how to apply new ROM? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just rooted my device succesfully and i have been at that menu where i can choose to upgrade my rom from SD card but now i cant get it back.
So all in all i have a rooted device with standard rom installed but i want to use the rom thats in a zip file on my sd card

First of all, wrong forum!!. This should be in Q&A. If you have a rooted device, download a rom of your choice and copy it to your sdcard. Then reboot into CWM and flash the zip file, choose "instal zip from sdcard". There should be installation instruction in a rom thread that you choose. Search, search and search again. Everything is here just need to do a wee search.

Wrong section and what you asked can be found by searching and reading. Thread locked.

ClockworkMod Recovery SucessFULL are we ready for Custom ROMS ?

I did not wanted to hijack Konush thread..
Questions
1-After successfully flashing Recovery, are we ready for vibrant custom roms when they become available ?
2-Would any of the Europeans roms (Galaxy's) work in our Vibrants ?
3- There are TWO option in this recovery for the "ZIP" files.
Do we " apply sdcard:update.zip ? or install zip from sdcard ?
Thank you all..

#1
yes
#2
possibly
#3
you can do either
This may not be the right forum to ask those questions, beware you may get flamed by someone else, a mod will probably move this to general, so in the future you may want to post questions in general
#3. The only difference is that "apply sdcard:update.zip" the package that you're trying to flash HAS to be named update.zip or it won't flash.
install zip from sdcard: the .zip can be named anything and it will be in a list and you select what .zip you want to flash.
Same functionality but it just doesn't have to be named update.zip to flash and agreed with what defconoi said.
My apologies to MOds by posting in the Dev section, did not mean it just realize it, Last question Does it matter in which card I put the flashing file in ?
we have two external ?
Thank you both.

My assumption is that it'd be on the internal (/sdcard) because your ACTUAL sdcard is on (/sdcard/sd/) but that's just my guess.
I'm not too sure though, we'll see what happens when a custom ROM is actually released. I'm sure that someone will ask the same question.
It will be on internal because the recovery cannot access the external sd card.
Hi,
If we do not install clockwork recovery, can't we flash any rom as long as it is named update.zip.
Or to we need clockwork recovery to flash a different rom?
Thanks

YOU need clockwork recovery to flash another ROM. At this time, I don't believe there are any 100% confirmed working ROMs for the Vibrant at the time, you could try some European ones but you'll most likely encounter some problems somewhere along the line.
Modaco's rom allegedly works pretty well (A few nagging things, but works)

One more quick N00b question...inside

I downloaded Mcnut R13 and unzipped it. Where do I find the pit file and the tar file for PDA using Odin?
You dont unzip it, and you dont need odin to flash mancut, download rom manager and flash it with rom manager.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I see. But is there a way to flash it using Odin? I would like to learn how to use it in case I soft brick it.
So I do have Rom Manager installed already but never used it. It doesn't need to be unzipped?
And how do I change kernels using Rom Manager and Odin?
Please read my sticky's before you continue and mess up your phone.
I've read this guide already. It doesn't really explain how to use Rom Manager. And if it somehow it does and I missed it I apologize.
I'll keep searching in the Q&A forum.
It has the steps to rom manager step by step... not trying to sound rude, just making sure you do not F up.
Check your PM

My apologies. Instructions are there and I read them last night. I just didn't remember reading anything about if the file containing the rom needed to be zipped or unzipped. Unless it was in one of the videos...
Just tried to install from the internal SD card. I placed the unzipped folder in the internal SD under a folder named R13. Then I checked the option to backup the rom but not to wipe data.
Long story short, installation aborted. Message was: Can't open /sdcard/sd/Mcnut_R13.Zip (No such file directory)
Someone told me it had to be unzipped first. But if it's looking for a file that ends in .Zip, maybe this is wrong.
no you don't unzip it at all...
download rom
put it on root of sd card (i.e. not in any folder)
boot into clockworkmod recovery via rom manager
if you get booted into stock recovery just keep choosing 'reinstall packages' until you get into CWM
make a backup of your current rom in case things go wrong
once thats done, choose 'install zip from sdcard' (4th option)
choose 'choose zip from sdcard'
navigate to preferred rom to install and push the power button to flash it
wait for it to finish and then reboot your phone
enjoy

