I found a very easy method to preserve root access between different ICS firmwares.
Maybe many of you already know, just post it for convenient as new firmware released.
Requirements:
1. Already running on rooted 4.0 system
2. ROOT TOOLKIT from here
Steps:
1. Download and extract "Step1-rooted.bat" to the same directory as "Step 1.bat"
2. Run "Step1-rooted.bat" BEFORE upgrading/flashing
3. Flash/update WITHOUT WIPING ANYTHING
4. Run "Step2.bat" after upgrade/flashing
5. Your root access is back, enjoy!
Tested with Sony PC Companion, Sony Update Service and Flashtool update/flash
Output of Step1-rooted.bat should look like this if there are no errors:
This is an adapted idea from the methods of

I've just changed all "adb shell XXXXXX" to "adb shell su -c XXXXXX" to retain /data/local/tmp exploit after update,
therefore we don't need to flash back to GB to create the symlink
Thanks man, I'll keep this for further upgrade
Had a slight problem with step two not installing SuperSU.(My fault I believe for unplugging it too early) But just turned the phone off and on again and ran Step2 again.
A lot easier than going back to GB and having to back up and restore all my data.
Works perfectly with my Locked Bootloader too.
So Cheers!

Any particular error or reason for it not working?
Could I get some assistance using this? I'm kind of a noob at this.
I have ICS and root on my S.
I started the step1root bat and pluged in my device holding power and volume- down.
I got this error messages (see picture)
Can someone please explain what exactly I need to do to get this working?
Why not just untick kernel in FlashTool?

You run the the flashtool by holding down the volume button and then plugging in the USB cable.
BUT for step1 and step2 It seems to work best if you boot up the phone, enter your pin. and leave it on the home screen and then run it.
So: On homescreen -> Run Step1.bat -> Restart. -> Turn off. -> Set up Flashtool with new rom -> Volume down + USB cable -> After ROM has installed, boot to homescreen -> Step2.bat.

Thank you for the answer.
So with my phone on (at homescreen) I connected to pc and ran step1.bat, but I still get exactly the same lines like on my screenshot.
I just want to make sure, that is how it's supposed to be?
I can flash the ftf now and then run step2?
It looks like errors to me, but like I said, I know nothing about this

Did you have root before this? You should not get that error. It should complete and then restart your phone for you.
Do you have 'Step1-rooted' in the same folder as 'step1' and 'step2' and a 'data' folder?
I would wait to see what imTigger says, because he may know the solution for that error. So dont flash your rom just yet

OK, I will start off by saying I have (nearly) completely screwed myself.
I have a P769 (TMO; does this mean BK?).
I followed this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38677123http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38677123) to root the device and successfully made it through (using V20D KDZ).
Then then tried to flash this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335984). Unforunately, I did not have an unlocked bootloader and now I am receiving a Security Error at boot. Even more unfortunate is that I did NOT do a backup so I am truly in a bad place now.
I tried to run through the first step of rooting but the software will not detect the phone as being connected and tells me to connect the USB cable. I have installed the drivers that are in that post but admittedly I may have updated them after rooting.
At this point I only have access to fastboot so I am trying that method but I cannot find any system.img files to be able to flash the system partition.
What do I do now? Can anyone help me? I have exhausted every Google search and XDA search. I may be missing something but I feel I am in a very bad place now and need to get this phone back up and running.

Is it possible to create a custom update.zip to flash with?

I am running 32-bit Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1. I tried flashing V20D_00.kdz (using the offline flash) as well as the V10G_00.kdz and V10E_00.kdz.
Using the offline flash method I constantly get the error of cannot connect to phone no matter how many times I restart the PC or phone and unplug USB.

All caps, correct.
Should I do fastboot and then run the offline method?
I did do the fastboot then tried the recovery phone option from the support tool.
I did find a recovery I made that included (for some reason) only the recovery and boot.

