Help!!!! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so my friend has a samsung vibrant is wanted to get his phone rooted and went to me. So I rooted it and installed ICS passion 13.1 ROM and it worked fine. Then he wanted jelly bean, so i looked into jelly bean and decided that i wanted to use Slim Bean to install it and it did not work. I download all the necessary files and then put them on the phone. I flashed the first file(t959) then the common file but after i installed the device file(t959) the phone stayed at samsung vibrant for too long. Then i pulled the battery went to CWM and installed the common file and after that i tried to reboot and try out Jelly Bean. It just stayed at the samsung logo. So then i started freaking out but forgot that i still had a backup. I restored the backup that i made earlier(real life saver this time) but there are more problems than i expected. Now the home and search button on his phone doesnt work and he needs jellly bean. What do i need to do to fix the home and search button? Should i reinstall passion ics 13.1 or restore the backup of eclair? If i can fix that how will i go to jelly bean?

Go back to eclair, install a froyo ROM, I used bionix v. Probably doesn't matter. Flash cm9 nightly (latest). Then flash up to Helly Bean (my rom of choice)
Obviously wipe/factory reset/wipe cache/dalvik before each flash step.
Enjoy your buttery jelly beans!

Okay so I need to restore the eclair backup? Why can't I go from jelly bean from passion.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

You might be able to. I don't remember the circumstances, but if I recall correctly, some people have reported having issues going from Passion to JB.
I could be mistaken.

Should I just install cm9 to get to jelly bean then?

Yeah, wipe data, wipe cache, dalvik. Then flash and reboot recovery and flash common. After that I booted up to make sure everything was going as planned. Then I rebooted to recovery wiped again and flashed Helly Bean.

So install cm9 then use your instructions to install slim bean?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

Yes. Fire away. If you have any questions feel free to ask. We're here all the time

I would recommend to Odin to eclair, then flash the latest CM10 nightly (you can find the thread in the Dev section). Reboot, then flash again with GApps.

To get the best clean install its best to Odin back to stock however you cannot go from stock straight to cm10.
If you ask what is the best way to get to jb, 3 people will probably give three different answers. I'm not sure what you're running now but its good to upgrade incrementally. Stock>cm7>cm9>jellybean(cm10). After you flash all zips for any ROM, if it gets stuck on boot screen, give it a few minutes sometimes it will take awhile at first. If it doesn't boot pull battery and use 3 button combo back to recovery and reboot. If it still doesn't go pull battery 3 button to recovery and flash everything again no wipe. That usually fixes it.

Help! Tried to root after offical ics, now hanging at samsung loading screen.

My phone wont boot now.
It stays stuck at the 2nd Samsung during the boot up.
What happen was I updated today to offical ICS from my rooted gingerbread.
I updated via kias today to get official ICS, got it working and I noticed I didn't have cwm install anymore, so I followed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218
It is pass it did it reboot thing, and never got past the 2nd "samsung" loading screen.
Anyone know how to get my phone booting again?
Flash the latest ICS kernel
I am not sure how to do that without cwm.
Before I updated to ICS when I press power + up down, it booted into CWM. Now when I do that I boots into Android System Recovery <3e>
EDIT: Good news.
Got CWM through installed though odin and then I restored to my gingerbread backup I made earlier.
Flash your roms via clockwork recovery mod from now on.
Drop the ROM .zip on sd card and then enter recovery. Wipe everything three times each then flash a uclf6 based ROM. Never touch Odin or kies again. Be happy. Ice cream sandwich is way better than ginger bread

Had the same exact problem. I "believe" the problem was that the CWM I flashed was perhaps incompatible with the official ICS?
I used Odin to flash cwm 5.5.0.4 as suggested and the fone was shut down with the hanging Samsung screen as you mentioned. I used the DL screen with Odin to the 600mb Team Objection ROM, which at least got me up and running again. I found out that CWM did in fact flash once the ROM was compatible with it. Updated CWM, then to finally get full stability, I had to do a factory reset after clearing both caches, then install the CM9 official.

