Don't currently own one, just want to make sure about a few things. Searched through the Dev forum but still I am not 100% sure and that's why I am asking here, just to confirm.
1. Is the bootloader unlocked for all firmware so I can flash custom ROMs or do I need to check something to determine if the bootloader is unlocked? I read somewhere that firmware 2.3.5 9 or above cannot be unlocked.
2. Does it come carrier unlocked by default to be used in countries other than the US, I mean use any GSM SIM?
3. What other phone can you tell me to look at, with similar specs and price range? I am interested in unlocked GSM, doesn't matter if its CDMA or not.

1) Need to be on 2.3.4 in order to unlock bootloader. If ordering from sprint, it might already come with 2.3.5. Buy from eBay and make sure to have the seller confirm its on 2.3.4.
2) Its a world phone. Its only carrier locked in the united states. But there are ways around this.
3) As far as used price range, the GS2 is probably the closest mainstream competitor on sprint. Galaxy nexus being just a bit more expensive. But you lack world phone capabilities and the photon is arguably a better phone all around depending on who you ask.

Ok so it means that I cannot flash custom ROMs right? But I can gain root access to modify the OS installed.

can you link me to something to read to understand what I can do/not do with root and what with unlock? I searched, got something but its quite confusing. What I understand is Root = admin access like but don't know about the unlock.
I think bootloader should be unlocked to install custom ROM but then there's something called fastboot which only requires Root. Confused here. BTW does Unlock means Unlocked Bootloader?

The rules are simple: You need to unlock the bootloader to install custom ROMs that use custom kernels. You can't unlock if you are on 2.3.5. You do not need to be unlocked to use custom ROMs that use STOCK kernels. We only have two ROMs that use stock kernels. The rest, including ICS and JB, use custom kernels so you need to be unlocked to use them.

I have searched the forums for my answers as well as the web. I am getting a replacement razr from verizon. The rep told me if the phone was rooted or had an unlocked bootloader I would be charged $299. I know if I overlooked anything and this question has been answered I will catch hell .It must be said that I know nothing about rooting and this was my first venture. I used EternityProject EasyRootICS to root. My question is simple did that method of rooting unlock the bootloader on my razr. I wil use superusersu to unroot. Will I have issues with verizon.

There is no way to unlock the bootloader so if you are rooted, you can simply fastboot the stock rom and you will be unrooted... The rep is an idiot and wants to scare you because if he knows what he is saying he will never tell you anything about unlocked bootloader on the razr as its impossible....

If you are stock other than root, i.e. you haven't flashed a leaked OTA or ROM, simply removing root will be sufficient. I would suggest also doing a factory reset.

That is incorrect. The bootloader can be unlocked on the RAZR, but it will only unlock one of the dual core processors. Your "impossible" statement is invalid.

Perhaps you need to do some reading. There is currently no bootloader that is unlockable on the RAZR whether it be the xt909, xt910 or the verizon xt912 version. Some people do have RAZR's that are engineering samples with the efuse in engineering position allowing them full access. There is however a bypass (kexec by kholk) that allows users to load a custom kernel over top of the factory kernel. Currently the custom kernel can only activate one core however a newer version could possibly be in the works that supports ICS/JB and will allow the second core to be operational. This is not unlocking the bootloader but merely loading a custom kernel by the kexec command available in the kernel.
Regarding what the cs rep said, just do an unroot/factory wipe or better yet flash the fastboot for your respective version. There are several guides in the development section on how to do so using RSDLite.

On ICS there is no way to unlock or bypass our bootloader. Kexec is only available to GSM users on Gingerbread, it's not a bootloader unlock tool, it a bootloader bypass. Yes, it is practically impossible to unlock our bootloaders unless Motorola gives an unlock OTA or tool. The reason for this is that there is triple band RSA encryption on it, it would take an insane amount of time for even the most powerful computer that could be sold on the market today to unlock it.

