Does your s3 get laggy after a few weeks of no reboot? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does your s3 get laggy after a few weeks of usage without a reboot or killing any apps in the task manager ? It happened to me today. I tried playing dead trigger and the game was soooo laggy. At first I thought it was due to an update of the game so I decided to stop playing it. When I launched my internet, the site seemed to froze and start lagging too. I checked my ram usage and it was below 600 but I had a lot of apps in the task manager. I then decided to reboot and everything seemed fine after. Is this normal? Should I go to task manager each time and clear it after I use an app?

Try to restart it from time to time, new update on jelly bean will come soon and things will go much faster. You can look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30626647#post30626647

I never tried to dont reboot the device for A FEW WEEKS....
I reboot it every 4-6 Days, because i did it in the past with all my devices and went well with it.
Reboot the device if you see slow downs and you will be fine

yea I have the same but don't think its a 'problem', you have to reboot even your computer every now and then to make it work well.

Maybe the ROM autokills the running programs

2 or 3 times a week I use my phone until the battery is flat, then charge it overnight while off. Always helps it. Keeps the battery cells at low percentage alive as well.
My laptop was constantly on charge took it off and it died all the time, as the battery never got used.

Flashing roms every week. Really difficult not to reboot in a few weeks

Most likely...

Yeah, that would make sense the rom over time uses more and more ram! I had this problem and found this out quite be accident

[Q] Atrix reboots are killing me.

My Atrix has rebooted itself at least 6 times today. Once while I was trying to post this. How do I make it stop? This sucks.
I tried to search the forum but couldn't do it from my phone. Go figure.
Take it back? Software restore? I haven't had a single random reboot

No one has really figured out what is causing the reboots. What do you have installed/Mods. One theory is if you have some after market task killer (ATK - Advanced Task Killer) it might be killing the OS causing your phone to reboot, again thats only one theory.
Yeah I havnt had a single reboot, knock on wood lol, I would say take it back

Right out of the box. Not rooted (yet) or anything. I notice that the task manager on this phone lets apps run wild unlike my "old" Droid 2. I have a hot phone with sub par battery life. I am wondering if I have a memory leak somewhere.
I have noticed apps like Pandora tend to lock up as a widget but continue to burn through memory. I am hoping for a system update soon.

I also have not had my Atrix reboot on it's own. You can try to hard reset your phone and not reload your apps to see if it's one of your apps causing the problem. But I bet you will have to get a replacement phone.
One thing that has started happening to me is when I used the speedtest.net app it'll run one good speed test the second run it'll display 50kbps down 50kbps up then it'll reboot very odd don't know why this might be

Make sure you charge your phone full to 100% before doing a hard reset... This helped my battery life tremendously... Don't forget to backup your data
I do get random reboots, but only once in awhile (3x since I can remember from release date of Feb. 22)... I think Motorola is aware of this issue. There is an update in beta test right now so hopefully it will be out for every in the near future.
Good luck.
Is there any update to this? I am also having random reboots on 4.1.26 and 4.1.52

I noticed when my Atrix would reboot itself, it was USUALLY when GPS was in use. I know Speedtest sometimes uses GPS to determine which server to use, which might explain this? Just a guess though.

I've only had one reboot but messing with GPS caused it. Basically I went in and out of the navigation app 4 times. I can't remember why lol.
OP: Do you leave your gps on all the time? Maybe try turning it off for a day or 2 and see if that improves your situation.
Ive only had one reboot to date as well and it was also GPS related. I had just installed the update last night, and went into the app GPS status. it locked up and rebooted the phone. only time its ever happened...?
weird
I think the reboots are associated with polling.. if not polling then some underlying data send/receive issue.
i've also had about 3 random reboots in the past week, i'm currently running 4.1.57
My phone recently starts to reboot by itself too.
Running 4.1.57, rooted, and Webtop mod.
Most of the time it happens when I try to wake up the phone. The phone would not wake up and then reboot itself after a while.
At least with the update the issue is the phone randomly reboots when there is
1. Low Signal
2. Coming off wifi and unable to reconnect data.
Pretty much when the device loses the data connection and cannot reconnect it reboots. Been worse since the 1.57 update.

+1.........
when I've had random reboots, (about 2 of them since the 1.57 update) I've noticed that each time the phone was busy pulling something from teh internets, and would just jam-up. Maybe there's a buffer overload or something and the phone has to reset to clear its cache?
Then again, I know NOTHING about internets, except how to watch pr0n and dl torrents.
I too, have never had a single random reboot.
I've had 3 reboots in the past week alone. Mine usually happen at the beginning of a phone call. I'm getting sick of having to call the person back and explain that my phone just rebooted.
Anyone heard of any updates on this issue ?