I'll reboot and then try that again. I'll check back afterwards.
Should I do anything extra like start the offline flash from scratch as far as drivers? I'm not even sure where to begin in regards to what drivers/files to remove.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Now I just need to figure out the screen calibration.
Also, what can I do with this now? Do I need to unlock the bootloader to load custom ROMs without getting a security error?
Sorry for my lack of knowledge. My last phone was a Bionic and that was the easiest phone to root and add a ROM to.
unfortunately i find myself in this situation
gettin security error after what i assume was me trying to flash on a locked bootloader
anyway, i can't figure this out, the whole flashing fastboot and what not
i read through the readme and installed the drivers for the "other/unknown" device that pops up
this is what i try to do next
open up start.bat
enter 5 and hit enter
remove battery from phone (as instructed) and hit any key
boot phone into sw upgrade (holding vol up and plugging in usb cable)
device seems to be picked up and i see the "wait 5 seconds" (german?) and the image is revered horizontally on my phone
now after 4/5 seconds it says "waiting for device", which then i put the battery in
but NOTHING happens after this, it hangs at "waiting for device"
can someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong?
otherwise i think i'm left with a totally effed lg optimus l9

Odds are, you are doing nothing wrong. Check your android version, if you are on 4.2+ (JellyBean) you can't unlock your bootloader quite yet. Here is the thread you should keep track of at the moment http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277639&page=152

Nope! I had to do a warranty exchange. I was copying the system image then I thought it finished so I unplugged the phone. May I tried my best to get the phone back but I could only get into fastboot mode, but hey lesson learned. Though I did see this tool that someone here was trying to use to flash bin and fls files in 3 minutes! But it only works for p790 Optimus black. Which sucks because I could get my phone into an inverted S/W upgrade mode (yeah I know it's on the real one) but it only lasted for about 3 minutes then shut down so doing the offline fix just took too long. I would get to about 23% install and the phone would just turn off. . so close! LOL
EDIT: YEAH got the phone to finally work! No exchange now, take that LG! Just kept trying there offline fix

I'm trying to restore my P769 to stock (Stuck LG logo), and getting nowhere.
How did you get the flash to work? What error did you get when the phone would turn off? How did you get the inverted S/W mode?
My phone only got to 17-20% before getting an connection error using the offline booth method, this was with both JB and ICS u-boot/boot/recovery .imgs from the P769 ROMs--should I try the steps in unlocking the bootloader to at least get to a bootable state?

How did you solve this? I am at the same steps, I get into mirrored software mode and then I attempt the offline fix. I have even started the offline fix early to save time. And yet it will only stay on for 2 and a half minutes or so and then shuts off. The farthest i have been able to get it to go is 41%. I have tried fastboot mode to try and send boot.img and it just says that it cannot find the boot partition. So it looks like my only option is the offline fix but it doesn't have enough time to complete. I have tried about 20 or so times how many tries did it take for you? Did you do anything special to get it to finish? any advice on how to get it to finish? Spent about 6 hrs last night trying to get this phone back up and running and this is where i am stuck. Its lame cuz i woke up to the phone like this it was fine when i went to bed. And was for months.
i Was on JB V20A and i installed the root and the CWM and try to put cwm. to check if bootloader was still locked well it does.
and now im stock on L9 Security error.
i can enter on S/W and tryin using the "UpTestEX_mod2_marwin" the Window enabler and the Http.exe to flash it but.
i try phone mode CS_emergency and emergency but when it start to check the phone it stuck on 15% and i can turn on the phone (thats the way i used to bypass the 15% and get with the instalation)
so what now? i can enter on S/W and Recovery Mode LG (This mode is for data backip at service center. after reboting press power key to keep using phone), still can do hard reset pressing volumen less home and power but nothing happen keep with the error.
i know while the phone turn on there's a solution.

