Wow! i was thinking of getting the Hero but now that i know i cant use 3g. i dont want it n more...
I have a question though! im getting rid of my g1 and getting an htc magic from ebay!
Spec For Magic:
rom: 512mb
Ram: 288MB
Specs For G1:
Ram: 192MB
i want to have the Hero port on it. i currently have it on my g1 but its still a bit laggy and i dont have any widgets... whats the point???
so if i get the magic which has the same specs as the HTC Hero will the rom run fast with no lag at all cosidering it has 90Mb+ more ram than the g1???

If you buy from T-mobile in UK, it should work in the US. I was told they use the same 1700/2100 bands that we do. Only Hero 100 has the 1700 band built in, so the regular Hero will not work for US 3G.
not quite.
All UK networks use the 2100 band. None of them use the 1700.
You'll have to wait and see if the american version out later in the year supports the ridiculous t-mob US bands.
UPDATE: HAve checked, and yes, the Hero100 IS the european version, cos thats what the one i have in my hand is. it has 900/2100 3G bands. NO 1700 at all.
The US version is the hero 130, which will have the 850 and 1900 that everyone GSM but T-mobile uses. again, no 1700.

What's sad is that I would rather use the Hero, relying on EDGE and Wi-Fi than to resort to using the iPhone... LOL

That's correct...... about UK networks. no 1700.
T-mobile is getting the Hero next year so will it go to AT&T or other operators first?
To the OP... the Magic that you are getting off ebay.... well that will be the same thing.... 3G won't work in the US unless you wait till Sept./Oct. when T-Mo US releases it.
I don't care much for 3G, it's a battery killer and I'm usually near wifi.
EDGE ftw!
As others have noted, Hero will only work on edge until the north american version with the 850/1900 3g bands are added.
Also, tmobile has recently said as of right now they have no future plans to release the hero.

That's something so stupid I cannot understand. Hero is awesome! It's like they want to sell less phones and have less customers. I would definitely buy one.. instead, I might have to get an unlocked UK one since I don't plan to change my carrier even if it comes to At&t US or Sprint.

So, since I was misinformed by T-Mo, I have a question of my own:
Will you be able to add the 1700 band with a software update, or does that require a hardware update through the mfg?
T-mobile AWS 3G using 1700 band will need hardware in the Hero to receive 1700 band. T-mo is making a big mistake here, they should go to hTc and get them to make a version of the HERO that would work with the T-mo 3G.

So then T-Mobile would have both the Hero and the nearly feature-identical Magic at the same time? As much as I would have wished T-Mo to carry the Hero (very), the FCC passed the Hero with the AT&T 3G bands anyway.

That's exactly what I was going to recommend, its $500 cad and $20 to unlock it. You just need someone from Canada to buy and ship it.
I have had the g1 for some time now and its gettin pretty rough around the edges. I was wondering if it was possible to get a Hero in the U.S. and what service it would work under? thanks !
it would work under any GSM Carrier in the US! However 3G will not work on any carrier just edge...Have you tried ebay, ill sell you mine if you want! One week old.
you can buy it off expansys usa

however as you can see under the description it says "US 3G Data: No"
AT&T 3g
Looking into upgrading my at&t 8525 tytn which is due for an upgrade (close to getting an iphone 3gs 'til I found HERO). Any update or news on another release that would work in 3g?
I've spent hours searching ebay, amazon, expansys, etc. all of them only run HSDPA/UMTS 900 2100.
Is there an app to add 1900 for it to run on AT&T 3g or is that a ROM or hardware issue?
Thanks in advance.

You can't magically add 1900 to it, it's a hardware thing. The Euro versions have 2100, so the best you're going to get is EDGE on AT&T or T-Mo USA. You'd think that the UNLOCKED model would be at least 1900/2100 HSDPA or something!!!
The Sprint-bound CDMA version is..well...CDMA, so not compatible with AT&T as well.
man, that sucks. is att usa the only country using 1900? that's another sucky one

Nope Rogers/Fido in Canada the only GSM provider here has the same Frequencies as AT&T.
just baught a unlock hero today, and i love it... you dont need 3g... =]
OK done some checking here and did not find a thread about this so I will ask.
I am not the most technical guy but I did manage to successfully unlock my rogers x10a and root it from the x10a to x10i. I was under the impression that if rooted to x10i I would be able to use this phone with Wind. The issue is that wind uses aws 1700/2100 frequency which I read that x10i supports and if rooted would enable those frequencies.
Most of what I have read has been mixed. Some claim they have their rogers x10a working on the wind network after rooting to x10i and some say it won't work.
For me it does not work. I put in my Wind sim card and all I can get is Wind Away and not Wind Home. I am not sure if the reason is it can't be done or I am missing a step somewhere. I know the apn setting but entering them and saving them made no difference.
I would just like to know if its possible and if anyone has been successful using there x10 with Wind?

Hey gmaronski,
As long as it supports the AWS 1700/2100 frequency it will work. By looking at the specs from www.gsmarena.com it appears that it should work. The mini and mini pro look like they would not though. Hope this helps.
Have a great day.

I have this phone on Wind. There are two versions of this phone, x10a (Rogers) and x10i (rest of the world), and as long as you get an x10i, it will work on Wind.
Sorry bad news.
Wind operates on UMTS Band 4 which is known as AWS and operates 1700up / 2100 down. Don't be confused by the 2100 when looking at phone specs, this is a 1700 band. When 2100 is mentioned in phone specs it means Band 1 which is knows as IMT.
X10A supports Bands 1, 2, 5, 6 (2100, 1900, 850, 800)
X10I supports bands 1, 4, 8 (2100, 1700, 900)
Wind is soley band 4, so if you want to have Wind service you will need an X10I.
Changing firmware to X10I WILL NOT change your phone to x10i, this is determined by a hardware chip on the phone, changing software will not change this.
Thanks for the explanation
OK that seems logical to me. Its very confusing though when you read comments like this.

