You can but that would defeat the whole purpose of upgrading. All you would get is the radios and hboot and recovery.
Possible, but doesn't really make sense.

If you're s-off, the latest radio/firmware is posted in the firmware thread in the dev section, just follow the directions there..

If he's just gonna turn around and put a rom on his phone, no real need to flash /system if it's just gonna be wiped.

Just flash the whole thing then restore a backup. not difficult.

True, but there's less of a chance of something going wrong/bricking if you don't mess with the RUU. Flashing independent hboots can also cause problems if you get a bad download (very rare but possible)
This is what I have in the development section
Exactly for this purpose

Hold the power button down for 10 seconds and the phone should power off. Then, hold the volume down button and power button down at the same time and that will take you into the bootloader. What you see will look like this:
JEWEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.xx.xxxx - The x's in this case are your bootloader version

Ok, 1.15
Well, there is no S-OFF exploit for 1.15 yet. You can still flash roms, but not firmware. If you want S-OFF, you might want to wait because if you take that OTA it's going to update your bootloader to 1.19.
You can still root though, I used This Method and it worked fine for me.
---------- Post added at 08:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:48 PM ----------
You're also going to have to flash the kernel separately unless you flash a rom that uses the stock kernel.
I read a lot of threads and one think I cant understand...Is there a way to get back to stock ICS or not ? But I dont want to root my phone and thats going to be a problem for me I think

Make a Custom Stock ICS ROM with the new mount point for JB and also the ICS boot.img with it's modules.
If we have a CWM or TWRP recovery JB then we can restore nandroid and fastboot flash the ICS boot.img

It would be great if folks could also add:
1) Did they do the OTA update prior to unlock?
2) Did they figure out a way to keep the apps that disappear after unlock?

It's a bootloader unlock, so you can root, and eventually put custom Roms on there.

I had $200 cash in reserve for August when this phone comes out. Someone wanted to buy my LGOG
sold it for $325

Excuse my ignorance, coming from a GS2, what's an RUU and why is it relevant? And S-Off? How can the H1 flash roms without this whole S-On/Off thing?

An RUU is a rom update utility. It puts everything back to stock. I haven't found one for tmobile yet though. I rooted and unlocked the bootloader and decided even then that I didn't like it. As for s-off that's a beast I won't even touch. I don't know much about it to give you a straight answer, sorry!

I have to send my phone in to T-Mobile because the mic is cutting out sometimes when the screen turns off (proximity sensor turns it off and then sometimes the other person can't hear me at all until I pull the phone away from my face and the screen comes back on). I just got the phone and it was doing that from the get go but I assumed it was network or sim card related. It's not either and I've since rooted the phone.
T-Mobile wants me to send it back to them, but I can't get the RUU yet so what would you do? what is the best way to send it back to t-mobile without the RUU?
Thanks in advance.
Hello, Im pretty new when it comes to rooting/custom recoveries on Android. Today I got the notification that AT&T had a software update so naturally I grabbed it. I re-booted the phone but loaded into TWRP and the update didn't take. I researched a little and came to find out that you can't do OTA updates if you're running custom recoveries. My question now is what's the best way for me to get it? Im running the stock rom from HTC, I'm just rooted and have no desire to run any custom roms at this time (Such as Cyanogen or the like). I've looked around and seen a few .12 custom stock roms, but I've also seen the leaked .ruu file. Not sure how to proceed in terms of getting the update installed. All I really want it is the updated firmware along with my current root access. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am pretty noobish when it comes to this.
Best way is if you are stock rooted now is to flash the stock . 12 rooted that scrosler posted. You can flash without wiping if you want

Thanks for your help, I'll grab that. Just wasn't sure if there was a difference or not...will flashing with a program like ROM manager not wipe the phone?
Just flash from recovery. It doesn't wipe anything

No it's not hard at all, but as I said I'm not looking for any custom roms..simply wanted to remain stock with the latest firmware upgrade. Not sure if the the leaked .ruu that came out a week or so ago would accomplish this or not.

no your phone will not pass the update check
Even though I have the update file already have the update zip? Sorry, I'm incredibly new to android and don't really know how the ota updates function. I just hate to flash a whole Rom for a 20 mb update.

why? the space it will take up on the phone will be the same.
Update OTA's aren't structured like rom's that are packaged for custom recoveries.
Update OTA's also check to make sure the necessary parts are already on the phone so they only update the changed files. If you have altered your device in any way, the OTA will fail. This is a good thing. Less support calls from users whose updates fail.