Update: I installed official ICS again last night, looks like I lost my root and CWM.
I don't want to mess anything up again, so could you tell me exactly what CWM file you used to flash so it doesn't hang at samsung again?
I was having the same problems but I think I was doing it wrong. How are you flashing the root files? I upgraded from Kies, then used Odin to flash cwm touch (5.5.0.4 I think), make sure to let the reboot and that it's actually turned on and you can see your homescreen. Once you do that, THEN flash the superuser 3.0.7 in cwm. Let the phone reboot properly and it should be okay.
I was doing the same without the reboots and that's what caused me to hang at the logo, but after the above it worked well. Give it a try. For anyone who needs to flash the T-Mobile radios also let the phone reboot and then flash it because I was having issues with that which was fixed by letting the phone reboot.
Make nandroids at every step in case it does hang so you can just restore and try again instead of flashing everything all over again.

I've also tried rooting my AT&T Galaxy Note I717 which had recently upgraded to ICS via AT&T/Kies and my phone is stuck at the Samsung boot screen. While I'm no expert with rooting phones, I had no problem rooting it when it had GB installed so I figured I wouldn't have any problems rooting it again. Is flashing the ICS kernel the best way to fix this? Where do I get the ICS kernel from and how do I flash it?
Details: After my phone upgraded to ICS 4.0.4 kernel 3.0.8 (IMM76D.UCLF6), I followed some instructions to root it using Odin3-v1.85 and PDA->pda.tar. Other instructions used cwm-touch-i717-120414.tar.md5 and odin_n1717_cwm_recovery_b4.tar and I tried those but to no avail. So I have CWM v5.5.0.4 installed but I don't know what to do next.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Update: I restored my phone back to a non-rooted working Android 4.0.4 by downloading the stock ROM for my phone (I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_I717UCLF6_HOME.tar.md5) and uploading it using Odin3-v1.85/PDA. I didn't even lose any of my settings or data. Now I need to figure out how to successfully root it. But at least I'm not worried about getting stuck on the Samsung screen anymore.
Open odin , PDA cwm file, Droid in dl mode, plug in start unplug, reboot, go to cwm recovery mode and backup onto sd card.

You realize the reason you were stuck was because you flashed a GB kernel onto an ICS system? It would never boot. As the second post suggested... all you had to do was flash an ICS kernel to get it to boot.

so correct...you nailed it...so many are trying to root with gb kernal....
I hope they go to the page I made and follow the green arrowed how to root ics...it is very super simple process to root the official ics...but ....
This happened to me after misreading a comment.
If you put your phone into download mode, plug it in, run kies, and do an emergency firmware recovery. You'll need the serial number. My phone is stock ICS again. Works fine.

so cwm 5.5.0.4 touch is a GB kernel? Because that's all I flashed after the KIES update to ICS and I got the hanging Samsung logo.
I believe some people are trying to get ICS rooted with this cwm and are getting stuck. Of course there are ways out of it, but it'll help the learning process if we can find the problem.

Touch screen glitch?

