Battery Life after ICS read other threads still cluless - HTC Amaze 4G

I did search for my problem followed many of the steps and still clueless
Summary: I got my htc amaze around 5 days ago from craigslist phone looked great almost in perfect shape, I did notice that the battery was going down to quickly so I did a factory reset, battery seemed a little better.
I did the following:
-factory reset (somewhat better)
-charged battery to 100% then went to 4EXT and wipe dalvik cache + cache and wipe battery stats (just did this)
phone seemed better yesterday when I did the wipe but it was 100% before I went to sleep and in the morning it was at 91%, and when I used it for 5m it began to drop to almost 80%

I bet you have an Anker battery.

Call HTC (866-449-8358). You'll need to give them the phone's serial number (Settings->About Phone->Phone Identity->Device serial number). Tell them your phone is randomly shutting off and that you get a battery error notification after charging and turning it back on (even if this isn't happening to you, it likely will soon).
They should offer to send you a new battery, if not, steer the conversation that way. When asked, tell them that you have indeed factory reset the phone, etc. Of course, don't tell them anything about wiping battery stats, or that you are running a custom ROM, or are rooted, if you are, and don't tell them that the phone is used (the warranty only applies to the first owner -- so hopefully they didn't call HTC as well). You'll need a credit card for ~$40 authorization, and you'll need to pay shipping of your old battery back after you receive the new battery. You'll not be charged $40 if you return your old battery.
Sending the old battery back seems to be a new thing for HTC. The first 2 batteries I replaced through them didn't require me to send the old one back, or have a $40 authorization. #3 and #4 did.
I have not had good luck with Anker batteries in my Amaze. They hold a great charge at first, but then die far more quickly than the OEM batteries from HTC, to the point of holding no charge at all.

I want to know first if its not something that is causing this, because even if I get a new battery and it continues to do this than that means the battery is just going to "help" me but not fix the problem

If you've factory reset, your phone is stock (not rooted), and you're running the official ICS delivered over the air (OTA), then you are likely experiencing "normal" Amaze battery draw. With a weak battery, it is just more apparent.
I would start by replacing the battery. If you still see the problem after that, then it's time to look elsewhere. That elsewhere may be a call back to HTC.
If your Amaze is under warranty, but not purchased from T-Mobile, HTC is the best place to resolve these issues. Reporting the battery problem to HTC is a good way to check the warranty status of your phone.

well I just checked an its an official ICS rom but its rooted since I rooted it myself, good call since I did buy if off craigslist Ill see if its under warranty which Im pretty sure guy said he bought it in February so lets hope and I get a a new battery

Having the same issue. Was on stock ics after receiving a refurb from T-Mobile since my original amaze camera burnt out. Replacement was doing great until a couple weeks ago after having it for a few months.I had a feeling it was the battery. Seems to be a common problem based on people I know who also have an amaze. Yet I'm still a fan of HTC... I just like this phone too much right now. I probably won't even get it fixed. I just turn my phone right back on after it randomly shuts off or charge it up whenever the battery decides to drop %5 while quickly checking the weather smh.

exactly like mine I already ordered a new battery and back cover ill see if it gets better I also flashed the energy rom and seems to be better but not quite good

[Q] Phone Battery Level Discretion

I'm having an issue with my phone battery level detection.
It won't charge past 97%. I noticed it lately within the last few days, i would charge my phone, but when i would grab my phone for the day and take it off the charger, it instantly dropped down to as low as 95%. But, when i plug in the AC cable, it says 100% charged.
Anyone have any info about this? Also, i powered the phone down and charged it fully with the AC adapter, and the highest level i got was 97%.
Also, i have seen the phone has a lag issue, gps issue, no word about froyo, and no notification led. Most of those were fine for me, but since i've had the phone, most of the battery has been used for cell stand by even though i've been in areas with excellent reception. And now with this battery level discretion, i'm a little worried about my decision. I only have tomorrow to return the phone and now that idea is gaining more and more weight for me.

