Rommanager , CWM on SGS2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA-community,
I've rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2.
Model : GT-L9100
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband : L9100XXLPW
Kernelversion : 3.0.15-L9100XWLPD-CL524746 [email protected] #3
Build : IML74K.XWLPD
I've read that I could get CWM on my phone by installing ROMmanager.
When I go in ROMmanager and use the option to install CWM.
It freezes around 95% , the app stops and give the option to quit rommanager.
After restarting Rommanager I see that i have "succesfully"installed CWM , but when I click on the start recovery my phone Freezes which only stops by pulling the battery.
What should I do to get CWM running.
There is a halve CWM on my phone , which I don't know how to remove.
And how do I get a working CWM since I need it for installing ROMS.
Also I dont trust ROMmanager atm so is there another app which could flash a rom , or is there a way to fix the rommanager?

Run away from ROM manager, it's not fully compatible with our phone.
You need ROOT access inorder to get CWM recovery.
Visit this THREAD for the safest rooting method
then flash this Siyah or Speedmod via CWM recovery in order to have a permanent CWM recovery (optional)

I am following the guide that you send me.
I've installed the CWM , but when I continue CWM blinks for a second resetting to the first option.
I have still acces to my phone or whatéver

I've found out that using the volume buttons makes it reset , but the touch screen works.
Now im backing up my phone and install root files.
But i get a message no sd-ex found and can't install the rooting file

If you try it before flashing a custom kernel, your device will be bricked. It's a known issue. don't try it before flashing a custom kernel
good luck

Wow!
You my friend, are the lucky one!

@Jokesy - Just a quick info..Even i did a backup using CWM backup and it was successful. I am on stock ICS 4.0.3 XWLP7.
I think the phone would get bricked if you try backup using CWM on a phone that has stock ICS 4.0.4. Correct me if i am wrong here.

You are partially right.
**If you're trying to do a ROM backup in CWM recovery**
1. Yes, the phone will be bricked if you are running stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM with stock/stock-based kernel
2. No, even if you 1. is applicable to you but you have a sane emmc chip.
-The only reason why I don't want people to risk it even after confirming their emmc chip is sane, is because I want them to be 100% safe.
I'll juststop here because Other points might lead to greater confusion.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII

[Q] rooted device can't install new ROM

Hello everybody,
First I'd like to thank to community for the hard work. I v read a countless amount of pages of this forum and I can't even imagine the time people spent helping on issues or writing tutorials.
So thank you if you re up to spend few minutes on my specific case (and sorry for the bad english).
Here is my device and the different version of kernel ...
1/ Rooting my device (tutorial in french translated from xda)
http://www.cnetfrance.fr/produits/guide-rooter-son-galaxy-s2-39763841.htm
S-Root version used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Everything went pretty well when I rooted the GS2. I got the Superuser app so i figure it's ok.
I just used a modified kernel found on xda who was corresponding the my base band version (just the PDA in Odin).
2/ Installing a new ROM (Cyanogenmod by Rom Manager)
I followed : http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/ and http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide (official guide) using Rom Manager premium.
When i tried to reboot in Recovery (manually or with Rom Manager), i can't find the "Install the zip" option, I have 4 available: "Update from the zip", the 2 wiping/delete options and the reboot.
So obviously if i try to wipe files, wipe the cache then to update with the zip I have the following Error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
Do you have any idea what went wrong in the process ?
Should i flash the phone withOdin and change my base band version to another one ?
For info, I did the Permission Fix option in Rom Manager too. Didnt help.
Thanks a lot.
U need clockworkmod instaled first..

You didn't install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for theses answers but I think I installed it with Rom Manager and i flashed it to the last version.
(joined file 1 : cwm rom manager.jpg)
When i reboot in recovery mode here is the only options available (and it's the problem i pointed out) :
(joined file 2 : 20111125_13221022.jpg)
Maybe a problem with my SD card ?