Hello
first off let me say thanks in advance to anyone who can help me shed some light on this matter.
im trying to follow forum rules (i have used them before) and used the search function. so if i missed it im sorry. but here is as much info as i can give.
so i have a Tmobile samsung galaxy s vibrant. great phone love it. it had eclair on it. i used samsung kies to update it to froyo 2.2. that was the most i knew you could update a phone. until i found out you can do more. so i instantly wanted to flash to a the best ROM i could find info and was directed to the jelly bean Rom. i initially wanted to try the helly bean ROM (not sure if there is a difference) but im new to this and went with the rom i could find the most info on. found this guy on youtube. since i can post out side links yet. he calls him self "DJ eddie one" who was also recommended by the team passion forum. again im new to this so bare with me. so i tried to go through the process. I'm sure you all know that you cant just go from froyo to another rom. so i had to go back to stock. i re flashed the phone back to eclair via Odin by the same guy in his "return vibrant back to stock" video no problem. back everything up and made it back to stock. touch screen has response and i can unlock the phone and use it like normal. here is the deal now. after i went through the whole process of flashing it and going from ICS to slim bean and then to jelly bean. the home screen comes up and says "swipe here" or "touch here" or "start" or what ever. the screen does not respond. the volume buttons raise the volume and the power button turns the screen off and if i hold the power power button i get the "airplane mode"/"power off" options but cannot select anything. i thought i had done something wrong so i did the process over again. 3 times. even stopped at each rom change just to check it out as i processed through the process. no change. flash back to Eclair stock. and it works fine.
please help. i hate elcair. im sick of it. i want my free mobile hot spot back so i can listen to NPR news ap on my ipod touch in my car cuz i dont have a radio. and froyo blows too. if you're wondering why i can afford a snazzy phone and ipod touch but not a car stereo its because i drive an RX7. Cheers please help! i sure hope its something stupid (almost always is with me) i tend to over think things. plus i work on PCs and MACs for a living. i setup freaking networks for Allah sake. its frustrating to get stuck on a some phone software. AAAAHHHHHAAA.. *end rant*
thanks again.
hysterically yours

Well if your running hellybean. It sounds like it might just be a bad flash. Don't Odin back to stock.
1.go into recovery and format system.
2. Wipe cache.
3. Go into advanced settings and wipe dalvik cache.
4 go into mounts and storage and format /boot and format /system.
Reflaah the hellybean allinone(it depends which hellybean build were you flashing)
5.flash the hellybean add on and reeboot

Go to the Helly Bean thread in the developers forum. Go to page one and it should have a link to the addon package.
I had a glitch like yours one time where the touch screen acted like it was unplugged (for lack of better way to describe it). I popped battery out and rebooted and it was fine.
If not, Odin back to stock and follow my guide I posted in the Status 7 error thread. Page 3 I think.

Try flashing CM10 instead of Helly Bean. Helly_Bean's installation can be somewhat tedious, but CM10 is just one zip file. Here is a link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775271

and how would i do that? i mean what would cause the screen not to work? i was fine when eclair was on it and fine when foryo was on it. i go through the process of flashing it to ICS Passion then to Slim Bean and then to Jelly Bean and the screen just stops? i even stopped at eat Flash cuz i wanted to see what they looked like before made it to jelly bean. and each one the screen did work. i was thinking some sort of kernel file handles that or driver? correct me if im wrong.

In that thread stated are the files i need to flash the phone. in there is this link (http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/Helly_Bean/) which i have been to before. i guess i got confused as to what files i needed from the link because there are a few directories in there with lots of other files and i wasnt sure which i needed. Example; in that link if i click on kernel link it takes me to the next directory with numbers. ( i assume these are versions) then if i click on 113 it takes me to another dir of files. i can only assume i want the one that is lableled "Devil3_1.1.3_HB_vibrant_CFS_BLN_VC_20120807.zip"
im just confused as to what files i do need and what i dont need. im sorry to be such a pest.

whats the difference of the inverted as apposed to the regular? if i try one can i go back to try the other?
in reference to your second link;
i can flash back to sock with odin no problem.
the rest of the items needed on the list though
Gingerbread bootloader installed
-Bionix V fishman ROM (2.2 with Bali kernel, any 2.2 ROM may do.. YMMV)
-latest CM9 nightly (ICS)
-latest Helly Bean All In One and Add-on package.
i can get this from the same link?
The rest of the items you'll need to search for. GB boot loaders has a whole sticky devoted to it, how to do it, etc.
You can find the bionix ROM and CM9 nighty (ICS) in the android development forum (hit your back button once and you should see the development forum)
You'll be fine, just download everything you need, follow instructions, and you'll be set.
I've never used inverted apps, I assume it changes the look of them.

