Battery Temperature Help? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hello, I don't know if this has been answered but I got my after market battery today and it works really great. Getting awesome battery life but it seems like this battery doesn't get as warm as the original Motorola one that came with my Photon. I am worried about it because it is a 3800mAh battery and I haven't seen the temperature get past 80.6*F all day. Is this normal, I mean it does feel as hot at the other one does but how can I really make sure I am getting an accurate reading on the temperature? No matter what I do, I tried using wifi, music, cpu test, and still never gets above that temp. Lowest it goes is about 77*F. Thanks guys.

My stock battery averages about 29 degreess Celsius(84.2 F) when idle/low use. What are you using to read temps? I'm basing off of SetCpu's readings. And try streaming videos or something over 3g that would be rather intensive and *should* heat up your phone quite more than just listening to music or using wifi to browse internet. Then see if your temperature reading increases. After a few minutes of streaming youtube over 3g you should be able to see a clear difference in the temps if you are getting accurate readings.

I did the same recently and noticed it would only get hot when it was overclocked to 1300 and the screen was fully bright. I wouldn't worry too much over it. As time passes and you've calibrated the battery correctly it will all level out.

Even when streaming over 3G, still says the same. I am back on the stock battery.

Its overheating on the stock?

Yes, it gets about 115*F or hotter. LOL But now I got a different cover on it and it seems to stay under 110*.

Battery drain+Heat=Wifi+Stock Browser, please read

Hello again dear xda members
I've been using S II for over 2 weeks now! I get the following(which many of you do get also). When I turn on WiFi and start surfing, the phone starts to overheat and battery is drained like a juice.
Well, after a long study, I've found out that it's the stock browser's fault!
Yeah! I opened WiFi, surfed a little and it started to heat up! Well, I was trying to download something, and since stock sucks at downloading( except if you add to it an app from the market called Downloadfiles) I opened DolphinHD!!
What I saw, or felt-whatever-, was just
After 5 minutes, the phone cooled down, temperature became normal and of course battery was less consumed!
So, to all people who have heat issues, it turns out(at least in my humble opinion) that it's the stock browser's fault!!!
Any thoughts anyone? Similar experiences?
I've been using it for 10 days and experienced no such overheating, but battery time should be much better.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Really? It doesn't overheat never? even not when playing games?
I thought mine was faulty, but I went to couple of stores where they have it open for customers to play with, and I did the same as mine and it started to heat up!
Mine heats up a bit after playing a game or running a certain app for a while, but I never experience overheating with the stock browser. Though you should take in to consideration that the GS2 is a thin device, the CPU is close to your hands. Most phones also have to exessivly keep searching for connections because it is weak or something is blocking its way. The transmitting/receiving device is located at the top along with the CPU so it'll tend to get hot. Most smartphones do overall.
Also, the phone gets hotter while using it connected to a charger just because the battery is filling up the same time you are using it. Also, take in to consideration that no patch for true dualcore support has yet been released nor announced. Just some factors why the phone heats up.
thanks man!
Well, heating up is normal-as far as I read in here-... But when using Stock Browser, I'm talking about overheat! really! I believe it's a bug, since as said, nor Firefox, Dolphin and Skyfire(I use all of them) produce that issue! And I disabled flash content(thought that might make it better) but it was the same! Don't know!
Anyways, thanks for answering!
OVer wifi I have no problems. Over 3G is another story! and playing games is another story. It warms up every 5 minutes while playing games.
Yours too huh? well, mine does that on WiFi!
What is Overheating? How do you know it is overheating unless you know the temperature of the battery? Well OP and other posters who are saying the phone gets overheated please mention the temperature of it. The ambient temp of Europe/USA is 20-25°C Max, and if the device runs even cool then it will have temp around 30-32°C, that is much higher than the ambient temp and probably that's why you guys are feeling the phone is overheating but in fact it's not. Here in Calcutta, ambient is 32-33°C and the Phone temp in normal is the same, so we/I don't feel it's overheating, only when I surf net for an hour straight with charging then the temp rises up to 44-45°C, that's when it could be said that the phone is running on high temp, still for the hardware we are given 45°C is not hot.
So before saying the phone is overheating please check the battery temp.
Regards.
how do I measure battery temperature?
Ok, Battery life widget?
I'll measure then I'll let you know!
There is a reason stock browser uses more battery and heats more. It uses GPU to render pages more quickly! But for me even on stock it is not that hot, more than on other phones, but thats what you get for a thin phone.
Maybe somone will test battery life with stock+GPU and dolphin browser with no GPU. Maybe the difference is not that big at all, maybe just GPU heats more than CPU but uses same battery.
now let's not forget android doesn't have graphics acceleration, and without it the GPU has to work harder which generates more heat

Ok, I get 41 to 45 °C degrees!
So, no overheat just heat!
So, based on what you're saying, this is normal?

