[Q] Rookie question, struggling to find the answer - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
Bit of a rookie question that's always been a mystery to me on Samsung phones.
When you install a completely fresh stock rom via Odin, does it wipe the cache partitions also? Like a total clean wipe.
Usually I would just go into CWM and do it from there but i''ve been keeping it all stock until the final version of Jellybean comes out.

Yes stock Odin flash is really the same as a wipe or format .

Updating to new firmware/kernel

Hey all so after I update my firmware to XWKK5 do I have to wipe everything while in recovery mode is it really necessary?
What do you want to achieve with deleting all from recovery?
If you've upgraded, then the phone is in the version upgraded. If you delete all from recovery, you have to reinstall the entire ROM or the phone wont boot...
Thought I had to Wipe Data / factory reset and Wipe Cache Partition?

Instructions are to be followed .
Custom roms usually ask for wipe but not stock roms .

You don't need to do that if you are upgrading from a Stock ROM. If you chose the wipe version of ROM for flashing then it'll automatically wipe you device. If you use non-wipe it'll upgrade and everything remains same.
Wipe is only recommended when you are switchin from Custom to Stock or vice-versa else after a version downgrade say KK5 to KJ3.
Hope it helped.

[Q] Clearing Dalvik on stock?

Quick question, what is the correct and easiest way to clear the Dalvik cache on stock? I updated to ICS from GB and want to clean the Dalvik.
Thanks.

Just flash one of Chainfires CF-Root kernels through ODIN and boot into clockwork recovery then run the Clear Dalvik option. Job done.
But of course you no longer have stock as you have changed the kernel .
Update would have wiped it anyway .

JJ is correct, if it was an official update through kies then don't worry about it. I would only bother about Dalvik if you start to get flash happy with custom ROMS.
cheers guys, i guess if it wiped during the flash then no worries

[Q] How to remove a ROM so I can flash with a different ROM?

I flashed my S2 yesterday with CheckROM and I like it and everything but I'd like to try MIUI today but I'm not sure how I would go about this? I think I may have to wipe my phone (already have a backup from before I flashed with CheckROM) and then just install MIUI like I did CheckROM? Correct me if there is another way or I'm wrong.
Just go into clock work recovery, wipe data cache, flash miui.

By formats system do you mean wipes everything or just cache?
Let's see.......
You wipe data, cache but your phone can boot, because the OS remains.
You wipe system OS got removed, you can't boot phone.
Wiping system is the cleanest flash you can do.

I9100 back to stock

Hi I have installed Cyanogenmod 10 custom rom some time ago, but now I want to update to official 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Will it be enough to format everything in CWM and just flash the stock 4.1.2 through Odin?
Yes. Go ahead.
So a factory reset and formatting the system will be enough?

[Q] Wipes (simple question, almost anybody can answer)

When wiping everything before installing new rom/update, is it necessary to wipe data/factory for full performance or may i not wipe and keep all apps? Is that possible?
I hope you can understand and sorry for my bad argentinian english!
No its not possible and you should wipe data/factory reset cause if you dont you will get into bootloop

Not necessarily.
@OP: it's always the best to wipe phone before installing new rom, however.. if it's update of same rom, then it's mostly not needed to do full wipe..
if you install rom same type (like 2 stock based roms or 2 CM based roms) sometime you can go without wiping.
