If you don't mind using another app, Handcent SMS lets you keep the screen off when a message is received.
That app has bad reviews... anyone know if chompSMS has this feature?
My screen doesn't turn on when I get a text, I thought that was the norm!?

Go SMS Pro also has an option for turning the screen on when message arrives.

4,5 Stars for 450 000 Downloads it's not that bad ??
I use the App over more than 15 Months and never had a problem with it. Try it out :fingers-crossed:
Personally I think Hancent is the best especially for the speaking text feature but you could try to turn off the preview feature in message settings not sure if it will work but worth a try

Before I pull the trigger and buy one of these, I'd like your thoughts on which is better, or simply why you like the app you're using now.
Thanks!

Ah you're right, I dont know why I was sure they werent. I will test them out!
Imho go sms is better u can try both and its free
I prefer Go even though both are great sms apps and they are free too.
My fav is Handcent for Black list management, notification and long sms sending options. But both are free ;-)
I like GO SMS because i can back up my SMSes and it doesnt require a paid account for you to do so. The only thing you need to pay for are the custom themes which you can live without.
Yep I settled on Go SMS, it has the better interface imo. Thanks.
My vote also goes to GO SMS
GO SMS here too. My ONLY wishes is that there was a decent theme for my SII AND that the new text popup didn't appear on the lock screen ...
Hello everyone,
Is there any way to see the popup before unlocking but without the screen going on? In other words, I do not want the lockscreen to be on after I send my SMS reply. Just a black screen. I have tried Go SMS and Handscent.
Thanks

What? You mean like the notifications going on the lock screen without lighting up the screen?

What I mean is, after my popup comes up and I send my reply, the lockscreen is there. Is there a way not to light up the lockscreen?
I believe chomp sms has something close to this with some configuration.

But the thing with SMS popup is that it gives you multiple popups of the same message
If anyone is still looking for a reliable popup app...try Glowfly. I know its a weird name but trust me its a good app. So far...no multiple popups and better than SMS popup

Stock SMS has always done that. Are you sure you are going to the messaging app and not contacts app? I can assure you what you want is a stock feature on Liquid and all CM/AOSP roms. If not factory reset and reinstall...or wait for slim to come out later today.

There is alot of options for main list..and dozens of options for different looks for conversation threads..you can choose from android to iphone little popuos in the text..or a simple text feel..handcent can suit basically anyone needs as long as you soend the time tweaking it out...it becomes awesome..just remember to backup the app using titanium backup...so when you change roms..your settings are still there. I hate if I had to change all my fonts and font colors I made..lol

If i'm texting my iphone friends in group text i can send one singke text. If i try to send a second without exiting the program then it sends a blank text to them all. I also have alot of texts that take forever to send. Stock messaging app is great for single texts to an iphone user or if i want to send four of the same text to my friend individually.

Anyway to make my phone not wake up when I receive a text? I can't find it in the settings or anything. Im also on Jelly Beans.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
this was the same way on the s3, as well as the note, not sure about other samsung devices. but the answer is no. they made it like an iphone, it will wake up no matter what unless you custom rom it with CM or something pure google like.
Ah, really? Well that sucks lol. Oh well, it's not a guge deal or anything.

There has to be a setting somewhere in the code that wakes the screen up for these texts. Has to be. It doesn't just do it because it does it.
Someone will find it, and make it bend to their will. Just give it time.

I'm not trolling. I just thought it funny that you stated the obvious, that it is controlled by coding. Any application function is controlled by code
No ill will intended.

I decompiled it earlier to look at.
There is no bools.xml so its going to be in a method.
I'll know more once I locate it.
The method that ive been using is this:
Disable sms notification on the native app
Install sms popup
Uncheck the popup when recieved option on sms popup
Configure the rest of the settings
(500ms for light, 5000ms for off time)
???
Profit.

The solution I found that worked for me was to disable all the notifications in the stock messaging app and have light flow control the sound and led notification. I've had light flow on my other Samsung phones and it's proved to be a great investment. Now whenever I get a text i get my sound and my led lights up red and stays on. much better on battery.

A big reason I want it to not pop up, cause I feel that's why my light flow isn't working cause I have it set so screen on makes the notification go away. I don't always want to have to open the app, but want the light gone.

I too use this method of preventing screen flash on text. A little bit of screen time adds up when you are trying to milk your battery for all its got. Not much a huge deal on this phone though

I can confirm this works on my Verizon note 2 stock root.
I just simple replaced the secmms.apk all rebooted and when I get a text my screen doesn't turn on and I still get the notification light
I'm not even sure if it's possible, but I'd like something like that. I know GoSMS has pop-up notifications, but they're too damn intrusive.
I just want to be able to pull down the notifications tray, tap “reply,” and have a window pop-up.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I would recommend slide messaging .
I would love if we could get this. This is one of the only requests I have that would make stuff better than we already have it. I have an aosp messaging app that someone posted a while back but it is kind of buggy sometimes and it lacks some features that newer ones have.

Meh. It didn't work for me. Plus, it's über buggy. Glowfly let's you use any messenger. It just affects the notification drawer. Plus, its popup windows are better, in my opinion.
I always have problems with these third party sms apps, the notifications are always messed up, lightflow doesn't work right, I get the same messages twice a lot, and the list can go on.
.......I just want an AOSP rom so I can be done with these stupid problems, sense is going to be the death of HTC.
For sure, dude. I need me some Paranoid Android lovin' up in heeyah. Tablet apps in 1080p? Yes, please.
