Experience on installed the android revolution 3.0.1 rom - HTC Amaze 4G

Hey all, this is my virgin post, I'm as well a newbie at flashing stuff. The reason for posting this is just to share my experience so hopefully people won't encounter as much trouble as I just did.
First of all, of course you need to download the four required files.
SUPER WIPE - Android_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe_Amaze_4G
The actual rom - Android_Revolution_HD-Amaze_4G_3.0.1.zip
The firmware - PH85IMG.zip
The radio - Radio_1.14.550L.17DC_30.78.550L.15.zip <------- unlike others, this one u actually need to unzip ^_^
Now that you have the files, let them sit tight on your desktop. You need to S-OFF your device. This basically means you are permitted to flash any rom you want after you are S-OFFed. For this, I think I did some crazy stuff I don't even understand.
I used controlbear's S-OFF method. He (or she) has got a website set up for this. For HTC Amazers, go here: http://unlimited.io/juopunutbear-public-beta-0-1/instructions/htc-amaze/. Depending on your operating system and the version of your Amaze, you need to download the S-OFF tool. Since I am using Windows and was S-OFFing a 2.x Amaze, I had to download the Windows GB version of the tool. (WINDOWS GB MD5 sums are inside the zip file)
Follow controlbear's instructions carefully on his website, I give you two points of advice:
The insulated wire he talks about is basically a bronze/copper wire with plastic/rubber covering it. You need a slightly thicker wire and have the rubber on both ends of the wire removed with a knife or something so the copper inside is showing.
When you are "touching" the GND spot indicated on the diagram, obviously you need to have the back cover of your Amaze removed. So why not remove it first before starting the whole process as when your USB cable is attached to your phone you can't remove the back cover.
Controlbear is so right about something, that is you DO NEED SEVERAL tries before getting the timing right. So don't worry, give it a lot of tries.
Next you need to SuperCID your Amaze. Honestly, I have no idea what this does whatsoever. But luckily the process is simple and straight forward. Just follow instruction: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612475
Now here comes the flashing!
The rommer of android revolution said you need to flash 4EXT Touch Recovery. I thought every custom recovery would do the job. Anyway, just google 4EXTRecoveryUpdater.apk, or try to find it in google play. It's a lot easier to flash it while you still had the system installed.
Then you need to upgrade the firmware. Which has everything to do with the PH85IMG.zip.
Apparently, this isn't something you can flash through recovery. You need to place this file (in its zipped form) in the root of your SD card, and go to bootloader (the first menu right after you power+vol.down). It's gonna automatically detect it and ask you to update. power up = update, power down = abort. I accidentally clicked power down TWICE...
When you've finished updating your firmware, do a super wipe. This is done by going in to the custom recovery and install "Android_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe_Amaze_4G.zip" from sd card.
The super wipe process is followed by another install from sd card. This time you install the ROM "Android_Revolution_HD-Amaze_4G_3.0.1.zip".
OK, the rommer did warn us about having to wait a while for the first boot. But I thought I somehow bricked my phone...
No, you do need to be patient about it. Let it load. When your Amaze is up, you need to follow the instruction and flash a radio file. THIS IS DONE ON YOUR COMPUTER. You don't need recovery mode for this one.
Last but not least, I've had some problem with enabling mobile data on my Amaze. Turns out I needed to add a APN for it. Google your carrier's APN setting, NOT ALL OF THEM ARE CORRECT!!!
Good luck flashers! Don't brick it!

ULTIMATE INSTALLTION GUIDE. Includes every step.

Now this isn't completely my own guide, it is a guide hobbled together from other people's own guides, but has always worked for me. I run a Titan like the rest of you. My flavour is the HTC P4000 sold through Telus.
**INSTALLING FROM USB**
1. First, you'll want to BACK UP AT LEAST YOUR CONTACTS and anything else in the phone memory that you cannot live without Anything on your memory card will not be an issue.
2. Get your unlock code, msid, and msn and any other account/phone info before updating to a gps/rev. a radio as some people have lost it during the transition. they can view their info using ##778# on sprint phones ans they can use getspc to get their unlock code from their esn hex. (contributed by elgreek84).
3. Download Olipro 2.40.0 by clicking on the following link. http://www.fileshex.com/download.php?file=b8a2c4622ebdb1c857ac6cf068e6f818 and install it.
4. Download the latest Sprint rom, becaues it upgrades you to the latest Radio ROM 3.35.04 effortlessly. The Sprint rom is available from the HTC usa support site here. http://www.htc.com/us/FAQ_Detail.aspx?p_id=75&act=sd
Click on "Download Version 3.35.651.2".
5. Make sure your phone is connected through usb and start the last program you just downloaded. Once it is complete and it asks you to adjust your stylus settings, press the right side power button, camera button at the same time, and also press in the bottom reset button and HOLD IT until you see the multi colour boot loader. It'll look like a tv test screen.
6. Now at this point you'll need to go into Activesync settings, should be connection settings. In Vista (yes, I use Vista 64 bit and it works perfectly) go into the control panel and double click on "Windows Mobile Device Center" and uncheck the usb connection. In WinXP in Activesync it should be under the connection settings under file or edit.
7. Right.. now you're ready to download the latest rom which is compatible with the radio you flashed. If you're on Sprint and want regular Sprint, go ahead and stop at step 4 and configure the stylus settings, but if you want even better, go to DCD's rom here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376150 and install "ROMs (by |||bored|||):" I downloaded the Telus once since I'm on Telus.
8. Enjoy! Now install the apps and set up your settings, and synchronize your contacts and settings. Don't forget to re-enable that usb settings in the Windows Mobile Device center.
I'm fairly sure that pretty much covers it. This isn't my own work, I've just followed bits and pieces that are already available on this excellent website.
The DCD thread covered much of it but a few of you still seem to be having problems with it. I hope it helps those that are still out of the loop.

