Need some recommendations for brand new Rezound. - HTC Rezound

Hey guys. I'm excited to be receiving my new Rezound tomorrow. I'd like some advice so I can jump right in!
1) Do I need to flash any leaks or RUUs when I first get it?
2) Is there a guide to unlock and flash ROMS? I did a look and didn't see anything. (Maybe it's not stickied?)
3) I would like some advice on which ROM to flash? Back when I had my old rezound I really like Cleanrom and Business Sense. I see a lot of activity over Viper and Simplicity.

check the dev section, the sticky that says sticky roll up. All the sticky's are in there.

s-off it,then enjoy flashing

Any recommendations on which ROM? I know it's subjective but I'd like to hear what thoughts on which are good picks nowadays.
Edit: Btw, is it okay if I keep it S-On. Getting a wire to do stuff sounds like too much work and I'm not sure it's worth the effort...I'm staying at a friend's so it's not very convenient...

If you are going to NOT S-Off then read everything carefully. Without being S-off, once you do an upgrade you can not go back. Not being s-off just makes everything more difficult. Take the 10 minutes and do it, it is well worth it.
As for Roms, if the new Rezound comes with GB you are limited and will need to do a firmware patch. If your new Rom comes with and I doubt it the new Global update, you can go with most new Roms. I always recommend to first get your feet wet with a CleamRom, it has not been updated in a while but is always rock solid. Also read each of the Rom info carefully as well, some are now only being made for S-off only.

Take the OTA update and use your phone stock for awhile to make sure there are no issues with it. After that use hansoons tool to unlock, root, and flash a custom recovery

FWIW on the ROM front, I recently moved from cleanrom 4.5 (which is no longer being updated) to ICS cubed and am very happy with the results

Getting Rezound Monday... few questions

Hello everyone,
I am getting my rezound Monday and have a few questions, as unlock/root will be first things to do (Not an android newb, but have been away for a while). I have read many threads but haven't found info on these.
1. Using unlockHTC dev will set security to OFF?
2. Can ROMs be flashed via CWM or Amon_RA equally? Or each ROM is different?
3. Best gingerbread bloat reduced ROM?
4. Best kernel?
Thanks! I am sorry if I have missed any of these, but I really did read a lot!!!!

1. HTC's unlock tool will only give you an unlocked bootloader, you will still have S-ON unless you're one of the lucky ones who got a S-OFF device, it's unknown if people are still working on getting full S-OFF.
2. Can be flashed either way but Amon RA seems to be the most complete experience currently, might just be me, but using Amon also helps you gain root easily.
3. Probably CleanROM by Scott, somebody double check me on that, I went straight into ICS.
4. There's only the stock kernel right now basically.
There's ICS kernels with ICS ROMs and GB kernels with GB ROMs, learn the difference or you'll get an error, but no custom kernels yet.
Good luck.
1. No. Rezound does not have s-off.
2. Use Amon Ra. CWM is not recommended as it is buggy on this phone. In fact, the thread for it has reportedly disappeared from the dev forum according to a thread in general forum.
3. Personal choice. Each ROM has different features. I'm loving Ineffabilis, I like the tweaks and there's the RedZound Theme made for this ROM that makes it gorgeous especially when coupled with the Red Beats Skin and the icon pack I'm using.
4. I don't know that much about these but I've been trying out dsb without major issues. I'm still working on the CPU settings and trying to improve battery life. ziggy's kernel seems to have issues with bootlooping. And people seem to like Incredikernel.

There are custom kernels.
ziggy's, dsb, Incredikernel.
1: Answered already.
2: I would recommend AmonRA as everyone else has.
3: Ineffabilis was a pretty good GB ROM. I never had any problems with it.
4: I would recommend IncrediKernel. Never had any problems with it either.

Wow thanks everyone!!!!
I would love to ride ICS, but I do need reliability so I am going to hold out and do gingerbread for now. I got the rezound after having lg spectrum for like a week and seeing no dev support. Got the lg after being with iphone 4s for a few months and that's all I could tolerate!
I will keep reading. There are so many ROMs which is fantastic but just made the step one harder for me.
ICS is very stable and reliable for the Rezound. Lots of us are using it as their daily driver.
Sent from my VTAB1008 using xda premium
yea ICS is def stable enough for Daily use dont worry ... i use it all the time with no problems
Awesome!!!! Which ICS would be nice and stable? I don't mind sense but absolutely hate vzw bloat.
I am going to go thru the ROMs...will look at bug reports and stability. Thank you for the help.
If you use bluetooth audio streaming, stay away from the ICS roms, otherwise they are pretty solid.
I would definitely give SenselessROM 1.1 a try. I've installed all of the ROMs that are currently on the development forum and this one is definitely my favorite. The ICS ROMs are nice, but there are some really small things that bugged me about them. Like the previous posters have said though, they are fully functional and can be used for daily use. I just prefer the look of Senseless. It also only uses around 300MB of RAM.

