Evening chaps,
Got my Galaxy S3 from Phones4u last week so the phone was unbranded. Now the question I have is what benefits would I get if I flashed the O2 branded firmware on it instead?
Normally I would just wipe it and put a custom ROM on and never touch branded firmware, but with the S3 the software seems to be spot on.
What's everybody's view on this?
IMO there are no benefit to a Branded Fw just more bloat to slow the phone down

I was thinking the same, but I was wondering if they messed with the radios etc to make it work better with their network. Might give it a go and see what extras I can get.
the only benefit is that u can give that phone to yo girl ... who dsnt mess up the beast with root and stuff

O2 bookmarks O2 Arena Wallpaper otherwise zero .
Wait for updates from O2 when and if they update the firmware .
They dont mess with radio >> Modems can be flashed individually on stock rom from the modem thread .
O2 rolling out Fast Dormancy in the south of UK FD on off app now available on the market .
Google fast dormancy .

(Nearly) all radios are linked in a thread in the General section of the forum.
You can always backup your radio before going to full-stock and flash your radio anew. Radio is a different Processor/SoC than the phone itself so the Radio firmware can be completely different to your phone's.
Altough you should get a backup of the network's FastDormancy settings to make sure they are properly configured in the final version.

My gf likes the firmware original, because she wants to tinker around and flash it all by herself
But you seem to imply that flashing a non-original firmware always includes Root, which is certainly not true for the Samsung-original firmwares without carrier-branding.

Now that the SGS II is available in KSA, it's still not arabized, any idea when they'll release an update for that?
Another thing; since it's available in English version, does it have the hubs (game and music)???
Thanx in advance...
Officially available from samsung dealer?? because if its officially from samsung dealer it should support arabic.
I've been told that it's sold in carrefour and hyper, dunno if it's available in samsung stores yet!

I love this phone!!
I got the phone 2 days ago
All i have to say is that i adoooooore this magnificent device!
Stock rom is perfect, updated the cam firmware and working good now. No hardware issues as mentioned by other users, maybe i'm lucky
The hubs are in there but music hub is not supported in the country.
Doesn't have the arabic support, dunno if i should root to enable it thru Madmack's fix or wait for the original stock update.
Overall, best phone i ever owned!!

Weird in which way they have released it .... Re forum 2.3.4 don't you have to root to get it ? instead of kieselguhr ? And if you do update how do you stand with warranty ?
No stock Samsung rom is a flash via Odin nothing to do with root ,

Not much of a change with 2.3.4 people have been flashing the non official 2.3.4 firmware via Odin for almost a month now.
And the way things are going samsung may not include gtalk video otherwise I dont see much differnece between the two.
If you are itchy to get it you can always flash the unofficial ones .. INTRATECH has got quite of them non wipe if you do wish.
I thought it would bring changes:< better battery life and more speed plus less bugs (don't know why I need more speed s2 is Mega fast anyway) .... has android run out of ideas? I don't know if 3d is a gimick but I might have to go this way only thing which puts me off is just experience with the sensation it was awful hence me getting s2
I am frightened of bricking my phone hence why I don't like the idea of non official....

with 2.3.4 roms i couldnt tell if it was faster at all
but the KF3 rom(2.3.3) had more battery life than the KG rom (2.3.4)
dont be scared of bricking
after rooting ur phone once and getting CWM
ull almost never need to use Odin again
just use your own phone to flash new roms
but if you want to stay legit just update using Kies
Not seeing a FOTA update to 2.3.4 on my sensation.
kg5 was officially released at least two weeks ago in Poland and is available by kies, so what is the problem again?

Well for starters it is official Samsung firmware not something cooked up .
Two its almost impossible to brick SGS2 ( almost )
Three the method to update to stock is relatively simple and phone still covered under Samsungs warranty .
Four you wait not for Samsung to release the firmware upgrade but the phone provider to accept that update and upload or not to Kies as the official update method .
Five XDA Developers forum is a bit useless if its all Kies updates .

