Rezound MHL Performance - HTC Rezound

Im looking to score a mhl/hdmi adapter for my rezound to stream netflix/HBOgo/ HD movies I have on my SD card to my HDTV.
Anyone here have experience doing this? Hows the performance and video quality?
I've read that the phone has to power/run two displays(the Rezound's screen & the hdtv) so im thinking performance will likely suffer running HD movies as I've read threads on other forums saying that playing games/emulators on MHL are pretty much unplayable with pretty craptastic framerates.
Just want to verify before I go and spend some $$$ on a cable I'll possibly never use. Thanks.
Edit: Whoops thought I posted this in Q&A. Sorry mods. Please move if you can.

Hbogo is blocked on the mhl port for me. Also, the adaptor I got only charges at usb rates so keep that in mind when selecting one. I was in the middle of an nba game when it died. Scared me cuz I thought the phone died from getting too hot cuz it wouldn't t turn back on.

You got it right, both screens are always on when running hdmi. Also, only sense 3.6 roms got mhl working for now.
As for the performance, no it ain't affected but battery is

Not all mhl models actually work. I use this one from amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006V7F380
along with this charging cable
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004GF8TIK
The phone can run a bit hot but it works.
I usually lower the rezound screen brightness in mx player, and also put the phone into airplane mode. both seem to keep the battery temperatures lower.

Thanks for the replies and tips.
So what im getting here is that battery still drains while running hdmi even though it is plugged in to a usb power source because it only charges at usb rates. I can live with that as I already slapped an Extended battery on my rezound and it lasts me all day easily with heavy usage and 4g.
Only thing that worries me is the phone getting hot. I've never really had problems with my rezound getting hot but i can see that running hdmi and the screen being on will put some stress on the battery. Not to mention i'll probably be streaming 4g and running hdmi at the same time!
I've got a 64gb Micro sd card coming in soon so i'll probably just take some movies with me instead of streaming if it becomes a problem.
I found this mhl adapter on Ebay for $7. Might just try that since i already have a micro usb and hdmi cord.

And the cheap one I got for 5 bucks is flawless.

Congrats on getting a good one. I have seen in multiple threads of people having problems with some of the cheaper versions. Five bucks isn't much, but neither is 35 for an HTC 12 pin one that charges your phone at 1 amp while using it. To each there own. Getting a cheap one off the net, paying shipping, and then buying another one makes some people upset . I was just trying to present my experience. If I was looking into performance like this thread suggests, I would take the one that charges faster, and doesn't need a power supply even if it cost 30 dollars more. To each their own....

MHL Adapter Question

When using the MHL adapter, is the whole screen mirrored or is it just some apps like gallery/youtube?
Also, does Cyanogenmod (AOSP) work with it?

It is full mirroring of the whole screen great huh? I found that out here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXotbjcB6xA
And as far as I know Cyanogenmod does not have it yet but i'm really sure it will soon.
Yup, it does full mirroring, so you can play games as well
The bad part is that i got the ikross mhl adapter and it seems to be defective or smth, cause it keeps disconnecting for no apparent reason (even if i don't touch it).
My question is which mhl adapter is worth buying? I'd really like one i could use while moving the phone. Should i just go with the original one from htc? but that's a bit expensive. Any suggestions?
I have the T-Mobile brand and have no issues with it. It's been carried around in my laptop bag for a while, still works perfect. $20 from the store and around $27 shipped if you order from their site

Which adapter charges as well?
All of them should, that's their design. Mhl plugs in to the phone, charger and hdmi plug in to the mhl. I know that atleast the T-Mobile version does, all should though. It mirrors everything, and charges my phone just fine at the same time.

Got my MHL for $15.73 shipped from Monoprice. Been using it everyday since the day I got it to stream netflix and other TV/movie sites from my 3D or off one of the flyers in my house. It's probably been in use for 60+ days straight for about 5-6 hours each day, maybe more... I don't have cable or satellite I'm actually thinking of ordering another one maybe two just in case this one breaks or gets lost.
The monoprice adapter works very well. I've had no connection problems - and I get a great picture depending on the app. Diceplayer works particularly well for putting out HD video.
The only possible drawback is that the monoprice adapter limits you to USB charging, not AC charging - when you use it. So if you're streaming while outputting to the TV, you'll still lose a small amount of phone battery.
On another thread specifically on the MHL adapter charging topic - no one confirmed whether the other chargers were registering AC charging or not. That might be the one advantage in getting another brand.

