, just to make sure.

I don't get that, my old s2 is on ics rooted with c.f. root. I've checked & the brickbug app says I have the bad chip but you say 4.0.3 is safe???

To be 100% safe, first flash a custom kernel like siyah via Odin. Then you can factory reset your phone without worrying.

From what I'm given to understand the app just checks the firmware and compares it to a known list of 'bad' chips.
If you're on gingerbread you surely have nothing to worry about.
However if you plan on rooting your phone don't directly flash siyah. There are guides in the general section. Look through those.

My phone is already rooted and the thread in post 5 is talking about 4.0.4 firmwares. isnt there anyway to solve this emmc bug problem?
brickbug ONLY applies when wiping data on STOCK 4.0.4 kernel... If you are on gingerbread or ics 4.0.3, you wont be affected.

I want to flash siyah kernel, what is a better way, to flash it via odin or to install it via recovery?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Flashing via recovery won't increase custom binary counter.
I dont care for that because my flash counter is already increased so i have yellow triangle but im ok with that, if i flash siyah v4.1.5 can i back to samsung stock kernel and how?

Sure, by flashing stock firmware via Odin.

[Q] Updating With Another Country's Firmware

Hello, please, is it possible to download another country's official firmware from Sammobile and install on my Galaxy SII? Will I also be able to get official updates (like jelly bean 4.1.2) and install them in my country whenever updates are available in that country since i'm using that country's firmware?
I am still stocked with Android 2.3.5 and I really need to upgrade it to Android 4.0.4.
If it is possible to do so, please recommend a country from sammobile.com that I should download and install the firmware (preferably android 4.0.4) to my Galaxy SII. Thanks a lot.

try Kies for an update. Almost all countries have been upgraded to 4.0.3. and please don't install 4.0.4 it has got a super brickbug.
First of all, I really appreciate your quick response and advice.
When I used to try and update via Kies it tells me I'm using the latest update + I live in Nigeria and the latest update for Galaxy SII in Nigeria on Sammobile is android 2.3.5.
I recently upgraded my phone to the unofficial Galaxy SII's jelly bean, after I noticed a few irritating bugs, I decided to switch back to my stock 2.3.5. But there is one problem though, the baseband version is still I9100XXLS6 (the unofficial jelly bean baseband version), therefore, my Kies application cannot recognise it, it always says " Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies" when I connect it to Kies. How can I change it back to the original baseband version to be able to use Kies?
There are pictures to confirm this. Thanks

those few irritating bugs have been fixed by different developers, you can try a rom based on XXLSJ, which have these bugs fixed. Or you can even try Siyah Kernel v6 http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
How did you reverted back to Gingerbread. The correct is, Flash Official firmware download from www.sammobile.com with ODIN.
I reverted back to gingerbread using the backup I made previously before updating to the unofficial jelly bean. The backup still has the correct baseband, but I don't know why the unofficial jelly bean baseband version is still here. Do you think downloading and installing that from Sammobile will solve the baseband version issue? Thanks

yes, flashing with ODIN will fix it, but it will wipe your current OS. Or else just flash your pervious modem with ODIN or through CWM.
Ok. Is it advisable to download another country's firmware? For instance one of India's Android 4.0.3 since you said 4.0.4 has issues that might cause break. Thanks

to fix baseband issue, just flash the modem which you had previously.
yes you can install 4.0.3 from any country. Just change the CSC with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manniakk.cscselector&hl=en

Hi, I downloaded the official Android 2.3.5 (I9100XWKJ1_I9100OJVKJ1_I9100XXKI4_HOME.tar.md5 and SS_DL.dll) from Sammobile. It's quite different from the usual CODE, CSC and MODEM files from other firmwares. Please, how can i install this on my Galaxy SII using Odin?
