im going to send it back in a week if no one came up with a solution..

Check for dust on the connectors.
I had a tiny speck of dust on my dock connector that stopped it from charging, but still registered that it was connected.

its not about the plug.. even with the dock its not charging..

im pretty sure now that its a software issue.. .i just need a little juice to reinstall another rom.. thats all i wish for.

I had a similar issue, I could only charge through the dock, not with charger directly plugged into the tablet. I RMA`d it two times but the useless service tech sent it back claiming he found nothing wrong. What fixed it for me was opening the prime and switching off the power to the motherboard for about ten seconds. There is a small flip switch inside that does this. Some say that holding in the pinhole reset button for 30 seconds will do the same, and it`s definately worth a try. Also of course I would first of all try another charger as they have been known to fry.
Like you I was convinced it was software because it happened immediately after the .21 ota update and nothing else had changed.
Best of luck!

That`s one way to look at it, I for one have no problem with Asus. I think the blame should be wider spread between Asus, nVidia and Google. I don't think it's a coinsidence that the Nexus 7 was realesed when JB was ready, Tegra 3 with ICS was problematic. I have bought several Asus products both before and after the Prime and I'm very satisfied. The RMA issus are with a third party company since Asus has no service tech in Norway.

New problem.... Charging issue, and thoughts?

Up until this morning I had considered myself one of the lucky prime owners that had no problems with their device. The My prime has not suffered any of the defects I have seen other users having issues with, no screen bleed, great wifi, only a little issue with gps, and I purchased the unit from the one extra stock that the gamestop in SF received on the day they're delivered. Very happy overall with my firs tablet.... Until this morning..
Last night with my battery hovering around 15% I plugged into to charge, and got the wonderful little sound letting me know that night the morning I would have another full charge to waste f'in about.. When I woke up at 4 my prime was at 71% and status said not charging..... Strange I thought, and maybe a fuse had blown? No.... Every outlet in my house produces the same result.... No power getting to the prime
It was charged through a protected outlet in my server cabinet, so I know the power was clean and surge free.... Has anyone out there experienced anything like this before? I am thinking now that I will have RMA the unit because the charge circuits somehow failed.. I have no provision test another power supply for charging purposes and do nothing I have even seen extras available yet.. When I get to work I will verify that I still have connectivity to my pc and see what happens.
Please I would like some constructive thoughts on this matter.... I do not want to start another thread that catalyzes everyoneone into a fit of prime bashing or or telling me why I should returnitand buy a new device.... I am lookingfor hopefully a resolution or similar experience that can help me out before I make the decision to RMA for a new unit .... Damn and I only had a few days left to waitfor ICS
If it helps I am on the latest update 33, and rooted with jcase and viperboys (thanks guys, awesome work) tool....

Your charger is overheating. Did the same thing with mine, an hour in the freezer worked like a charm. Remember to put it in a bag though.
There is a temperature trip circuit in the charger, which evidently kills charging if the charger passes a temp threshold. This was apparently a very prevalent problem on the tf101, and has been known to carry over to the TF201 occasionally. I have not experienced it, but i have seen this 'fix' used successfully.
Definitely sounds worth a try then... I can try this fix when I get to work and report back... Is this something I should expect on a regular basis? I Can do it for a while until I can source a new charger, that I do not mind... At this point anything that keeps this thing in my hand and up and running is good news in my book. Thanks for the suggestion guys!

Please keep us posted. One of the first things I noticed when I got my Prime was how damn hot the charger got when charging. You can literally burn yourself if you squeeze it.
The charger is a piece of ****. Instable, overheating, buzzing, the one on my TF died a long time ago.
If it doesn't work anymore, find yourself a new one (that provide 12v output and not the regular 5v) with a USB port, it cost something like 10$ and you won't risk to set your house on fire each time you charge your TFP.

Well its not that strange.....I used to do this with clicking Hard Drives after they over heat. This would allow you at least an hour to access your files to recover them. Its a long known data recovery secret. ;-)

I am at work now and chager has been in the feezer for approx 20 min... gonna leave it till the hour mark and I will update as to the progress of this very strange yet intresting adventure....
Alright... so my update on the problem.... Put the charger in the freezer for a good couple of hours to see if it could be reset... after letting come back to room temp, I plugged it in and nothing.... charger is blown. Had to go to office depot to get a new one, but the good news is that it was not the prime itself! Thanks for the ideas everyone!
Have anyone been able to charge their Prime from their PC like it says you can do in the manual.
I tried and the Prime didn't show any indication that it was being charged, in fact it still said to connect it to a charger.