Thanks - please do. People in the other thread assumed their phone was charging whether streaming or not - but couldn't confirm with testing values. I thought my phone was charging as well - until I installed a battery monitor and checked. After using many - Battery Monitor Widget appears to work the best on our phone.
If you could test your MHL adapter while streaming, and report back the charging rate reported - that would be a great help. Please report what radios you have on, I usually leave all of them on for testing purposes.
I'm very interested to see if any of these MHL adapters will charge while streaming, as well. I plan on this being my next accessory for the 3D but I don't want to get one that charges with half power.
Forgot to test out the other night. I'll try an get to it tonight before going to bed. Oh, I use Battery Monitor Widget Pro. Saw some one mentioning that app earlier, so you'll be able to relate fully. For radios, Wifi and Mobile Network are never turned off on my phone. That's how I'll be testing as I never have Bluetooth on when steaming movies, and only have GPS on when I'm using Navigation or an app that needs GPS. Obviously won't need GPS to stream a movie in my house...

got Monoprice MHL to charge last night while streaming
Took quite a bit of tinkering, but finally got positive charging (albeit not much) while streaming Battle of Midway from Netflix and the Wire from HBO GO last night. Using WTSB 1.9 rom and Monoprice MHL adapter.
What I had to do was:
-Airplane Mode;
-Turn on Wifi;
-Turn off account sync;
-Taskmanager to kill off everything but netflix;
-Use SetCPU to underclock to (648ishMHZ for netflix) or (900ishMHZ for HBO GO);
-Covedesign app to turn off button backlights;
-Covedesign app to go to backlight "blink" and disabled blink (like jumping rope) just at the right time for the backlight to stay off (may have to do this several times)(though this makes it damn hard to interact with phone unless you have bt mouse or keyboard - if not, may just want to turn brightness down as far as you can get);
My setup:
Evo3d streaming via wifi from iSpot 4G Clear device, outputting via MHL to optoma pk201 pico projector, with stock charger+usb, and audio via MHL/HDMI to pico projector.
Comment:
Netflix ROCKS (wonder why no stock landscape UI though)!!! Great streaming, no hiccups; HBO GO, on the other hand, (while AMAZING selection) constantly drops out to "Audio only stream, connect to stronger network or wifi for video", stutters, ... all kinds of crap and this is on a pretty regular 6mbps 4G Clear iSpot!

BTW, anyone know of an app that lets you monitor your total mA usage live?
like a graphing app or anything?
There used to be a great one for WM6 that showed, for example 400milliamps with screen on, and 200milliamps with screen off and graphed it over time.
I keep getting pissed off with these phones; can anyone help me (I've been searching for years and can't find answers) mind you, I'm coming from the x51v wm6.5.3; PalmTX; Sammy Omnia...
-Why can't we turn off the backlight to the screen?
-Why can't we MANUALLY rotate to landscape or portrait? (I know you can manually engage or disengage the AUTOmatic rotation feature)
-(maybe this does exist) Why can't we get readings on how many mA we are using?
It just seems like the x51v from 2002 was so much more advanced and customizable, seems like we are re-creating the wheel over and over again.
Sorry for the rant.
Battery Monitor Widget, as mentioned in the post previous to yours...

MHL Adapters are required to charge while being used, in fact, they only function if the charger is plugged in. That's part the spec, and I'd like to think I know quite a bit about MHL since I've done work and testing on the product for the company that created it, which is Silicon Image : http://www.siliconimage.com/products/family.aspx?id=10 . As for the quoted person, the adapter is not supposed to the the problem (unless you're getting a cheap knockoff one) but the power output of your charger can be an issue as well. The original Evo 3D charger outputs the proper power for the adapter to charge your phone properly. If you're using a cheap generic brand eBay MicroSD power cord, it will most likely not charge at the same output.
I've been using and testing these adapters before you ever knew about them. Is that enough information for you?
Went to a friends after work an just got home a little while ago. Battery is at 15% so instead of putting in a freshly charged battery, I'm going to test my T-Mobile MHL Adaptor for those interested. Hope to post results tonight, definitely going to test tonight though even if results aren't posted until the morning.