I'm really liking Senseless-4.0.3-ICS-v1.0.0 by newtoroot. Just read the thread, notably page 40, to make sure you have the correct kernal. I'd also make sure you get the OTA update applied before unlocking and flashing anything.
If you want Sense, Scott's CleanRoms are great, whether the Gingerbread or ICS version.

It improves the radio. Root is easy enough to get back.

As long as HTC keeps their word about wanting all bootloaders unlocked, you shouldn't have to worry about any OTAs breaking your ability to re-root. And if they did. There would most likely be a huge back-lash from the community.

So it updates the radio...perfect. The one I have coming is brand new, but software is probably a few weeks untouched. Will check. Thank you everyone

Today is it..

I will finally be unlocking my rezound once I get home from school .... I'm so nervous I will brick it lol. Can someone suggest a noob friendly Rom to get started that has full functionality..I would like WiFi tether to work in infrastructure mode ..since I'm getting the vita next week. I know this question has been beaten to death but there were a lot of different threads with like different opinions and it would be easier if it is all just in this one thread for me. Thanks
I still have a stock Unrooted Rezound also..Will be watching this thread..so let me know your ups and downs..I might do this as well.

I really would stick to just rooted and debloated stock for now. If you reallly want a custom rom I think Scott's Clean rom's run well or Nil's business sense rom's just make sure you are downloading the Gingerbread versions. Make sure you read the threads to see about tethering since that is something i have never done so never paid attention to what works or doesn't with tethering.
P.S. unlocking is extremely easy, just follow the directions on the HTCdev site precisely and you will not have an issue. Also I would definately suggest sticking with Amon Ra for your recovery seems to have the least trouble right now. Clockwork official is really new to the rezound and I still seem to read threads that people have trouble with backups or restoring backups and sometimes even installing roms using it.
Stick to GB for now.
Read the threads and find out which one suites you best. Everyone has different tastes. Do your homework and you won't have problems.
To answer the question about tethering...the only infrastructure tethering to be found is on an ICS ROM. Unfortunately that's not "noob" friendly.
Yes- definitely read the entire threads of any ROMs you are considering so you will know what to expect as far as bugs and known issues.
Stick with Amon Ra recovery. There's an update coming with a fix if it's not already posted.
GB ROMs have ad-hoc tethering. ICS have infrastructure. But ICS ROMs are not fly functional so again- read entire threads to know what you're getting into.
I really like Ineffabilis GB. I would probably just use it with stock kernel though. I'm not seeing a benefit to using dsb although maybe I just need to play with CPU settings more.
This is my first smartphone and something that's really helped me is keeping a text file with notes on how to do everything so I don't have to search for info again when I need it. Also gathers lots of info from various threads in one place and makes it easier to learn everything. Seems it's quite different on this phone since it is still s-on.

Yeah, and a nervous excitement. I was fortunate that WasabiWa83 offered to stand by in chat in case anything went wrong. And a week or so later when I was reflashing a ROM and the phone gave me an error message in the middle of flashing saying it couldn't read my ext sd card I got stuck on the HTC splash screen and I didn't even panic, just went through the steps I had read about and all was good again.
So as long as you read and learn, once you've gone through everything you get comfortable since you know there's a way out of any trouble you may encounter.
Unlocking is simple and easy. Don't worry about bricking the phone man. I owned an Incredible before my Rezound and installed ROMs, radios, kernels, splash screens, you name it and never had a problem. Once you get the hang of flashing stuff and go through the initial process of botching something up and figuring out how to fix it, it becomes second nature and quite fun. Welcome to the unlocked world!
P.s. Nil's business gingersense and scott's roms are great for beginners. I suggest Nil's if you want a little bit of theming and scott's if you want more basic functionality. Stick with gingerbread for now, although the ICS roms that are out there are good enough to be daily drivers and I did run them for over a month, they do have their little kinks still.
Quit discouraging ICS roms. I haven't been on GB since 2 days after the first leak and aside from bluetooth and the occasional screen flicker, they work fine.
That said, sticking to GB for awhile might be a good idea. There are plenty of people always online here ready to help if you post in the general section. Just make sure to look at stickies and such for help. A good rooting guide written my myself is linked in my signature. It is the most simple of the guides an I have updated it for the newest firmware version.
For me not being unlocked and rooted >>I would say the reason I dont jump right away is not I'm scared or nervous..its the time and effort from going to a fully working phone to a phone that might be buggy to just get just a few perks. Plus not to mention the time it takes to try each ROM out,,gheez that the hard part!!
I personally would do it to get rid of the bloat ware that could be using my battery, What the OP is doing it for? I think the same reason as me. Unless he likes looking forward to the pain like the all of you.