1.) I would say exchange your battery (I have never heard on that issue)
2.) There is something called a lag fix.. So search next time..
3.) There is also a GPS fix.. So once, again.. search
Defiantly keep the phone.. Download a ROM called Bionix 1.3 With Lagfix& OC/UV (1.4 will be released tomorrow)
Download a program called SetCPU and OV it to 1.2 (It will make the phone much faster)

I know there's a lag fix but why should we need that in the first place? I personally haven't needed a lag fix, but I haven't heard anything from Samsung about fixing it.
Also for the gps, flashing patches is still pretty hit or moss for a lot of people and even then, I've seen a lot of people that have their compassion still messed up. My question is not along the lines of "why isn't Samsung doing more to fix this issue across theory US galaxy s line?"
I mean, I've seen probably 3 official updates to "fix" the gps/compass issue, and the only one I haven't heard about the results is the fascinate. And I haven't heard ANYTHING from T-Mobile about fixing ANY is the issues that the vibrant has, on than "they're working on it".
It's word, if it wast for me reading the new engadget post today polling about people's epic and listing the problems it's facing (which most seem to echo across the galaxy s line) coupled with this battery issue, I wouldn't have second guessed my phone decision. But when o saw this, and my battery, it gave me a bad taste similar to what I faced in the slide community.
I love this phone, don't get me wrong. I'm just worried about Samsung and T-Mobile management calls.

I already have that installed. Would it get rid of my phone rating battery in cell standby or fix the part where I only can charge to 98%?
I'm going to try charging from a computer use to see if it's a charger problem or phone problem.
Edit: I am running JAC's kernel for the past 2 days, I wonder if that has anything to do with the charging discrepancy? Also, I'm not running it overclocked.

If you have such a problem with it then just take it back & quit whining.
All we are trying to do here is make the phone better, Your right you SHOULDNT need a lag fix in the first place.. but apparently YOU do
Like I said about the not charging all the way thing, just take it to your tmobile store & get a new battery.. Not to mention that they actually did say that froyo would be released after G2 witch is going to be sometime next month I beleive
I haven't seen the need for a lag fix myself and sorry is this entire thread sound like a rant/whine-fest. I do love what's been done for the phone in the face of it's adversity. And for the most part, I am pretty optimistic about Samsung/T-Mobile fixing the issues this has. I more just writing it all down at once to get it out if my system.

i see that. i also see that tmobile twittered about an OTA soon and not to flash the JI5. that's really more than i've seen from them about the phone lately, albeit still extremely ambiguous.
Also, i just unplugged my phone from USB computer charging. It charged to 100% but when i unplugged my phone it went back down to 97%. So it's not charger related. I'll be going into tmobile tomorrow and seeing if i can say whether it's the battery or the phone by testing out a different vibrant and charging my battery in there.
Also, i am getting kinda pissed that my phone "appears" to get extremely poor reception. It goes from strong signal to nothing, but still saying tmobile in the same place.

I'm talking about JI6 not JI5...
My vibrant has done the same thing once. I thought it was weird. Hasn't done it since though. I really don't care about one or two ticks on the battery guage. I use battery indicator pro though because the built in battery meter sucks.
i use a flashed version of the battery status reader as well as battery indicator. And it doesn't go up to 100% unless i'm using the charger. but once it's off the charger, it drops to 97%.

im having the exact issue, ive already gone thru clockwork and wiped the batt stats n still the same problem, it says 100% charged, take it off the charger and drops down to 97%.... i was tempted to swap a battery for a dude i was unlocking his phone for (he didnt know it was uber easy lol, so i made $10 for my hard efforts) but i didnt... im calling tmobile so they can send me another one as i type..

I went to my local tmobile store, they swapped batteries. They also told me they couldn't do anything since i was out of the 14 day exchange period. The thing is though, i bought the phone outright, and when you do that you have a 30 day return period.
But they also didn't have any vibrants in stock so i had to go to the nearest corporate store. I got there, and they were puzzled as to why i was having an issue, saying that "it lasts for the stated amount of time, so i'll most likely have to charge you a $10 restocking fee" crap. They ended up doing a 1 time courtesy exchange. I'll see how this vibrant goes. I also checked to make sure it wasn't hardware locked (it go into recovery with the volume keys).
I don't think it's a battery issue, as I've seen it quite often. Mine does this sometimes as well but it doesn't really bother me. Someone posted that there was a fix you could do using ADB from the computer, but it was a month or so ago and I'm too lazy to look for it.

well after swapping my battery for a new one and experiencing the same issue, i know it's not battery related. it's phone related. I want my phone to charge fully, not almost fully.