Installing from SD card. (contributed by Keystone).
Easy installation:
HINT: Avoid hassles with your USB connection and PC by flashing via the microSD card
Third party ROMs require a functioning and specific unlocking boot loader. Note what version is required for the ROM that you intend to boot into, or else you will face stuck staring at the boot screen.
No third party ROM include a functioning radio ROM. Note what radio is required for your chosen ROM. Radio 3.35.04 is required for those based off of the latest Sprint release.
via the microSD card flashing method (below), upgrade your Titan to the radio via the full Sprint 3.35.651.2 ROM (an executable archive, right click to extract the RUU_signed.nbh ROM file)
do NOT boot into the OS after flashing to this ROM.. After screen calibration Sprint customisations will run and alter your EPST settings to that operators settings.
Repeat the microSD flashing routine to flash to your chosen OS ROM.
I. OEMizer (optional)
Run OEMizer.exe from the kitchen's tool directory.
Complete your choices to customise your Titan's OS/Owner/Data/etc configurations
Hit the 'Create OEM' buttom for the customizations to be written into the kitche's OEM directory.
Build your ROM via the kitchen.
II. Kitchen
Run BuildNB.bat to execute BuildOS.
Hit the play button when you have selected your choices.
Exit BuildOS once it has completed.
Let the batch file complete its jobs.
quit the ROM Upgrade utility when it loads up and skip onto the following instructions on how to flash via the microSD card method.
OR follow through to finish the flash with the ROM Upgrade Utility via the USB.
III. PagePool Changer (optional)
Run PagePool Changer.exe
Select your ROM -- /RUU/RUU_signed.nbh
The default is 6 MB
The Titan has limited RAM so it isn't recommended to go beyond 8 MB
go smaller if you want more RAM free
Hit 'Close' when ready.
Flash your custom ROM.
IV. Flashing via the microSD card
With a card reader on your PC, format a microSD card into FAT32
From the kitchen's RUU directory, copy the ROM (RUU_signed.nbh) to the root of the microSD
Rename the ROM to TITAIMG.nbh
Insert your card.
Force into the boot loader with POWER-CAMERA-RESET
Follow the instructions and you'll quickly flash your Titan...
This will work to flash with an official ROM and radio, I think regardless of the boot loader you have installed. But ensure that you have the correct boot loader (olipro 2.40 for this ROM) installed for when you do eventually finish with your flashing and are ready to boot into the OS.
Can a mod sticky this?
If I missed anything at all, post the question and I'll modify the list to include that step.
Cheers on writing up a guide...but there are a few unnecessary steps in there...
First, there is no need to force the phone back into the bootloader after running the sprint update. Just let the phone boot up normally, wait for the tap the screen setup, and run the kitchen or RUU of your choosing. This will AUTOMATICALLY put the phone back into the bootloader and immediately begin to flash. There is no need to uncheck the usb setting in WMDC or activesync either.

Always helpful info. I just read on the forums how a few people did recommend doing that, and it always worked. Either way.
Plus, it can be much safer to get people familiar and accustomed to flashing via the microSD card way.
Knowing what an *.nbh file is and how to flash your device upon your own and without an extra utility are huge fundamentals to decreasing clls for help.
Most of the repeated troubled posts involve errors with the USB connection, installer utilities, unfamiliarity with a notable multi-coloured screen, switching between different boot loaders, etc... Here's a cut'n paste example from my kitchen's thread:

Excellent stuff. I think it would be nice to have a centralized thread for installations.
they should also get their unlock code, msid, and msn and any other account/phone info before updating to a gps/rev. a radio as some people have lost it during the transition. they can view their info using ##778# on sprint phones ans they can use getspc to get their unlock code from their esn hex.

Aww, but that's just taking contingency preparedness too far......
Figures, I make a knowledgeable guide, and there are what.. at least 10 or 20 threads that keep asking the same quesitons over and over. Go figure.
Ironically I've never disabled the USB setting in Vista's (running 32-bit Ultimate) Sync Center and flashing still works fine.

Fantastic guide. EvilDeadFan this is what i have been looking for. Especially with you being on Telus as i am. I have a couple small questions though. I have been reading for a couple weeks off and on and my issue is that most info is Sprint or Verizon specific so im left flapping on many of those carrier specific steps. In step 2 you recomend as pointed out by elgreek84 to backup the carrier required information. Now i know ##778# doesnt work on my phone but ##775# does and even when i get into the EPST it seems empty. Is this required on a Telus setup? I would think not as it was not part of your original steps. Is a reprogramming with Telus after its upgrade has completed required? possibly using *22803?
Also in step 3 to install the Olipro 2.40 i understand what to do but what results should i see? Should i soft reset so i can see the SPL that is installed? Sorry anal i know.
I really want to go ahead with this cause i seriously doubt Telus will ever get around to a proper update but im anal with things like this and have to know and be comfortable with every step.
So as a fellow Telus user how do you find DCD 3.0.1? Is it reliable and mostly glitch free? (Read about MMS issues, random reboots, BT issues still)
Also it seems there is a small spell-o on step 7 "I downloaded the Telus once since I'm on Telus." I think once should be one.
Thanks again stellar guide.

you only back this stuff up for safety or just incase you have a brain fart and go past the stylus setup
For us non sprint customers to get the radio or GPS Function we have to flash a rom to our Phone that was made for another carrier and they have different information in there ..... So IF you go past the stylus setup all of sprints information will over write all of our telus info causing our phones to not work as a communications device until we put all that stuff that we copied down in!
So as long as you do not go past the stylus setup you will not need that info!
For TELUS it is just "##778" not "##778#"
You only need to do this if your phone not able to send or receive calls or text MSG's or get a data connection
Great Rom, stable as hell, he has done a wonderful job on this rom. I haven't had any glitches lockups or malfunctions, I get all of my texts, emails, calls, alerts my callers hear me clearly and I hear them clearly.
This rom does what it was made for!
One thing that has not been an issue for me and it could be from some of the other settings in the REG that I’ve been messing with, is I have 3 all different high end model bluetooth ear pieces, all Pair to my phone but do not work!
Hey: EvilDeadFan good work man?/woman?

How is "ULTIMATE INSTALLATION GUIDE" vague?
I agree that there should be more sticky's but this thread is generally commented on all the time, so it should be active when you log in.

The Wiki is the best place for these guides. Each level or revision of this software requires its own installation process described. I have been trying to keep the Wiki updated and invite others to help. That way we can keep the number of "Best" installation guides minimized and focused on the ROMs they pertain to. Maybe we can get the noobs to read it first, too.
The Wiki should be a great resource for all. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox, but DCD made me do it.

You needed to push it.
I just made some small additions for recording EPST data, editing it, and flashing via the microSD method.
queston
ok so I already had the newest sprint update on my phone(6800) and then I downloaded bootloader and loaded it and it was in bootloader screen and then I ran dcds 3.01, everything seems to be working right and running good, is there anything that can be affected by doing it this way? thanks in advance to any input
so doing these upgrades usually doesn't erase all the info in #778 right?
PS thanks for this guide. this is probably the most simple guide i've seen.
Makes it really easy looking. i've flashed my 6700 a few times, but
never had to upgrade the radio and unlock something before...
so I really appreciate this post having simple info with links.
hey all, I will be recieving my p4000 in a week, and I want to know if what I am thinking of doing will actually work, and greatly simplify the upgrade process for my. With my vogue I do all flashing from sd, and I want to do the same with the titan, so here is what I am hoping will work:
1. use dutty's nbh tool to extract radio from sprint update
-I assume it is the 785.nb, can anyone confirm this?
2. use winzip to extract hard-spl-mfg, and inside is olipro-2.40-hard.nb
3. create custom rom using ppckitchens 3.35 selections
4. use dutty's nbh tool to extract .nb's from custom rom
5. use dutty's nbh tool again to package up
-785.nb as radio
-olipro-2.40-hard.nb as spl
-use mainsplash, secondarysplash, and windows.nb from custom rom
Once packaged, will I be able to flash this all in one shot, or does the device have to be unlocked seperately, and then flashed with an nbh without spl?