Carrier:Windbasically the x10i is running on the bands of "HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100" and the x10a (north american version) is running on the bands of "HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 / 800" now what you can do is flash an x10a with an x10i's firmware and vise versa and that firmware will activate the 1700 band on an x10a if you get what I mean. the radios are interchangeable on each models. for example i've got an x10i and flashed it to an x10a now i'm able to get 3G with Rogers rather than 3G on WIND with the 1700 band because now the phone is acting like its an x10a.
This guy is saying flashing the firmware activates the bands needed for wind. I wish people would know what they are talking about before they write these stupid comments.
X10a does not work with wind. Even if you flash a x10a with the x10i firmware. An x10a will not work with wind. Unless you physically change the antenna on the x10a with the x10i antenna.

Yes I know from personal experience and Balur's and your comments reinforced it. I was only hoping I was wrong. Guess I will stay with fido for this Phone and Wind for my HTC.
Thanks for the comments.
it is possible to flash software and activate AWS.But I am not sure on X10

For the xperia ion if you SIM unlock it then flash the i version stock ftf, it unlocks bands blocked by att.

So ive been browsing around google and searching. I know usually unlocked gsm phones cant work if trying to use it on a cdma network like sprint and verizon. Im currently on sprint and was wondering if the z ultra LTE version can work through sprints network? I came across this http://www.mobicity.com/sony-xperia-z-ultra-4g-lte-c6833.html if you look in the recommended network it also says sprint on there. Was this a miss type or is this true? If its true..probably thinking of purchasing one to use for sprint.

Your safest bet would be the C6806. It's duel band LTE. so has frequencies that work on AT&T as well as T-Mobile.
Do you know what frequencies they use? Then you can work out what verizon or sprint uses

To make this clear for people here in the US.
C6806 is the North America version with the LTE/GSM bands needed for USA.
The C6806 comes in two versions
1) GPe - http://www.expansys-usa.com/sony-z-ultra-google-play-edition-unlocked-lte-16gb-black-263504/
2) non-GPe - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875212288
Make your choice.
Wont the c6833 work on any carrier except t-mobile? Not in the US so have not really looked at it.

It will work on T-Mobile and AT&T for GSM talk and 3G data.
It will also work on T-Mobile for LTE for their 1700/2100 bands and the 1900 refarming.
It does not work on AT&T's 700 Mhz LTE, their main LTE band.
Neither will work on T-Mobile's future band 29 - 700 Mhz Lower D and E

Other than that, especially as of late, ROM support is getting way better. Actually I think this is the best it's ever been since it's release! I've had my C6833 since 10/01/2013 - right after launch and I've been getting LTE from Straight Talk over AT&T network from day one. Don't let anyone tell you if you decide to grab C6833 that you won't be able to get 4G LTE or the upcoming XLTE. The C6833 is compatible with XLTE and is XLTE ready.
If your worried about having no flash for taking pictures there are 2 solutions. Something called iBlazr remedies the lack of a physical camera flash. What many don't know or simply don't want to acknowledge is this beast does in fact decent low light pix! But I didn't purchase this for taking pictures anyway so it's not an issue for me.
Check out the article by The Verge it's pretty much spot on for everything except for one sticking point. YOU CAN FIT THIS BEST INTO FRONT PANTS POCKETS. PERIOD. I do it everyday. The one thing I'd want to know though is what kind of idiot would put this beast in their back pocket anyway? They'd be begging for trouble no matter what device they chose and probably deserve their damaging their device anyhoo.

Avoid the C6833 if you live in the US, no reason to get it when a better version is available.

AT&T has LTE on multiple bands 700 MHz, 1700/2100 Mhz, 1900 Mhz, 850 Mhz
If people want to use LTE in the most places, a phone with 700 Mhz is required as its the most commonly used one by them.
The lower frequency will provide service in buildings where higher frequencies don't where they have multiple bands in the same location.
I picked one up too from Expansys. I have no idea why I bought it except for the fact that its almost half the price and its a GPe phone. So far in a day I have found the speaker to be not loud enough (its not silent but its not loud enough for me), its too big and I am really having a hard time to figure out how to carry it. Battery life is still settling in so can't say if its good or bad. How do you guys carry this phone in jeans pocket? I am 527 Levi person and there is no way I could fit this thing in the front pocket.

I agree, the speaker is pretty poor.
I carry it in my front jeans pocket no problem, tall jeans.

I, too, got one from expansys about a week ago and is still getting use to use it as my daily driver. the screen res is great and the performance is awesome. I agree the speaker's volume is way too low, but that's something that i can live with. My only concern is the lack of support for the GPe model. Kind of make me wish i bought the Sony version instead.
But overall i am happy with it and it somewhat fits in my jeans front pocket, albeit it makes sitting down very uncomfortable. Though, since I live in so cal i just wear shorts and sandals on most weekends, so i guess i can also live with the size of this beast.

If Google will update GPE devices to 'L' release than they are probably better than Sony versions. Not sure if Sony will keep updating a fringe device for 'L' versions of android.

Google Play edition devices
Updates to Google Play edition devices are managed by the device manufacturers, not by Google. Google works closely with the manufacturers to provide system updates shortly after a new version is released. Once an update is available, it can take up to two weeks for it to reach your device.
Devices may not receive the latest version of Android if they fall outside of the update window, traditionally around 18 months after a device release.