System clock resetting to Sat 1 Jan. 2000 at every battery change

Simple scenario: I have a couple batteries, I'd rather use one and then swap it out when it's 10%, inserting the other charged one.
With every device I've owned, removing the battery didn't automatically lead to losing the date&time settings (not even on my Nokia 6111, as long as you were fast in plugging the new one in), while with this expensive beast of phone, it appears that even if you slightly flip out the battery and reinsert it in a matter of less than a second, rebooting WILL lead to the clock being reset to the first of january of the year 2000.
On my HD2, leaving the battery out for half a day didn't reset the clock.
This behaviour doesn't change whether you set the clock to automatic or not.
What surprises me is that noone in the internet seems to be swapping batteries on their S II, because noone else reported this problem.
Do any of you have any kind of suggestion?
Leaving the clock to "automatic" also doesn't appear to be resetting to the correct date, not even if I set on and off airplane mode to re-shake with my carrier.
Does the fact that noone replied mean that I am the only one having this problem (which would call for a warranty servicing), or that noone ever needs to swap batteries, or lastly that noone does even care?

For starters though, since this would somehow ease my mind, does your clock also get reset if you unplug the battery for a short while? (suppose you own a SGSII as well since you're in here )

I would exclude it depends anyhow from the custom roms I've installed, I never tried unplugging battery on the stock rom before flashing.
This never happened to me in any new phone. It used to happen in my old Nokia phones when they get old (after 1 or 2 years)
There is an internal battery to keep the clock which died in your GSII.
Warranty shall cover it

So here's the news. Had to wait for monday to come in order to call the phone support.
Not very much surprisingly they told me that the system clock resetting to Sat 1 Jan 2000 whenever you take out the battery is "perfectly normal" (yeah, welcome to 2011).
Which collides with what you, @JJEgan and @salamt, reported.
So it makes me think the gal at the phone was bullsh*tting me.
She confirmed though that flashing custom roms will invalidate the warranty. No change there.

I take my battery out frequently and clock stays the same presume left out for a couple of days it would lose the charge and clock reset .

So this is a good indication of how samsung support tells you nice tales. Actually this scares me more than the fact that the phone's backup battery was DOA.

my S2 keeps the clock running without battery at least for half an hour, so i assume your device has an malfunction with the internal battery as user salamt already has stated.
I did sent in my S2 already 3 times to Samsung warranty support because of another hardware fault (sound of lower Microphone is very low and stuttering, so people have trouble to hear me).
Everytime i get it back my clock says something with Year 2000 - Hey the phone isnt that old
My HD2 is keeping the clock running for weeks without an battery ...
Send in your phone for warranty, if its important for you to switch batteries.
But be aware, Samsungs customer support isnt the best
I did buy the official Samsung 2000mAh battery with nice cover from Amazon and its nearby not possible to suck the S2 empty on one day.

More confirmations about this glitch of mine, that is a real glitch instead of "completely normal feature" as the Samsung support would like to pass it by.
Thank you for adding yet another precious feedback with this aspect, as now I am positive the phone is defective.
You are correct, the phone doesn't have internal batteries, it's a capacitor, which runs the timing chip, which controls everything on the phone, which without power should run for about 48 hours give or take. Faulty capacitor is definitely grounds for a warranty repair, and if you gets someone who says it's "normal" ask for their supervisor, and if their supervisor is still that ignorant, keep going up the chain.
You have to realize that "customer support" for most companies basically work the same as insurance companies, the fewer the claims, the better, so if you can make a customer live with an issue that doesn't kill the phone, they do it. However, a faulty capacitor can surge a mainboard, and truly kill electronics, get it fixed while you still have a warranty to fall back on!

Sure my hd2 now feels like a slow brick compared to the superlight all-plastic S2, but at least I know it's been making me company for the last couple years, and I trust it.

