Whooowhoooo, good news. Just bought an AT&T Note. Arrived this morning and I just got off the phone with an AT&T rep. I was about to spend the 25 bucks for an unlock code but I had an AT&T account years ago (started with Cingular) so I dug out the account number. I rang the AT&T service number and asked the rep if I could get an unlock code and gave him my old account number and the IMEI. He said ":I'll keep my fingers crossed for you". 20 seconds later he said "I have good news" and gave me the code. I put in my T-Mobile SIM fired up the phone. The screen came up asking for the network unlock code. 8 digits later, success. Sitting on T-Mobile with Edge but soon to flash the T-Mobile ROM and Radio.
Give me 3 lemons to suck to take the smile off my face....
Lucky ass! I'm about to have to pay for mine. I gotta get my Note T-mobile ASAP!
confirmed. was able to get one for my i717 through a chat session just now. loves it!
this will help me determine if i'm going to use my at&t sgn unlocked on tmobile, or trade someone straight up for a tmo one. (making the jump back to at&t in the near future...)
I just got mine! Thanks!
Great news! When I saw the news that they were unlocking iPhones a while back, I started hoping for other phones. The note is now a world phone.

Cool. Might be switching to T-Mobile soon if the rumors of truely unlimited data are true. Love to take my Note with me!
just tried it a few min ago
the lady asked me how long I had the phone.
I told her I bought it Feb of 2012.
She came back within 5 min and gave me the unlock code and instructions.
I'm in Mexico right now so I did the chat option to get my unlock code but when I put in a SIM card from a Mexican carrier the phone never asked me to put in an unlock code am I missing a step?
The rep said that the phone would ask me for a code when I put in a different carriers SIM card. Any ideas?

If you can make phone call for the Mexican carrier, why should you care, you phone might be already unlocked. Save the code to use later on (just in case)
If you're not on a stock rom you can't input the code.

That maybe why my AOKP ROMmed Note didn't respond to a 2008 UK SIM the other night.
Now off to STOCK my Note.
Do you have to have had the phone a while? I was considering switching from AT&T to T-Mobile once their unlimited service comes out (depending on reviews). I just started my contract with AT&T in May but the termination fee is still less than if I would've bought the Note off contract.

From what I recall the last time that I had AT&T unlock a phone for me (3 upgrades back in 2008), you have to have the phone for a least 60 days, and your account must be in good standing (paid in full, on time).
BTW, AT&T gave me my unlock code via online chat in the time between my two posts without any trouble.
I got my Note (as an upgrade) back in May also.

Right -- stock rom and modem, and another carrier's sim card in the phone when you boot.
Was able to get unlock code after 3 hrs with these incompetent reps and supervisors @ AT&T.

I just got my code from the online chat rep. Very easy and fast. Don't call, they're a pain in the ass. With the chat rep, all you need is your phone number, last 4 digit of social, imei number.
To obtain imei number dial *#06#

I wasn't told of one, and I don't expect there to be one.
I was told by the CSR that 5 incorrect entries will permanently lock the phone to AT&T.

I spoke with an AT&T rep today about getting my unlock code since I'll be in korea, but according to them, they cannot unlock my phone since AT&T has an exclusivity contract on my phone until December. I thought I read somewhere that if you ask nicely they will unlock it for you?
Keep calling and keep pestering them. If you get no joy from the rep, get their supervisor/manager on the phone. Eventually you should get someone who will give you the unlock code. It is sometimes a pain getting the code from them, but they should give it to you. Tell them you weren't told anything about exclusivity when you bought the phone, and that you specifically asked about it being unlocked, and was told customer support would do it for you.
If all else fail, try cellunlocker.net
That's how I got mine unlocked.
There is a three day turnaround wait for the code, but if there's no option, what should you do?

Yeah you have to keep calling them and bother them to give you the unlock code... I had a Rep tell me there are no unlock codes but I imagine she didn't know what she was doing so I talked to someone higher up and bam got it...

You can keep calling, but they simply don't give us the unlock codes until December. The codes come from Moto, and AT&T locks them down till exclusivity ends.

I don't see anyone in this particular thread trolling you, and only one person stated they got the code. We are only giving our opinions to try and help you get it. I myself have not asked for the unlock code for the Atrix, but my response was from previous experience, both of myself and people I know with other phones. If there is in fact a contractual reason why they will not give you the code, that's the first time I have heard of it, but that doesn't mean it's not true.
If you need it unlocked badly and are getting no joy from AT&T, I suggest going the cellunlocker.net route as was previously mentioned by Rayan.
AT&T gave me the same bull****, but said that they'll be able to give the code in August. I told them to screw off, got my code from cellunlocker.net for $20, and am a happy customer of T-Mobile. Sadly this was in March, before the AT&T merger.