As we've already said, you haven't installed CWM Recovery. You see at the top of your second photo where it says "Android system recovery (3e)"? That's stock recovery.
you can't install CWM recovery thru ROM manager.
just flash the CF Root Kernel for KI4 thru ODIN , you will have CWM recovery.
Hmm I understand about the CWM version I'm booting with, but as you can see on the first capture, my kernel version is a modified one i got after using Odin (puting this Kernel : GT-I9100_XXKI4_insecure.tar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671).
I got the root access by S2 Root.
Ok I think I installed only the Kernel and not CF Root available here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I ll try to redo Odin and stuff and let you know if I'm still alive.
So it's not great right now. I have installed CF Root with Odin, so I had CWM on my phone (I could see the application). Then after reboot with CWM Recovery and installing Cyanogenmod, the phone doesnt want to start anymore.....
I tried to apply the insecure kernel again with Odin but still impossible to download. I'm stuck on the screen with the yellow sign and written Galaxy S2.
HALP !!
I just tried to put back the official firware version : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and put it in my phone with Odin.
Ok, I dont have the yellow sign anywore but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen (where it's written Samsung GALAXY s II)...
What should I try ?
I'm still able to boot with CWM recovery but I didn't make any backup and nothing work.
Do you think the phone is dead ?
5 posts in a row?
So, just to clarify, you've tried to install CM7, which amongst other things tells you to do a nandroid backup, and also to flash twice in succession. Did you do either of these things? The instructions are there to be followed, don't just ignore them.
Ok my bad I didn't backup anything because I had no data to backup. This was maybe a bad move...
Anyway, I tried to flash it twice yes. Right now, i'm working with a modified Kernel (with CF Root), and booting in CWM Recovery. When I want to flash again by installing from the .zip I get a Satus 7 Error.
In CWM, every advanced options are apparently available but I dont know anything about them.
And just so you know, on my SD Card i have 1 update.zip and the update-cm-7.1.0-Galaxys2.... .zip from Cyanogen.

Flash a stock rom with Odin and then root your phone again. Start reading and follow procedures when you want to flash custom roms again .See Intratechs`s thread for a stock rom
Thanks for your reply.
I did it, it didn't work, I mean i could flash with Odin but the reboot doesn't work : the start screen appeared without the yellow sign, but it's stuck on it.
--- update
FYI, I installed Rom Manager yesterday, it way interact in a bad way with CWM Recovery.
For now i can mount USB by CWM Recovery but cannot do anything else.
If you have a method to clean completely the phone ? Maybe the bootloader is broken...

Maybe I should re partition my SD card...

I re partitionned my SD Card with Odin and tried to install a new stock ROM. Everything pass with Odin but to finalize the set up (while reboot), I got some errors and still the same problem during the boot. It's stuck !
I installed a insecure Kernel so I can access CWM Recovery but still stuck and now I can't mount anything .

Cf root will give u root and CWM recovery, so u're be able to install custom rom
1. Download any version of CWM from here
2. Get desired rom (kernel too if you want)
3. Place everything in Externel SDcard
4. Boot into stock recovery (Power+Home+Vol up)
5. Use stock recovery to flash CWM
6. Backup Current stock rom
7. Wipe the usual
8. Flash Custom rom (Or just kernel)
9. Reboot
10. ?? Profit ??
Now you got Custom rom or Kernel + Full stock rom backup (can always get stock rom from sammobile if you lose it)

Thank u for the response. But im a bit scared flash or wipe in temp touch recovery. Because a friend of mine got his s2 super bricked while trying to flash on stock 4.04 kernel. does this emcc bug affect 4.03 stock kernels as well? So can i just flash the latest Siyah Kernel using ODIN ??
Any time you root/flash a Rom theres a chance to brick your phone. What -Grift- said is the easiest and best way to flash a custom Rom in my opinion. Just make a Nandroid backup, delete data and cache, install the zip file from your SD card. I've flashed 4 Roms so far with this phone, all successfully. Currently I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 on my DINC 2. Good luck on whatever method you choose.

Go into download mode, connect your phone to your computer and use Odin to flash a custom kernel to your phone. That done, you have root and you're safe from the emmc superbug. (EDIT: although 4.0.3 doesnt have the bug, if thats what is bothering you) You can then flash a custom rom or whatever else you please. Use the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com
Instructions on how to use Odin are available all over this site and on the web in general. Search and you'll get it.
If you don't wanna use Odin, your only other option is flashing temporary CWM. Search for rachmat3's method or use the one mentioned above. All three are equally safe provided you read up on the procedure adequately.
99.9% of the phones getting bricked is coz people jump headlong into the procedure without first bothering to educate themselves on how to go about it. They get what they deserve.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app.
If noobs on xda have taught me one thing, its that smartphones just aren't for everyone.
Or just wipe only when you have flash the rom (custom recoveries are safe e.g siyah dorimanx)
Edit: AFAIK 4.0.3 are safe the bug is with leaked 4.0.4?

You cannot install CWM recovery unless you root your phone. . Did you try going to recovery using button combo?? Sometimes, if roots after you manually go into recovery.
If not done, download Galaxy S3 unified toolkit and root using that.