Just to confirm, is there really no "battery" or some power source (like the BIOS battery) for phone to "remember" the time and date? Instead it uses a capacitor? just wanna know in case customer service bull**** me. But i dont think a battery (even those coin-sized) would fit in the sgs2
Since I've long since sold my SGS2 and now am using a SGN, which does remember the time after a battery swap, I can tell you definitely it's a hardware problem.
Alas, support WILL bs you if they can, but I suppose if you know they are doing that, you can make a strong voice and have them issue a repair/switch service for you, by telling them up front you know you're right and wll be speaking with a superior/write anout it on your blog.

I agree that they were BS'ing you. Otherwise, why would there be component BAT500 which other users have reported Samsung service centres have told them has leaked and destroyed their WiFi chip? http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=28036#c471
BAT500 is an EDL Capacitor which stores charge while the battery is in then slowly dischargers when the battery is removed. My phone started loosing the clock immediately when the battery is removed but its stopped now. I believe its could be one of two things but I can't be 100% sure. I had my phone on charge every night for that last couple of weeks and I noticed the issue. Over the last two days I have let the phone run flat and charged it again and now it remembers the time when I remove the battery for at least a minute. The other theory is that I also had wifi always on for the last couple of weeks and that also has been off for two days now. The wifi chip is right next to the capacitor and if the chip was to get warm it could cause the capacitor to malfunction.

thanks for all the valuable inputs. i will go to SSC next week. Have been putting it off cos tmr i am going overseas and i nid my S2 with me.
Hopefully they are willing to change.

[Q] Ridiculously Hot, Now Nothing?

I'm having some issues with my phone today guys. I went to sleep with my phone on charge (like I have done every single night since I've had the phone), and when I woke up my phone was ridiculously hot. That hot that I couldn't even hold it in my hand. My old HD2 got hot, but nothing like this.
I'm afraid some of the internals have fried or something. I'm on an NDT MIUI ROM. I think it's version 4.X.X or something. But basically now, my phone will not charge a single bit. It'll go to the battery empty screen, then to the Galaxy S II screen, turn on, show my notifications then after every notification has shown, it goes back off. While plugged in.
What's the problem and what can I do to rectify it? A new battery?

EDIT: Now it's just looping between the no battery (empty battery with circle) and the Galaxy S II screen.
I was getting to the lockscreen a while ago.
That was over the wall charger, I'm now trying to charge it off my laptop if that matters.

Does the battery look fattened?..try changing batteries,if that didn't work then I'm afraid you have to take it to Samsung..

I don't quite understand what you mean by 'fattened'. If you mean bigger, then no it still fits quite comfortably into the phone. I'm going to try get a hold of another battery later and I'll give it a go. If I do end up having to send it to Samsung, what will they do knowing it has a custom ROM on it? My flash counter is only 2, but I wouldn't even be able to get into the bootloader, as I don't have enough battery to do so.
Luck of the draw basically if you can't reflash stock firmware/jig it.
Some people on here have reported Samsung/whomever has repaired it has played hardball & not repaired it under warranty (which they're entitled to do, which means you pay for it), and some people have reported they've had it fixed under warranty regardless.
At the end of the day, running non-stock firmware voids your warranty (regardless of whether some people on here think that's wrong, etc), and if you can't return the phone to stock firmware and you do get it fixed under warranty you can consider yourself lucky.

At the end of the day, running non-stock firmware voids your warranty (regardless of whether some people on here think that's wrong, etc), and if you can't return the phone to stock firmware and you do get it fixed under warranty you can consider yourself lucky.

OK cheers for that. I unlocked it using some app also, will that have any effect?
I'm really hoping I don't have to go down that route and that a new battery will have it back up and running again. I just feel like it's struggling to keep power to it or something, when on the battery screen, the screen slightly flickers if you look closely, and on the boot anim. the capacitive buttons struggle for light while the screen is as good as it always was.
Also, it's just saying "LOW BATTERY !! CAN'T DOWNLOAD !!" when I try get into the bootloader/download mode w/e it's called so I guess there's hope it's only the battery?
Good news! I went to a phone shop, tried a cheap Chinese battery and it seemed to turn on and load everything just fine. Another shop I tried had an original OEM (well atleast an OEM sticker) battery and that wouldn't work. It's weird! Let's hope my battery can last a suitable amount of time on the Chinese battery. Any recommendations on where I could find an official battery? Looked on Amazon, and some of the reviews are claiming that it's actually just a cheap battery with a Samsung sticker.