@LiquidSolstice What the heck's a "cheap generic brand eBay MicroSD power cord"? Did you mean microUSB? So much for your expertise... Dunno what you're going on about, but the MHL adapters could very well affect the current fed to the phone since it's literally going THRU them. Have you tested every single MHL adapter? Even if there's a spec they should conform to, it doesn't mean they all do, just like all chargers out there are not 1A chargers with properly shorted pins to deliver 1A.
The concerns you quoted and dismissed were valid, no need for that attitude. The USB cable used shouldn't really matter in the vast majority of cases, resistances introduced by even the thinnest retractable cables are pretty much negligible... I've actually tested that too. It really comes down to the charger, and possibly the MHL adapter that's in between. If mike hasn't posted his results with the T-Mo adapter tomorrow I'll test mine as I have the same one. Can't speak for the MP adapter as I don't have it, MP usually sells quality cables & adapters tho.

So much for my expertise? Tell you what. Remove the MHL adapter out of the question. Try to charge the phone using a Samsung Moment power cord. It's all MicroUSB as you say.
It won't properly charge. Just because a power cord has a plug on one end a MicroUSB on another doesn't mean they're all equal. The point that I'm responding to is that unless you're buying a knockoff MHL adapter (or a really, really cheap one) the spec specifies that they all charge from both USB and AC, and that there is enough power to properly charge the device.

Good MHL to HDMI cable?

With the news of XBMC coming to Android I feel I gotta invest in one of these cables hahaha. Anyone test any out yet? I see a bunch on amazon but I'd like to hear from someone who has the same phone.

The ones they sale at the TMobile store work good also.
Another +1 for the Monoprice link..
Ya just ordered it. Thanks!
get the media link from HTC. It's around $50-70 but it is wireless and has an hdmi port on it. Supports 1080p and it reflects the phone entirely on the tv.

YES.
According to the description on the monoprice site, the adapter has a micro-USB charging port on the side of the adapter.
I bought this one from Amazon since I have prime:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006V7F380/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
I have to have the regular usb power cable plugged into it for it to work with my TV and that charges my phone.
So it can also function as a 6ft power extender for charging if you don't use the HDMI part.
Happy with it for the price.
I have the HTC MHL adapter and I'm getting CRAZY lag when I play video games. I'm thinking it's sense, but I'm hoping it's the adapter.
Can any of the guys who bought an MHL cable try playing an nes/snes/genesis emulator while plugged in to the TV?
ya I'm getting a bunch of lag while playing HD video and audio cutting out with the Monoprice
update: seems that was a player issue? Was using MX player. Now I'm using Dice and and no lag.
monoprice....got that and a bright yellow hdmi cord for dirt cheap.
Anyone knows if those cables work on AOSP roms (cm10)?

Atrix Lapdock with Droid Razr Maxx

I ordered it a couple of days off of Amazon for $60. Flipped the ports and shaved down the plastic pieces to make it fit and it works like a charm for both my wife's stock ICS and my rooted custom ICS ROM (Eclipse 1.1). I know some folks like the old webtop interface better but the interface is so smooth now. And plus, it has one thing that other tablets don't have: touch typing without an additional peripheral which was important to me. It is also definitely better with a bluetooth mouse but the trackpad is passable.
If you have a lapdock, where did you find extension cables for the ports in case I didn't want to shove it into the back? The best I can find right now for a set of female to male micro HDMI and USB cables is almost $30 including shipping (that's half the cost of the dock).
Also, what are some of your favorite apps in webtop mode? Been digging QuickOffice and the stock Google apps.