How is it not?
Pretend you had not idea what was in this thread, and were just looking at the title. "ULTIMATE INSTALLATION GUIDE" What does that tell you? Here's a list of conclusions that can be drawn from that title, off the top of my head and obviously from my own tech background.
1. An installation guide for installing Windows Vista Ultimate.. obviously not likely as this is not an appropriate forum for that... HOWEVER
2. "" "" "" "" with the necessary components needed to properly sync, and be able to perform titan flashes correctly. Makes sense as many, like myself, have had troubles both syncing / getting usb connectivity, and / or being able to perform flashes in Vista.
Vista possiblities end -
3. Okay, its an installation guide.
First off, from my experience and observations in these forums and among the HTC mod communities, applying a new radio, or rom to a phone, is not usually referred to as "installing". Rather, the more prevelant term is "flashing" a new rom, or a new radio.
Secondly, I think it's obvious to anyone, that the topic, does not mention anywhere, as to what is going to be installed in this guide. Big clue to its apparent vagueness, and the easiest one
One could gather from the topic that it could be an installation guide for getting the new bootloader onto your phone.
And / or an installation of a custom rom... called "ultimate"?
Installation guide for installing DCDs kitchen, or perhaps just one of his roms.
"" "" "" the ppcgeeks official titan kitchen, using no2chem 5054 (or 5060)
You getting the picture now ?
It is very vague. And when I mentioned that, it was not a complaint... rather a friendly suggestion that the topic title should be changed to accurately reflect the content of this guide. Thus, helping to attract more users who are needing help with this because they can see by the thread title, that inside is something that could help them out in a big way.
Just trying to get this out there more for those who could use it.

Please help with rooting the G2

I am been searching and searching for a tutorial to root my T-mobile UK hero.
Could someone help with find a straightforward guide as there seem to be soo many diffent methods which is just confusing me a bit.
about my device, Its currently running version 1.5
Rom 1.76.110.6
Also is there any easy/free way to unlock this device?
All help will be greatly appriciated.
I don't even know what a G2 is. but if it's basically a hero with a different case (the only reason I can imagine why it's lumped in with our heros), you should try my following instructions. The worst case is that it won't work in step one (the actual rooting process) in which case you'd have to get help from someone else.
Don's instructions for how to root your hero (yea, I'm Don, dkelley):
- download the one click root apk http://blog.23corner.com/tag/universalandroot/ from the official blog. (newbie points: copy it do your sd card if you didn't download it directly with your phone. checkmark "unknown sources" in settings->applications. install it using a file explorer that you can download from market for free such as "linda file manager".)
- run it, choose root for 1.5/1.6. takes half a minute. worked for me first time, but there isn't any obvious confirmation other than "done" message, so don't expect magical features popping up. It doesn't even install a superuser app or busybox... so you're still borked.... until the next step.
- download the free (old version, crappy features, but functional) superuser app from the market. install it (obviously). now you're just missing busybox. if you know how/want to bother putting it into your current rom, go for it. I didn't so I didn't.
- for sake of app backup, you can't run titanium without busybox (you already have root and superuser though, see post above if it matters that much). I downloaded the free applist tool from market to make a text file on sd card listing my installed apps. stock hero rom can't have too much installed anyway, won't take you THAT long to manually go through list and redownload/reinstall after flashing a new rom.
- install clockwork "rom manager". they say it's in market, I've never seen it. but an apk is floating around the net. it only needs root+SU which you have now. use it to download and flash a recovery rom of your choice. I use clockwork so it's an obvious choice here, but I think you can do amon-ra with this tool also, probably 1.6.x for those who don't care about dalvik wipes working properly.
- do a nandroid backup of your original rom NOW. could be really important... and this 1-click rooter can apparently UNRoot your rom too, so after a nandroid restore it might be the only way to get your phone back to stock. in my case I'm sol that way (hand-made goldcard rooting method, my phone's incapable of going stock ever again using my own skills...)
- newbie points: make sure you have a flashable signed gsm hero rom on your sd card somewhere. Reboot into recovery using "rom manager" or shutdown phone, then start it again but hold power AND home buttons without letting go until 8 to 12 seconds later you're booted into recovery. wipe everything (dalvik, cache, data, ext shouldn't matter yet from a stock rom...). "install zip file" or however they word the "flash rom" process in your recovery.
- reboot and enjoy.
I've got a t-mobile g2 and used the gold card method a while back, so can say that definitely works.
Thanks guys, I have decided to do the gold card and update it to a generic rom. Can i still get an unlock code to work? is there anyway on unlocking it?
I used a goldcard also on my phone months ago. a hero. pain in the butt to get done right... but works great.
this is why I recommended the above steps which are MUCH easier. I followed them (and organized those particular steps) and used them on my wife's hero a couple of days ago. It took me 15 minutes until I was running a new rooted rom on her phone perfectly with recovery installed, nandroid backup/restore, busybox, super user, the whole thing.
I know your phone isn't listed there - but again, downloading and running the apk won't do anything bad. it either works or doesn't, you'd know by now. it might not work but it's WAY faster and easier than a goldcard.
so imho it's worth a try for 30 seconds of your time.
if it says that it successfully roots your phone then just follow the rest of my instructions above to get everything setup how you'll need to.
goldcard works great though too - I just found it a very poorly documented experience. Hopefully it's clearer now.
when I goldcard rooted my phone I found several sets of instructions and they were all different - and not one of them worked on it's own, I had to combine bits and pieces. It was very scary LoL.
Good luck which ever route you take - hope you get a nice froyo rom running soon!
Hboot stuck
Hi I try to flash my G2 to generic RUU I did goldcard with success and I was doing upgrade trought RUU everything works great but then it says RADIO_V2 - FAIL PU.
Now when I try to turn on my G2 I get hboot screen and I can do anything
can somebody help me?
Thank You

The G2 is T-Mobile UK's version of the Hero, and as far as I know they have locked it down so tight that the only way of Rooting it regardless of what ROM it has(1.5, 1.5 update 1, 2.1 e.t.c), has always only been the goldcard method.
You have to use the goldcard method, I tried the other one when I was rooting my G2 and it didn't work.
I used this guide - BTDags guide, can't post a link though.
Google 'Complete Newbie Guide Hero' Its the first link.
I used the Goldcard to root my T-mob G2. I think I used this guide: Jesterz' guide It is a bit of a pain but you only have to do it once.

How to Root/Recover/Flash Soft Bricked Phone. All-In-One Guide.

