Newbie Help Needed (New to X10's) - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

(Sorry for the double post, I don't think where I posted previously was correct and I think it got zero reads!)
So, I was given this AT&T branded X10a to use to help out a family member, I am not sure how long it has been out of service (maybe a year or so)
So far what I have done:
Used PC companion to return to stock
Obtained SIM unlock from AT&T (used defunct Verizon SIM to get prompt and entered code, appears to have worked)
Installed Flashtool and can recognize phone
Installed S1 Tool and verified connectivity
Currently s1tool returns

Firmware : 2.1-update1
Baseband : 2.1.65
Kernel : [email protected]#1
So, my questions are more on what should I attack first! Not sure if I should:
Root -> BL Unlock -> Debrand to some generic from Flashtool
Debrand -> Root -> BL Unlock
Root -> BL Unlock -> Custom ROM
I am just a little confused on what direction I should head first with the rest of this. I was looking at the FeraLab New Gen ROM and it said that you needed Baseband of 2.1.71 as a requirement.
Seems like there are a couple of choices for root (flashtool and superoneclick) and a couple for recovery (Xrecovery and the two in flashtool). Just trying to decide what is best. As above I don't know if I should Root now before updating or update to one of the generic 2.3 roms then root... decisions decisions.
Thanks for any and all help.. I have been doing some searching just think I am overwhelmed with information starting on this phone. (my EVO and EVO Shifts were pretty straightforward I thought, this phone just seems to have a different way of doing things)

1) upgrading to 2.3.3. upgrading will upgrade your baseband to .71 so you can install custom roms easily: many ways to do it.
[a] officially using pc companion or SEUS. you can download them using google. pretty straightforward to use.
using flashtool. Download 2.3.3 firmware from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749426
unzip the file to get an ftf file and flash through flashtool.Use this guide on how to flash via flashtool:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19685019
2) You should root your phone(flashtool will be easier as you have already installed it) and follow this guide to unlock your bootloader : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19685019#post19685019
3) after you unlock you need to flash the kernel via flashtool.
two types of kernels
[a] stock based kernel for stock based roms: doomkernel v6,th kernel etc (its your choice).
doomkernel comes with both xrecovery and cwm preinstalled.
xrecovery- install stock based roms
cwm-install cm based roms
but you should check what recovery to use in rom thread
cm based kernels- for cyanogen(cm) roms. eg fxp kernel, kCernel etc.
check the rom thread what kernel to use.
choose your rom, and install recommended kernel via flashtool and install rom through recommended revovery
EDIT: next time ask questions in Q & A section

Thanks exactly what I needed, especially being so far behind in what has happened over time, starting late on phones is always fun! Yeah, the title and rules for other thread it seemed right, but obviously wasn't, then I went general and now moved to Q&A. So I guess I got two lessons out of this!
Again, thanks (meter updated!)

[Q] what is 2.1.1.A.0.6 or 2.1.1.C.0.0 SE firmware

i was trying to installe android 2.3.5 but i found its post the i cant unless i have
Only 2.1.1.A.0.6 or 2.1.1.C.0.0 SE firmware is that the orignal Rom the device came with ?
If you go into 'settings' then 'about phone' you will see the phones baseband version. If it ends in 15 it is most likely one of the two firmwares you mention. If you try to install a rom dependant on these firmwares and you don't have it you will temporarily brick your phone. (Requiring the use of the Sony Ericcson Update Service to hopefully restore the phone to working order).
It is possible your phone has the firmware already installed but you need to check! Some network providers have been very slow at releasing them. If you manage to find the firmware on the web (make sure it is the correct language and layout for your locale - AND the correct phone) then you need to use a flashing utility to install it, I use 'flashtool' as it can root the phone and install xrecovery, but you must be sure you read the documentation and follow the proceedure.
Once you have xrecovery and the phone is rooted the magic can begin..
Be careful. Its very easy to render your phone bricked (as in the phone is as useful as a brick!). No one here can take responsibility for the advice given or your actions.

my phone android version 2.2.1
baseband version M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015
KERNAL VERSION 2.6.29 [email protected]#1
MOD VERSION FROYO MINICM/CMV6 HYBRID BY SLADE87 AND OWAIN 94
BUILD NUMBER V5.01 FINAL RELEASE
SO CAN I INSTALL SONYBREAD WHICH requires 2.1.1.A.0.6 or 2.1.1.C.0.0 SE firmware
so do i have it????
Not anymore, but if you do Factory reset, yes you have
no it will not cuz the factory ROM is not exsist
In my understanding the firmware doesn't change when you install a custom rom and (to me) they are two different entities. So yes, in my view you should be able to flash sonybread but I haven't used it myself but I have other gingerbread ports without a problem
Once your on the correct baseband you can change between roms without having to flash via the pc/flashtool.
If you get into bootloops then you can try restoring an xrecovery/cwm recovery or failing that reflashing with seus/flashtool.