They haven't merged yet, and it will be over a year for all the legalities to work themselves out. There are many areas where this could fall through.
My company went through a buyout last year, and it took 1-1/2 years for all the attorneys to balance everything according to all the laws, and satisfy the different governing bodies.
Also, there are all the benefits systems, etc. to bring into line, which takes a huge effort outside of the general legal battles.
I doubt you will see the merger finalized for at least a year, and even then it won't be a done deal until the shareholders all agree on a date when T-Mobile USA will actually become AT&T.
This was on television the other night, and I also found it online just now:
It seems that if the deal does not get FCC approval, then AT&T will pay T-Mobile a $3 billion "breakup fee," give them some AWS spectrum it does not need, and give T-Mob a roaming agreement "at an agreeable price."
With that kind of payout if it doesn't happen, AT&T is going to make sure they take their time, cross all their t's, and dot all their i's so it goes through OK and they don't end up with half a network.
In a nutshell, you don't have to worry until you are another 2 phone generations away! LOL
Okay, thanks for all the information. I'm going to try talking to them in store since I'll be there to replace my phone anyway. Thanks all.
Hello first timer here
I saw couple posts about Straight Talk on the ATT Note. I currently have the note in contract with ATT for about 3 months. Judging from the previous posts the i717 works completely fine with ST. What is the fastest way for me to get on ST? Will I have to pay the early termination fee in order to get onto ST? Is it worth paying the fee? Your input is greatly appreciated! thanks again
Yes. $175. Just order the sim now from ST and let the clock run down.
So, how can I request to keep my ATT number? I'm assuming that I have to request the change before I cancel my ATT contract? Correct me if I'm wrong, sorry for the questions!

What you're referring to is called a number port. To do this you'll need your at&t account information: account #, account password/pin, etc. When you get your ST sim simply go to straight talks website and follow the instructions to activate a phone with a number from another company.
Once all the info is entered, as long as everything is correct, it should take from 20 minutes to a couple hours. It took mine 30 when I did it.
Keep the at&t sim in your note until you can't make any calls. At that point the ST sim should be active. Put it in your phone, change the APN settings to what came with the ST package and you should be good to go.
There's no need to call at&t as porting your number automatically cancels your service with your previous provider. You'll just receive a final bill for what you used that month along with the early termination fee.

Hey guys, I just wanted to put y'all up on something. I found this seller on Ebay that sells unlock codes for around $3.50 US. I bought a code yesterday and he sent it out to me early this morning. He is a UK seller. To enter in the unlock code, all you have to do is put in your SIM that is locked, go to the dialer, type in 2945#*769# instead of the other code that he gives you. Then you go on the first option and type in the code (on the first line) that he gives you.
I just wanted to put y'all up on this so y'all could take advantage of this! $3.50 to get your phone unlocked? Sold! I am one happy customer. I hope this is the right section to put it on. :/

@queboy89 legit! Thanks for posting that! It's good to have your phone unlocked, just in case something ever happens and you need to for example, change carriers or move out of the country.
@omgbossis21 hmm. really? I thought manufacturers don't give codes out anymore? That's what I heard from HTC, so I might be wrong. I had to pay $10 for my Sensation code.

Quick update that I didn't mention: T-Mobile will indeed provide SIM unlock codes, provided the device was purchased from a T-Mobile authorized dealer with a valid receipt. I had gotten mine in the Amazon deal, so it wasn't eligible.

So they (tmobile ) changed the way of do things ?
they provided me with the unlock code of a samsung exibith 4g like a year ago, and they havent asked me for any receipt whatsoever
the only constraint was that you need to have a good standing account of at least 90 days active, so they check that with your phonw # in their database and then
they send the request to the "unlocking" department, you get the code via email
in around 24hrs and it worked like a charm for me, now i am planning to get the L9, the 3.5 screen is getting too small as i am getting older :silly:

Bah, sometimes, I need to be careful with my words. I meant authorized dealer as in the actual T-Mobile stores. Amazon is certainly an authorized dealer, but I was ineligible in getting the SIM unlock code from T-Mobile. You have to purchase directly from T-Mobile's brick and mortar stores or website.
I believe that in your case, it would be dependent on whether you get the phone on contract or not. Because the L9 is sold both as a prepaid phone and on contract, there are different rules regarding SIM unlocks. The rules you stated are for the phone if you re-sign your contract and get the phone at the subsidized price. If you choose to purchase the phone outright, whether through the prepaid plan package or for a postpaid plan, then T-Mobile should and will provide the code immediately. It's currently $240 for the phone outright from T-Mobile's website, free if you sign a 2 year agreement, and $179 from Amazon. It's possible the stores are selling the same Amazon prepaid package for a lower price than the outright price listed on the T-Mobile website.
They probably didn't ask you for your receipt because you got your phone as part of a contract renewal/signing, and on a federally subsidized discount. In that case, they prefer to know that you aren't jumping ship from your contract before fully paying for your phone.
Sorry for any confusion I may have caused!

I might be a good idea to specify "carrier unlock" in the subject line (not to be confused with "bootloader unlock").

That is sort of what I was going to say, everyone should be able to get the code for free from their carrier. The problem is that some have rules of not giving up the code until after contract or other restrictions.

I have an ATT LG G2 w/ Straight Talk (I worked for years in the cellular industry so I figured I could avoid their CS issues 95% of the time). Working great, and no issues, but always looking at options. Had the Verizon unlimited plan, and realized I use data so little lately (most is on WiFi and only transit times are really on true data) that it made no sense to pay a ridiculous sum for what I used my phone for.
Have a T-MO SIM at home, they were like 1 buck shipped so I picked up a Micro and Nano just in case for a fast swap, so I may try their 70/7GB plan out and play a little more data heavy (my work re-reimburses 70 so anything up to there is a wash for me).
Ahhhh the joys of number porting, and GSM phones. Play w/ everything until you find the sweet spot.

This part confused me. You don't use much data but are going for a 7gb plan?
At any rate, how is Straight-Talk? I believe they recently started offering ATT network. I have used the tmo prepaid plan and that worked nicely.
Thanks
I don't use it normally, but that's just by habit. I may try being a little bit less data conscious w/ it if I try since my out of pocket isn't different between the two plans. I used to be a lot more data heavy, but with WiFi going everywhere I make it a point to drop onto trusted networks because it's easier on my battery (in addition to the obvious data savings). I was using under 2GB max monthly with my VZN Unlimited plan so it made no sense to pay over 2x what I am now with ST for it and I changed.
It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems. Their CS I've heard nightmares about, but I haven't had an issue. Their site freaked out and error'd during my PORT REQUEST and it billed my card 2x, and didn't port. I hit up their online person and they gave me a case and # to call. Called and within 30mins they had my port in process, 1 charge applied to it, and the other crediting back. So that particular instance was fine.
My only gripe is if you're an LTE speed purist as they appear to use a proxy that varies. I did a WHAT IS MY IP a minute ago and it was a service in FL (I'm in AZ) and another time I think it showed somewhere in CA. So they're using a proxy service which is going to cut your speeds depending on the hops back / forth / destination. Overall, though, for 45 bucks a month I have no complaints.
"It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems."
This is what interested me, precisely. I am not worried about speed. Honestly, if I get more than 4 or 5 mbit, I am prefectly happy, since I don't do much on the phone that really requires high speeds...like torrenting
with TMO 4g, I was getting up to 12mbit. With att lte and my particular home location, I am lucky to see 12mbit (although in areas near me I have seen 52mbit). But, TMO has a few dead spots in my area that att doesn't. At some point I will probably eat the ETF and go to a prepaid.
Thanks for the info.

NP. I simply activated, threw on CleanROM, tossed in the new APN settings and I was good to go. LTE and MMS worked right away. You do need the new SIM card I'm hearing so it flags LTE ability in the system, but I was a new customer anyhow so that's what they sent (and had free shipping when I ordered it).
That's really all that matters... your personal experience. I dig Prepaid because I bought all my phones anyways (I really hate contracts because I'm technology finicky) so it seemed like a better option to change to a GSM carrier since I was being sent a phone for our game anyways and I just had to choose the phone / carrier. Now I can service bounce if I want, and not pay ridiculous VZN prices. Switching my wife to her own VZN plan (we've had it so long they had a single line 60 dollar plan for unlimited/unlimited/2GB) and giving her my iPhone 5 and then changing to ST we save like 50 a month. Even if I bump my plan we still save (not counting my work paying for 70 anyways). It was a no brainer.
Haven't had an Android phone for an extended period since the OG Droid on Verizon and I'm loving the LG G2 and where Android is now.