I remember when I was looking for all this info I had to jump from board to board to board and
experience tons of trial and error when I was successful with my own device then wounded up
bricking my phone or someone elses based on other factors, or OCLF/CWM not working in recovery,
all that fun stuff.
So I decided to design this guide as a way for a person to make one stop at this guide, and
find everything you need with some tips I had to learn the hardway.
First while YES you can root/flash your phone from 2.2 Froyo official Samsung it is more complicated
and you risk a LOT more. I HIGHLY recommend doing a flash BACK to 2.1 update 1 to make your phone
bone stock to the way it was when you first bought it (Or if you bought it with 2.2 the way it was at launch.
Its a MUCH easier process and almost impossible for something to go wrong in the process. These
steps will help if you have also bricked your phone (Kinda bricked anyways)or its stuck in a bootloop.
Also while rooting is great to apply some Lag Fixes and such there really is no point unless
your going to flash a new ROM (or OS if you're new to this) because you probably don't use your
phone to utilize any of this stuff anyways.
Before you start please be sure to have the drivers working for your phone on your PC.
If you are running Windows 7/Vista and User Account Control (UAC) is enabled, be sure
to right click the Odin icon and select Run as Administrator.
DISCLAIMER:This is my contribution to the wonderful android community here that has given me
a wealth of information on this subject, and had it not been for these boards and others like
it I would not be able to enjoy my phone and the contributions made here by so many hardworking
people. With that said. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU DAMAGING YOUR PHONE.
1.Back up everything in either Titanium backup or to PC (PC backup can only save Pictures etc.
not your message logs/call logs/account settings/etc.) A Nandroid backup should work equally as
well.
2.Shut Down phone into Download Mode so Odin can recognize phone.
-If phone is in boot loop or bricked:
-Plug USB cable into PC
-Take out battery
-Put battery back in
-Hold Vol Up + Vol Down buttons at same time
-While holding inster USB cable into phone
-Odin should now recognize device in download mode
3.Load Files into proper fields. (.TAR into TAR,.PIT into PIT)
4.Do not check any other boxes then defaults. You only want the PIT file and .TAR files for this.
5.Click Start.
6.Phone should begin flash process
NOTE: EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE AT THIS POINT WILL BE ERASED! KERNEL, BASEBAND, ROOT, ETC.
YOUR PHONE WILL BECOME COMPLETELY STOCK AS THOUGH IT WAS JUST PULLED FROM THE SHELF
IN THE UNITED STATES.
7.If process completes the phone will reboot on its own. If it gets stuck in any one process
without moving, just close the program, and repeat steps. Might take a few tries.
Once stock OS of 2.1 Update 1 is applied you can install the update.zip on the SD.
NOTE:YOU DO NOT EXTRACT THE .zip! JUST SIMPLY PLACE IT ONTO THE INTERNAL SD IN NO FOLDER.
If you're running 2.2 froyo and you were just flashed back to 2.1, then you should already have
an update.zip. Thats fine, delete the old one and replace the new one.
1.Now that the update.zip is on your phone the rest is really is. You can root your phone using
this file from your phone. Go into recovery by holding the Vol Up+Vol Down+Power button at the
same time while the phone is off. Let go once the Vibrant logo appears.
2.Select reinstall packages. Phone should reboot and you are now rooted!
If from here you want to flash a ROM over your current OS its simple.
1.When the phone reboots and you see you have SuperUse permissions you are rooted.
2.Go to the market and download ROM manager.
3.Select Install ClockWork Recovery Mod for your specific phone within the ROM manager app.
Find your ROM, Drop it into your SD the same way as the update.zip
4.Shut down your phone and boot back into Recovery Console.
5.Select Reinstall Packages again. This should Install ClockWork (CWM) OVER your recovery console.
If it doesnt take the first time just do it again, it will take you to a different color
console.
6.Once in CWM select the item using the Vol Up or Down buttons and power to select on Install
Zip from SD card.
7.Then pick Choose/Select .zip to Install.
8.Find your ROM, Select it. Select Yes to install.
9.WHAMMY your device is now installing the ROM and you have a flashed and rooted super android phone
on steroids.
Hope this helped.

I wanted this to help people who are new and scared. lol
The guide that s15274n has is like the bible to this. but I know sometimes that much information can be either overwhelming or confusing to some.
So hopefully this helps out some people!
Thanks for the post man. The more ways to help the better. Mine has a ton more detail, but some may not want / need that much.

And that is EXACTLY what I was hoping to accomplish. Sadly though I didn't stumble across your thread last night when I had soft bricked my brothers phone and was doing a million google searches to find the work around on his boot loop frenzied phone (Recovery console was even corrupt).
So after what seemed like 1000 snipits from different articles I was able to mostly compile this. And then throw in some warnings for future rooters/flashers.
Had I known Samsung's own 2.2 release was going to be so AWFUL compared to 2.1 I never would have upgraded. But then again if I probably never would have flashed/rooted. haha. Oh well what can you do.

Noob questions regarding Hasoon2000's All-in-one toolkit and rooting/installing ICS

Before I get bashed for not posting in Hasoon2000's All-in-one toolkit thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1493905), I would just like to say that I just joined the forum and wasn't allowed to post in the thread for questions/problems. With that out of the way, I'll start by saying that I have a HTC Amaze 4G (T-Mobile USA) on android version 2.3.4 and software number 1.36.531.6, not rooted and completely stock.
Background info: The reason why I want to root is because for some odd reason my amaze didn't get receive the OTA ics update. I checked for it manually just about everyday and I also did not receive a notification for a new software update. I also contacted customer service and they were no help. I would just like to root my phone and install ICS for now and later in the future install a stable custom rom that has sense 4.0.
Questons:
1. Does the Amaze have to be connected to the PC before the start of the first step(Install HTC Drivers)? If so, what is the screen on the phone supposed to be on(Is the phone supposed to be turned off or on? Is it supposed to be in disc drive mode? bootloader? etc..)?
2. Which recovery should I use after my bootloader is unlocked? and also what is the phone supposed to be on (bootloader, regular screen, other)?
3. How do I install ICS after successfully rooting?
I apologize for the long post and noob questions. I had an iPhone before getting the htc amaze and jailbreaking/unlocking was very easy whereas this seems to be a bit more tricky. If there is a thorough and detailed STEP-BY-STEP tutorial anywhere else, please let me know.
Thank You!

Thanks for the quick reply! Every time I manually search for the OTA update, it says "There are no updates available for your phone.", so I unfortunately can't update it OTA. I'm very new to all of this, so I don't know the terminology for a lot of the things on the forum. How do I make sure usb debugging is on and also what is a nandroid backup? Also, am I supposed to be on the bootloader screen the entire time?

