oh hai guys! - HTC Rezound

Hey guys I come over from the incredible, got my rezound today. I noticed that there are a couple of my fav devs from the dinc here, Joel, newt, and Chad. so I am excited about getting this phone rooted and get to flashing!
So I got a lot of reading ahead, but from what I see so far, no s-off yet?

No, no s-off but we have HTC dev unlock so we can do most things

No s-off... so roms and kernals can be a bit odd, had an incredible myself, was a good bit easier.
-no more flashing everything simply from recovery
-need to unlock via htcdev.com
-roots fine once unlocked
-when flashing roms, the biggest problem is making sure a boot.img get flashed also, many roms automatically do this via the PHB98.zip (sp?) file which get created when flashing the rom.
-take good care to read the FULL instructions here, as some roms do not include the update file that contains kernal/boot.img
notch more complicated than incredible, but if you can read, and don't jump straight in, its pretty quick and easy to get romming.

Sorry noob post.

Hi all, just a quick intro. I am new to the Verizon/ Droid scene. I am picking up the Droid Razr today. I am coming from Sprint with an Evo. I have to say I am nervous about losing sense, but I am excited for how fast the Razr is going to seem. I know that even overclocked, my phone would not be able to hang with the speed of the new phone.
I have read a bit, but just wanted to get a round about for rooting (easiet way), which ROM's seem to be the most popular, kernel options? I noticed as of right now there is no ICS, but are there solid builds being played with right now?
I am sure there is plenty I am missing, but just wanted to say hi.
I appologize about the questions, but very little free time to do a lot of reading thus far.
Thanks in advance
Welcome to XDA.
First off, the RAZR has a locked bootloader. You can't flash kernels, only ROMS. There's a fairly large movement out there to get Moto/VZW to unlock our bootloaders but no results yet.
As for rooting, there are plenty of resources out there for 1-click rooting. So rooting isn't an issue, just make sure you get the right root program for your version.
As for ROMS, DroidTheory has some pretty nice ROMS and most are very stable.
Most of this information is in the forum, you just have to search for it.
Hope this helps!

Yes it does help, thanks. I will be doing plenty of reading for sure. Just a different beast really. Just strange seeing all the different developers on this side. Just because, like I said, came from sprint/HTC land.

That site has been extremely useful for me. I don't know if I am allowed to link so I made that odd thing there.
To demonstrate how useful it is I managed to get stuck on boot, search up a method for unbricking, enact the method, have the most terrified bathroom break of the new year and go back to stock all in under 24 minutes.
Absolutely none of that was an exaggeration.
So it took a bit. But at this time tomorrow I will finally be a Droid owner.

Today is it..

I will finally be unlocking my rezound once I get home from school .... I'm so nervous I will brick it lol. Can someone suggest a noob friendly Rom to get started that has full functionality..I would like WiFi tether to work in infrastructure mode ..since I'm getting the vita next week. I know this question has been beaten to death but there were a lot of different threads with like different opinions and it would be easier if it is all just in this one thread for me. Thanks
I still have a stock Unrooted Rezound also..Will be watching this thread..so let me know your ups and downs..I might do this as well.

I really would stick to just rooted and debloated stock for now. If you reallly want a custom rom I think Scott's Clean rom's run well or Nil's business sense rom's just make sure you are downloading the Gingerbread versions. Make sure you read the threads to see about tethering since that is something i have never done so never paid attention to what works or doesn't with tethering.
P.S. unlocking is extremely easy, just follow the directions on the HTCdev site precisely and you will not have an issue. Also I would definately suggest sticking with Amon Ra for your recovery seems to have the least trouble right now. Clockwork official is really new to the rezound and I still seem to read threads that people have trouble with backups or restoring backups and sometimes even installing roms using it.
Stick to GB for now.
Read the threads and find out which one suites you best. Everyone has different tastes. Do your homework and you won't have problems.
To answer the question about tethering...the only infrastructure tethering to be found is on an ICS ROM. Unfortunately that's not "noob" friendly.
Yes- definitely read the entire threads of any ROMs you are considering so you will know what to expect as far as bugs and known issues.
Stick with Amon Ra recovery. There's an update coming with a fix if it's not already posted.
GB ROMs have ad-hoc tethering. ICS have infrastructure. But ICS ROMs are not fly functional so again- read entire threads to know what you're getting into.
I really like Ineffabilis GB. I would probably just use it with stock kernel though. I'm not seeing a benefit to using dsb although maybe I just need to play with CPU settings more.
This is my first smartphone and something that's really helped me is keeping a text file with notes on how to do everything so I don't have to search for info again when I need it. Also gathers lots of info from various threads in one place and makes it easier to learn everything. Seems it's quite different on this phone since it is still s-on.