You also need to do some reading, Kexec is just a bypass for custom kernels not radios which is what you can get when it's unlocked. There are also many other things you have to rotk around when using Kexec.

i don't think the japanese photon is unlockable. all you can do is root. since it's the same phone as the photon, anything and everything will work.
since you can't unlock you'll get no real custom roms like cm7, cm9 and all the other good stuff.

same with my problem.. I using photon KDDI to. and it cannot be unlock using android sdk windows. when I tried to unlock bootloader using android sdk windows, it says "INFOOEM is not implemented".. very suck.. I think photon KDDI is very suck..

From what I have heard the photon kddi can be unlocked if it is on old enough firmware, motorola made the same perma-locking update for it that they did with the photon 4g and electrify. It would also be useful have a sbf for it, there were apparently some floating around on some japanese websites, if you know japanese maybe you could ask for someone to send you it.
I don't think that bootloader is different. Probably same as US version. Radio and system are different.

I'm looking to buy a motorola photon online,it was on spring and it suposed to be unlocked for every carrier. i'm from mexico, we use telcel.
The motorola photon only comes with GB android, and i've always like to modify my phones with roms, root, etcs.
Before i do any transaction i'd like to know if i can instal ICS roms or any other cooked roms without loosing the unlocked carrier?.

I had been investigating about that but i dont find an straight anwser! im sorry if this looks to newbish, i know if i open the bootloader i can install another kernels and roms, but i loose the 4G :crying::crying: and if the cel is 2.3.5 it can´t be unlocked! it has to be downgrade!

sim unlocking is usually only possible via SOLD sim unlock codes so yes, if you need to sim unlock you have to pay

bootloader unlocking and carrier unlocking are not related. bootloader unlocking can be done for free by yourself with the help of the info here in XDA. SIM unlocking requires a code you usually have to buy.

losing 4G shouldn't be of much concern to you. Telcel doesn't use WIMAX 4G so you wouldn't have had any use to it anyway.

if the cell is 2.3.5 already it cannot be unlocked and you CANNOT downgrade it because you risk HARD brick
The sim is only locked in US.
All other sims work.
But stuck on GB. Even if you could flash ICS the photons kernel is so old the video doesn't work well.

Do you mean "bumped," with TWRP recovery?
If so, you'll still get notified about the OTA. The OTA should fail to run, but on my last device some people had the KitKat update run even though they had a custom recovery, and it screwed up all sorts of things. So don't accept the OTA if you get it.

As long as the phones system is totally original with no mods or deleted files you should get ota...depends on how it was unlocked.

I am basically getting a used device from a Friend of mine who got it from US and now in India its a Sprint variant and he is currently using it here, Where as he is not in to Rooting and Customizing, Where as I am so Ill be getting the device today evening, I need to know if its unlocked CAN it be locked again by Sprint (Not sure how it was unlocked) if its locked again can i use Bump and Unlock.

Im sure if its unlocked it can still get ota by flashtool. If system is changed. But as far as root or bump. Certainly can. It can be bumped stumped etc. And flashtool back for ota. Depending how it was unlocked. Meaning if it was rooted to unlock then will have to flashtool back im almost sure. Again if your wanting to make sure it stays unlocked usually once unlocked it will stay. I guess it will depend how. And if oem unlocked then im sure re locking is not much of an option. However you should be fine from many of these worries. Hope not to confuse you. Im very tired. Lol. Trying to cover all bases. There are many ways to unlock many devices on many carriers so its really hard to say. But there are mostly generalized options one would believe.

Right now I cant afford 25 for the soff (in my country, outside of USA is a little more difficult because the conversion). So, if I use the dev unlock bootloader, Can I install custom any rom ( i ask because I dont know where I saw custom rom requiring S-OFF) and then do the s off after a while (maybe 2 o 3 months). If I use dev unlock from htc, they will be able to track that I install custom roms? And how about bricks, wich side is safest (only unlock bootloader or Soff) and wich side is more easy to recover?.