Okay. Got it. Long story short:
1. Download file onto PC http://www.filefactory.com/f/40bba0821a54f264/
2. Put file on SD card (I recomend different SD card.)
3. After it is on SD card, rename file "PH85IMG" *** No ".zip." ***
4. Power down phone
5. Remove/replace SD card
6. Remove battery
7. Replace battery
8. Power up the phone hold "power button and volume down" at the same time.
9. Hboot will appear...let go of buttons. the phone will then start reading the SD card. "Checking PH85IMG"
10. After that instructions will appear. At the bottom of the info you will see the prompt: "Do you want to start update?" Now Volume up for "Yes."
11. Once you volume up for yes it will begin checking the files. (After some time it updated a few files and the screen went black. I hit the power button and and it started updating all files.
In closing you "WILL" lose all info, contacts, text, email and any other setting on the phone. It will be just like when you pulled it out of the box for the first time."
badgerdave made an excellent post and has it right - almost. I just want to clarify a couple of things.
First...he gave a link to the leaked RUU of the ICS OTA update. This file will install as he described WITHOUT requiring root and results in a phone in out-of-the-box condition - no root, with ICS 4.0:3 and Sense 3.6.
Second...the file must be named 'PH85IMG.zip' - WITH the .zip extension. A common mistake is to have file extensions hidden so when the file is renamed it is actually 'PH85IMG.zip.zip' resulting in installation failure.

yes so first before rooting or unlcoking anything download your carriers ruu but it in you sd card and boot to boootloder (vol down + power button) it will install then use hasoon tool kit to unlock boot loader then flash 4ext recovery then root then flash rom

Crashdamage:can I use the same process to go back to the original stock ROM prior to any OTAs? And here is why I want to do that.
I got my phone in January 2012. I received a message about an OTA. I did the update. My Plantronics Voyager Pro and 2-Explorers came in. I tried them out on the phone and the reception and range were completely horrible. 1-2 Ft. the Explorers had slightly better sound quality.
After some research on t-mo forum I found that there were others with the same problem. (The first Product Review that complains about Bluetooth issue was December 17, 2011. The first OTA was released on December 12, 2012. Coincidence?) Some of the people said their BT worked fine prior to the first OTA. T-mo's corporate line was "ICS will fix everything." I waited for ICS as long as I could and did the "Leaked ICS."
ICS did not fix the problem....but it did improve it from 1-2 Ft. to 8-10 Ft. It still has quite a bit of static. Therefore because ICS did improve the problem, I want to test the theory that everything was fine with the original ROM. Kind of a "test the theory" and "process of elimination."
Any help form you and the community will be greatly appreciated. I hope at the end of this I can take my findings back to the others that are having this same problem...some of them that have done multiple handset exchanges and still have the problem. -THANKS-
My question to you guys is, why root if you want to update to ICS? You do know all the OTA files are available and I wrote a tutorial to update your device manually using them, right?
I want to say it, but I won't, I'm not up for the rants, etc.
badgerdave, if I remember correctly, you're from the tmo community fora, right? You had an issue with your BT and someone posted saying theirs worked great when they rooted their device. You can try a few custom roms, but nobody is definite on your end result until you do it.
Also you guys need to quit using those slow filefactory uploads, devs, RC's, myself included uploaded those files to dev-host accounts for faster, easier downloads, those links can be found in the stock ruu/ota thread, use those and PLEASE READ the dev section, there's updated post and links on the very first threads, I don't get why there's a need to dig up older threads with outdated files/info for something so simple.

Yes DN that is me. But...I'm am not an anomaly where this BT issue is concerned. I have dated it back to the first posted product review
(December 17, 2011) that listed the BT as an issue...others came after. December 17 is 5 days after the first OTA. There are no bad BT reviews prior to that date.
I am not trying to be difficult. I actually downloaded the PDF for the Amaze Bible and installed it onto my rooted HP Touchpad. I read what you are talking about. (Keep in mind that you guy do this stuff all the time with multiple devices. This comes easy to you. Not so much for those of us that get directed to this forum because our questions and problems surpass the T-mo site.)
That being said..I'll just try my hand at using this link: http://d-h.st/8pm to get what I think I need and then try installing it like I did the first "Leaked ICS"
Thanks for your help.

Not that no one believes in you, but think about this for a minute, many contributors, devs and regular users alike here saw the issue many were having, saw how complicated getting things done were, so we put as much time into making this all simple, I'm talking months of work, endless hours of typing and research to simplify things here, so for you to say you're unable to find things here, that kinda hurts, I myself worked on making the ICS update as simple as possible, I've posted multiple times, more than I can count on how to fix soft bricks and how to restore to complete stock, so you can tell how hard it is to believe when people say we're not helpful and we don't make things simple, if you have a question, ask it flat out, I'll be straight with you that I know what you read and did not read, I can tell you exactly where everything can be found for this device and I've been here a mere month or two, you know what? It's pointless, no point in me saying anything anymore, I guess I should just follow suit of every other contributor around here and just move on to another device like they all did/doing.
So have a nice day, if you can find what you're looking for in the amaze bible thread, PM one of the writers, sure they'd be glad to help, they always have been and always will be very nice helpful individuals.
New motto: I am officially out of the amaze forum.

I tried the steps given and everything was going fine until step number 10. I never got a prompt asking to update my phone. Instead it just took me back to the hboot screen with the three androids skating at the bottom with the options: fastboot, recovery, factory reset, clear storage, simlock, image crc. I already had an ICS file downloaded from previous trials to install it, so I didnt use the link you posted, not sure if that matters or not. Anyways, I tried to hit recovery and then a picture of a phone with a red exclamation mark showed up. I then hit the volume up button and power at the same time. Then i went to "apply update from sd card" and then i got an invalid operation and the phone just rebooted normally without applying any update. Any ideas?

First of all before getting to a solution, you need to point out your device info, that way nobody would be guessing, so provide the following and we'll work from there:
hboot version:
software version currently:
s-on or s-off:
bootloader unlocked: yes or no
carrier:
from there solving your problem would be very much more simple.

And what exactly was your result of attempting to manually update via the OTA files? Answer asap, I'll just move you on to the next method of getting it done via the latest leaked file if you can't get it done via the ota file.

Whenever I would manually search for the ICS update OTA, it would just say that my phone was already up to date (even though I am running on GB). Should I try to re-download the T-Mobile OTA file on 4shared that is on your tutorial? And then rename it to "PH85IMG.zip"? If not, please guide me to the next option/step. I really appreciate the help!! :good:

Redownload the ota file from here: http://d-h.st/tdM
Once you download it, place the file on your external sd card, not in any folders, just on the sd card.
Turn your device off
volume down and power on to boot into hboot
select recovery and wait for it to reboot
it should give you a red triangle error, ignore it and press volume up then power button
a recovery menu should pop up, once you see that menu, use the volume buttons to scroll down to the install update from external and hit power to select
it should give you a list of all the files on your sd card, use the volume buttons to highlight the file you downloaded and hit power to select, it should begin updating your device.

Yeah I expected that, seems only s-off users can proceed with that method.
This one should work fine though.
Download this file here: http://d-h.st/3VD
rename it PH85IMG and place it on the root of your sd card the same way you did the last file, it has to be named exactly that and in caps
reboot into bootloader, volume up when the file finishes loading, it's gonna install the update and reboot itself, let it boot properly, first boot may take a few minutes.