If the cf root procedure was successful I wouldn't worry about installing a diff recovery just yet, lets get the phone booting 1st. Download a custom rom and get it moved onto your external sd card, Boot into recovery(from power off, press volume up, home button and power), make sure its custom and not default. Then install the custom rom zip and reboot it should hopefully fully reboot. then look into installing a newer custom recovery.

yes, saw it. its a custom rom. tried wipe data / cache but didn't work. will try to install custom rom sentinel now.
was able to install the custom rom but kept on rebooting after few minutes. it already happened thrice now.
anything i am missing?
It could be the insecure kernel you used earlier is making it unstable, probably if the custom rom doesn't install a kernel. Only thing I can think of is install an official Samsung g3 rom which should repair all the partitions that might of been damaged or corrupted, use it for a while to make sure no reboots. Then go through root and install of custom rom again. In theory creating a good foundation to install a custom rom on.
Just out of curiosity did u download an official Samsung rom before starting to flash in case u need to send it away or sell it on? If not what network/country are u using? Is the phone locked to the network or unlocked?
Edit:- I never used a kernel flash to root my phone just used cf root 6.4 to get root and custom recovery cwm. I only changed my recovery this weekend to Phil touch.

Help with getting clockworkmod in S2

Okay so I managed to root my phone using this method ; http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...m.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2116549
And root works. Now I want to get clockworkmod on my phone. I followed some steps on the internet and ended up getting my phone bricked. I managed to get it working again. Can someone please tell me what to do right? I used odin before and that was the cause of my bricking. So i'd rather not use that again.
I went to the clockworkmod/rommanger website and i found the s2 "Download Recovery" thing. If i flash this through the android recovery system will it work?
Help me out here.
Thanks in advance
What do you mean "I want to get cwm on my phone".
That file should root your phone and install cwm.
Are you getting confused because there no icon.
Dont use rommanager as that can have dire effects on a phone.
And next time put in ALL details about your phone;model, rom etc.

If you are having official stock 4.1.2 rom then go to settings/about phone and check your baseband and then Go to philz Thread you can search it on XDA . Choose the zip one flash it from recovery you will get CWM.
Hope it helps

What do you mean "I want to get cwm on my phone".
That file should root your phone and install cwm.
Are you getting confused because there no icon.
Dont use rommanager as that can have dire effects on a phone.
And next time put in ALL details about your phone;model, rom etc.

I mean , when I boot into recovery its the default android recovery. Not the cwm. Not sure how to explain it but even before i rooted my phone. I had to boot into recovery, and the default android recovery screen comes when you want to flash the zip. After that I re boot into recovery the android one comes, not the cwm. So yeah the icon or the blue-ish recovery screen doesnt appear

Ok,I know what you mean now. That used to happen with rachmats rooting method;a temp cwm was flashed, and when rebooted, the phone went back to stock recovery.
Several people in the know recommend using pc odin(think you said you didnt want to use it) because it is risky flashing stuff by other methods. If you use odin to do stuff, then that means it is ready to help you out if flashing by cwm or mobile odin goes wrong.

So what can I do? I dont mind flashing cwm with odin as long as I dont brick my phone again. I've already rooted, if i use odin to get cwm , will it cause problems? Is there no other way to get cwm without odin? Maybe flashing a zip?
Yes,Jeetu said earlier.

You can easily switch stock recovery to cwm with flashify app,No need Odin. Just flash recovery.img with this app & also u can flash custom kernals.

Sadly didn't work, it says that my phone didn't pass the compability test so what's now? When i look for it on google play it says "your device isn't compatible with this version" but it installed succefully on my device running originally 2.3.6 with generic kitkat rom in 4.4.2 is there any method to do it in odin at least? Or custom kernel would be better? Answers will be appreciated.
No way to change it, also the risk is extreme i don't wanna brick my device, even i installed a custom kernel from odin, it showed "PASS" and my phone restarted and appeared the samsung logo later it turned off and restarted again and later the screen kept in white and i did need to get back to the old kernel
Anyway flash the stock recovery it's impossible to do.

You know that without cwm recovery u can't flash custom roms & kernals.
Pleas clear that which recovery u want stock recovery or cwm recovery?
And why?
Then I can easily guide or help u.
Best regards.
I want to change stock recovery to cwm recovery. I want cwm permanently no temporal, i know the zip file it's temporal but i want it permanent! I don't know how my phone did install "Compact" kernel with stock recovery and not with cwm i've had to do it that way 'cause odin didn't work and my phone got bricked
Can i install cwm permanent on samsung galaxy young duos? (S6102B)
I'll be very grateful if somebody could explain me!
The reason why i want cwm permanent and why i want it it's because i don't want to enter in recovery and see always the limited stock recovery with just 4 options

You can check everything related with ur device in this forum..