HTC will typically not honor a warranty for a device purchased from and intended for another country. However, how HTC handles warranty seems to vary from one location to another. Did you buy the M7 from the US?
Along those lines, how HTC handles bootloader unlocks via HTCDev.com also seems to vary from one country to another. Yes, they can and will track the phones IMEI by HTCDev.com, and know you requested a bootloader unlock code. Some folks have had their warranty claims denied that way. But others are successful returning the phone to bootloader LOCKED (not RELOCKED, s-off required to make it LOCKED after unlocking it), stock software, possibly s-on.
You don't need s-off to flash ROM. But you will want to make sure your firmware is up to date. If the phone is on stock Lollipop, the firmware is probably up to date (especially if the phone was purchased new, not used). Otherwise, s-off makes it a bit easier to update firmware, but its also possible with s-on.

Are you talking about recovering from no-boot conditions? s-off always gives more options. But most cases of no boot are solved by flashing custom recovery again, flashing a ROM, or other functions possible with s-on.
Yes, with M7 I bought it from ATT, and they honor the warranty, but IN USA. I was there in vacation and send it. I'm in kitkat, I didnt update with RUU because dont know if sunshine works on latest firmware. So, even if I unlock with dev unlock. And after that I use S-OFF to make it Locked, they still can track it? In theory is better to go with S-OFF directly?

Based on reports I've seen on XDA, your warranty won't be honored since you are not located in the US. Of course, if you travel back to the US, or send it to a US friend to send in for warranty, that might work.

Sunshine s-off function still works on Lollipop. However, the root function does not (and root is needed to s-off). Some folks have temp rooted, and able to get s-off to work (then bootloader unlock).
But I would recommend using sunshine to root, s-off then bootloader unlock (bypassing HTCDev.com) all those things with sunshine; while still on KitKat (before RUU to Lollipop), if you are worried about warranty.

Yes, they can still track it. The bootloader unlock code is based on your IMEI, and they are probably tracking/recording the IMEI numbers that go through HTCDev.com.
I think some folks have been successful making the phone back to LOCKED (and even s-off) and of course also stock software, and getting the warranty honored. But I'd say its no guarantee. Some folks will also say they can't "legally" void your warranty for requesting an unlock bin code (as long as you return to "full" stock) as they can only prove you requested a code, not that you actually used it.
But at that point, its your word against there's. HTC holds the cards here. You can try to fight it, but in the meantime you still don't have a working phone.
To some degree, when we all mod our phones, we have to assume that there is some risk that warranty will be void.

You can update firmware (after s-off) with AT&T Lollipop RUU, or by flashing a firmware.zip in fastboot.
Flashing AT&T firmware will keep the same band support. If you want to change the band support, you can flash another version's firmware. But it depends on what bands your carrier uses for 3G and 4G (LTE).

Its more fast to just flash the firmware i think, because I dont need to download all the RUU.
And with the HTC really can change the band support? I think that is something of hardware. But if that can be done I want to try it.

EDIT 2: I found that the numbers means the region. So, whats the latest firmware? Can I flash it even if my phone is ATT? Because I saw Just 1 for ATT

You are somewhat correct, in that before the M8, band support was set in hardware on most (or all?) phones.
But a new feature of the Snapdragon 801 chipset, is that band support is set in software. Flashing another CID's firmware will change the band support (may need to change CID and MID, and s-off required to change CID/MID).

AT&T is 502. But that thread only has 1.54.502 (which is same or probably even older than current firmware), and what you want (latest) is 4.28.502.
You can get the 4.28.502 firmware on the following thread, but you have to download the ROM with it (all packed in the same zip):

Not sure if 4.28.502 firmware is posted by itself anywhere else (I haven't seen so).

Thanks, thats new to me. And yes I found under 1540 a more recent firmware. So there is 0 risk of brick flashing other firmware right? I need SuperCID? Or is the same with ATT? (I'm curious for trying because with my phone my 3G speed is capped to 1mb dont know why, and other friends, same plan, other phone, have more speed)

Pretty sure you need to change your CID either to Dev Edition CID or SuperCID.

There is never zero brick risk. Your phone can brick just sitting there, doing nothing (very unlikely, but its possible). In particular, flashing hboot (which firmware does) if anything goes wrong (for instance, don't disconnect the phone while its flashing!) while writing hboot, it will brick.
But flashing another CID's firmware is low risk. Probably no more risk than flashing the proper CID firmware, or doing an official RUU or OTA.