I'm not there yet but I do use it more frequently than I thought I would. The keyboard takes a bit getting used to and the mouse is huge, too.
After a few days with it too all i can say is that i love it. My Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7272 gaming laptop is a monster of a thing to be handling so when i found out about the $20 deal i thought i would give it a shot. Its pretty sweet. Charges
he phone while using it (not that i have to worry about charge with Razr Maxx). Wireless mouse works perfectly and keyboard has no delay at all.
2 things i dont like: 1 The area to the right of where you plug your phone in gets really hot. Even after 10 minutes of use. I'm sure that will shorten the life of cables and conections in that area.
2.I cant get my maxx to sit well enough in the plug so it keeps disconnecting here and there. Seen as the maxx has to be standing up i didnt really expect it to work. So i'll keep am eye open for a good deal on small extension cables for it so it can be chilling on the table. Or i'll keep trying to think of a way to mount the phone on the dock.

Anybody interested in buying an Atrix lapdock that has been reconfigured for RAZR?
Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is allowed on the forum. I was selling my Atrix lapdock that I was using for RAZR MAXX on eBay, and got into a big mess with buyer and eBay (long story). Anyway, I don't trust eBay anymore so I'm looking to see if anybody is interested in buying it on XDA. If so, please PM me. I have a solid past eBay history and am willing to explain and arrange for a lower price than what was sold on eBay. Thanks in advance!

[BUYER BEWARE] Rocketfish MHL HDTV Adapter - Can anyone suggest a high quality one?

Now, I say BUYER BEWARE because I just bought this POS from Best Buy brand new in the box, and it works like complete crap. I don't want you to make the same mistake I did. I will be promptly returning this tomorrow.
The connection cable you plug into the phone's charger input from the Rocketfish is so shotty (and that's an understatement) it really only worked for 2 minutes after I held it with my thumb a certain way. (It's like holding a TV antenna the right way to get a picture to show up)
I'm giving this product 0 out of 5 stars. BUYER BEWARE! DON'T SUPPORT ROCKETFISH'S OVERPRICED GARBAGE!
---
Also, can anyone suggest a high quality one that will allow me to view everything that's on my phone on my HDTV? (Not one that only lets you play movies or look at pictures) - I mainly want to use this to play video games and surf the web.
Thanks in advance, zmag

Pretty sure you just got unlucky on that one, the MHL you are talking about is the exact one i used for my LTE...never had a single issue.. and if you didn't already know....thats not based on the cable... its based on if the rom you flashed supports that..
Thanks for the heads up I been looking for one I won't mess
with this
If you plan on moving the phone around at all... Arliberator,,, then don't buy this one.
Op. I can't remember the name but the red one on amazon works great.

I sell the Official HTC one for the EVo 3d etc. cost 29.99. at work atleast
bought mine off ebay for 5 bucks almost a yr ago. works fine.
I bought the one from T-Mobile for my Evo 3D, over a year ago. Think it cost me around $20 but worked perfect on my 3D, and worked the one time I tried it on my Evo LTE. I bought the Media Link HD though over half a year ago, and just use it now. The Media Link HD is awesome and has never have me a single issue!! Being wire free is awesome!! I highly recommend it!!

anyone tried the onn mhl adaptor from walmart? I've used a couple of their products (a mouse and usb cord). I can't really say to much about the mouse since to me a mouse is a mouse. But I've used alot of different usb cords (I've flashed alot of phones) and theirs was really good. I'm wondering if it has the same quality?
What about trying the Samsung Galaxy S4 MHL/HDTV Adapter since it does not require a power source?
A buddy of mine gave me his RocketFish MHL adapter a while back cause he didn't need it any more; I use it with my HTC EVO 4G LTE all the time. Doesn't seem to have any issues, as far as I've seen.
Though MHL/HDMI hasn't worked for me since I flashed CM10.1 "cm-10.1-20130304-EXPERIMENTAL-jewel-M2". Hopefully that'll be fixed soon, though.
No I got two from best buy within weeks n both messed up where the charger go so yes rocketfish is some bs

Note 3 charging cable survey

So I've had to replace my charging cable twice. Both only lasted a matter of days then completely stopped working. Never went back to sprint for a 3rd. I put no stress on the port connections and was especially careful with the second one. Luckily the S4 style works. Anyway, I'm curious if this is just bad luck on my part or if there's an issue with this design. If there are enough affirmatives I'll post this on all the other Note 3 forums and get some kinda petition together to get Samsung to provide a free solution. A Google search seemed to indicate there might be an issue. Thanks for your participation and please, if yours works fine don't post on here. It's completely unnecessary.