This case is very simple to solve. When you try to install a custom recovery with your bootloader locked, the phone system detects it and give you a message of an error in security, like in your case. To solve this, you'll need to reflash your rom. By doing this, the KDZ will reflash the original recovery and you will be able to access your phone/recovery again.
Step by step:
1. You need to install fastboot drivers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119090
Turn off the phone and remove the battery. Download THIS and exctract it to C:/. Open device manager in windows (Rigt click on Computer > Manage > Device manager) and connect your phone without the battery to pc via USB cable. Look in device manager for a new hardware connected, right click on it and click in update drivers. In the window open, select "Search for software driver in the computer" and in the window open select insert C:\fastboot\usb_drv_windows, tick the option "include subfolders" and advance. A pop up window may appear asking you if you do want to install the driver, choose YES and the drivers will install.
2. Navigate to the folder you extracted (C:/fastboot) and double click on start.bat. It will ask you for administrator privileges, just say yes.
3. Select your phone model (2 for P760, 3 for P765, 4 for P768 and 5 for P769). It will ask you to turn off your phone and remove battery. When you done with that, press enter. It will now ask you to insert USB cable with the phone without the battery and after 4 seconds re-insert the battery. Onde you done with that, it wil return a message to press any key. In this step the fastboot drivers may be installed again. Don't worry, it's normal
4. Remove the battery again, wait a few seconds and re-insert it.
5. Plug the USB cable in the phone with the battery in and let VOL UP pressed. The phone will enter in SW Update mode.
6. Follow THIS to reflash your rom. A list of avaiable official roms of different models is HERE. Remember to only flash roms made for your phone model or you may get some issues.
7. You're all done I recommend using THIS TWEAK, the phone becomes more responsive.
*** If you flashed a JellyBean rom (V20X.kdz) you can easily root with THIS and if you want CWM recovery use THIS ONE ------ REMEMBER NOT TO FLASH ANY CUSTOM ROM WITH THIS RECOVERY BECAUSE I'M CONSIDERING YOUR BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED AND FOR THIS REASON, YOU CANNOT FLASH CUSTOM ROMS WITH CWM, IT JUST DOESNT WORK!!!
Hope it help you
It works!!

Yes my P769 BOOTLOADER definitely is locked and I can't even root it with all methods provided in xda, I use exactly your method to get my L9 back to life -- although I have to flash it back to original stock but at least it's BACK! Thank you so much. I saw some other people have the same issue but they can't make it work, hopefully your answer shed the light to ALL!
security error just use the lg pc suite and remove the lines or the host put recover via recovery and put your imei and it will start to download the stock Rom

I tried this method and the offline kdz method and here is the trouble I am having.
1. With this method I do everything perfect the device shows up for a couple seconds then it disappears so I cannot go any further.
2. With the offline fix I followed the OP to the letter and when I get to the part where I click on "normal web upgrade" I open it and start the upgrade as stated in the OP and nothing. I get the retry or cancel internet warning and ignore or close it and it will not even try pushing the file.
Anyway I have tried 2 different machines to no avail I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and fixed it?

Didn't work for me! But I tried another method and that saved me from a lot of steps.
Just install the driver and the latest LGMobile Support Tool
Start your phone in Software upgrade mode... Power + Vol up
In the LGMobile Support Tool click on Options and then Upgrade Recovery
Put your IMEI in the option that pops up
Wait for the miracle!
It worked for me ... NO MORE LG SECURITY ERROR

cant install fastboot drivers windows 10
I understand that I am in no way the first person to have boot loop problem with the font installer but the solution always seems to be to flash a rom. My problem however is that I don't have cynagonmod or aokp, I only have stock jelly bean 4.1.2 on my LG p769
I did root my Phone and I have changed my font 2 other times before but this time when I did it my phone just went into a boot loop, do I need cwm recovery? because I don't think I have that and honestly this entire process has ben nothing but confusing.
If you don't have a custom recovery then you have to flash a ROM. You have to install adb and then fastboot then sw mode to flash the right ROM. Sounds complicated but it's kinda easy once you get the hang of it. Good luck

Yes sw upgrade mode. You will need to use camendra and Lelus method for flashing.

Then go back to the original post to install the u-boot and x-loader for p769 then get back into the fastboot and choose 1 for fastboot. Enter sw upgrade mode and flash your ROM.

No matter what I do the program always says Waiting for OMAP44xx Device... and I think I'm having problems installing this driver. I am using Windows 8 so do you think this might have anything to do with it?
I have tried on xp and win 7 which worked so idk about 8. Here try to follow just this for omap4boot.

