[SOLVED] Can't get to download mode - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I've been dealing with a few unrelated problems that lead to try flashing a different bootloader onto my phone. Now that I've done this, I cannot get into download mode at all. The usual button presses do nothing and I even tried the AIO Vibrant Toolbox, but selecting the option for download mode simply reboots the phone and does nothing.
At this point, I simply want to go back to stock, but I'm not sure how to do that without being able to go into download mode and using odin. I am currently able to boot up into my rom and even boot the recovery manager as well. Is there anything I can do at this point?

Just for starters, I'm sure this is silly of me to ask. But just for verification, you know that GB boot loader has a diff button combo to get to download mode right?
Press and hold volume up + power button. This would give you yellow download icon. Then you'd plug in USB cable.

Actually, it seems I asked the foolish question, as you were exactly right!
I've been mistaken about my BL for a long time it seems, I thought that the this method was the old way, not the new one.
In any case, thank you so much.

Glad I could help.

wow thank u guys, i made the same dumb mistake and was trying all these complicated forms of fixing it. Passed up simplicity.

[Q] How bad can brick be?

I've read some people who have tried rooted there phones have completely bricked the phone to the point they cant restore it? Is this really possible? Because i have had my phone for some time now, and am thinking of rooting but dont want to break it...
Thanks
If you get the Phone ---> Computer screen and you have locked hardware access, there is no fix for it right now (unless you're lucky and somehow get adb to work).
If your phone can get to download/recovery mode from a powered down state (using the physical buttons) then its pretty much unbrickable.
Edit: I have locked hardware access and I rooted my phone. It seems pretty low-risk as far as I can tell.
it really only happens to people who can't properly read instructions right or when they're flashing things labeled 'BETA'.. i would personally attempt to get into download mode using physical buttons, if you're able to do that and you know how to flash back to stock using Odin.. you're fine, search the forum for instructions on getting to Download mode.
Being rooted will have NO risk of bricking your phone.
It's flashing custom roms and such that poses the risk.
I'm glad my Vibrant isn't hardware locked like the newer ones. I got the Phone--Computer error when flashing the gps fix/beta rom. Luckily, it was super easy to fix, but if I couldn't use the volume buttons it's impossible.
So, if you want to get root to do things like share your wifi or have adblocking on your phone, you'll have no real risk, but flash at your own risk.
Edit:
See if you can get into download mode by using your hardware buttons.
Turn your phone off
Plug into USB on your computer
Wait until battery status comes up
Hold down both volume keys and power. When powered up, stop hitting power.
If you get into download mode, your chances of actually bricking your phone are significantly lower than they would be if you couldn't. Not 0%, but definitely a lot better odds going in your favor.
The software really should've been called Loki because it's a tricky bastard and just likes to randomly screw you over.
EDIT2:
OK, Turns out the way I suggested you get into download mode is the hard way (it was how I learned to do it).
The EASY way is to plug your USB cable into the computer but NOT the PC.
Turn off your phone.
Hold down both volume keys and plug the USB in.
The phone should power up in download mode without you even needing to hit power.
ok but is there a difference between download and recovery
- Recover shows you a nice menu with a few options.
Allows user to use menus with the use of his Vol +/- and power button
- Download shows a HUGE triangle with an android digging with a shovel and says download
Normally used to flash with ODIN

Reading and understanding instructions will almost always prevent this ..... taking some time to research the basics is a plus....
ROOTING never causes bricking .,..,.,. USER error is the culprit 100% of the time ....
"completely bricked the phone to the point they cant restore it"
You said it .,.,. this is what is ment by bricked *no boot at all*.. only way to fix on some devices is by the use of Jtags(See xda-WIKI). Only android device that has this option so far is the G1 ( don't know if they got it 100% working yet )... Not being able get into download mode because of locked hardware buttons is not bricked... just got to find a work around ,or find out how they are locking the buttons ...

[Q] Flashed my phone with the wrong firmware, stuck in recovery mode please help!