Op,
I have been watching people complain about this, if you plan to throw the charger away could I get you to toss it into an envelope and send it to me, I want to do some research on it to see if I can figure out why it is burning out.
Does anyone have a link to a cheap, compatible charger? I guess the voltage can vary as long as it's not too low, but the current should match that of the original charger, from what I understand.

Flyingwolf, being an engineer myself I was very curious about doing a little investigation of my own... But I only have a multimeter. I would hope this should be enough to get a general idea of what's going on. If you would like I would love collaborate with you on this and see if we can figure out what is going on. If I get to deep over my head (I am a mechanical engineer not electrical after all ) I would have no problem at all sending it along! Let me know and we can go from there. Was planning on cracking it open this weekend.

Far from being an engineer myself, however my love of all things electronic and my hobby of RC has forced me to learn as much as I can, I have become rather proficient lol.
Me personally I would just being doing some simple probe tests, figuring out if there was an issue with manufacturing (cold solder joint, too tight wire that pulls with heat expansion etc).
I am sure as a mechanical engineer you should have no problem figuring it out.

I paid 30 at office Depot for an OEM unit... I would recommend you always use the stock system to charge as it may have integrated circuitry to actually talk back and for to the prime for charging to correct levels. Further investigation as noted in my last post should hint at this so stay tuned. I will note that they keep the chargers in the back at my local store and when I called had no idea what I ws taking about. I had to give them the item number from online before they could find it... So I would check availability online and find a store that has them in stock before you go on a wander to find one. Hope that helps

If its less than a year old, not rooted, and no evidence of physical damage or water damage, then they have to fix it under warranty.

As of right now its still at 80% but i have a feeling once this thing dies we wont be abke to power it back up. It was xmas gift from her grandmother and of course her grandmother cant find the reciept and paid cash for it. I called geek squad and they said theres nothin they can do because theres no reciept and we dont have bestbuys insurance. They told me to call htc and see what they can do. Also is there maybe a power mat for tablets like there is for phones?

Power Mat requires access to the charge port, or to replace the battery door. So that's not going to help you in this case. Calling HTC is your best bet.
Had a problem like this. The Tab inside the charging port was pushed in too far. I took the case off, and pushed the tab back out then reset the two positioning tabs to hold the connection tab in the correct position. If those two positioning tabs are not depressed deep enough the connection tab can be pushed in out of place and no connection is made.
Im not mechanically incline enough to do that lol.....i called htc and told em the story there sent me out a package with a return shipping package. Apparently this is a common issue. They said as long as theres no physical damage or water damage it shouldnt be an issue. The case has been in an otterbox since day one

ATP up and died last night. :(

Last night Prime #2 (1st was returned b/c of GPS) just died with no warning or explanation. It refuses to turn on. I have tried the reset button with a paper clip as well as the hard reset with volume and power buttons. Nothing nada. The only response the tablet will give is a short buzz of the haptic feedback if I hold the power button long enough. That is all. When I plug in the charging cable, I get a green light on the power button.
I am taking it back to Best Buy. I am not sure if I will try Prime #3 or get a Galaxy Tab of some sort. The quality control from Asus is clearly sub par.
What reset button?

Else best return for RMA.
The LCD on Prime seems to flaky. My first one had a band of dead scanlines.

Yeah, just sounds like the ribbon cable came out of its connector. This is apparently pretty common and easy to cause, have you tried hooking it up mHDMI to a television?
If you're not willing to open it and are within your return window, just exchange it or refund it. Otherwise you'll wait three weeks for the service center near you to plug the cable in...
I have not tried connecting HDMI. I will try that though for no other reason than I would like to confirm my data is wiped before I exchange it.
The ATP was kept in a leather folio case and not subject to any unusually rough handling.
+1 on buxtahuda comment. I had the same issue and it was definitely the ribbon. A slight bump and my display was out as well. Ended up RMAing it since I was out of the return window.

connecting HDMI cable to t.v. is best way to determine if its your display that went out. if you power up or its already on and stuff shows on the screen, then your display lost connection. if nothing shows up on t.v. then it might be something else. either try draining the battery dead then charging up again or just exchange it at best buy. newer models likely to be good. I have an early batch Prime from 12/22 n had no issues. good luck

