Can't play YouTube videos on mobile data - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For a while now I haven't been able to play any YouTube videos whilst on mobile data (3g etc)
This happened with my Desire Hd and now with my Samsung Galaxy s3 (I'm running Mike's ARHD Rom)
Any ideas? I can't find any settings anywhere, I just get "connetion to server lost"

are you using firewall like droidwall?

Nope nothing like that. Can do everything else but not watch YouTube

What kind of service do you have?
Can you browse the web while on network??

Vodafone 1GB a month data and I can do everything except watch videos on the YouTube app on mobile data (via the website seems to be fine)

So you're flashed to Vodafone service? Try this:
1. ##3282#
2. Choose Edit.
3. Enter MSL
4. Choose "Others"
5. Choose "Multimedia"
6. Change both RTSP and HTTPPD proxies to "0.0.0.0"
7. Change both RTSP and HTTPPD ports to "0"
8. Back out to home screen and restart phone
9. Try it now
I'm not sure if this works on the GT-I9300 version. I am using Sprint's L710 version. I am flashed to a different carrier and this is how I got my streaming to work. I think it should be the same. If not, I'd look around to see how to access the DATA programmIng menu and start there.

What do you mean by flashed to Vodafone? My network provida is Vodafone and that's who I'm using
Also gte ##3382# doesn't work, says unknown command

So your device says Vodafone on it or is it flashed/unlocked for use on Vodafone's network? It's ##3282# not ##3382#. If that doesn't work then it's different on the i9300 variant.

The device was bought direct from Vodafone, but has no Vodafone branding on it at all.
A little bit more digging and it may be down to my Voadafone APN, but I can't edit it as its greyed out in the settings for some reason. Adding a new one with the same settings doesn't seem to work

I've been trying to do some research to help. Here are a few different things I have found out that you might want to try:
1. Are you able to access your APN settings? If you are able to access your APN settings, make sure you are using the one that says "live.vodafone.com" if it exists. Also, if it gives you an edit option, make sure the username and password are blank.
2. There might be a so-called "universal age restriction" on your account. If so, according to Vodafone, age restrictions are available as a setting that blocks any kind of streaming (probably for porn reasons lol) Maybe access your account online or give the company a call to see if you can remove this.
3. Also read somewhere that Vodafone has a service you have to pay for called "Vodafone Live!" so they are blocking regular streaming access to encourage users to sign up for this service.

Have you try uninstall it and reinstall from play store?

Already done that at the start
It's not a phone issue, as it does the same on my Desire HD. I think it's an issue with either the network or YouTube and the routing or something for the videos. The YouTube app is working, as related videos show in the list and comments work, just none of the videos play
Very frustrating!

Check if your internet apn includes any proxy server.
If yes, write it down, remove it and reboot your phone, then try again

What do you mean? I have the same model of phone as you and Google talk works fine over 3G/4G/LTE no problem..
Could this be something that AT&T is doing? I am on Rogers in Canada...
He means video chat over WiFi requirement. If you're rooted you just need to edit a file with sqeditor.

Doh, My bad.
I will look around for sqeditor too.. video chat would be something I would also likely want to enable..
thanks for the info!
edit: instead of the Gui SQLite Editor, I chose to isntall sqlite3 since it was missing for some reason.. (guessing that not all builds get it).. anyhow there is an app in the ap store called 'sqlite isntaller for root'.. once installed I just did the following through terminal emulator.. I guess I could have done it through adb as well...
Code:
$ su
# sqlite3 /data/data/com.google.android.*gsf/databases/gservices.db "insert into overrides (name, value) values ('gtalk_vc_wifi_only', 'false')";
# reboot
Great info here.. very glad I remembered about this site and came back now that I have an Android device I actually use..

Play store apps not downloading or updating

I cannot download or update any apps for the last few days. It just gets stuck at 'downloading' without ever downloading anything.
I have tried the usual clearing play store data, signing out of talk and even factory reset but still not working.
Is there anything else I can try?

YouTube connection problem on Vodafone UK

Hi all,
Have the above problem and can't find the answer to it. I have tried loads of different roms and none of them allow me to access YouTube via the official app. I can view videos via the website and using rolles YouTube app but not the official app. I have just updated my mum's s3 to jellybean using the official update non rooted and YouTube works fine.
Is It something to do with being rooted, running a custom Rom or something completely different?
How can I solve this, any help would be great.
Cheers in advance,
Blinky

Looks that way, YouTube worked fine for me on stock and still does on miui. Can only really suggest using browser or 3rd party app such as tubemate (Google it)
Edit: re-read op, can see you're doing that already. What exactly happens when you try using the app? FC? Any errors messages?

Just states that the connection has been lost, press to they again.
Some of the adverts before the videos will play but not the chosen video.
Just can't understand why, haven't changed anything and even tried with fresh installs and nothing else installed.

You're not alone. I've been suffering with this for months now. I'm not on an S3 but on a Galaxy Nexus.
I'm currently running AOKP JellyBean M1 having the same issue. Can't remember if I had the problem on stock because that was back in January.
Google say they can't help and Vodafone say it must be the phone as there are no issues. I believe it has something to do with being a root user.
Very annoying as at work and home I get full HSDPA with unlimited data and I can't even make full use of it.
Over WiFi is fine, just on mobile internet I get the problem so clearly a conflict with Vodafone UK.
If anyone still having issues on this matter its because your fast dormancy rule is wrong when you are on custom roms.
edit the build.prop so that the value is =2 and reboot your phone.
ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=2
=1 means enabled
=0 means disabled
=2 means vodafone setting

I had the same problem. Popped into a Vodafone store, got a new SIM (mine was getting a bit old), and now it works. Worth a shot.

i am running viper rom now tried a couple other roms with no luck either so it must be something i did ...
AT&T hotspots telling me to open the browser and accept the terms and conditions to access free wifi ..
any ideas on how to get it to auto connect as it once did?
I think that was att bloatware app. If not the same, a similar app, AT&T smart WiFi, is on play store, seems like it has issues with battery drain though.

Must have attwifi ssid in the list of saved WiFi networks, after that it will auto connect and login every time. Will show a notification when it connects.

I know reflash the ROM will probably fix it and that's what I am planning to do but it can't be done until I get back home...
Just all of the sudden, play store become unable to connect the server via Wi-Fi but all good in 3G...
I do have a firewall but it ONLY activated in the 3G condition in order to control my traffic
I have tried several different Wi-Fi, none of them work out...