Yeah, I kept my previously used tmo sim just for unlocking. It expired and I would have to get a new one. As to buying on contract, doing the math, I can wait a couple months, cancel the contract, pay the etf and should be cheaper than buying it outright for almost $700. I have to be as cheap as possible these days
is this also work in india if phone is bought from usa?

Can confirm working. Plopped in my MetroPCS SIM and it's working like a charm. Cheapest SIM unlock I've ever found, short of doing it yourself (I'm looking at you T-mo GS3)
Today, I called Verizon to request a sim card for a Nexus 6P that I just ordered.
I was expecting problems; however, after I provided the IMEI number that was on the Google order confirmation (It is actually the "Device ID number minus the final zero.), which the phone rep looked up, and saw that it was a Nexus; he then said I could pickup a sim card at any retail Verizon store for free, but that if they sent me one by mail, there would be a $6.99 fee for shipping and handling. I replied that I would prefer to pay the S/H fee rather than wait in line for more than 1 hr at a store. He then said that not only would they send the sim card, but that they would increase my data allowance an additional 12GB/month, making the total 30GB/month for an entire year, completely free of charge, and with no catches. Of course, I was very pleased, and quite surprised to say the least.
Knowing Big Red, I really wonder if there are truly "no catches".
What do you think is going on here?
You have a phone that can be used on any carrier. Verizon has to treat you like a human once they don't have you on a leash. You can move to any carrier at any moment.

18GB/mo how much are you paying for that? Is this on Verizon's "new" plan? Agreed with the other comment, they need to play a little bit nicer now to keep their customers.
Guess they don't have much of a choice since T-Mobile just announced yesterday that they're doubling everyone's data for free.
I did this online and got a new nano-sim sent to me for free, no S/H fees.
I walked into a Verizon store and said I needed a nano sim for my new phone. After waiting a bit, the guy entered my IMEI into the computer and grabbed a new sim, and then I was on my way. Probably the least painful experience I've ever had at a Verizon store.

Any advantage to them entering your IMEI into their system? I just took my SIM card out of my other phone.

I'm using 1 that I cut down from micro sim to nano sim, out of my Note 2. Because back then it was such a hassle dealing with Verizon. They would refuse to help you at the store, if you had a Nexus. After an hour on the phone with tech support you could get 1. Or you could just cut 1 down to size. It's a tight fit & I've always wanted an official nano sim. But if I had a real nano sim I would just put in.

Pretty much sounds like my experience getting the sim card. Didn't have to provide a IMEI though and the rep waived the shipping fee. Wasn't offered any plan changes but the other companies hadn't just changed their plans either. Activation also ended up being very easy as well FYI.
I called him up two weeks ago and ordered one on the phone without an issue. I didn't have the phone yet so I didn't even have those numbers. Not a single problem. They even overnighted it to me and didn't charge me a thing. When my phone showed up I put the card in and it didn't automatically activate so I called them up and they had me shut down my old phone and this one read them the IMEI and then start this one back up and it worked perfectly fine. I'd say between the two phone calls I spent maybe 15 minutes on the phone, only 5 to activate it and 10 to order it.
Just switched my 6p order from Huawei to Google last night as I didn't want to wait another month and I'll be receiving it tomorrow (that's crazy fast). I was going to get the nano sim ahead of time since I had so much of it, but now I think I'll just go tomorrow to my local verizon corporate store as it's less than 5 minutes from the house and I'll let them install the nano sim and activate it after I receive the phone.
I know others have done this with great success and I expect the same. Glad you had a good experience.

Sorry to drag this up from last month, but I'm curious to know how the phone shows up when you're looking at the account on the My Verizon website. Is the IMEI truly in their database, or does it show up as a generic Non-VZW Device? It was months before they added the IMEIs from the non-VZW Nexus 6 purchased from Google/Motorola to their database. The IMEI must be in their database for you to get the month to month (off contract) discount, which is $25/mo if you've got a 6GB plan or more.
It sounds like from the comments here that they've improved their internal processes and can actually manually add the IMEI over the phone, which would be great news.
My device (and my husband's) both show up as HUAWEI-H1511 under My Devices on Verizon. I didn't even need to contact them. Just switched the SIM card from my old Droid Maxx and it updated the model on their site immediately.

Same here. Came from a Note 3 which used a micro sim. Got a nano sim cutter, cut the sim, and popped it into the 6p. Up and running in less than 5 minutes. Couldn't be simpler
