Cannot ping tethered SGT - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm using MyWi on my iPhone 4 to create a WiFi hotspot and tether both my laptop and my Galaxy Tab. The purpose is just to run a VNC server then on the iPhone and the tablet and a VNC client on the laptop in order to be able to display the screens of the mobile devices to the laptop and make mobile applications demos.
All the three devices look to share the same network via WiFi (their IP address is the same range, the one set in MyWi). But even if I can run the VNC server on the tablet and see the IP address and port on which I should connect the VNC client to, I cannot connect to the VNC server on the tablet from the laptop. I cannot even ping the tablet whereas I can ping the iPhone and connect via VNC.
Everything works fine if I make the iPhone, tablet and laptop join my home WiFi network. The issue would be therefore related to the tethering...
Anything I should do on the tablet in the context of tethering? In MyWi or on the iPhone that shares the WiFi connection maybe?
Thank you for your help.

[Q] OSX lion l2tp VPN server connection

Posted here, since I believe this is a general and not device specific issue.
So, I have set up a VPN server on OSX Lion Server edition.
It is using l2tp with preshared key and username/password for login.
i(beep) works fine and connects. Laptop works fine and can connect.
But...
1. When Iam on local network (same IP segment) I can connect using Android native l2tp VPN connection setup with PSK and user/pass.
2. When I try to connect from external (3G or other WiFi net) I am unable to connect.
3. When I enabe native tether on Android device, and connect i(beep) to the Android AP, I still am able to connect from i(beep).
These three steps tells me it is not a carrier issue, and possibly an Android issue.
Did anyone experience this (and even better.....did you find a solution)?
Kinda like the l2tp connection for security, and also Lion natively does not supply pptp connection.

I am trying to do the same thing, I havent got the VPN to function yet though but I think its a router issue among other things. I bought a domain name and I am using that with dyndns to help simplify the ip change issues... I am getting a new router to test here next week so hopefully I'll have a better idea.
However now I am worried I'll run into the same issue as you!! lol... Its been a while since you posted, have you found a solution yet?
No. Didn't find a solution, but you might be correct in assuming its a router issue. Have a Netgear myself, and those have had quite a few issues.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I ended up getting a new Airport and it has pretty cool setup integration with the Server / Airport Utility, however I still cannot connect with the VPN connection.
My initial reason to set this up was to use PLEX... AND this actually works very well if I setup my connection through the PLEX connection settings.. but I still can't get it to work with the Android VPN setup.... (tested 3G and WiFi)
..also I cannot get the VPN to work with a Windows PC... tested a Mac (hackintosh) and it worked instantly...
so I think its a Mac thing maybe... Since PLEX is working... I am happy but would still like to get the VPN connection working properly. I suspect I'll need to call Apple about it though
I am also have a similar issue.
OSX Server running 10.6.8
L2TP VPN and PPTP services running
My iPhone and laptop can connect just fine. My HTC One X and HP Touchpad (CM9) can not. Both say the address can not be resolved. The server is sitting in the DMZ and if I enable the web server both devices can resolve to the default welcome page just fine.
1. It isn't a DNS issues since they can connect via the web
2. It isn't a port issue since other clients can connect
Is there some dumb setting i am missing in the VPN setup?
Thanks

OSX Lion Server L2TP VPN and ICS not working
Hey guys.. I got PPTP to work to OSX Lion Server by making sure PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec forwarding were enabled through my router.
Also, make sure to check the VPN logs in /var/log/ppp/vpnd.log to see why it's not connecting..

vnc help

I'm trying to set up vnc between my lumia and my XP laptop. But when I search and trying to connect my fone won't see the laptop. The person sitting next to me with his iPhone can see the laptop amd connect why can't I?
So no one has used the lumia with vnc then?
What program are you using on WP7? What OS is on the laptop?
The laptop is XP and it was just a general free vnc program I found in the market place.