The file is downloading right now. When I put the ICS file on the microsd card, do I rename it to "PH85IMG" or "PH85IMG.zip"? I'm also assuming that I have to follow the same steps you gave me on my last attempt to install?

just PH85IMG, don't worry about the .zip part, it's already there, just not visible, no do not use the same steps, follow the steps I outlined above when I specified the file and what to do with it.

[Q] Prompted daily for same OTA update?

I have a stock rom evo 4g LTE, rooted, with Android 4.0.3 on it.
I forget the root app I used, some one click thingy, I guess my bootloader is unlocked
because I get a boot menu every time I reboot, on that screen that says **TAMPERED**.
Anyway, I ignored the notification icon in my taskbar for OTA updates, for a very long time.
Since the day I bought it over a year ago.
Finally I decided "eh, screw it, why not." ...I'm sure I'll regret that.
I told it to do the OTA update, and it downloaded (I think??) and rebooted.
The icon went away. Seemed to be a done deal.
But once per day since then, my phone rings, and I see a prompt saying
there's an OTA update, and would I like to install it now?
I think it's the same OTA update being prompted repeatdly,
because the filesize is always the same (~42 megs).
What should I do? I can choose install, reboot, and be fine for the rest of the day,
or choose cancel, reboot, and be fine for the rest of the day.
Doesn't seem to matter. But would be nice to fix it for good.
Well, considering that you are about 4-5 OTAs behind the rest of the community, I would say that the notification is probably correct. HOWEVER, of you are not using the stock recovery, then the OTA did not flash. Yes, the phone rebooted, but that's because it is installed entirely through recovery, and the phone has to reboot to get into recovery mode in the first place.
Now, for the more important question at hand....why exactly are you still using ICS? Furthermore, if you are still using ICS, then why are you rooted? As far as I'm concerned, the OTAs are actually necessary updates for the phone. I'm sure that you will love Jelly Bean if you have never used it before.
And please, for the sake of us all who are cringing at the sight of the first sentence....PLEASE UPDATE your phone! If you have a good reason not to, please share.
Hi, thanks for the reply... Maybe they were all different updates after all.
I haven't been prompted to update again since my post.
Maybe I grabbed the 3 or 4 OTA updates that I needed to catch up on.
I do think I'd like Jelly Bean too, seeing some of the features is what prompted me to finally catch up.
Can you explain this part to me? I'm not familiar with this stuff.

Well, I had no compelling reason to upgrade. I still don't really, the phone does what I want,
I just saw some of the features in the next version and thought "huh, that sounds pretty cool".
I'm rooted for all the usual reasons... I want to be able to browse, copy, move, rename files (including system files)
without incident... use nandroid for backups... wifi tether (still can't get that to work actually)... install unapproved apps...
tweak the OS, and so on.
Ok, my friend...let me educate you. Instead of giving you the simplest, fastest solution, I will actually try to answer all of your questions, since you did ask.

To give a very superficial explanation of Jelly Bean, it is everything that ICS does, and more. It just does it smoother. It also brings Google Now, which was – and still is – the selling point of Jelly Bean. The Sense launcher got a few changes, too, but you will have to explore those changes on your own (mainly because I don’t remember them off hand, and this post is beginning to become lengthy).

If the first update didn’t update properly, then the phone is simply downloading and trying to install the same update over and over. When you boot back into Android after a successful update, you will be greeted by a welcome message congratulating you for installing the new version.
If you are rooted, odds are, you are using a custom recovery, such as TWRP or CWM. OTAs are only installed through the stock recovery & a locked bootloader. The stock recovery doesn’t make nandroids, or do anything of the sort. To install the stock recovery, go here:

You can flash install the stock recovery by using fastboot commands from the bootloader (which is the screen that shows the TAMPERED status on the top), or you can use Flash Image GUI. It is a paid app on the Play Store, or you can get it from XDA (the dev let XDA users download it for free…Google it).
Lastly, there are a few things that I suggest that you do. First, obtain S-Off (Google, Google, Google...very simple), so you can install the new firmwares directly, instead of using OTAs. Otherwise, if you accept the OTA, you will lose root, and you will have to root your phone again and again. Installing the firmware, then the new rom is the same as accepting the OTA, then rooting.
Another alternative is to get S-Off, then accept the OTA (after installing the stock recovery). Your bootloader does not need to be locked, and there are recovery zips floating around here that can be installed through the bootloader (therefore, you will not be stuck rooting the phone the hard way, just boot into recovery and flash SuperSU). I highly suggest achieving S-Off.
If you want to jump straight to the latest version (Android 4.3, Sense 5.0) by installing the RUU located somewhere in this forum. I actually suggest that you try Sense 4 with Jelly Bean first, but that is completely up to you. Keep in mind that using the RUU will wipe your internal memory, so back up what needs to be backed up. This doesn’t require you to be rooted, and the state of the bootloader does not matter. It will lock the bootloader, load the stock recovery, and you will lose root. You won’t be able to downgrade without S-Off.
Other Notes:
When using the 4.3 RUU, make sure that Android USB Debugging is enabled.
Bookmarking for later but I wanted to say thanks for the thorough reply!
I can confirm the update never worked, because I never got the confirmation message
and I got prompted again a few hours after I posted.
Are you willing to answer just a few more things?
Based on what I've read, it sounds like this is what I ought to do:
- Back up anything I need to. Just to confirm, updating firmware and flashing a new rom wipes out everything in the phone's internal memory, but not external SDcard? Or both?
Are apps considered "on the cloud" and I can reinstall by just redownloading, without paying again?
Except sideloaded apps? Or will I need to find all those APK files and save them somewhere else?
Is it safe to say they're all in \data\app and \system\app? Or would system\app be unwanted since it's what came with the old phone OS?
- Get my phone into S-OFF status.
- Update firmware (this is a separate process from updating the rom? Where do I get this firmware? Google google google?)
- Install a new ROM (stock or otherwise) which will have these updates built in, so I won't need to regain root.
- Not sure what my bootloader is, maybe TWRP, does it matter? Do the above steps affect it? Should I change it to stock anyway?
- You suggested trying Sense 4 rather than Sense 5 first... any special reason?

