No 4G on non-stock roms - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a GT- i9100 with a 4G plan (HSPA+). The problem is that I cannot get it to work on any non-stock rom. I have tried at least six stock roms and it has worked on each one. But whether aosp/aokp/miui, I can not use my data connection for internet. I have manually entered and double checked apn settings many times. I have enabled hsdpa etc under Galaxy/ Advanced settings and restarted many times. I have tried numerous modems to no avail. My phone is rooted but not unlocked. I am not sure if that is relevant. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Tried to enter four times. Every time got the following message
"Connection problem or invalid MMI code."

HSPA+ isn't 4G.

This is not a HSPA+ vs LTE debate. I am just trying to get my data connection working on non samsung roms.

Tried different bands to no avail. most just reverted to default of WCDMA preferred

I'm also interested on activating H+ on non-stock roms. I really hope you'll find a solution.

You are technically correct but in some countries, H+ is referred to as 4G.
In my country, H+ is referred to as 3.75G

HSPA+ does work on non-stock roms, but the icon showed only H, and not H+.... There has been a recent patch submitted, approved and merged in aosp roms.... Update to latest nightly if you are on aosp.... To confirm, go to settings, about phone, and then status...

Hi all,
First time poster, long time follower!!
I'm hoping someone can help me here because i have a real headache with my galaxy s2.
When i got it at Christmas everything was perfect. But two weeks later i suddenly lost my 3g. Phone works fine on 2g (except for the slow speed), but i contacted my carrier 3Ireland and they said everything is fine on their end. My APN is perfect, i've tried toggling airplane mode, entering codes, data package checks. You name it and i've tried it.
When i force my phone to select 3g it looses all signal and i have to restart my phone and quickly go back into settings to choose 2g or i will loose signal again.
This is the following on my phone.
Android version 2.3.5
Baseband version I9100XXKI4
Kernel Version [email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XWKI8
I've being reading about modem/radios lately, is that just the baseband? Could that be my problem. I'm a noob at this kinda thing.I just want my 3g to come back.
All help is greatly appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you all.
Thanks.

It would be interesting to know your SGS2 is white version as well as mine.
I have to say that I have another SGS2 but old black version which is perfectly functional on the same 3 network. After playing a very long times with both phones settings, I have a feeling that the core of the problem lies in the "APN type" setting. Changing it's content affects how it connects to network. I have no deep understanding of what is happening behind the scene while changing this option, but there is a possibility that the portion of file system responsible for it somehow been damaged.
It would be great if the developers could tell us if this part of the Android file system is changed while flashing different firmware/radio, or it is persistent?

Dial *#*#4636#*#*, go to phone information and see the settings for the radio. It should be at the bottom. Google the settings for the GSM, WCDMA. Mine is currently 'GSM auto PRL'. 'WCDMA Preferred'is also a better option for 3G network.

Thank you. I fiddled with GSM, WCDMA settings as you said, but no luck.
What is even more interesting is if the network mode is set to "WCDMA only", then I'm not even able to register on 3 network. After an attempt to manually connect to 3 via "Network Operators" menu, it says "Unable to connect. Try later".
Also after connecting via WCDMA, and then reverting back to GSM, the GSM dies as well. The only solution is to restart the phone.
If it is a software bug, then I do not understand why this problem did not go away after flashing different Rom with radio.

guys....carriers can't sell a device that is advertised as a 3g capable phone. Call them and spit "misleading advertising" mixing "give me a phone that I can actually use" words. You could also add "Release me from my contract, I'm moving to other 3g WORKING carrier".

T-Mobile USA?
If yes, you're probably in a market that they have not yet re-farmed the 1900mhz frequency for HSPA+ yet. The i9100 doesn't get 1700mhz, and the majority of T-Mobile USA's network uses the AWS band, which requires both 1700 and 2100mhz to work for 3g/"4g".

Mobile Network State : Disconnected. Cannot make calls.

Greetings
Today I upgraded my ATT Galaxy S2 to the ICS rom that appeared recently with Odin3 1.85.
Everything went pretty smoothly until I realized whenever I tried to make a call nothing would happen, the confusing thing is my internet kept working on Edge (since I'm T-mo on an unlocked phone). I tried to check via de *#simlock# command if it was unlocked and indeed it seems to be.
Furthermore I tried to send a text message to myself and it seems to have gone through added to the fact that the internet is there, the only problem is the calls.
I checked the IMEI and it seems to be fine, I did a factory reset and nothing happened.
During my exploration of the phone I found that it said, as the title implies, Mobile Network State: Disconnected which freaked me out.
I also tried resetting the mobile networks to default but nothing is working I'm kind of desperate (I usually avoid posting as opposed as researching) and have been searching online for near 2 hours I would appreciate any help.
Thanks
SO many things wrong.

ATT Galaxy S2 is the SGH-I777. You are in the GT-I9100 forums. If you really do have an I777, and flashed an I9100 firmware to your I777, then this is likely the source of your problems. The I777 and I9100 have SIMILAR hardware to where a flash wouldn't kill your phone, but things wouldn't work right. Sounds like what you are describing.