So it turns out it was because I was using Windows 8 ( or possibly my surface pro) , I haven't flashed my phone yet but at least I've installed the driver and I'm running Fast Boot now, Thanks Nathan.7118391
I have reached a point where my phone has the the LG logo in black and white backwards, and it says fastboot v0.2 backwards... but the post doesn't say anything about how to flash the rom aferwards. and does it need to be an official kdz or can it be aokp?
I get as far as...
sending image to target...
size = 246272
usb_write 4
usb_write 246272
** Done **
< waiting for device >
then my phone re-enters the bootloop
I'm sorry to keep asking questions but every time I make progress there is always some problem and every forum just leads me to another forum.. I've already achieved fast boot on my phone, "I think" but I'm extremely confused as to how to flash the kdz. Any detailed explanation would be deeply appreciated. This probably seems really easy for you but am at wits ends. Thanks however for guiding me so far
I think I should add that I'm newish to XDA and this is my first post
Alright, I'm send you to some more threads, but this will get everything working lol

His has an easy option to flash (with fastboot), the ice cream x & u for your device.
You need to do this to get the offline flash working.
Once you flash the x & u run the offline flash. Look at carloswii5 video to see how it is done.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41388372
Note, you are not doing the other stuff in the vid, just learn how to install and use the offline flash. plus checkout this thread for more info

Ok I'm assuming you are having trouble with the omap4boot commands. As the instructions say take out your battery from your phone and disconnect from computer. Run the program from your computer to get to the menu then select #3 for Prada and once you press enter put the usb cord into the phone then wait about 5 seconds then place your battery in. Should be smooth sailing after that. Once it asks you do you want fastboot just say no, and no to loading u-boot. Just disconnect your phone and you are done with this part. .Let me know when you are finished with this.
You can't flash a custom ROM in fastboot so you will have to load a stock kdz file but that's later. .
I finished that, I got all the way to the end where it says
--------------------------------------------
------------------------------
Please remove USB cable
and wait until LG Logo on
then reconnent USB cable again
------------------------------
fastboot devices (y/N) ? and press <ENTER> n
ls: resigned/p940-MLO*.bin: No such file or directory
Do you want to replace u-boot (y/N) ?n
ls: cwm/p940-*.img: No such file or directory
Press any key to continue . . .
I assume that is all I have to do here so should I just follow the New Lelus method now?

No Lelus method yet. You can do as Kuma has said above or what I did. Either way we are both trying to help you. Now that you got that done and congrats on that! Follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44325657&postcount=4&nocache=1&z=6862240654882044 which will help you with getting u-boot and x-loader on your phone. Skip getting the drivers because you already did that. But you will do the same thing that you did with the earlier program just now you are installing the x-loader and u-boot for your phone so your computer can "see" it. Once you've done that then you can flash with the Lelus method. But be sure to get it done right and practice if you need to.

OK thanks for clearing my confusion on the Lelus method... but I have tried both Omap... and Fastboot, my problem with fastboot is that it get to step 3 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44325657&postcount=4&nocache=1&z=6862240654882044
My phone screen is inverted and it says fastboot, but my computer never says press any button, just stops at <waiting for device>
about 1 minute after this appears, my phone just reboots into the loop. and I've seen other people post the entire script so I know my phone, or computer is stopping right before the x-loader and u-booter, for whatever reason.

Ah, ok, ok, ok. . .Try this: bring the program up with the choices then press #5 but don't hit enter just yet. Now take your battery out and put the usb into the computer but don't connect it to your phone. Hold the cable next the plug in and hit enter. . .then it will say something like requesting omap4boot that's when you place the cable into your phone then it will go through some stuff pretty fast don't pay any attention just count in your head to 4 or 5 seconds then put your battery and wait 'till the fastboot comes up. . .that's it. once that happens your phone is u-boot and x-load ready.
After that this point sucked for me. You have to take out the battery and unplug your phone from your computer at the same time then wait 2 seconds and put your battery back in then immediately afterward hold the volume up button while inserting your cable back into the computer. . .wait for S/W upgrade mode. THEN YOU DO THE LELUS METHOD!!!