Yeah, and a nervous excitement. I was fortunate that WasabiWa83 offered to stand by in chat in case anything went wrong. And a week or so later when I was reflashing a ROM and the phone gave me an error message in the middle of flashing saying it couldn't read my ext sd card I got stuck on the HTC splash screen and I didn't even panic, just went through the steps I had read about and all was good again.
So as long as you read and learn, once you've gone through everything you get comfortable since you know there's a way out of any trouble you may encounter.
Unlocking is simple and easy. Don't worry about bricking the phone man. I owned an Incredible before my Rezound and installed ROMs, radios, kernels, splash screens, you name it and never had a problem. Once you get the hang of flashing stuff and go through the initial process of botching something up and figuring out how to fix it, it becomes second nature and quite fun. Welcome to the unlocked world!
P.s. Nil's business gingersense and scott's roms are great for beginners. I suggest Nil's if you want a little bit of theming and scott's if you want more basic functionality. Stick with gingerbread for now, although the ICS roms that are out there are good enough to be daily drivers and I did run them for over a month, they do have their little kinks still.
Quit discouraging ICS roms. I haven't been on GB since 2 days after the first leak and aside from bluetooth and the occasional screen flicker, they work fine.
That said, sticking to GB for awhile might be a good idea. There are plenty of people always online here ready to help if you post in the general section. Just make sure to look at stickies and such for help. A good rooting guide written my myself is linked in my signature. It is the most simple of the guides an I have updated it for the newest firmware version.
For me not being unlocked and rooted >>I would say the reason I dont jump right away is not I'm scared or nervous..its the time and effort from going to a fully working phone to a phone that might be buggy to just get just a few perks. Plus not to mention the time it takes to try each ROM out,,gheez that the hard part!!
I personally would do it to get rid of the bloat ware that could be using my battery, What the OP is doing it for? I think the same reason as me. Unless he likes looking forward to the pain like the all of you.

I agree about ICS roms... they are awesome i like them over GB
If you want speed and battery with the stock look mainly, give cleanrom a shot! All the other GBs are themed beautifully and have have a lot of work put into them. I stayed away from ICS because I am OCD on bugs and theme issues such as 4g arrows but it ran very smoothly.

I've told others in various threads but i'll say it here cause it can't be stressed enough. *learn about flashing kernels aka boot.img*.. I would dare to say 70% of the threads in the Dev forum are cluttered with people who never learned about flashing rom kernels with adb or tools like cleanflash that make it easier. The super-noob guide in the dev section is your best friend.
Most folks are used to the kernel being totally packaged in with the rom zip and once you flash the rom zip you're good to go. That is not the case with this phone. Learn about it and save yourself many headaches.
Well I unlocked my phone and I think it's rooted..so I should stick to GB roms? Is ineffabilis good?

Ineffabilis is a GREAT GB Rom but to be honest they're all really good.
I think its good to start off with GB because you may run into usability issues with ICS that may cause issues for you. Flashing a GB will help you get your feet wet!

[Q] Where do I start?

So I get one of these bad boys in the mail tomorrow and plan on activating it asap.
Where do I start? (I'm well experienced on the HTC incredible so I'm not a total noob)
1. Is there currently a preferred root method?
2. Is s-off necessary right now?
3. What is a solid starter ROM to get a feel for root with this phone?
4. Kernel's as well
5. Finally, I am happy to see a lot of familiar devs trolling these forums.
Just bought one of these for the gf and am reading reading reading due to her phone having excessive battery drain. I would ask you to check the firmware first just to see if its GB or ICS. If it's GB, then you might wanna wait on upgrading the firmware until things get sorted out, since some of us are having battery life and heating issues on ICS.
But to answer your query:
1. The NilsP stickied thread has all the info on preferred root method depending on if the phone is ICS or GB.
2. While S-Off isn't 100% necessary since a lot of the roms havent been recooked to flash all-in-one, why wouldn't you? You'd be able to switch firmware easier and it's kinda fun to do the wire trick.
3. I think CleanROM DE and RezROM are good starters, but that's subjective. Just give em a look. My chick likes RezROM and she cares not a bit about flashing.
4. There's a few kernels out there for the trying (Ziggy and Incredikernel, + a few), but with S-Off just recently being achieved, you won't see a lot at this moment.
5. Which are they? I came from the DZ/G2, then TMo Galaxy SII, and now Sensation.
Good luck, because your gain may be mine, too.
since its brand new i would used the s-off method... since it wipes your sd card anyways

Guys like Chingy, |||bored|||, JoelZ, Newtoroot, NilsP, a few others.
a lot of these guys did a lot of the deving that was done for the incredible. That forum split in two between the rezound and the gnex but I'm glad I'll be jumping on a phone that seems to have a vested dev community.
Since I lack the skills to create stuff I just play and recommend things.

