Application manager on Settings slow - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, everybody!
I have a little issue with my i9300: when I go to the Settings menu, Application manager, the list of Downloaded application takes 30 seconds or more to show the used space for every application. If I select an application while such info is not present, the Details show "Computing..." and it usually takes the phone about a minute to show the details.
Does anybody have this issue? I know it does not really affect the phone, as I can uninstall applications, clear cache, etc; but it's a bit annoying to find this settings section to be slow. And I do not know whether a specific application is slowing it down or what.
I would really appreciate any help, tips, or hints to solve this annoyance.
Thanks!

Mine's the same and has been on every ROM that I've tried.
I guess it has to access the app to ascertain what data is being stored.

Yeah, kinda weird. Now that I remember, I had the same issue on my S2, but my wife does not (S2 as well).

Yeah I've just checked on my wife's S2 and it calculates it quicker but she's got a fraction of the amount of apps as me

Lag in contacts

So everytime when I open the contacts app and press the bar with the lettres on the right side it freezes the app for about 1-3 seconds and then the app continues to work like normal. This behaviour occurs everytime I re-open the app.
Is this common behaviour?

Same. Stock Samsung. Latest build. So the s3 cannot handle a mere 400 contacts under its hood?

I've also have an issue with accessing the dialer.. Dialer takes 1-2 seconds to launch and then when switching from dialpad to contacts, there's also another slight 1 second lag. It has occured on both my stock TW rom and my current - Wanamlite+Siya kernal. Have rebooted and cleared memory many times, but same results.
Cold wakes on the phone also develops a 1-2 second lag to power on the screen.. but turning off/on right after is instantaneous.
Other applications and menus launch smoothly and I don't experience any low memory problems.

After a factory reset it's still present. Guess it's a software bug.

Yea, when I used CM9 there wasn't any lag.. only TW based roms as Omega rom seemed to exhibit it too for me.
It seems to be present in the music app too. Really annoying. Samsung should fix this.

Are you on the latest XXLG8 update? I just updated it and it seemed to have improved the lag quite a bit. I also cleared the phone data in the application manager. Still a bit present but usually more so only on the first run..it seems much more bearable now.

It's not yet released in my country. I'll just have to wait for it I guess.
after flashing a rom i got this issue too
but after a while its gone :silly:
i have the exact same problem too, ive tried over a dozen roms including stock, but the contacts app still lags sometimes for a second and up till 3, currently on clockwork mod recovery, siyah (latest), checkrom v4.
i guess it could be a problem if you have linked contacts to facebook, whatsapp and skype, but i dont know i would have to do some testing before i can tell for sure.
anyone come across a script/fix/modded contacts.apk file yet?
I have the same issue. having such an issue in the latest phone of samsung is very annoying. hope this will be fixed in jelly bean update.

Why is my GS3 being slugish ? Im gonna break this phone in half I swear!!!!!!

Ive had GT-I9300 model for several weeks now. Got it from Expansys. Didnt really notice this problem up until 1-2 weeks ago and its been happening alot throughout the day. I even tried factory reset and the problem is still present. Im talking about apps force closing alot. If im on facebook and im multi tasking or just using facebook app trying to view pics etc the app will lag and it will force close..sometimes this gets so bad that phone restarts on its own...it def. doesnt feel like quadcore at all.. the whole phone is just very slugish. What can I do here. Thinking about selling it and get gnex if this continues to happen without any solution.

So you would blame GSIII if rogue apps from market FC? You should even mention the app names as bala said and whether you have restored data? This kind of half baked question will never get a proper answer
If you search the forums properly you will find alot of threads with advices how to remove the said sluggishness from your s3 via turning off certain settings like s voice and also heed the previous poster's warning about rogue apps.
When i turned off alot of unnecessary settings the lag came off and i can listen to music while playing HD games while having my facebook on the background.

Slow operation, keyboard and battery issue

Hi,
I have 3 issues. Hope somebody can help:
1: Phone operates too slow. For example when I go to menu, app icons take around 5 seconds to appear. Similarly when I go to home screen it takes the same lag. So much delay that I could capture the screen short. You can see that weather clock and alarm widgets didn't appear. I cleared cache several times n restarts but it works fine for few mins n then again becomes laggy.
2: Keyboard disappears after typing few letters and sometimes it takes several secs to get it back. Reappearing delay is may be related to the above problem of slow response but why it disappears in first place.
3: Battery doesn't charge despite the whole night charging. Its happens not do often but really bugging me. I noticed that whenever I get missed notifications like calls or msgs it stops charging. Not sure why it's happening.
Looking forward to some help from experts. Please note that I feel these problems are occurring more after recent update. I'm using stock Rom of intl s3 version.
Thanks

I am also on XXBLFB and facing no such issues. You should check if some app is not eating a lot of RAM.
Jelly Bean won't be available for this region anytime soon keeping in view the time it took S2 to receive ICS update here.
I suspect the same. my RAM doesn't go below 600mb even if I close all apps and clear ram from task manager. After restart, phone behaves well for an hour but then again becomes laggy. My S2 is much faster than this with lot more apps. This S3 is really disappointing me.

my suggestion is to do a factory reset (after backing up your contacts, messages, notes etc). then download your apps again and note the behavior of phone after each app. You might find the culprit then. It doesn't seem like an issue with the update since I also updated mine. Also very less likely its gonna be hardware issue.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Maybe the CPU is not working at its entire power. If the factory reset is not working, maybe you should go and replace the device, before it's too late. When you bought it ? If the phone have less than 30 days you should get an instant replace. Not sure that JB will help you, as the installation isn't like a "full format" of your phone
Hard reset: *2767*3855# (no warning message before formating, so type it when you're ready, also remove the sdcard if you don't want wiped too.)
Or *#*#7780#*#* - Factory data reset - Clears Google-account data, system and program settings and installed programs. system will not be deleted, and OEM programs, as well as My Documents (pictures, music, videos)
Thanks. Will get in touch with the vendor for replacement (though I'm sure he will not agree that easily) or else will do a complete reset. I'm really pissed off for spending this much for getting this device. Samsung is very serious in pushing their loyalists away!