Hey everyone, i need help with my galaxy s phone, i recently thought it would be a good idea to try upgrading my phone to the new gingerbread firmware 2.3
the problem is that i used the version for the vibrant phone, dumb mistake i know, but it was late and i wasn't thinking clearly, anyways my phone is now stuck in recovery mode and i cant do anything.
I cant get into download mode to reflash and i cant select any of the options im givin in the recovery menu, is there any way to fix this?
As far as getting into download mode, are you sure you are holding vol down with no battery in as you connect to your computer? You need to Odin back to stock in order to recover your phone. (Just FYI, there is no official gingerbread support, and the two roms we current have on gb are CM7 and Kaoscinate v7, both of which are awesome, but not fully functional at this point)

thanks for responding artvandelay440, holding down vol button while connecting to my computer via usb does nothing, the phone wont turn on. I also tried holding down the volume button, connecting the usb, then putting in the battery and it just boots up and goes straight to the recovery mode, i guess my main problem i need to solve right now is how to get to download mode.
I check some other forums and looked into how to get the download mode to pop up when your having problems, tried them all and nothing worked, except for the command prompt thing, which i couldnt figure out how to do.
a while back someone did the exact same thing as you. there was no way he got it I to recovery mode after because of the differences in hardware between the fascinate and vibrant. sorry buddy
If you can't get into download mode, there is no hope that we can offer. Just to be sure, you take the battery out, hold the volume down key, and then while still holding it, you plug the USB cable in. If that isn't working, then you are SOL. What file did you flash, and can you link to it?

the command line thing you are referring to is using ADB to reboot into either recovery or bootloader by the command "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot bootloader" No such option for d/l mode, though i'm afraid.

I wonder if the vibrant has a different button combo to get to download, and if it is remaped to that. Just something to look into. EDIT: NO, it is the same.
Try doing: adb reboot download - It works on a Vibrant according to the thread that I looked at. If that works, you are one lucky person, but it is always worth a try. You may not even be able to adb at all.
You could always try to make/buy a download mode jig.

Yeah, I almost forgot about that. The question is.. Does it always work? I would think that it could work here since it is still a galaxy s varient flashed over. I'm not sure how deep down the download mode is and if it can be deleted/overwritten/corrupted. This is definitely worth it to save an expensive smartphone like the fascinate.

[Q] Bootloop: I'm an idiot...

My SGH-i777 is running the latest ported ROM based on the CM9 March 23rd nightly. I've made a terrible mistake. I was renaming my last backup via ROM Manager, and decided I might as well do another one since my set up was where I wanted it. Like an idiot, I did it via RM, even though I've read there's a bug. Well, needless to say my phone won't boot past the Samsung yellow triangle boot screen.
I've been searching for the best method to fixing the issue, but can't find a solid answer. I'm able to get into download mode, I'm just not sure the safest route from here...
I originally rooted via heimdall on a Mac, but also have a PC - which I'm actually currently downloading ODIN on there.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
If you can get into download mode use the full version of Odin to flash a kernel with cwm and uncheck auto reboot. Then you should be able to hold both volume keys with power to get into recovery. Then you can reflash cm9
You really have to make sure to uncheck auto reboot though cause any non ics kernel booting ics won't be good.
EDIT: to avoid this, are you able to get into cwm by holding both volume keys + power?

Thanks for the quick reply. OK, I'll try as soon as I get ODIN on my PC. No, I'm not able to get into CWM. Holding both volume keys + power just results in the Samsung boot screen.
I was able to use ODIN to flash a kernel with CMW, and got a PASS! - and I didn't check off Auto Reboot...
My phone is still showing the download mode screen, though, a progress bar is now visible.
From here, should I:
pull the battery
unplug USB
place the battery back in
volume up + down + power to CWM
reflash CM9
I thought I replied, but looks like it didn't go through.
Anyway, thanks again. I did pretty much exactly what you said, and I'm back on a fresh CM9 build, everything working.
So lesson learned...uninstall ROM Manager so I don't make a careless mistake like that again.

Can you get into download mode, like I could? Otherwise, I wouldn't know, sorry.
If you can, this is what I did (it worked for me, hopefully for you too, but you might want to search/read more before you dive in, just in case your problem isn't the same as mine):
power phone down
download a kernel with CWM to PC
if you never have, download/install drivers/Kies to PC
plug USB cable into phone/PC (phone still off)
hold vol down + power on phone to enter download mode
launch Odin on PC
uncheck reboot in Odin (important!)
add the kernel
run Odin
once you see PASS! in Odin, and the progress bar full/complete on your phone you're on the home stretch
while still plugged in, pull the phone battery
unplug USB from phone
battery back in
hold vol up + vol down + power to enter CWM
re-flash CM9
reboot
Good luck! Let me know how you make out.
Thanks
Turns out the only way I could get into download mode was pulling the battery, connecting to PC, holding power and volume and reconnecting to PC. Went right into download mode and I'm able to fix from there. Thanks so much! Didn't know that one! Appreciate all your help!