[Q] Trying to install new rom

So, i am trying to load this new ROM (the Vicious rom). I go into clockwork recovery & select install zip from sdcard, then i choose zip from sdcard, & instead of loading the new rom it says: Finding Update package, opening update package, installing update package, then it is complete....how do i get it to load the rom?
additional info:
I cannot install any ROM now, it runs through this short update process I explained above. Am I missing something that allows the rom to be loaded?
That's how roms are installed. Did you reboot after you installed the rom?
i had issues with clockwork so i used team win recovery here-- http://www.mediafire.com/?ye85b3n1f72nen3
Maybe try this one and see if it helps just put on root of sd card
make sure it is named PG05IMG.ZIP go into the bootloader
by shutting down phone rstarting by holding down volume arrow then power till it comes up in bootloader and do the update

Either you are choosing apply sdcard:update.zip accidentially instead of "install zip from sdcard" or you still have a PG05IMG on your sdcard? If you still have that img on your card, you will have to hook your phone up to your computer > boot into recovery > mounts and storage > mount sdcard > enable usb and find that IMG and delete it. Then go back do your wipes, and install zip from sdcard.
Try redownloading the ROM in case it may have been corrupted during the original download.

A few questions about installing Cyanodenmod on my SGSII

Hey all, I posted this on CM's forums as well but haven't gotten any replies so I figured I'll try this forum as well. I'm a new to mod installations so forgive if some of these questions are redundant/plain stupid. I figure it's better to ask a stupid question though, than to brick my phone.
Anyways, here goes:
So I have installed ClockworkMod (free) and created a recovery.
I copied a stable version of CM into my root folder (update-cm-7.1.0-GalaxyS2-signed.zip)
Now to install it do I go into ROM Manager, and under ROM Management select "Install ROM from SD Card"? Then check off the 3 options and hit ok, and reboot into recovery on the next popup window?
Finally...when the phone reboots into "Android System Recovery"..I see this:
Android system recovery <3e>
Enter: OK Key, Select: VOL UP/DOWN
reboot system now
apply update from sd card
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature...
E:signature verification failed...
Installation aborted.

So do I go into "apply update from sd card" and select the CM zip file?? And after that I see there's mention of another zip file simply labelled "update.zip"...its also in my root. So I use that AFTER CM.zip right?
And finally...whats up with the errors there while installing the package? Is that ok?
Thanks! And sorry if this is the wrong forum. I didn't spot a specific mod-related forum here.

Use this link here, i think your problem is you afe flashing with rom manager you should use CWM for a first time install and you need to flash twice back to back to ensure a clean install.

Possibly soft brick S3??? Noob needs help!

First of all I've read some posts but haven't found what I need. I know you may read this kinda post all the time from unexperienced people but we are all learning. This is the deal, I was trying to flash Cyanogenmod 10.1 in my s3, I saved the rom file and the gapps file in my sd card. After I do all the whipping (data+cache+delviks cache) and go to find the zip files they are not in .zip format so de recovery mode doesn't recognize the files as such. So I just went back and tryed to reboot the phone again but it gets stucked in the Samsung Gt I9300 image. I know this may be really simple to fix but I'm a noob! Btw the phone does enter both, recovery and download mode. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
"after I did all the whipping" LOL
what do you mean, they're no in the zip format? did you unzip them?
sd card
push the file into ur sd card either throw recovery or by sd card reader and boot into recovery then chose the zip from ur sd card and install

My bad... English is not my first language,I'm still learning. I already solved the problem by restoring a previous nandroid backup. Everything is fine now. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Thanks for your answer. The thing is that the files were not in the zip format and I couldn't flash them in the recovery mode. If I compress them into zip format would it work??

First , you might try to wipe. if it does not work either, please use 2nas android flash tools
2nas.com
Provides :
1: Integrates Unbrick / Flash ROM / Root All-In-One.
2: Use the same protocol as ODIN, but 2nas is more user-friendly and easy-to-use.
3: Cloud based database to flash your android phone with correct files(ROM, etc)
4: Automatically download necessery files to flash, and check them with SHA1, it's safe for your phone.
5: Store all downloaded files in local disk, under a good directory structure, it's usefull when you have several phones.