[Q]Is my current firmware 2.1.1.A.0.6 or 2.1.1.C.0.0 or other?

I'm trying to up my firmware to GingerDX (follow guide of stelios97), but he wrote
You must have se new firmware 2.1.1.A.0.6 or 2.1.1.C.0.0 to flash this ROM!

I dont know how to know exactly which my firmware is. In "about phone" only write "Firmware version 2.1-update 1"
I searched in 4rum and read that if my baseband version ends in 15, my firmware is one of these two firmwares. But my baseband version ends in 06, does it mean my firmware is not 2.1.1.A.0.6 or 2.1.1.C.0.0? So how can I know exactly what is it?
These my phone's info:
Model number: E10i
Firmware version: 2.1-update 1
Baseband version: M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404006
Kernel version: 2.6.29 [email protected]#1

One more question:
How can I know my Kernel is nAa 08 Kernel or what Kernel (I dont know what 2.6.29 [email protected]#1 means)? In stelios97's guide wrote that I have to flash nAa 08 Kernel.

the firmware is your build number, so you need to update it to proceed. The baseband is correct (ends in 06). If you are in stock rom, your kernel is stock too (to flash a new kernel there are other steps to do before). I hope this get useful for you, and as an advice, read a lot about android!

Thx for replying
But my build number is 2.0.A.0.504, so my current firmware is 2.0 or 2.1?
And now If I want to update to 2.1.1.A.0.6 by SE update service, I have to relock Bootloader right? (I just Root, xRecovery and unlock Bootloader yesterday). But I read in [Guide] Bootloader and kernel guide | X8 | W8 | X10 mini | X10 mini pro of SpyderX that
If you relock your bootloader while using a custom kernel your phone will be bricked!

So what I have to do to relock Bootloader safely? Flash another Kernel (like nAa 08 Kernel) before relock Bootloader?

You read it in a wrong way xD
Well, to relock your bootloader again, your kernel MUST be in stock, otherwise it will be bricked (it says so, I don't even mind to try it)...
To conclude, if you want to relock your bootloader again after having your stock kernel replaced with another kernel, use flashtool to replace your current kernel to the stock one, or just reflash it using SEUS to make sure. After that, you can relock your bootloader again
Hope that helps

your current firmware is 2.1. If you want to start all over again, you can simply go to the support zone in sony ericsson pc companion, in the update firmware section and "repair" (loosing all your data), and probably you will get the latest update available for our minis. And other option is mentioned by StardustGeass
I didnt use PC Companion (feared be bricked cause I unlocked BL already), I used flashtool to up my firmware to 2.1.1.A.0.6 successfully. In fact that I palpitated abit when flashing, but finally it was ok, my mini now is 2.1.1.A.0.6, all Root, xRecovery are removed and Bootloader is relocked now.
Now I have to start again to up FW to 2.3.7: root, xRecovery, unlock BL again, then flash nAa 08 Kernel be4 intall GingerDX from SD card
Thx for helping
This is my first post: Hi to everyone.
My mini is exactly the same than yuduy, except that mine is E10a. I have not modified anything yet, but I want to use the stelios97 Gingerbread ROM. Here in Mexico, according to PC Companion I am completely updated. So the questions are:
1.- What is the best way to update the firmware to meet the requiered buit number?
2.- How do I know if the phone will continue to work in the Mexican phone company TELCEL if I use a new ROM etc?
Thank you

Yes, many of the ROM's require unlocked bootloader. I can't remember how to check it . If You don't want to do that just find a ROM that doesn't require an unlocked bootlader.
All files that are neded for unlocking bootlader are here.

[Q] Can't update Android Version on my Xperia Mini

Hello There,
I have a little problem here. When I try to update via PC Companion, it tells me that I already have the latest version, but I don't think I do. Truth be told, I already messed up a lot with this phone in the past, but I calmed down, because it got so slow to the point of being unusable, Then I reset to factory, but there must be something wrong left. The info I have in the "About Phone" is:
Model Number: St 15 i
Android Version: 2.3.4
BaseBand Version:8x55A-AAABQOAZM-203028D-56
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-perf
Build Number: 4.0.2.A.0.42
Any hints, please ?
Do a favor to yourself. Unlock your bootloader & install CM 10.1 rom by the master mikeioannina. HERE.

You can connect your device to the PC and through PC Companian make a repair and it will install the stock ROM for your device and everything will be alright.
It did not work
Thanks, but the repair procedure did not work as well, it says there is no software available for my phone, pretty much what the software update procedure did. I guess the problem is bigger, because as I mentioned before, I really messed up with the phone previously, I think there is some kind of version conflict in the device.
Cheers
Flash stock ftf file via flashtool or else tried SUS (sony update service)

Maybe you unlocked your bootloader? That would make any Sony tool useless. I guess the best way to fix it - use flashtool, as mentioned by others