All the devs on xda rezound have some nice roms, but yes I find myself coming back to Bored's Rezroms as well.

Need some recommendations for brand new Rezound.

Hey guys. I'm excited to be receiving my new Rezound tomorrow. I'd like some advice so I can jump right in!
1) Do I need to flash any leaks or RUUs when I first get it?
2) Is there a guide to unlock and flash ROMS? I did a look and didn't see anything. (Maybe it's not stickied?)
3) I would like some advice on which ROM to flash? Back when I had my old rezound I really like Cleanrom and Business Sense. I see a lot of activity over Viper and Simplicity.
check the dev section, the sticky that says sticky roll up. All the sticky's are in there.
s-off it,then enjoy flashing
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
Any recommendations on which ROM? I know it's subjective but I'd like to hear what thoughts on which are good picks nowadays.
Edit: Btw, is it okay if I keep it S-On. Getting a wire to do stuff sounds like too much work and I'm not sure it's worth the effort...I'm staying at a friend's so it's not very convenient...
If you are going to NOT S-Off then read everything carefully. Without being S-off, once you do an upgrade you can not go back. Not being s-off just makes everything more difficult. Take the 10 minutes and do it, it is well worth it.
As for Roms, if the new Rezound comes with GB you are limited and will need to do a firmware patch. If your new Rom comes with and I doubt it the new Global update, you can go with most new Roms. I always recommend to first get your feet wet with a CleamRom, it has not been updated in a while but is always rock solid. Also read each of the Rom info carefully as well, some are now only being made for S-off only.
Take the OTA update and use your phone stock for awhile to make sure there are no issues with it. After that use hansoons tool to unlock, root, and flash a custom recovery

FWIW on the ROM front, I recently moved from cleanrom 4.5 (which is no longer being updated) to ICS cubed and am very happy with the results

From iPhone to Android

So I had my iPhone 4S (Jailbroken of course) for about a year and i got bored with it. Once my upgrade came I decided to give Android a try.
I need to know everrrrrryyyy thing about the Android. (not literally)
I think im rooted already, here are some screen shots to see what I am working with. (Got the phone 2 days ago)
I also am not sure if I am flashing the ROM's correctly, in my about it says i have Stock with Goodies ROM (downloaded here) but some of the features are missing, like landscape rosie and the power down options for recovery.
I also have no freaking clue what S-OFF and S-ON is so could someone explain that to me,
And
I also see alot of mods being implmented by txt editors codes n such, replacement of codes. Can I get a brief on that as well?
I really need gudiance, I did everything on my own and im not sure if I did any of it correctly. Ive been reading that MeanROM ICS is popular I had it but I switched to stock goodies.
My task list is as follows,
Install Stock ROM,
LazyPanda S-OFF,
ROOT,
Remove Tampered,
Install MeanROM ICS
How Do I acomplish this ^ in the correct order, from where im standing in my screenshots but note in the bootloader screenshot mine is UNLOCKED not locked
Here is a good introductory tutorial on the evo lte and android in general (thank om4):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869377
It looks like your bootloader was unlocked at one point and then relocked. The good news is you have the right hboot version for s-off (1.12) so you should do that first. You'll need to do it with a ROM that's a 1.12 or 1.13 base though (not sure what base stock w/ goodies 2.16 is), so if that's not what you're currently running you'll need to unlock the bootloader first and flash one (like Fresh 5.1.1). S-off will give you full access to the phone's internal memory and allow you to flash anything, whereas only unlocking the bootloader and remaining s-on has some limitations. Read the first couple of posts in this thread to learn how:

I agree. I went as far as starting a new line on my account and letting my roommate get a GS3 with it. He was such an IPhone lover to the max.
I rooted his Sammy (technically mine) and showed him how to flash ROMs, nandroid (backup up ROMs, for Op) and install themes, put apps in system, ect, and everything else you can do with an android. He loves that he made the switch and can't believe how much he was missing. He sends me new threads and gets so excited to show me his latest mods, ROMs, tweaks, ect.

My biggest advice would be to read read read. That's what I did when I first started rooting phones years ago.