Your ambient is 27°C, right? So it's normal to me. Anything less than 50°C should be OK, imo.

Summer in Greece and sub-30-degrees Celsius don't go together. That's why we're hot!
Anyway,****ty joking aside, inside a bus today, under the sun with an ambient temperature of about 35-36 degrees(dunno how you put the degrees symbol pal ) and with my GPU overclocked at 400MHz with 1100mV using tegrak overclock ultimate,I played some Angry Birds and, although the phone reported no more than 44 degrees,it was very hot at the top.
My opinion? If you(or me obviously) manage to somehow burn/fry something, make sure to do it so bad that it doesn't even respond to Chuck Norris' roundhouse kick! That way maybe Sammy won't notice...Shush!

Does everyone's Atrix get really warm?

I was just curious if everyone's Atrix gets warm in the lower part of of the phone?
I've read on a few forums people just chalk it up the the dual core processor, but mine gets warm even if I'm doing something as simple as just reading Fox News. I don't know how that could be taxing the processor that much. I don't have much else running in memory which could be using a ton a resources.
Mine doesn't get hot, just pretty warm. I guess I am just suprised cause it's the only phone I've ever had that gets warm like that.
I tried our display model at work and it gets really warm also, so I guess exchanging my phone for another would probably amount to ending up with a new phone that does the same thing.
I was just wondering if it is common with everyone.
Yes, its a dual core phone so its to be expected.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Yeah, mines gets warm too. Maybe try downloading SetCPU and limiting the processor's speed if you can't handle the heat
Anyways, its to be expected especially while running games or watching movies.
How hot is too hot? With fauxs newest kernel mine gets up to 70c
OCd at 1.3 on idle is at 51 celcius. I think its acceptable

What are normal temps?
Also is there an app which will let me see the temp which works in the stock firmware?
I dropped back to the .7 kernel. My processor was getting way too hot at even 1.2 when under load. 70C+ is not good for any processor. Back to 1.1 for me.

Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
51C at IDLE?! Mine is at 42C!
What OC you have shouldn't matter, as your phone doesn't run at maximum frequency with maximum voltage unless you are actively using it!
But to answer the OP's question, my phone gets pretty warm too. I just read the temperature after watching a 5 minute HD video, and it was at 67C. If you are using the cellular radio i'd imagine it can get even warmer.
That means the dualcore is doing its job
Using setcpu and CPU stress testing & quadrant benchmarking for almost 2 hours straight one day, mine never exceeded 60C.
I think the 1.3OC(v1.9) kernel is wonderful, I've hit 4.9k scores on quadrant standard. It seems to be more friendly with the combination of setcpu & CM7 also, the later kernels kind of crippled my setcpu profiles and would cause my launcher to FC(I suspect?)
Phone idles at 34C.. probably lower because screen off my max freq is 216mhz(AMAZING BATTERY LIFE) in fact, i usually keep my proc throttled down to about 400mhz and don't crank it up until i need it(again. AMAZING BATTERY LIFE)
honestly... at 400mhz the phone still quite snappy.
51c? unnaceptable.
mine runs at about 30c most of the time.
however i did notice a strange issue that the phone gets alot hotter after you charge it and then unplug the charger, a reboot usually fixes this. i make it a habit of rebooting immediately after unplugging the charger and my phone stays most of the day between 30-33c
this also helps the battery life a lot, i can usually get by the end of the day with 60 to 80 percent left.
If you change your oil every 5k miles and put air in the tires and keep your fluids topped off you should be to.... ummm wrong forum. I though this was the nascar forum.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Mine average on 58C to max at 62C.. Idles at 41C.. It's warm! I got used to it.
Has anyone considered the longevity of the phone and battery from the unit staying warm all the time?
Mine is pretty much warm the whole time it is in my hand when being used. Outside in the sun taking pictures even more so.
I don't think I have any runaway processes. After I restart the phone, I use a task killer to kill everything it boots up with initially. Everything which is needed, like about 4 things come right back up, so I excluded them. But I don't use to to autokill stuff. It's just when I boot up I noticed there are like 30 things started up for no reason being as I just turned off the phone.
I figured I know which ones need to be up cause they come right back up after being killed. But things like Google+, Maps, Gallery...etc...which I don't think need to be running at bootup I kill.
+1 on going back to 1.1... OC'd at 1.3 was killing battery and heating up like crazy! OC'd to 1.1 have no problem with UV, heat, and get 30+ hours battery life with moderate use.
It's not just the CPU/GPU usage what's heating up the Atrix...
That specific area of the Atrix contains CPU/GPU and also the GSM/3G/Wifi and Bluetooth radio chip, which can get really hot while broadcasting voice/data. Even if the radio is idle, if you are on a bad reception area it will be constantly searching for coverage and switching from 3G/4G to 2G, which creates heat and battery drain.
My .2 cents