I would like it very much too, had it done anything to revive my dead prime.
Unfortunately, I called my Best Buy and was told I have to go through Asus RMA because it has been 27 days since I got my Prime - outside of their 14 day window. CRAP.
Ya I remember when everything had a 30 day window....now it is 14 days, is some BS to me.....there should be laws protecting things like that

Ouch. Yeah, that's what happens with BB lol
Well, you can RMA.
But, since you are already past the return window you could navigate to Erusman's thread (I'll be updating my own later on how to reconnect the cable properly) and very carefully open your Prime without voiding warranty and fix the cable yourself.
Someone made comment about not leaving fingerprints, so be sure to not touch the spots of adhesive and to lightly dust off any signs of your 'foul' play.

Ah, yes, you could. I'm not too familiar with them, but I know they cover just about anything. Will probably be a lot quicker than RMA'ing to ASUS for sure.
I had thought about it, but I think if my ATP does get killed I'll let it RIP and go on and try another in the line that will fit my CG dock. That is to say so long as its far enough down the road to do so and it actually does die.
@scook9:
That's true, but a completely unresponsive screen is (almost) 100% going to be a hardware issue. Very seldom would it be s/w, and he doesn't even get the recovery displayed so it's certainly not s/w in this case.
That is good to know however, and makes sense considering they're really there for the accidental drop/submerge coverage, unless you get the basic that covers just straight h/w malfunctions.
VVVVVVVVVVVVV
On tablets and phones they do not cover software problems - FYI
Just got a warranty off them myself and read through it
That's terrible. Let us know how it goes!

[Q] prime is not charging?

I have not been able to use my Transformer Prime for a few months now (I'm in the military) and obviously the battery died. The problem is, I cant get it to turn on at all now. The power cable connectors look fine, and it always worked before this. Does anyone have any advice? My Prime is rooted and running Virtuous Rom.
I would assume something wrong with the power supply or port inside the device. I have a prime that I am parting out if you need any parts. The only thing that is unusable is the system board on mine (due to a bad flash).
Best of luck figuring it out!
Well neither the tablet nor the dock are charging. Would that indicate a bad power cord more than anything else?

Normally I think it has to get up to I think a 5% charge before it will turn on but not sure if this is what you are describing or if you have let it stay plugged in for some time and it is not charging. That would seem like a hardware issue then.

All the youtube video's are only replacing the simple stuff.
I have tried using another battery + batterycharger, this is not the problem. The phone still doesn't charge. I really suspect there is oxidation inside the USB connector.
Hope there's anybody who can help with replacing it.
should be the cable problem? many cases on this!
If you don't know any better about hardware, why don't you just buy an additional battery and battery charger... through could be little bit inconvenient

Thanks but this isn't the case with me. I really suspect there is oxidation inside the USB connector. So could anyone help with how to replace this? I live in the Netherlands.
You said you dissembled it, you have enough knowledge about it?
I don't have much myself too but I tried my hands on my older devices in many cases, so I can only suggest you that the charging point which is a usb port would be connected to your pcb which needs to be disconnected with the help of an soldering iron and then you can replace it with a new one. However do it only if you have subsequent knowledge.
Also before trying anything try more chargers, I came to know that none of the generic and few original ones couldn't charge mine too. Check for their voltage.

alright, thanks for the reply. But my device is flashed around 1000 times and it looks like i opened beercans with it. So this would not create a healthy warranty argument i guess. This is why i'm trying to do it myself.
Now all of a sudden it charges again, when i left it at the charger... so definately no charger problem. maybe oxidation/waterdamage from raindrops?
Triangle away

You have already flashed your device 1000's of time, soo i'd recommend you to flash it back to stock and try triangle away application
It did work for me
Soo .. if you manage too get system status back too normal, you can easily claim your warrenty
Put it in a bag of rice for a day so any water kind of damage is gone.

No warranty user disassembled .

it randomly starts charging and stops charging now. same with connecting to pc, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't connect...
no cable issue.
If you are afraid about any water or moisturizer fault, put it in a bag of rice for a day.

also when you think the water has already dried up?
Yeah, sometimes water dried up and formed in iron too but I can't be sure that could be your problem.

Yeah right, it could handle moisturizer but once it's oxidative, rice cannot help.