I'd like to know too. I haven't used my Note 3 charging cable. I just use the tons of micro USB cable I have laying around.
I feel like only asking people to post if the charging cable doesn't work will not provide good data for your survey. If your numbers were to show that out of let's say a group of 100 note 3 users that only 20 have a problem with their cable it is most likely just bad luck. But if it showed 80 of that group had some sort of failure you would have a leg to stand on when trying to get Samsung to conduct some mass replacement. Good luck in your venture. I have a feeling more people have had no problems or it would have been heard about already. My cable works fine by the way and I have had it since the day the phone was released on sprint.

Just wanted base not working numbers for now before I make anything out of it. I'm at a loss why 2 would stop working in a matter of weeks. Thought it was the phone at first but all the micro USB work fine. It's not an issue since my computer doesn't have v3 usb connections but it's the principality of it. I should have went back to sprint but it's just a hassle to go through.

Want to add that it may be related to newer version of phone. No clue. I got mine in jan and it came with MJ4. Don't know that there are any differences besides firmwares. Like I said, just testing the waters.

Mine died within 1 or 2 months, I decided to purchase one from Amazon basics I went for the 9 foot cable; thus far I have had zero problems except for having to shave off a bit on the edges in order to get the cable to fit through the opening on the case.
was going to post the amazon link but it won't let me until I make 10 posts or something
AmazonBasics USB Cable - 3.0 A Male to Micro B (9 Feet / 2.7 Meters)
I also got one f these for the car from amazon, works perfectly

That's cool but on a 500 dollar phone we shouldn't have to buy anything within first couple months.

I had the same problem. Went to sprint they gave me another but that one failed after awhile too. It wasn't putting out the right voltage it was only putting out like 300 when it's supposed to be 1200

I bought the external charger from a corporate sprint store. The cable that came with the phone soon started acting like the connections weren't secure with the charger. Even though it seemed solid on the phone, the charger, if moved slightly, the charger would post like the connection was interrupted. Lately, the power would cut out during a charge and the power light would turn off. This was after the charger was connected and not touched for hours. I finally used a regular microusb charger connected to either a lower output charger or a high output. Neither microusb charger acted like the original cable. I don't use the USB 3 cable to flash the phone because of its suspected flakiness. No issues so far. I, 80% of the time, use a microusb cable to charge the phone and or charger.
I had the exact same problem. I've been through 3 cables in 4 months. It's ridiculous in my opinion for such an expensive phone. It's my only complaint though. I have now got an external charger and so far so good. However it meant spending more just to charge my phone. Hopefully they make some changes on the next version.

My Note 3 I got just a week ago, was replaced just yesterday.. Why? The charging port was bad. Every time you plugged in the phone, it was real loose, and you could not get a decent charge, so BB replaced it.. Plus what I have noticed is my battery last longer.. When I first got the Note 3, I charged it up to 100 percent.. Half way through the day, it would need to be charged again. Most I got was about 8-9 hrs on battery.. Since I got my replacement (not refurbished) the plug does not move around, and so far on my current charge since taken it off at 7 am I have gone over 14 hrs and still at 60 percent.. If people are having a issue, Take your phone to a Samsung center if one is around you, they will fix it for free..
Bought me and my girlfriend Note 3 and had to take her's back because of the charging cord but they gave her a new phone also. Not to long after my charging cord started to act up. Paying all this money for a phone there is no way so many people should be having issues with the charging

Mine works fine on the phone, no flakiness, but very bad on the external charger.
The charger connection has a little play in the cord and it seems like it only charge when the phone is off. And when it finally do charge the battery discharge very fast. What you guys think I should do
We bought Notes for my wife an I around October. She had a cable go bad on her but I switched to a USB 2 cable and haven't had any other issues....
So 1/2 cables in our house are good.
My cable stopped working after a month too for no reason, thought it was the phone at first until I tried another cable, my friends dad had an extra note 3 cable and thats been working fine since around January