I agree about ICS roms... they are awesome i like them over GB
If you want speed and battery with the stock look mainly, give cleanrom a shot! All the other GBs are themed beautifully and have have a lot of work put into them. I stayed away from ICS because I am OCD on bugs and theme issues such as 4g arrows but it ran very smoothly.

I've told others in various threads but i'll say it here cause it can't be stressed enough. *learn about flashing kernels aka boot.img*.. I would dare to say 70% of the threads in the Dev forum are cluttered with people who never learned about flashing rom kernels with adb or tools like cleanflash that make it easier. The super-noob guide in the dev section is your best friend.
Most folks are used to the kernel being totally packaged in with the rom zip and once you flash the rom zip you're good to go. That is not the case with this phone. Learn about it and save yourself many headaches.
Well I unlocked my phone and I think it's rooted..so I should stick to GB roms? Is ineffabilis good?

Ineffabilis is a GREAT GB Rom but to be honest they're all really good.
I think its good to start off with GB because you may run into usability issues with ICS that may cause issues for you. Flashing a GB will help you get your feet wet!

[Q] Benefits of rooting

The greatest feature of the AOS is that we are able to root our phones thanks to some very helpful people. I’ve temp rooted my Rezound because I am waiting on the official Android 4.0 from Verizon. But we’re in the middle of the 2nd quarter and I’m starting to get impatient. I have the Eris, and I can easily install ROMs on it. I also have the Driod 2 which is a pain to install ROMs. For those who have rooted their phones and place ICS on their phone, are you worried about something going wrong with the phone and not being able to return it? Should I sack up and root it? Or would you recommend that I remain on the sidelines until its safe?
ICS Rom .:. Flash. One. Now.

(We're still in Q1 unitl March 31st! And I'm running an ICS rom, alternating between Ineffabilis-Deus v1.02 and Senseless 4.0.3 v1.0.) Well first off, the official ICS from Verizon looks to be a long ways away, so if you want ICS now, I'd definitely flash an ICS rom. And no, I'm not worried at all about something malfunctioning with my phone and not being able to return it. You can almost always return to stock, so as long as you can do that, you're safe. And besides, most of the Verizon reps have no idea what an unlocked bootloader is/does, let alone know how to check for one. So you should be able to return your beast (Rezound) to Verizon if something goes wrong with it. There's my two cents.
Final Verdict: Flash an ICS rom. Whether it's Senseless or has Sense 3.6, that's up to you.
Hope I helped!
Waiting until probably May or so is not an option especially when we have such nice ROMs coming out now.
I'm running Joel's ICS Sense ROM and it's one of the nicely polished ROMs I've ever used.
I also used the Desense tool to get Nova Launcher so it looks a little bit like ICS and I gotta say, I'm extremely happy where I'm at right now. Go for it.
I say go for it too and I'm not even running ICS yet.
I am waiting for my favorite themes etc to become available for ICS before switching and I'm in no hurry anyway as I absolutely LOVE the ROM I am currently running and don't really care about ICS.
I use a couple nexus phones at work and I see no real advantage whatever to ICS.
If you root your phone it will start to fall apart. All of the ROMs will then steal your personal information and make it difficult to go to the bathroom. Then there's the issue with hand warts that people are getting with these ICS ROMs that have come out.
Do it. Stop questioning it. It's worth it.

Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
No s-off... so roms and kernals can be a bit odd, had an incredible myself, was a good bit easier.
-no more flashing everything simply from recovery
-need to unlock via htcdev.com
-roots fine once unlocked
-when flashing roms, the biggest problem is making sure a boot.img get flashed also, many roms automatically do this via the PHB98.zip (sp?) file which get created when flashing the rom.
-take good care to read the FULL instructions here, as some roms do not include the update file that contains kernal/boot.img
notch more complicated than incredible, but if you can read, and don't jump straight in, its pretty quick and easy to get romming.

Just got back to the forums and need some help with the new ics.

I've been real busy with my EMT training for the past couple of months and just got back on the other day and found out about the new ics update. I did the 1.4 downgrade to get s-off. Is there anything I need to do before flashing one of the new roms floating around. I never did the vm update. and i was running infected eternity with anthrax. Thanx in advance.
Unless the ROM includes the 2.89 kernel, then no. If so, then you have to flash one of the fw/hboot upgrades first.

Yeah times have changed a bit....
BTW the a*****x kernel is no longer supposed to be mentioned on xda. fyi
To answer your question though you can flash any of those roms without upgrading anything.....but if you choose to you can update to the new firmware (minus HBoot) (there's a thread with the modded firmware DON"T EVER FLASH THE VM FIRMWARE though.
But the new sprint firmware is supposed to enhance performance...but I don't see the difference...so try without and if you choose to later, upgrade firmware.

Thanx for the help you guys. Also, I had read the zero tolerance posts all over the place. It would appear that simply stating the facts about what's on your phone won't get you in trouble.