if not, I will have to go through the process.
thanks again for your help.
let me know if there is a way without the root mode

Actually I have now the same question than "OP" on the recovery mode. I have now rooted the device the "super user app" is available and activated.
but I still can't access the recovery mode. I have tried the key combination mentioned in your post to "OP". then I referred to the post from DooMLoRD "All the info you need before you begin" with the Xperia Z tablet where the recovery mode is described.
I have the sony screen displayed, then I press volume up, the boot is going the normal way.
I tried with the usb cable connected to the PC, then it goes directly to the Xperia logo.
I tried the normal reboot (one light falshing) and the hard reboot (3 lights flashing) I do not have the device vibrating like explained by DooMLoRD.
Is this the reasn ?

You don't need recovery to install the apps if you have root. Just unzip the file using root explorer. The unzipped file will show from the structure where the files have to go so just copy them to the corresponding folder on the tab using root explorer. (apps, and their associated odex file if there is one, will usually be in /system/app folder) Don't forget to set the permissions (rw-r--r-- for system apps and odex files), also using root explorer. Reboot and if they're gonna work as system apps they will...

Hello,
thanks for the walk through.
I have followed it step by step and here is the result. my computer (PC windows 7) makes a sound like a usb device is connected but not recognized.
when I connect the tablet in the normal way it is recognized without problem.
do you think I need to install some drivers on the PC as well ?
thanks for your help

Hello Cat McGowan,
I have made some progress since your post. I have downloaded and installed fastboot toolbox from DooMLord (V1.0) and could access the fastboot mode
My final goal is to install the gapps on my tablet, I have downloaded the package the android 4.1.x.
to install the gapps, I need to find the recovery mode,
to install the recovery mode I have downloaded the TabZ_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel.img.
For the next step I need some help because I can't install the *.img through flashboot toolbox. or anything else for that matter.
thanks again for your good advice.

Hello guys, My XZU C6802 just got bricked today, in attempt to install Cyanogenmod.
I was rooted, I had dual recovery and I guess I installed CM10.2 because it was the most stable one out now, although, I didn't think and or realize that I can't go from a 4.4.4 to 4.3 on the 10.2..... I'm an idiot.
However, I've tried every method online to try and boot the phone up but it just won't turn on....
I've left it in charge for hours on end, 6-7 Hours and no point... Sony Support that I called told me to, Connect a wall charger to it, then at the same time hold power button and top volume button and if it vibrated 3 times that means the hardware is fine and the phone is responding.... in which mine did that and he told me to leave it in charge and to try and turn it on after a few hours.... but that didn't work either. It's connected to the charger but it's just blinking red LED light all the time constantly.
I can put it in boot loader mode only, by connecting the usb and holding VOLUP button at the same time as plugging in the usb.
I don't know what to do and I really need my phone, so I hope someone can help me!
I don't know if its gone now or if it's worth anything, should I sell it, keep it? I love the phone but if this is how it's going to be for a while or always at this point, Might as well try and sell it cheap and get another Samsung maybe.
I hope I don't have too. Please help guys!
Thank you XDA!
Did you try flashing stock ftf? That should help.
Hold volume down button while plugging in the usb cable to your pc, the led might go green (if i remember right), meaning you booted into flashmode correctly,
then download the flashtool from the internet and ftf from the forum and flash it off.
You should have it working

s
If you can get to the bootloader then just fastboot flash the approprate(IE the offical version that was on your before you borked it. if I recall correctly its probably listed in the bootloader) kernel, fota, and system image files. I'm sure there is a thread here that has the files. As an aside if you can get to the bootloader, you are not bricked, you're fine man/woman, listen to The Eagles on this one.
Did you unlock the boot loader at all?
anyway to recover:
download flashtool (http://flashtool.net)
download a FTF (see FTF thread in dev section)
start flashtool
select flashmode
select FTF from above
select start/flash/etc (cant remember the wording)
wait for the graphic to say connect phone
Hold vol. down key while connecting phone - LED will flash (blue?) for about 1/2 a second then turn off
(if the above does't work press the red reset button beside the SD card slot and try again)
wait for flash to finish
disconnect phone
You could also try EMMA from Sony.
Worked ery well everytime I bricked mine