Try entering the IP address of the laptop directly into the VNC client. That should make a direct connection.
But you need to connect the phone to the computer first don't you?
They should connect via the network, you shouldn't need to make a direct connection.
Just check that both phone and pc are on same network and have IP address in the same range. Then you can make the connection by IP address, this is how i connect to my PC.
my phone IP is 192.168.1.80 (given by wireless) , my computer is 192.168.1.81 (given by ethernet, same router).
On my phone i enter 192.168.1.81 and password to connect to the computer.

[Q]ADHOC Network (PC client shares ICS with ADHOC on mobile)

Greetings!
Is it possible (is there an application for it maybe) to create ADHOC network on android mobile phone that DOES NOT share mobile's phone internet connection? PC client with internet will connect to mobile's phone access point and share its internet with the phone!
My situation is as follows:
I have a PC with Win7 Ultimate! Modem that connects to the internet is Huawei cable ADSL (non-wireless). It is configured in BRIDGE mode and set in windows to share its internet connection! I have integrated WiFi - AP b/g card on my motherboard.
I have configured the ADHOC network with WEP encryption on my PC, so my other devices (laptop and my mobile phone, which is HTC HD2 with ANDROID ROM) can connect to my PC and have internet access!
THIS CONFIGURATION, for some reason, DOES NOT work. My laptop and my mobile phone, who are clients, CAN'T CONNECT to my PC ADHOC network! They can detect the network, however they get stuck at "acquiring network address".
My laptop has Win7 Home Edition, so, I have created ADHOC network on him with WEP encryption. Both my PC and my mobile phone, CAN detect the laptop's access point and CAN CONNECT TO IT! My PC (client) then shares his internet connection with laptop (AP) and my mobile phone (client)!
So, in order to have internet through WiFi with my phone, I have to turn on PC and my laptop.
Since I can't connect with my mobile phone on my PC's ADHOC network, I want to try the opposite. I want the mobile phone to be an ADHOC access point WITHOUT internet connection, and my PC will act as a client WITH shared internet access!
Is this possible? If yes, is there an application that can do this (other applications on the market, for example: Barnacle WiFi Tether can create ADHOC network, but WITH internet sharing... I need without)!

[Q] PPTP VPN Routing Issue

I am having some problems with connecting my devices to my server through PPTP VPN. My setup is a DD-WRT router running PPTPd. I can connect to it with my Android over LTE just fine, can surf the internet and can ping devices within my LAN. My subnet is 192.168.0.x, with 192.168.0.1 being the router, 192.168.0.2-99 reserved for static internal IPs, 192.168.0.100-150 reserved for dynamic internal IPs (the DHCP range), and 192.168.0.201-253 reserved for PPTP VPN. My PPTP VPN server is set up as 192.168.0.200, which is the same physical device as 192.168.0.1.
The problem is that devices physically connected my router cannot ping Android nodes connected over VPN. This seems to be an Android issue. When I took my windows 7 laptop to a cafe, connected it to the cafe's network and connected to my home network over VPN, the ping worked both ways. Devices that were physically in my house could ping my windows laptop and my windows laptop could ping them.
I tried the same thing with my Nexus 5 and Nexus 10, both could not be pinged from inside the house (although my Nexus devices could ping devices inside the house).
I am using 4.4.2 KitKat on both my nexus devices and connecting using the built-in PPTP settings menus. Can anyone throw a suggestion my way?
Thanks!

[Q] Run tethered data through a VPN connection

On my phone I connect to a VPN connection, this woks great on the phone but when I tether to my iPad the iPad's traffic will not be ran through the VPN. (I would have to manually connect to the VPN on my iPad)
Is there a way to make tethered internet route through the devices VPN connection?
Thanks.
Technically, it's possible but it might depends on the VPN client you use.
In my case, F-Secure Freedome (a VPN client) is running on my Note 2. I have Note 2 tethered to an Ubuntu machine and an Android tablet. My tablet and laptop post a Germany IP address, while I am on the other side of the ocean.
Make sure that your data plan allows tethering.
Make sure that you are on the cell network. However, USB tether to Wifi VPN on the phone works a bit better. I keep my connection dropped when going all over over the air.
Depending on your flavor of Android your mileage may vary
Note 2 and the tablet are running 4.4 (CM 11 nightlies), Ubuntu is on 14.04.