CWM recovery boot sequence/menu navigation issue

Hello
I rooted my Galaxy s2 i777 using 2.3.6 (I think that was it - what ATT pushed out earlier in the summer) and next flashed CWM using ODIN. I noticed that the menus weren't working in CWM. When I use the home or menu buttons it just toggles a logo screen, and power does nothing (volume keys do work). I noticed others had this issue with this phone but didn't encounter any solutions.
Poking around the Rom Manager application I noticed a reboot into recovery mode feature and thought I'd try it. It did as advertised. But now when I reboot by holding down power it immediately reboots into recovery mode. I'm guessing what happens is the "reboot into recovery mode" feature put itself at the head of the boot sequence and instead of removing itself from there on load, which it probably should, it waits until the user exits the program cleanly. Unfortunately, because I can't get the keys to work in the program, the only way I can exit is to hold down power. I can navigate to the "power off" or "reboot" options but I can't execute them (press "enter"). So it stays at the head of the boot sequence (just my theory) and I can't get out. Actually when I power off by holding down the power key the phone just reboots immediately, right back into cwm recovery, so there seems to be something more going on.
I have a backup of the system but I can't figure out how to get out of the sequence. I tried the download mode and recovery mode key sequences but they don't work (not even sure if they're supposed to work in this recovery screen). Any ideas? I have a backup of the system, so I'm happy to attempt scorched earth suggestions. Kies can't recognize the phone anymore. Many thanks.

1. you obviously flashed a kernel WITH CWM via Odin.
2. Rom Manager should not be used.
Flash a rooted stock ROM via ODIN.
read around in the stickies of the i777 forum, and get acquainted with things.
Boot into CWM correctly, and go about flashing whatever you want knowing what you just learned by reading the correct stuff.
Welp, first things first.
1. Read, search, Google, only look at results from this forum, i.e. the ATT Galaxy S2 I777 forums on XDA. Any info from any other sites is more likely to get you nowhere or brick your phone further.
2. After having done so, you'll learn never to use Rom Manager. EVER.
3. Also after having done #1, you'll learn to never try to flash CWM separately. As Moto implies, CWM for our phones is built into custom kernels, it is not separate.
4. Follow this guide to start over and get back to stock.
5. Then follow this guide to root and flash custom ROMs and kernels.
You sound like an intelligent guy, so as long as you do more reading around here you'll figure everything out slowly. Make sure to read stuff multiple times until you fully understand everything, and feel free to ask questions about stuff you don't understand, but only after reading said guides multiple times.
EDIT: Gah Moto, why you gotta post ahead of me D:
Actually the problem is most likely the fact that he is probably using an old version of cwm where the home button selects stuff. And rom manager.

Thanks, that did it. I'd actually read the stickies, I just didn't think I could get into download mode because the phone was stuck in that auto-reboot loop.
For anyone else stuck in that loop cwm recovery loop, the download mode entry method (press both volume keys and insert usb) needs to be timed just so, since you usually perform the sequence when the phone is powered down (in stable way) but in this situation you only have a moment before it restarts. After powering down, just as it restarts automatically you can see the capacitative buttons blink for an instant, and that's when I started the sequence. Took me about half a dozen times but I eventually caught it. Am I the only one struggling with how hard these captchas are getting over the years? there's probably a sticky for that too I guess nvm.
If I'm not mistaken you can get into download mode without having a battery plugged in, so no need for trying to time it. Just hold volume buttons and plug in USB. For future reference; glad you got it worked out. Make sure to read the second guide thoroughly so you know how to safely flash stuff, and hit my thanks button if i helped you out.

[Q] Soft Brick?

Hello All,
First, let me say how much I've enjoyed reading this Forum and how much I LOVED my TMobile Samsung Vibrant 3G. While it worked for a long time running Froyo 2.2 with a Bionix Next-Gen V2 ROM, it was fantastic, but lately the microphone had been dying (I sounded more and more muffled no matter what I did). So I flashed up to ICS and installed Chimera to see if that might help. While the phone ran beautifully except for several apps that were rather wonky, I was getting more and more muffled.
So the other day I decided to restore my Nandroid backup, however when I flashed back I got stuck on the Vibrant boot screen. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get to Recovery.
How do I get back to Recovery from this? I have never used Odin, the only time I've ever hooked the phone up to the computer was when I originally flashed from Eclair to Froyo many moons ago. So please let me know if I'm missing something.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
You made a mistake when you tried to restore a 2.2 based backup from ICS base ROM. Now you must Odin to stock, its not that hard. First you will need to download the Odin program. I'm assuming you have device drivers on your PC but double check. Next you need 2 files, the 512 pit and jfd firmware file. Once you have those files you need to get in download mode.

OK I installed Odin and the necessary files and drivers, I plugged in the phone, but when I try to turn it on into Download Mode the Vibrant doesn't respond. There's just the little spinning light in the center of the screen. Odin doesn't recognize the phone either.
Anything else I can do?
Odin won't recognize unless you are in DL mode. I linked a video, I know it says captivate. Don't worry about the mod etc just follow it to get in download mode.