The inverted gapps change white to black and black to white, for example in gmail the screen will be black and red with white writing.
There are two benefits from this
1. They look cool IMO.
2. It uses less battery, white screens draw more current.

[Q] WiFi not working on JB ROMS

Just got a GSIII today and have been trying some JB ROMS out, but so far I have not been able to get WiFi working at all with any of them.
I have tried Vanilla RootBox, LiquidJB and SuperNexus but whilst I can see my WiFi AP on all of them and can enter my password all I get is the "Connecting..." message for ages before it gives up?
WiFi works fine on the stock ROM, and there are no obvious settings on the WiFi router itself which would be causing this.
Any advice appreciated!

Thanks, I just spotted a couple of threads mentioning this.
Couple of questions, when you say flash back to stock does that mean through CWM Recovery, or some other way? Does it have to be a straight flash to a downloaded stock ROM or am I able to just "restore" the backup I made?

Please note, when you have flashed back to ics you need to then set up phone and connect to Wi-Fi once, then proceed to flash jb

Or try http://fus.nanzen.se/
This is if you want to find the original firmware your phone came with.
I'm still not having much luck with this.
Should I be wiping before I flash back to ICS, and then again before back to JB?
I think a wipe before flashing ICS is enough.
But watch the youtube video on the first post on :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
It pretty much explains every part of returning to stock ICS. From there it is just reflashing JB with odin and wifi should work.
Hmm, still not having much luck. I've installed my JB ROM, wiped, gone back to stock ICS using the ROM from the link provided above in ODNI.
But now when I try to reboot in to recovery to re-flash my JB ROM I seem to get a different version of recovery from what I had before and it fails during verification when I try to flash the .zip.
Any advice welcome!
I'm having the same problem here.
BUT, even flasing stock ICS and flasing a custom JB ROM after that does not solve the issue.
Here is what I did in what order. Maybe I'm missing some essential point or whatever:
- full wipe in cwm recovery
- flash stock ICS via Odin (I9300XXBLH3_I9300DBTBLH4_I9300XXLH1_HOME.tar)
- reboot and test WiFi. WiFi works fine! Firmware is 4.0.4
- flash CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 to gain root again
- boot into CWM Recovery, format /preload (to get rid of apps installing themselves on boot)
- another full wipe
- install zip from sdcard (tried AOKP JB build 4 for i9300 and ParanoidAndroid v2.22)
same old ****! WiFi not conecting!
I would apeciatie any help to solve this problem for me. Aparently reverting to stock ICS has solved this for others but I dont get what I'm donig wrong her...
try some router side adjustments

you need to root again flashing 'CF-Root' via Odin to get CWM recovery. I guess.

that does not seem right. My phone connects just fine with any ICS based ROM. It even conects with JB ROM Android Revolution HD.

Okay so I Re-rooted with CF-Root through ODIN and have got CWM recover back, but now when I re-flash JB I still get the same problems, try to connect to WiFi and it just sits there saying "Connecting..." and then gives up!
Is there a specific set of steps for doing this? I connected to WiFi whilst back on the Stock ICS ROM (LG8) and that worked fine, I have tried various combinations of wiping/not wiping at each stage in between JB->ICS->JB with no luck. Do I need a particular Stock ROM to go back to, do I have to use a specific version of ODIN/CF-Root/CWM?
Very annoying as everything else about the Jelly Bean ROMS seems perfect!
Has anyone worked out why JB ROMS are doing this?
I have the same problem
It seems to work for some people to go back to ICS and then flash JB ROMs, but somehow it does not work for us..
I'm trying an old stock ICS now and the will flash cm10. lets see if that helps
I've downloaded a selection of stock and custom ICS roms to try with the process, hopefully something will do the trick!
Also I don't think changing router settings can have anything to do with this as it works fine for every other device I own, including a different handset running JB. However out of curiosity I spent last night playing with all the settings to see if anything would help. It didn't
U said u flashed back to stock.... In that case u lost cwm then ur gonna hafto re flash cwm

