Thanks and a few questions - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have just picked up my Galaxy S2 which WAS locked to 3 UK.
However I followed this handy video from GIFGAF
Once I have install the insecure Kernal = GT-I9100_XWLA4_insecure - THANK YOU
Then Rooted the device - THANK YOU lyriquidperfection
I tried my SIM but the phone was still locked. I then downloaded an app called Galaxy S Unlock and it unlcoked my phone.
Should my phone have unlocked after I rooted the insecure kernal or was I ment to do it as above?
My phone was original on 3 uk and is heavely branded with a splash screen on boot up and apps thats cant be removed. Does anyone know how I can remove this branding?

flash another firmware http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928

Hi,
Thanks for that but form the looks of that list they are all branded. Do you know where I can get the unbranded Samsung version?

I would recommend you to do a nandroid backup with the stock rom before you flash another one. It's not a huge deal, just nice to have around. And you can use titanium backup to get rid of the bloatware and backup apps

Go to www.sammobile.com and download a stock firmware and flash through Odin. Do not use repartition or pit files and you should be fine.
Edit : can you get to cwm recovery?

Make sure that you have the drivers installed and kies is completely closed. You might have to go into task manager on the computer and close anything that has kies in it.
And I'm sure sammobile has the unbranded firmware on it's site

kilometers4 you out there?
I have a few questions and I think you have the set up that Iam trying to achieve.
The ROM that I have uploaded after your help I have been playing about with the phone and its definitely for me. This is really the first real play about I have had with Android.
However if has allot of Vodafone software / programs installed that I cant remove. Can you recommend a good ROM that is carrier software free and is compatible with any Android updates?
Accessories
Thinking about getting the following
Original Samsung 2000mah battery
Hard case with a flip stand that can take the larger battery
I have also got myself a USB JIG ready just incase
What are you thoughts

Sorry, just got out of the hospital..
I'm personally on Rootbox jellybean. It's carrier free and light (sounds like you like it light)
But with that being said, you can debloat (get rid of the carrier apps) with titanium backup. You can delete or even freeze apps (freezing is making the app not show in the app drawr and make it inactive). You just need to root the firmware you're on.
And I personally chose a set of two anker 1900mah batteries with an external wall charger. It doesn't require a bigger back and it basically triples the battery life

Yes I do like it light!!
Is Titanium Back the same sort of software as CWM which I have installed on my SD card?
Have you got a link for it?
I had noticed you had the anker 1900mah batteries which I had looked at but iam not to confident about buying batteries from ebay.
Can You charge the battery in the phone or do you have to charge it on the dock which means take it out of the phone each time?

I'm having the same problem and I'm with Orange. You do have to get your phone unlocked unless you intend to get new Provider Firmware. Also I'm a noob so I'm a little uneasy about trying to unlock the Ace myself, I'd rather take it into the shop. Plus I'm told it has to be physically unlocked by USB. Paying for codes online does not work and in my case even the so called Temporary Unlocks do not work.
Have you figured out the letter codes? Maybe you could help me find an alternative Orange firmware? I'm running Gingerbread BVKQA.
Hope this helps

I will still be using a tmobile sim in the phone?

Funny thing, I have the exact same Ace from Orange. I rooted it, first went from 2.2 to 2.3.4 and now I updated it to 2.3.5. Looking for a custom rom to flash it with but I've never gotten that far with customization so I'm not too sure. Thinking of replacing the boot animation to the nexus one's. Looks pretty epic ;D

I think so... but I am just going by what other threads and other forums have said. I'm not sure it will brick it, but it won't be up to snuff that's for sure. I haven't been on XDA long but I've had some invaluable help from EmoBoiix3 along the way. It's a name worth searching. He wrote the Newbie Guide at the start of the Galaxy Ace forum. Seems to know his onions!