You say you have an ATT Galaxy S2, but here you say you're on T-Mobile. Are you in the US? If you're on the US, how did you get an ATT Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile? ATT phones are usually SIM locked. Also, T-Mobile has their own Galaxy S2 model, which is the SGH-T989. Totally different hardware. If you DO have an ATT model, and are on T-Mobile, then you are probably getting abysmal mobile data speeds. The ATT model will only get Edge speeds on T-Mobile's network, and vice versa, the T-Mobile model will only get Edge speeds on ATT's network.
EDIT: Oh, I re-read that. I see you recognize you will only get Edge on T-Mobile's network when using this device. But that doesn't answer my question. If you have an ATT model (SGH-I777) did you SIM-unlock it?

Again, if you actually have an ATT model (SGH-I777) and you flashed an I9100 firmware, you probably got modem files not meant for your phone.

Bottom line, check your phone model. Don't trust the boot screen or the About Phone details, as a firmware flash will change those. Look on the label under your battery. I'm guessing you have an SGH-I777, and you flashed a GT-I9100 firmware.
ATT's Galaxy S2 (SGH-I777) has its own forum.
T-Mobile's (SGH-T989) has its own forum too.
EDIT: Please let this be a lesson. Always be sure you are flashing a firmware meant for your specific model of phone.

[Q] Mobile Network state Disconnected SGH-I727r

Hey folks, I just recently run into an decent error, there are many people here with this error, but not like mine. I have the Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE SGH-I727r. I'm on Rogers Network. Problem is that I cannot use my data which is internet. I have 2GB of it. I can receive calls and text. I can also call back and text back. but the only thing doesn't work is my internet.
I'm running Custom rom I suppose its Sky ICS 4.2D-10.
My apn is checked "rogers"
and my mobile data is one.
Does anyone know a stable Custom rom for Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE SGH-I727r?

Probably somewhere in the I727 forums. Definitely not any here in the I9100 forums.
EDIT to add: though you're looking for ROMs in the wrong forum, it sounds like your APN settings may have gotten corrupted. Check your APNs. Google what they are for Rogers. See if they match up.

[Q] 1900 mhz modem

Afternoon people. I have searched a lot for an answer to this and cant find a solution so any assistance is greatly appreciated.
I Have a sgs2 (i9100) and run the paranoid android rom, latest version. I now live in the usa and have a t mobile sim card, the information I have found says they now operate on the 1900 mhz frequency. My phone however wont connect to anything other than edge, how can I check which frequencies it is operating on? The modem is XXLQ6, does that have 1900mhz? Is there a different modem I can flash onto it?
Thanks for any suggestions!!

No.
dont bother about flashing another modem. Your phone will always be stucked on EDGE on Tmobile. AT&T 3G frequency is compatible with GT I9100
Alright, thanks mate. Incidentally I got to Vegas today and the reception shows a "H", guess they have upgraded the towers here. Still slow as buggery mind you.
Will look into an AT and T SIM card.

[Q] Straight Talk LTE on custom ROMs

Hello there,
I have a new sim card from Straight Talk, that supports LTE/4g and i'm running Jellybean Sandwich v2.0 on my Note. With this new sim and updated APN settings I'm still getting only typical HSPA+ data connection, no luck on getting LTE to work yet.
Under Phone info (*#*#4636#*#*) menu settings I cannot switch a preferred network type, it goes back to "WCDMA preferred" all the time. Already have tried another modem (UCMD3) with no success whatsoever, it won't let me select anything else. I'm getting the same HSPA+ connection.
Any advice on how to get LTE to work, please?
I purchased my sim card a little over a month ago, and I just started seeing LTE yesterday. I'm running the most recently 10.2 nightly. I am using an AT&T GS3, not a note, however. I never purchased a new sim card. I think I may have just gotten lucky, as my wife's phone (AT&T htc one x) doesn't get LTE on straight talk, and we got our sim cards in the same envelope.
Check the APN settings.

Also make sure you are on an ATT radio. Go into dialer and press *#2263# and set to automatic if not done already.

Looks like my APN setting are fine, thank you. I guess i need to reflash a stock ROM in order to get *#2263# to work (this combination doesn't work on custom ROMs unfortunately).

I've seen the same issue on CM 10.1 nightlies and now the 4.3 AOKP rom that I'm running. Under the Mobile network settings go to network operators. It normally takes a minute or two before it displays the carriers (ATT/T-Mobile). Once you select AT&T (if they are listed twice it doesn't seem to matter which you select), then try to go back and change the network mode to gsm/wcdma/lte.
Even though my sim card uses the new APN settings, I still had to contact Straight Talk's BYOB number and ask them to re-provision my sim card for LTE support.
I confirmed today that I'm getting LTE. The speed test I ran 13.61Mbps down and 4.25 Mbps up.

That's all it will ever be. Why? Because note 1 modems are locked (RAT Restricted).
And H+ is 4G/LTE. Some roms might not have an LTE icon. To know for sure check phone settings and see that the network type is 14 (4G/LTE).