Sometimes, there can be some errors. You know, nobody's perfect and we are all humans. After one week after I bought my phone, I found that it have sort of scratch on the screen, but looked like inside of it. It could be seen only in high light. The vendor replaced it instantly. This one is perfect. Love it and is extremely fast and I have many apps on it. Good luck!

Check in task manager, you should have an idea about how is going bad. Also change the antivirus for Avast. Avast is much better. However I recommend without antivirus. I just scan sometimes my phone with it or lookout but never leave the antivirus installed. Is just a waste of RAM memory.
If nothing works do a full backup with Kies and do the complete factory reset.
Most of the apps will be automatically reinstalled when you add back your Google account, but you need the backup for settings and saves.

Even with all the apps I have on my phone the RAM usage is around 580-640 (stupid SwiftKey using 45 mb most of time) and when I kill the apps I have 430 mb, slowly increasing til 530. Try reset, you have nothing to lose.

My worst is network location locator that drains my battery, only just installed bbs yesterday so not sure what all the wakelocks mean or alarms or anything else.
I know media is your downloads and you probably have your apps on auto update.
Doesn't have many instructions.
You must have a very low screen setting for 20% mine is at least at 70 and that's when I have it on auto brightness

You have the media scanner bug. There is no real cure but formatting the external sd card can help.
The simplest solution is just to force close it. It should not return until you reboot .
It's a Samsung issue so until they fix it we just have to live with it

Sorry was late here when I posted, I should have explained.
Run the app from the app drawer, hit the disable Media Scanner button. This will kill the media scanner everytime you reboot (if you are roorted, assume you are). To rescan for media just open the app and then close it.
Check after a reboot to make sure Media is not chewing up the battery. It works for me under JB and also did under GB.
If you use Tasker you should be able to achieve the same thing. So you could just kill that process with Tasker and either run it and kill it at certain times or the author of the above also has an app just called Rescan Media which you could just run via tasker at a given time interval. Personally never found the need but I guess it depends on how much media you actiually hold on your device etc...

Push notifications not working for any apps

Hi everyone,
I've had an issue for a while now that i just realized was a problem. After seeing my girlfriends phone getting instant notifications for snapchat, Facebook, foursquare, and others, while i have to go into those apps to see if anything new has happened, i realize my phone is not working correctly.
I have the elegancia rom, on att, and as far as i can tell every setting in my phone is set to allow them.
Does anyone know why this would be happening? Or suggestions on how to fix or troubleshoot it?
This is very frustrating.

It is because your phone is in deep sleep to save battery when your screen is off. There is an app called "Push Notification Fixer" that solves the problem. I have used it for months, and it's great, it doesn't seem to affect battery life significantly
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5hbmRxbGltYXgucHVzaGZpeGVyIl0.
Would it be in deep sleep even if I'm using the phone? I mean, let's say I'm actively using my phone for an hour. And my friend snapchats me or posts on facebook during that time. i still won't get it unless i open the app.
I tried using push notification fixer for like a day and didn't notice a difference. Does it take time to take effect?
Would juice defender cause any issues with this? I use it daily on the lowest setting.
Also, does auto sync need to be enabled?

Alright, as of now, i have auto sync on. I disabled Juice Derfender, i checked and made sure background data is enabled on apps, checked to make sure notifications are enabled on apps, and also made sure restrict mobile data was unchecked. And i have Push Notifications Fixer installed and running.
Still no luck.
After talking with an htc tech guy. He pointed out that the notification settings are in the privacy menu.
On the elegancia rom there is no privacy menu option in the settings. Maybe this is why?

I also have this problem with facebook, no notifications at all Tried several methods, also from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174391
Currently i have Paranoid Rom on my S3
Edit: Okay, now they are working...
What I have observed is that juice defender / dx battery booster etc do not disable all the settings properly when disabled. So it might be (a possibility) - that it has screwed up your settings.
I am also on Elegancia ROM. ofcourse I have autosync on as well as PNF installed. For me it takes hardly a gap of 2 seconds when I get a notification on my mobile & desktop....
May be you can try to uninstall juicedefender (Check if there is any setting to reset the changes or not before uninstalling).
And one advise - I am not sure about you, but I found all these battery saving apps useless
Hmmmm. Ok. Well, i just switched to the Venom rom and i am experiencing the same issue. I went ahead and uninstalled juice defender completely.
Is there a by lasting settings that could be messed up from it even after uninstalling it?
I'm really on my last nerve. My phone feels crippled and u can't figure out why...

I fixed it! I still don't know exactly what the culprit was but i know it was some system setting that had gotten messed up. It kept following me from rom to rom because i used titanium backup to backup and restore system settings.
I ended up doing a fresh install of viper and installed snapchat first thing. I instantly got a push notification. I proceeded to install all the backups of my other apps and manually at all my phone settings again.
Thanks for all the help everyone!