Same.
After umming and erring about it I finally snapped up the courage to root via Superoneclick. Downloaded Kies. Hooked up. And like yourself I went to 2.3.4 which is where I seem to be in a bit of a rut.
My phone is still network locked - haven't the balls to try unlocking myself - but that is my next priority in the next couple of days via the High Street Unlock Shops. Until then I cannot try out any fancy ROMs.
Also, dunno what the hell I've done to the phone but the infamous upd_1.zip no longer appears to work for rooting now!!!!
I'm curious, how did you get to 2.3.5? And is your phone unlocked?
Phone T Mobile and asked for unlock code, got it free!

I'm pretty sure it's unlocked now since the Orange animation thing is gone from the boot screen. I got 2.3.5 by updating through Odin from androidadvices.com. I'm not sure if that unlocks it though but I believe it is. It says you can't update with the phone locked to the carrier and I did it anyway and worked when I went from 2.2 to 2.3.4. Not sure if I just got lucky or something. You should give it a try.

SuperAce609 - Not sure how you managed it but well done. I'm thinking my next step should be to get new firmware. European KPH I think. Apparently it is compatible with most ROMs available to the Ace. Been advised to steer clear of Cyanogen though (pity!) as it isn't official or stable enough for Ace.

Yeah! And I was so exited to try it out too! I'm thinking of changing it to the Honeycomb theme but I'm not too sure. And since there isn't a version compatible with the 2.3.5 I have on, I can't do it . Besides, since I switch themes a lot, knowing my self, I'd probably be switching from rom to rom and that sounds like too much work xD

[Q] Benefits of branded firmware?

Evening chaps,
Got my Galaxy S3 from Phones4u last week so the phone was unbranded. Now the question I have is what benefits would I get if I flashed the O2 branded firmware on it instead?
Normally I would just wipe it and put a custom ROM on and never touch branded firmware, but with the S3 the software seems to be spot on.
What's everybody's view on this?
IMO there are no benefit to a Branded Fw just more bloat to slow the phone down

I was thinking the same, but I was wondering if they messed with the radios etc to make it work better with their network. Might give it a go and see what extras I can get.
the only benefit is that u can give that phone to yo girl ... who dsnt mess up the beast with root and stuff

O2 bookmarks O2 Arena Wallpaper otherwise zero .
Wait for updates from O2 when and if they update the firmware .
They dont mess with radio >> Modems can be flashed individually on stock rom from the modem thread .
O2 rolling out Fast Dormancy in the south of UK FD on off app now available on the market .
Google fast dormancy .

(Nearly) all radios are linked in a thread in the General section of the forum.
You can always backup your radio before going to full-stock and flash your radio anew. Radio is a different Processor/SoC than the phone itself so the Radio firmware can be completely different to your phone's.
Altough you should get a backup of the network's FastDormancy settings to make sure they are properly configured in the final version.
the only benefit is that u can give that phone to yo girl ... who dsnt mess up the beast with root and stuff

My gf likes the firmware original, because she wants to tinker around and flash it all by herself
But you seem to imply that flashing a non-original firmware always includes Root, which is certainly not true for the Samsung-original firmwares without carrier-branding.

I am looking for a copy of correct firmware too. If I can find it I will let you know, please do the same for me. My phone is not bricked but wanna have a backup plan before I start flashing anything. You can take your phone back and tell them the battery went dead and once you got it charged and turned it on it started doing this. CSpire employees are dumb, they won't know any better and will replace your device. I know from experience. I bricked my buddies Milestone X2 while trying to unlock it's bootloader. He took it to the store the next day and they replaced it for free.