[Q] Somethings eating up my RAM

Hi all;
For some reason, within the last couple of weeks, my phone has been freezing like crazy.
I uninstalled Advanced Task Killer and I use the installed Task Manager to monitor my ram usage and it's weird.
At any given time, I only have about 40-50 mb of ram left.
On average, out of 304 it shows that something is using anywhere from 230-260 mb of ram.
I shut everything down (using the task manager...shutting down level 1 and level 2) and still there is no change. I tried to not shut anything down to see if things would work themselves out, but still my ram is being eaten up.
I even went so far as to do a factory reset, hoping that this would fix the problem, but nada!
I've uninstalled every single program that I've installed within the last week or so, but still nothing.
My phone is becoming a brick and I don't know why. Next step is to call Tmobile, but seeing that my warranty is over, I"m sure that they will rape me with a replacement fee.
Any help would be most appreciated.
What rom? I'm experiencing the very same thing. Usually this happens when I've been in a rom for a very long time.
Maybe try wiping the SD card?

has anyone figured out what makes the X2 Freeze sometimes?

im wondering if it is the speed scripts? i am using eclipse 1.1 now so im going to see if that fixes it. but i have been getting the freeze when unlocking the phone, and sometimes randomly when im using the phone the screen goes 100% unresponsive...the buttons work, but nothing else...then after about a min or two it comes back..VERY annoying...
Do u reboot or clear system caches on a regular /daily basis? This may help.
Sounds like things are getting clogged up. I used to have that problem a while ago before I started rebooting once a day. Usually when I wake up and sometimes twice a day. It is healthy for an android phone to be rebooted once a day. Just plain works better.
oh this has happend right after a SBF or a reinstall of an OS, so there was not even a day on it. it happened this morning once when i unlocked the phone BUT i had that speedy script installed, i resotored from a back up before i installed that scrpit so im going to see if it happens again....i hope it is not hardware related..

I hope it isn't also.
It has only happened to me in the past like I said. It's been a long time tho((knock on wood))
I have also been running the speedy script v6 . I only made one change and that was deleting the 3gturbo entries in the one script. And I haven't had this problem yet at all. Been running for two and half days now.
has this also happened on 2.3.3? i was wondering if it was a 2.3.4 issue?
Sounds like something clogging your memory. When I start fruit ninja my x2 screen goes unresponsive for up to 20 seconds I assume its just memory management during game startup. Are you using a task killer to maximize free ram? This will cause background apps that you may have killed to restart if they are called upon. That would cause the phone to bog down temporarily
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
nope no task killers at all. i noticed using system panel i was at only 77 mb using eclipse...
My phone doesnt freeze but it does randomly reboot no matter what rom, script, length of use before a restart, or whatever.

I guess I got pretty lucky with not getting reboots.
Even before I rooted and rom'd up I think I MAY have had one random reboot. I guess I just got lucky. Basically the only major problem I have had that others have os the music skipping I used to encounter lag occasionally but since I started my daily reboot routine lag is pretty null on most occasions.

I wonder the same been using eclipse straight up except for setting the min to 216 instead of 312 never had any issues period . Might be worth getting rid of speed scripts and see if that is the issue.
2.3.4 was made pretty much to fix the lockups and reboots. It might be something with your backups. I know I just used a backup a couple days ago after giving up on upgrading to 2.3.4 and until today when I finally upgraded to 2.3.4 it was slow, laggy and unresponsive. Mind you before that last nandroid, it was working amazingly.

How Often Do You Reboot?

I was just wondering. I find that after about a week without rebooting, the phone becomes a little jittery. How often do you guys reboot?
Once in a week probably. I didn't even noticed!

If I reboot it's because I'm flashing a rom or my battery died. lol
Rarely on galaxy phones, I remember on my old galaxy s ii i kept track of my uptime for fun, reached something like 700 hours, which is like almost 30 days was amazed that the phone didnt randomly reboot or something. Samsung phones are always so stable on stock roms.

Well not exactly jerky, but sometimes i notice a just a tiny bit of jerkiness when transitioning between applications. But i guess that can happen at any given time.
Today alone its been like 16-17 times

Never unless I install a custom rom to try, haven't done for 2 weeks doesn't seem to be any problems with performance.

If you have Battery Problems Please read!