Download sony pc companion and install it. Goto update software and select & make sure your phone is off and plug it in while holding vol up or vol down to get it in flash mode. PC should recognise it after installing drivers and select the recovery option if given ( you might have to tell it to force an update or it might automatically do it). Sit or make a cuppa while waiting for it to download the sony rom. You wont re lock your bootloader just restore the sony rom. Once downloaded it should start the process, I've done it a few times and managed to recover it.
Sony PC Companion won't work, tried it a lot. I have also tried EMMA too. Doesn't work, emma says; I have a locked boot loader.

I couldn't find any FTF?? I'm new here, i'm sorry, I just didn't really find anything. I got the flattop though. Thanks for that.
Found FTF; http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...tf-depository-sony-firmware-releases-t2829387
Thanks blueether. I used flashboot to unlock my boatload and then phones screen turned on and then I flashed FTF and it was complete reboot and I have my Stock back. Then loaded dual recovery again and restored my tarp backup of my complete phone. its working great thanks to you.
One question I have now, since I unlocked the boot loader and then re-installed stock, does this mean I have to unlock it again to be able to install Cyanogen or it permanently stays unlocked?

I didn't mention unlocking it in the guide did I?
Now that you have unlocked it (and I assume that you dont have a TA backup) just leave it unlocked. the only point to relocking is if you have a TA backup to do it with to restore the DRM keys that you just wiped

I had the same problem.
Just unlock it via fastboot like described on the sony homepage ( http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/ ) . The only thing you can't do is checking if its possible to unlock your bootloader, so just jump this step (worked with my C6833, no warranty to work with other models fron other countries).
Then you can use EMMA without any troubles any time you brick it. At least with my device it worked.

When you unlocked the boot loader isnt it better? I thought that's what everyone does in order to install custom Roms am I right? I mean when I had locked one I couldn't turn on my phone when I had installed cyanogen m

yes you have to unlock the bootloader to run custom ROMs and kernels, but if you don't back up the TA before you unlock it you have no way to get back to a pure stock state and you lose your DRM keys - so things that rely on them no longer work.

Ah, I see. What are DRM keys used for? and What would no longer work exactly? Sorry, I am new to this, so I am trying to get some knowledge of what everything is exactly.

Screencasting is one thing it breaks. The backup you made in recovery before unlocking your bootloader should relock it if restored. I have never been able to confirm if it might also restore drm keys though.

Okay thanks.
I have been trying to install recovery and root my z ultra again after a clean fresh stock restore and I can't install it.
I keep getting Towelroot error.. Tr.apk - Easyroot...
I have even downloaded the tr.apk separately and put it in the Files folder like it asks... Still.. no luck.
I am trying to install recovery on un-rooted rom then boot into recovery and flash supersu.zip.
Any easier ways? Any other ways to root and install recovery?
I have been trying many ways and I haven't gotten much luck.
Thanks.

now that your BL is unlocked life is simple, flash bootloader with recovery, flash su from recovery. although [NUT]'s dual recovery should work just as easy
You could try and flash (or even hotboot) this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705130
brick Sony z ultra GPE
Hey there! Such a problem. I beg your Sony Z Ultra GPE through Flashtool, as it turned out it can not be done. As a result, received a full brick. Does not respond to any operation. Please help if you can! Have a backup TA section. When connecting the phone without a battery, the computer recognizes it as SEMC Flash Device. Thanks in advance. Sorry for my English.

Ah I see.
I checked the thread you sent me, I cannot hotboot it, it doesn't detect my device for some reason.
I have all ADT, ADB, FLASHMODE AND BOOTLOADER mode drivers, it has worked before.
Any suggestions any ideas? Also I was wondering, is this for 4.4.4 the doomkernal you sent or 4.4.2? Cuz there's a pic in the thread showing 4.4.2 so I just wanted to make sure!
In the thread, this was mentioned, however, I don't understand this at all, well not much anyway.