[Q] Second-hand Bell i9100m to stock

A friend of a friend was giving us a lift today, and she asked if we could turn on navigation on her phone since she was in the middle of driving. Her phone is a Galaxy S II, definitely i9100 and not the other variants (4.3" not 4.5", physical home button). She was running it on Telus but she bought it second-hand a few weeks ago so I assume it was a Bell or Virgin model.
Anyway I could see from afar that it was most definitely still running Gingerbread, and I wondered why it hadn't gotten the ICS update. I asked if I could see the phone and I went to the About screen - it's running 2.3.6, and the build number says Super ROM. Then I looked in her app drawer and saw Superuser. She is not the type who knows how to root a phone or would even want to, so the likely explanation is that the seller had installed a custom ROM and neglected to revert it before sale.
I've never owned an i9100... If she were to ask for help returning it to stock, would the simplest way just be to flash the Bell ICS ROM using Odin? Are there any precautions I'd need to take in case something the last owner had installed would be incompatible with the flash?

To be clear, she is a non power user. The ideal ROM for her is whatever would've been on there by now if it had never been hacked. So I believe that'd be ICS.

and i assume you know where too get that and yes flash in odin the stock version either from here you can get it or samfilmware ics version for 19100m
cheers
Thanks!
Actually I should add... The SuperROM she had on there said the device was i9100G. Is it possible that's just because it's what it says in the ROM, and it's still really an i9100m? Cause now I see they have different processors...

Hey. You better first make sure that the Galaxy S unlock tool isn't there, otherwise that's how the seller sim-unlocked the phone. Putting it on ics may lock it back up but you can unlock it again. If you move it to jellybean though, the unlock tool doesn't work yet. Ics is good enough for her.

Hey I'm also looking to update my phone and I'm sort of in the same situation as this girl. I bought my phone second hand and found out later that it was rooted and has CyanogenMod 7.1 on it. My model is the I9100 and my provider is Telus. I was looking to update it to CM10, but one of my concerns is that it might get locked again and I won't be able to use my phone on Telus. Should I just settle for CM9? Will it for sure get locked again? I'm a noob.

Presumably if it's genuinely an i9100G and not m (I'm not sure, as I only saw the phone once), it wasn't from a Canadian carrier. In which case who knows how it was unlocked.

[Q] Sudden battery drain in 2-3 hrs and wifi not scanning

Hi Guys! I am using Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100G INDIA model. After more than one year of use suddenly it started working weird.
1. Full 100% charging getting discharged to 0% in 2-3 hrs(99% phone is put on standby mode - not using for anything)
2. When I enable WiFi it is not able to scan. I repeatedly clicked on scan but it is not showing any progress of scanning and not listing my home WiFi network
I have tried:
1. Battery recalibration - no use
2. Factory reset - no use
3. Hard reset - no use
Can somebody help me with this? Is there a way to check that WiFi chip failed or not Or it's an issue with firmware(4.1.2)?

I went to service center to know about the issue. He was just re-installed stock ROM by rooting the device even not hearing to my problem. When I say WIFI scanning is not working he turned on WiFi and was saying it's working. But I told him to let the phone scan for any WiFi hotspots close by(My friend phone SIII able to list all available hotspots). He then pressed scan and was saying motherboard was gone. Is that true? How can he say blindly even not checking until I tell him to check the WiFi.
If I need to change the motherboard how much does it costs in INDIA? and does it carries any warranty?

I went to service center to know about the issue. He was just re-installed stock ROM by rooting the device even not hearing to my problem. firstly, you should be rooted to change the baseband.
If you are rooted that find any compatible baseband of your rom version and flash the zip file through recovery.
As far as the motherboard is concerned, it is costly affair. Before coming to the conclusion of motherboard being damaged, lets first try all possible options. I don't see the motherboard issue here.
PM me your rom details and i will find a baseband for you.

No luck WIFI not working... seems motherboard issue
Can we buy motherboard separately in India? Does it carries any warranty?

No, I am planning to go for samsung service center and get the motherboard replaced. When I called them they confirmed that motherboard will carry 3 months warranty. So, I thought it's better to go for warranty piece.

My advise wud be to see some local repair shop as it might be a loose connection and would not need the replacement. No harm in getting it checked as he will not ask more than 200-300 rs. If still u find it did not work go for motherboard replacement from samsung.
Btw how much did they asked you for motherboard