Diagnostics to make sure phone is 100% after resetting

My friend and I both had AT&T Note i717's (about the same age), and I recently bought a Note 3. She is happy to stick to the original note, at least for a while (she is eyeing a carrier move once the 2 years are up).
Recently, her phone started behaving very badly (dying without warning, battery numbers seemed random, apps wouldn't update, etc). So, she's got my old phone now - we xferred her contacts, swapped sim cards, and I left with her old, badly behaved phone and some starbucks gift cards.
I've reset the phone to factory, and updated to latest official firmware. To a cursory inspection, the phone appears to work, but I'd like some sort of burn-in or diagnostic tool that I can run on it that will give me some assurances that the issue was purely software (if it was) or whether there was an underlying hardware issue that contributed to it.
Does anyone have any recommendations about what I could do to verify that this phone is okay?

If the battery is about a year old, probably time for a new one. Need to order one myself.

The battery is less than a year old.
My friend had been swapping between batteries (because her phone kept dying - crazy stuff, like going from 60% to 20% and then back to 40% without charging, taking a "dead" battery out and reinserting it and getting 40% and hours of use from it, and frequently leaving her with neither battery working), and reported that she saw this sort of erratic battery behavior with any battery she put in, and the one I wound up with was the replacement battery she had bought a while ago (when the USB charging port was broken - she was powering her phone by swapping batteries while waiting for the part in the mail).
Basically, I want to see if we can reproduce the battery insanity now, with one of the batteries that is known to cause it.
If it cannot be reproduced now, that would imply that the whole thing might just have been part of the software issues.
If it can still be reproduced, that indicates either a hardware or battery issue - and this could be isolated by swapping in a fresh battery.

My phone won't keep a charge, it charges only to a certain point while on the charger (that is any charger, inc. the one that came with the phone), but will die within about 15-20 mins after taking it off of the charger, and if I use it while on the charger it will drain the battery the same way as if it was off of the charger, and die within 10-15 mins! Likewise, it started doing this funky vibrating stuff just an hour ago and will not boot up while on the charger at all anymore! I did a little research and found different opinions.. the most relevant being a need to replace the charger port and the other to change the battery. This is crazy as my phone as well as the accompanying accessories such as the battery and the charger were bought brand spanking new and SHOULD NOT be going crazy like this!

I take it the phone is 100% stock; not rooted or no custom ROM? And you say that it is new and you did nothing to cause this? You didn't get it wet?
Try a factory restore. If that doesn't help then I would try a new battery.
Sounds like a failed battery to me.
A trip to your phone carrier store would be easy enough. I think they would at least try another battery for quick diagnosis.

No, I did no cause the issue nor did I get my phone wet. It simply started doing what I described in my initial post.. I noticed it when I plugged my phone in and it has been an ongoing situation for about 4-5 days now.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I figured that the battery was the issue. I had a Samsung Galaxy 3 prior to purchasing the Note and it had the exact same issue,.. well not the same exact symptoms, but the need for a new battery due to not taking a charge, and I hadn't had that particular phone more than 6 months! Perhaps it is a Samsung manufacturing issue with faulty batteries, similar to car manufacturers who have massive recalls on their vehicles due to faulty engine or other car parts. My physician told me that I needed to switch to an IPhone, lol... better quality I assume. Perhaps he is right.. ???

Oh.. I forgot, yes the phone is 100% stock as you assumed. Terrible that it is doing what it is doing! Guess I need to get that battery then... ho hum.. more moola out of my darn pockets!
Your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobil, etc) store would at least put in a known good battery to see if that is all it is. And if so, then a new the cost of a new battery is next.
And as far as the iPhone......been down that road, and I could never go back to the iPhone. It was good for it's purpose and reliable. But NO more reliable than any Android phone I've owned. (3 of them).
And should the battery die in the iPhone, you will need to take it or send it back to an iPhone repair center. You don't just pull the back of it off, and replace the battery. At least in my 2 - iPhone 3G versions anyway.
And then there is rooting...cant hack an iPhone. You can jail break them, but that is not the same thing, and you still have no control over the OS.
JMO on the apple stuff.. Good, but VERY limited.
Keep your Note, it's better IMO, and has a huge screen.