Oh apparently HTC has released it in some regions this morning.... So this automatically means Samsung should release it too because all firmware updates should be synchronous. I don't see the reasoning behind your post, maybe you would care to explain.
I was asking cos HTC are the worst for updating firmware and they are quick with 2.3.4 I hate some of the attitudes on this forum I asked a simple question and am glad there are some polite people out there
Thank you to the polite people who responded.....
I shall wait to see when Samsung release in the uk.... i don't want to jump ship from s2 to evidence 3d so hopefully Samsung won't let us down

Well i think HTC release of updates are more worldwide and all almost together. Samsung is like different times for different countries and if you have branded one is even more difficult to have an update quickly.
I'm glad I'm unbranded it's strange how they release em seem to go from one side of the world then back to one European country then to the tother. Will wait for the uk to get it

Samsung are only on test rom ICE so far .
2.3.6 update may depend upon your carrier and in your case you have to ask 3 .

I have to say I feel the same I use to change my roms on my desire all the time but never felt the need too on the s2? and today one of the girls in work updates her S2 to 2.3.5 voda branded and my none branded is stuck with 2.3.4, what is that all about??? I benched the 2 side by side today fresh reboot and the voda scored 3600+ on quad and mine only 3200+ not happy with that and TBH I have nothing at all installed on mine!!
HTC never let branded phones get firmware first or is this a play from the carriers now paying to get updates first hmm I wonder.
I did have a look at upgrading to that 2.3.6 rom via odin but still not sure about doing it.
I would just like them all to just get the updates out and stop messing, that is what Android is all about. Just let us do the messing with the phones.

Also I would be happy to root and run a custom rom on my s2 I have messed around with phones for years going back to the old Nokia 6600 days and a few before that, also my HTC desire that was changed almost daily, but I feel that the S2 is a solid phone as standard (IMO)

Why do they do this ? isn't this just a massive hassle for Samsung etc with all the diff updates they have to work on, test & put out ?
Seems more like "not so smart phones" to me.

However if has allot of Vodafone software / programs installed that I cant remove. Can you recommend a good ROM that is carrier software free and is compatible with any Android updates?

Thinking about getting the following
Original Samsung 2000mah battery
Hard case with a flip stand that can take the larger battery
I have also got myself a USB JIG ready just incase

Sorry, just got out of the hospital..
I'm personally on Rootbox jellybean. It's carrier free and light (sounds like you like it light)
But with that being said, you can debloat (get rid of the carrier apps) with titanium backup. You can delete or even freeze apps (freezing is making the app not show in the app drawr and make it inactive). You just need to root the firmware you're on.
And I personally chose a set of two anker 1900mah batteries with an external wall charger. It doesn't require a bigger back and it basically triples the battery life

Is Titanium Back the same sort of software as CWM which I have installed on my SD card?
Have you got a link for it?
I had noticed you had the anker 1900mah batteries which I had looked at but iam not to confident about buying batteries from ebay.
Can You charge the battery in the phone or do you have to charge it on the dock which means take it out of the phone each time?

Just to let you know that as long as the Rom/Firmware is for the the I9300 then you can flash it to your device no matter what country it is for.
So for example if the official firmware was for Poland and your device was in the UK then you can flash it.
Hope this clears things up for you.

So that each country has a reason to withhold your warranty if you're found to run a firmware version they don't associate themselves with. I mean, when I had my Gnex, I ran a british firmware on a nordic phone, with a US modem and all worked superbly.
On this GS3, I've run everything from Russian to Egyptian and my phone has never once failed me.

But still, for example, they can have 1 official rom to all unbranded I9300 instead of releasing one by one for each country... This will be less stressful for them and for us (always waiting for an official release for our country)
I wonder what is really their reason...
" Why do we have different firmware for each country?"
Because your phone / provider relationship is country specific (I use an SGS3 i9300 on a T-Mobile UK contract for example) providers (try to) ensure phone / provider / country specific set-ups.
They justify this on the grounds of providing tailored maintenance and support based on known and controlled configurations.
....it works for the masses....not for us more troublesome and independent minded users in the XDA and other communities