razr maxx cdma brick after jb ota

Hey everyone
I downloaded and installed the jellybean ota successfully to my CDMA razr maxx xt912 the day the leak came out. Everything was running smooth and safestrap was installed. Then I tried to install a theme and everything went bad! The phone can only boot to fastboot because the jb ota leak didn't have a stock recovery.
Since the jelly bean fast boot files aren't out I just bought a used gnex from my friend and have been loving it but I want to get my razr up and running..
I have tried rsdlite and the utility tools to try and bring it back to ICS and nothing works so far.. Any ideas?

You can NOT ever get back to ICS. Can you clarify if you were on the Christmas leak or soak/ota before this happened?

i posted this on another thread but same thing.
Easy Fix,
Matt's Utility 1.90
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/to...ux-all-in-one/
1. Unzip, move the folder that said MOVE TO SD
2. Go into AP Fastboot
3. Do # 1
4. Power Off/On then go into Recovery
5. Wipe everything
6. Install update from External SD
7. Choose the ICS > JB Leak
8. Go take a short 20 mins nap
9. Reboot and go into the whole setup process
10. Use 1.90 Utility to Root your Phone
11. Install RootKeeper
12. Choose #4 and follow instruction on how to install from Leak > JB
13.
The leak I downloaded was the night before Christmas I'm pretty sure.. Thanks for responding I'll see if the utility works!

I can't boot into recovery to wipe the phone or install anything because there is no stock recovery on the jb ota I have.. All the phone does is boot to fastboot so that method won't work for me. I'm pretty sure I'm guna have to wait for the fastboot files unless I can get a recovery on the phone through fastboot

The stock recovery shouldn't be over written. Access it the same way you do for fast boot

[Q] Unable to install ROM past EL01...CM10.1, CM10, AOKP all bypass setup...

And the all have the same green leaf for a home screen, so are my ROMS not being written to the right place or what. this is getting confusing. the ROM form about shows the different versions but all are skipping the setup and I have no 3G/LTE connection, only wifi.
Whatever I am doing I seem to be consistent about it
Did you flash gapps?

the AOPK had gapps folded in. what is odd is I have now tried AOPK and a CM10 and CM10.1 and they all seem to have the same start screen, come up after the boot like it is already installed, missing any 3G/4G connection. Now I have flashed back to EG01 and run up though iCS several times and it isn't taking the CWM now, says it installs ok but boots into stock recovery. Now I using the older CWM 5504 for the i-905 and it writes somewhere, but apparently not where it should be. I was going to try TWRP but that doens't appear to run on HC/ICS - is it JB only? I have shied away from the newer CWM for a long time because for a while they just seemed to boot-loop the tablet.
Any one have a suggested working version of CWM? This starting from scratch and rolling in all the updates is getting old - which is why I was wondering if there is a way to build my own ODIN set to just flash back to this point without having to go though reroot and install of the recovery (which apparently now I am not able to do - wts! )
Thanks!
Rob (lost) in Katy.
Twrp is compatible with ICS too, if im not mistaken. Go to www.droidbasement.com and download pershoots's version of cwm recovery. That should work just fine. BTW, you did make a full wipe (system, data, cache, dalvik) right? And what's EG01?

I am now one cycle 15 and doing the last update to 4.04. every stinking rom I load goes back to the factory or the ROM starts off and ignores the setup. The really annoying thing is I have had all this setup and working before. Ahhhhhh!

Ok, i found another recovery laying around that seems to be working. I also found that the bug where you need to delete the script that deletes the new recovery. Once I got that far things started making sense. I guess whatever mod I was on before didn't need it. The next trick will be trynig to decifer how to do an odin backup so that I don't haver to roll though 4/5 upgrades to get here. I know someone is doing it. thanks for the help and a place to bounce ideas. will update if i come up with anything.