As always, I'm open for questions. Not to sound egotistic, but I enjoy sharing my opinion.
Based on what I've read, it sounds like this is what I ought to do:
- Back up anything I need to. Just to confirm, updating firmware and flashing a new rom wipes out everything in the phone's internal memory, but not external SDcard? Or both?
Updating to the 4.3 firmware wipes your internal memory, not your sd card (although, that may be a very unfortunate circumstance, so it should be backed up as well). The other firmware updates do not affect your memory.
Are apps considered "on the cloud" and I can reinstall by just redownloading, without paying again?
Technically, yes they are "on the cloud." The fact that you paid is saved somewhere within your main Google account that you downloaded the app with. It is possible to pay for apps with your secondary gmail account, which can be switched within the Play Store app.
Except sideloaded apps? Or will I need to find all those APK files and save them somewhere else?
Use Titanium Backup if you can't find the apks. I do save my apks that I download, and I also upload them to Google Drive, since I have multiple Android devices, and I also have a faulty micro sd card that I am yet to replace. I can lose my data at any given moment, but everything is backed up, so I'm not worried.
Is it safe to say they're all in \data\app and \system\app? Or would system\app be unwanted since it's what came with the old phone OS?
Everything within the /system folder is wiped when you flash new roms. That data is NOT backed up while flashing between roms. Also, since it is from an older Android version, it's best to leave them alone. You may back up the data if you like, but I would refrain from restoring the apks along with the data.
The /data directory may be wiped, depending on the dev who built the rom zip. If they added the superwipe script, then /data will be wiped as well. Most devs do not include this, since many people "dirty flash," which is flashing new roms or updates of the current rom without wiping /data first.
- Get my phone into S-OFF status.
You will save yourself a LOT of headaches in the future. It was my S-Off status that allowed me to reflash my firmware when I lost the function of my data/voice antennas while carelessly flashing a port of a phone on a different carrier. Also, if you feel curious to try AOSP roms, then you do not need to do any extra steps to flash them.
- Update firmware (this is a separate process from updating the rom? Where do I get this firmware? Google google google?)
Yes, the firmware handles manages how the hardware of the phone operates. Updating the rom changes how the software looks and behaves. The kernel is sort of a bridge between the firmware and the software, since it manages the firmware (like battery life, processor speed, antennas, etc.), but the kernel is dependent on the software version. The firmware is not dependent on the software version, just as the software version is not dependent on the firmware version.
The only exception of the firmware/software independence is the 4.3 update, which requires a complete update of the firmware, and the older software cannot run on the new firmware without being modded by a dev.
- Install a new ROM (stock or otherwise) which will have these updates built in, so I won't need to regain root.
- Not sure what my bootloader is, maybe TWRP, does it matter? Do the above steps affect it? Should I change it to stock anyway?
Your bootloader is the white screen that shows the TAMPERED status on the top, and little Androids on skateboards on the bottom. With the exception of the firmware information in the top left corner, this screen does not change...ever.
TWRP is your recovery image, which is accessible through the RECOVERY option in your bootloader, or you can boot directly into it through different apps in Android - Titanium Backup is one of them (yes, that's one of the options, even for the free version).
The only reason to return your recovery to stock is to accept OTAs, and also to bring your phone back to the complete factory settings, just as the day when it was first purchased (for the sake of selling the phone, or returning back to Sprint for service}. Otherwise, don't bother with it. You may want to update your version of TWRP, though. If you update to 4.3, you will have to update it. I'm not going to take the time to get into that right now. I've given you enough homework.
- You suggested trying Sense 4 rather than Sense 5 first... any special reason?
I am a very patient person. To me, exploring Android takes time. I enjoy reading before I test, and testing before I settle (which I'm yet to "settle"). All of that being said, I suggested Sense 4 before Sense 5 because I wanted you to experience the both of them. They are truly two different versions of Sense, which one might not realize, as their version numbers are differentiated by one integer (in other words, 4 to 5). Sense 3 was a small step above Sense 2, and Sense 4 was a bigger step from Sense 3. Sense 5 is a complete overhaul of the Sense UI, save the flip clock.
I just feel that skipping from 4.0 to 4.3 is missing out on a great experience, but that is mainly if you actually want to try out different roms. Until the Sense 5 RUU, I still visiting ICS on occassion, but I usually didn't last more than 3 hours before I jumped back to JB.

Whew...you're making me work. But I like it. Anymore questions? Feel free to ask.
OK I've been working on this all afternoon and I'm at an impasse.
You've been a huge help so far and I hope you can guide me through this part.
I want to S-OFF and am following a tutorial: http://www.thefortressofnerditude.com/s-off-your-sprint-htc-evo-4g-lte/
Step 3 says root and install recovery. So I decide I need TWRP.
Already have nandroid and titanium backups both completed.
And I copied the whole SDcard to my computer after.
Annoyingly, TWRP's install page suggests that I need to be in S-OFF.
TWRP says I need S-OFF. S-OFF guide seems to suggest I need TWRP working.
I installed "TWRP Manager". Realize that might not be the same thing as TWRP.
Googled and found it on the TeamWin page.
The page asks first to input my device. I choose Evo 4G LTE (Jewel).
That brings me to this page: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/98
They suggest I do the android app install method. I follow the first link (Market Link)
and install GooManager, and follow their steps.
Install the app and open it. Tap menu then hit Install OpenRecoveryScript. Tap Yes. Verify that the filename displays your device's code name and hit Yes. The file will download and your device will reboot and install the recovery automatically.
This all goes smoothly, but here's my issue.
It doesn't reboot automatically, or install anything automatically.
I see in the comments a recommendation to reboot into recovery mode.
I choose that in GooManager's menu, and after rebooting I get my bootloader screen with 4 menu options:
Bootloader
Reboot
Reboot Bootloader
Power Down
The only one that sounds sensible to me is bootloader so I pick that.
Now I get some new options:
Fastboot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Clear Storage
Simlock
Image CRC
Show Barcode
So, the only one that makes sense is Recovery. I choose it. The phone reboots.
Now I'm back at the first menu. So I'm in a loop.
Nothing I do in this loop seems to install anything.
So I just rebooted the phone normally and I'm back to my OS.
Where to go from here?