A couple of months ago I installed the AOKP ICS rom Then JB and found it about as good as you could want, but this is not about how good the rom is. I have been flashing a couple of years and know enough to get by. As much as I loved the rom i was almost ready to flash back to stock because I was unable to get any battery life. I would always use at least 8% at night and up to 15% during the day. I just couldn't understand how so many people were saying they were getting great battery life. I went through all the posts and tried every option i could find, watching wakelocks every time I picked up the phone, changing my router settings, turning off everything on the phone that made it a great phone. When I originally installed ICS I did a total factory reset, cleared all cashes. Spent hours reading everything I could find about battery life problems. When i flashed JB it was the same thing. I have been flashing the updates every week. Clearing everything every time.
Last night i was about done and figured I would try this one more time. I downloaded the rom and Gapps again, but this time i did a factory reset 3 times and cleared the cashes 3 times. Then when the system was installed I downloaded clean apps from the the Play store. I installed everything normal, all sync settings on, the phone is set up just like you would want it with full functional apps. This morning I woke up and checked the battery and it was down 2% for 5hrs! That is the best I have ever seen and I think about all you could ask for. The history had no wake locks, No awake times when the phone was sleeping. Now at 10 hrs and and 5 hrs of lite use I am at 82% and still no wake locks or anything unexpected by any apps like I always had before. Google Now is running, sync is on, like I said the phone is set up normal not everything shut off.
I am not saying that you need to clear everything 3 , 4 or 10 times when you flash a rom or not use TI to restore your Apps. What I am saying is, if after flashing a rom you are not getting good battery life or you are having any strange lock ups with your phone THEN start from scratch and make sure every app on your phone is perfect. BTW my phone was getting terrible battery life but working as smooth as butter all the time. I didint have to wait 3 battery cycles to get get 10 hrs out of my phone, it worked as I said from the start. If you phone isn't doing as good as other people are and your not expecting to get 2 days with 10 hrs of screen time, Clean out everything and start over, esp on a Rom like AOKP, these phones should work GREAT and it only takes one bad app to kill things.
So listen to the developers and clean house if things aren't right !!!!!!! It takes more time at first but over the last 2 months I have spent about 10 times more trying to fix the phone.
Do some of you other users get 8+ hours of screen on time? I got my i777 around launch time and I don't think I have seen over 4hrs of screen on time. I have tried a lot of different ROMs, like aokp, shoshock2, and currently cm10, and my general consensus is 3+ hours is good.

Never seen 8 hours with stock battery. Max I have gotten is 5 and a half. I could probably get more on Shostock but I was on AOKP JB
I'm going to have to do this tonight. I'm really not looking forward to it though because I've been trying to unlock things in Fruit Ninja but I want to get this thing working right so that's how it goes.

Just back up data
im going to try this, i was using the wipe 3 or 4 times method when i had a sony x10 phone a year ago and it seemed to make a difference.
aokp is a really great rom and on the previous version my phone could last a full 24 hours (about 9 of those hours probbaly not really any use)
latest version the battery is a bit trippy for me so im going to try this and i wont be surprised if this is all true.
thanks!
Just an update. 16 hrs, 1 hr screen 69% battery left.
To SteveO I would not restore any apps you have with a backup. If you do the complete wipe it seems that the Play store actually downloaded all the Apps fresh on its own. I think that may have something to do with really getting a clean plate. I have wiped many times and only one other time did the Play store auto load my apps.
I also recommend wiping internal and external storage everynow and then. Backup pics, music and the such

I had a feeling that's what you meant, to NOT restore a back up.
As for the "auto load" from the Play store, are you referring to when it asks you on start up if I want to restore my apps from Google Play you're suggesting I say yes, correct? Is that what you did?
I was planning on making a list of what's on my phone now and manually downloading each one and installing.

So what's the point here?
In order to get great (or better in this case) battery life of AOKP, do
1. wipe 3 times
2. install and run one of the clean app from Google Play. Which app, actually?
For some reason, I "feel" that after performing TB backups (user data backups), the battery life gets worse.
There really isnt any "point". I was just letting others know what i did to GREATLY increase my battery life. I dont think it has anything to dowith this ROM. I think if you flash any Rom and your not happy with the Battery life it may be a bad apk that doesnt get cleaned out with the normal route.
I advise installing ALL your apps clean, not any one.
I mentioned that the PLAY store automatically offered to reinstall all my apps after this clean wipe. Other times i have flashed it didnt do this so it makes me think that for some reason something doesnt really get cleared as we think it should, again no expert, only telling what i found after about 20 Rom flashes over the last couple of years.

I just had a really good test of this procedure. My usb port crapped out so I returned my phone for a warranty replacement.
My old handset has been laggy since upgrading to Jelly Bean. I'd always restore apps through Tibu, only restored data on a few apps.
Fresh clean I777 stock Sammy, runs smooth on ICS.
Newly rooted, AOKP 11/9, basic GAPPS and the same Tibu restore => laggy.
So I factory reset, wiped everything including internal storage, let Play restore my apps, input all the app data manually, and this phone is smooth.