OK watched the video, but 2 things:
-when I try to boot into Recovery it gets stuck on the Vibrant Samsung initial splash screen and never moves, even when holding down the 3 buttons;
-this video assumes I can access the phone to install the fix or anything else. I can't, it just stays stuck in the splash screen;
-I tried holding down the 3 buttons and simultaneously plugging in the USB cable, and still nothing but the splash screen;
-is there any way to turn on the device while hooked into the computer so Odin or something else can use the necessary files to turn it on and make it accessible?
Thanks all for your patience and advice, it's much appreciated. I LOVE this little phone and really want to heal her!
Hi,
I think you have tried to go to recovery mode using 3 button combo. But in order to use ODIN device has to be in DOWNLOAD MODE which can be done using following steps
1)start off with phone turned off
2)press down volume up, and volume down at same time, and never let go until you get into download mode. DON'T touch the power button
3) while holding down both volume buttons get your usb cable which is connected to your computer
4)plug in the usb cable into your phone, while you still hold down both up/down volume buttons at same time. Don't touch the power button.
5)As soon as you plug your usb cable into your phone, the phone will instantly go into Download mode.
6)You may now release the volume buttons

NOTE: here is a link I found. Just take a look http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-access-download-and-recovery-mode-in-samsung-vibrant/
OK we are trying to get download mode not recovery. Your phone must be off for download mode. If it flashes vibrant screen you have gone to far and something is wrong. I specifically said pay no attention to the mod in video. Regardless I think you might need a jig to get in download mode.

OK, noob error (smacks head), I kept saying Recovery Mode when what I needed was DL Mode, my sincerest apologies.
I got into DL Mode finally by holding down the Volume buttons (not the Power button), then plugging in the USB cable. The Vibrant promptly went into DL mode. Odin recognized the phone and off we went. It's now back to Stock Eclair (yuck).
So next question: am I rooted or do I have to do that all over again? And if so, what's the fastest way to do it so I can flash to the ROMs I knew and loved?
Lastly, a great big THANK YOU to samsgun357 & haarsh for all your assistance, you guys ROCK! :good:

Happy Flashing :good:
Yep, got it rooted and flashed Cyanogen7, then flashed up to an ICS ROM (started with Chimera but it's a tad wonky so flashed over to Euphoria, we'll see how that goes).
That said, the microphone is still sounding very muffled, so I think it's a hardware issue. I was due for an upgrade anyway so I picked up the Samsung 4G Blaze (nice since the Vibrant I had was the 3G). So right now I'm just having fun exploring Android on the Vibrant while I read up on how to root and improve the Blaze.
I will miss this little phone though, it was light and super fast and agile, perfectly sized, especially compared to the mini-tablets coming out lately like the Samsung SIII and LG L9 or HTC One. I prefer smaller phones, so the Blaze fits the bill right now even though it's heavier than my old Vibrant.
Thanks again for everyone's assistance, VERY much appreciated! :good:

Download mode IS what you need to use Odin a get back to stock.
The above post shows the button combo for DL mode and recovery based on which bootloaders you're running (thanks haarsh). If you haven't flashed GB boots, you have froyo boots.
Now make sure you have the correct Odin files and drivers on your PC.
The goal here is to get power to the phone, while holding button combo, from the PC.
Do a battery pull/replace. Plug USB into computer
While holding your button combo (see above) plug the phone in.
Hopefully you see DL mode
Also try pulling battery, plug USB in PC and phone
While holding button combo, pop the battery back in.
This can be tricky sometimes so don't give up.
OK. Let me backup and give you more info.
So sorry...
I rooted, but was unable to download ROM manager from the Store (im assuming bc it was running Froyo).
I was able to get CMW to install via update.zip. Once installed the phone was going directly into recovery when asked (3 button method). It would go into the Anroid recovery, first and then from continually installing CMW, go into CMW.
From there i installed a CM10 nightly.
Install went fine, but no mobile data connection. I went back to CMW and restored the original ROM, rebooted and am stuck w/ the pinwheel.
I can't get into to download mode AT ALL. I've tried the various button methods with no luck.
From what I did, I can assume that 2.1 IS installed on the phone.
Thoughts?
Thank you so much for the help.
Well the issue you have was caused by going back to a 2.1 or 2.2 build from cm10 through cwm. You should have used Odin to get back to stock.
If you can't get in DL mode manually you will need to buy a DL jig. You can get them from www.mobiletechvideos.com also from amazon I think. You can also make one yourself, just search USB download jig, you should find it.