Did you unlock your boot loader first? You don't need to be S-off to install a custom recovery. Unlock your bootloader at htcdev.com then install twrp.
Read here for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420916
Also, I suggest learning how to use fastboot commands. Install twrp using fastboot.
Sent from my EVO using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
OK, so I'm semi-bricked but not panicking yet.
Here's where I'm at.
• Unlocked boot loader successfully
• Installed TWRP using fastboot.
• Followed instructions as closely as I could on moonshine.io to get S-OFF working.
Several times during the process I got "installing device driver software" in my win7 system tray.
Not sure if that's normal. But the drivers seemed to install fine. At first.
But then, during this part of the process:
Moonshining .................(1)
Windows prompted me that it was installing some drivers again, But it failed to install the MTP driver.
After ten tries with the "Moonshining" step, I got "ERROR: don't drink and moonshine!" or something like that.
So, it seems like I need to get this MTP driver going. First I tried solutions on the computer:
• Uninstalled all HTC software, unplugged phone, rebooted,
installed HTC Sync Manager (setup name setup_3.0.52.0_htc.exe), then uninstalled it...
because a tutorial said this would keep the drivers but remove the software. Still no luck on the MTP driver though.
• Found "Mass Storage Device" (my phone) under device manager, removed it, unplugged, rebooted, replugged.
• Plugged cord into back of PC, so I'm using USB 2.0 rather than USB 3.0.
• One suggestion said a certain registry section might have an upperfilter key that shouldn't be there.
But I don't have that upperfilter key so that's not the issue.
Some fixes require getting into my phone (one guy suggests turning off USB debugging)...
but I no longer have a working OS. I can get into my bootloader, I tried Factory Reset.
But after choosing this I go into TWRP and I have no TWRP backups that I can restore.
So my next guess is, I need to get a recovery ZIP (is that basically a ROM?) that TWRP can install.
If that's correct, what ZIP should I get? I was on Android 4.0.3 Sense 4.0, can I download jellybean with Sense 5.0,
and install it via TWRP?
That was my goal all along, but I'm determined to get S-OFF working, so if doing that means my phone gets wiped again,
I guess I just want whatever ROM/recovery/whatever that allows me to change this USB debugging setting,
and try other phone-related fixes to the MTP driver issue.
First of all, flash an ICS rom. I'm assuming that you are still using the same ICS firmware, and you will want to have your phone operational (to enable USB debugging). The link for MeanRom ICS still works. http://old.androidfilehost.com/main/EVO_3D_Developers/mikeyxda/LTEvo/MeanROM-ICS-v65-jewel-ltevo.zip
Ok....since you are on the old HBoot, I think that you need to use the older S-Off methods (LazyPanda or DirtyRacun), if I'm not mistaken. You can not download and flash Sense 5.0 through TWRP as of yet, because you need to be using the new firmware to do so. You may want to pay http://unlimited.io/jewel.htm a visit. Also, to use LazyPanda or DirtyRacun, you need to be using Ubuntu. Another option that you have is to use the regular RUU and update directly to Sense 5.0. You will be stock, unrooted, but you can easily use the latest S-Off method.
Lastly, for your rooting/S-Off needs, you can also use a handy-dandy toolkit from @WindyCityRockr that can handle everything that you need to do. I usually encourage manual labor, but there are some exceptions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2436217
Thanks again for jumping in.
I'm getting somewhere, but still so many difficulties.
Fix one thing, break two more.
I finally have a new working rom, but almost against my will it ended up
being CyanogenMod.
The short version:
- unlocked bootloader, got TWRP going, finally got ADB working (don't think it's the right driver,
but whatever, ADB commands work fine), wiped everything... factory reset, Dalvik, external storage.
- Didn't wipe Internal storage, I wiped only /data/ per some post's recommendation.
- I used ADB PUSH to get a few possible roms onto /sdcard/
PJ75IMG_1.13.651.1.zip (failed with "unable to open zip")
(ROM)_Stock_Rooted_OTA_(3.16.651.3)V2.zip (failed with "unable to execute updater binary in zip")
cm-10.2.0-jewel.zip (cyanogenmod) - success!
So, the phone works. It appears to be at least based on android 4.3... and I'm guessing CM, which updates
frequently, has all those OTA updates bundled into it. Any downsides to CyanogenMod?
I could just proceed from here to reinstall my old apps etc.
I'm still not "S-OFF" which annoys me, but I read a post suggesting it's not really that necessary.
The way they put it is, s-off allows you to access partitions so they can be modded,
but nobody is developing anything interesting for those partitions. Like nobody's doing custom radios and such.
Should I still pursue S-OFF anyway?
If so, is there a way to do it with CyanogenMod?
That awesome app (Windroid Universal Toolkit) doesn't recognize the phone.
Last question, how should I go about restoring everything?
I had titanium and nandroid backups copied to my computer.
Can it restore to such a wildly different version of the OS?
Can I get back not just apps, but stuff like my keyboard preferences, texting history, etc.?

Yes! Being S-On is a complete pain in the BUTT when switching AOSP roms. Have you tried to flash the rom that I posted, MeanRom ICS? I'm really trying to get you to stay on Sense, because S-Off and other different tools work so much better while using Sense. AOSP is better after S-Off. But that's up to you.

I am not sure. You can try if you have the time. I suggest making a nandroid of your CM rom, and try to flash a Sense ICS rom, not JB...yet.

CM might be the issue here, as well as it might not.

Yes, TB will still work. There are some apps that might cause the restoration process to freeze, so I suggest killing TB and skipping over the app that froze the process when you return.

If your keyboard preferences was not backed up, then no. If you were using the stock Sense keyboard, then that is a no as well. As long as your texting history was backed up, it can be restored. Texts are not like apps...their data is typically stored in XML files which are readable through any version of Android (2.3+).
I'm still soliciting my help if you need it.
I'm for sure going to need it, so thanks very much for the ongoing support!
I got discouraged after all the failures but I'll download Meanrom now.
The thing is... now that Cyanogen mod works, I hesitate to wipe it and try a new one.
Especially since several other roms I tried mysteriously failed to install.
I like that it's jellybean and don't wanna move backwards to ICS.
And I like their goal of cutting out the fluff.
I still want S-OFF, will I end up having to wipe everything again to get it?
Also, I really don't feel confident I have the right drivers for my windows machine.
I can transfer files in USB mode, go into USB debugging, and do the usual ADB commands.
But the phone shows up as a nexus in device manager, but it's definitely evo 4G lte.
I tried installing an executable RUU and it failed after a bit saying it can't detect the device.
And there's that issue where Windroid doesn't detect it.
So I have the feeling that without the right USB drivers, tools like Moonshine will still fail.
I specifically got errors every time when anything tried to install MTP usb drivers. Do I really need them?
You think LazyPanda or DirtyRacun's tools will work even if I never get the MTP thing installed?

Feel free to try the facepalm S-off method as well. Works on devices with older software and is super easy. Look here:

Cheers, it does look pretty straightforward.
Of course that's what I thought hours ago when I tried moonshine haha.
I'll give it a go.
To be clear, does this method wipe anything?
They don't actually say.

Can't remember if it wipes or not. Best thing to do is make a backup with TWRP and keep the backup on your external SD card. If it wipes you can always restore your backup.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I am currently really enjoying Cyanogenmod. I suspect it's eating battery more,
but then against I am on the phone for hours redoing everything that got changed/removed.
Does anyone know if there's a simple way (or even a difficult way) to restore my texts?
Because the app is totally different, and the old text app was the one that came
with the stock rom, I cannot restore it in titanium. But if I could extract even the raw text that'd be helpful.
Get back to Sense, or get someone with Sense to restore it for you, and save it using a different app. Or maybe try using SMS Backup & Restore from the Play Store. I'm not sure if it can read the backups saved through Sense, but it's worth a try. You just have to navigate to the location of the old backup.
It looks like I can import an XML in this messaging app so maybe if sense offers an export to XML option, I'll be set.
Sense is sort of an OS on top of the OS, right?
Can sense be loaded without flashing a new rom? or is it too integrated with the OS?