[Q] Anyone else's phone running hot?

I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?
Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!
yeah mine gets hot near the camera during use but i dont think its a problem
I use a battery monitor.
From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.
I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?
Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.
The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.
My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.
Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.

Good to know. I can never charge my phone with 4g turned on for more than 10 minutes. It always starts blinking. It would suck to say that my phone is defective. I keep waiting for a fix, but I might have to call this one in and get a new one.
Where does this 3.8 vs 3.7 rumor originate from? I have a 3.8v and have had ZERO issues with heat, what defines hot? Physical heat or CPU/Battery temp?

I agree, every phone I've had has gotten to highest temps using GPS. Its just part of computers, everything gets hot after high usage, its normal. If your phone gets too hot, it'll shut down like a computer would or a rezound OC'd.

Yeah, thats not a rumor. Do a search for 3.8v and see all the posts that have been over this. 3.8 has major issues with heat, if yours doesn't consider yourself one of the lucky ones. Also if you do root, stick with the GB roms. ICS roms have problems with charging past the high 80's for battery capacity.

Heat
When I called Verizon to see what they could do about my Rezound running hottish (gets to 110 after running Sentinel 3; around 113 in navigation; idles in the 70's), I was told that Verizon and HTC have never heard of these phones getting hot, or heat being an issue, but they had helpful hints:
1) If you are streaming, stop streaming for a while
2) Put on a Vinyl case
3) Buy an extended battery
4) Hard reset
5) Realize it is a computer without a fan, it will get hot
So there you have it. Per Verizon, they don't get hot so your initial premise is apparently wrong. jk.
I tested 2 refurbs. First one shot up to 130 almost instantly, and that's when I learned what real heat was. Second one mirrored my current Rezound # 4; idled hotter on side by side, but temperature increased less when running the same apps. Decided to return both refurbs and keep my current.

Think its time for a new battery?

I haven't got over 2 hours of screen on time in a hella long time. In my stats I'm not getting any strange results, screen is getting 60% and everything else is under 10% which is normal. I was getting very good battery life in gingerbread but ever since ics roms came out I haven't got anything good and its been a while. Why I think it might be my battery is because if its charging it will reach 110 degrees even if I'm leaving it alone. Screen brightness is under half and I've dropped about 5% just typing this out. Under moderate use the phone will seem to heat up more than it should, so I'm just looking for a little input

I have seen many post that people talk about heat and battery drain after flashing an ICS ROM... So it might not be your battery, what ROM and kernel are you running does it do it with screen off and in deep sleeping? I have some more battery drain on ICS but never heat issues even watching HD videos wont heat up the phone. It sounds like you have an app spiking your CPU, try tuning on Show CPU usage in menu / system settings / developer options / Show CPU usage at idle with wifi on mine was approx. around 0.08/1.00/1.20 - 0.50/1.50/2.0 I hope some can give you more info how to check CPU info... GL here is a link to DL CPU Spy it might be able to help find the problem....
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy&hl=en
Check for better ROM/Kernel combos
Having flashed a lot of ROMs and Kernels, if they don't work well together (and sometimes if they do) your battery life is severely impacted. Since the change came when you updates to ICS, it seems likely thats the cause. Try finding kernels that allow you to use SetCPU or another regulator. You can set power modes to conserve battery, set a scheduler, and most importantly, set up profiles to keep it from heating up!
In short, search the forums for good ROMs, there are no shortage and some are designed to be battery friendly, best of luck!
PS. sometimes after flashing a new ROM, your battery calibration will be off and you'll get wild fluctuations or usage. Some say you can do a process to recalibrate, others say it doesn't work, but it doesn't hurt to try it yourself.
