If you are ok with not using Kies to do the upgrade, you can use this. Of course, that assumes you're rooted and have CWM installed (which you shouldn't if you are trying to update via Kies), but I'll just leave this here as an alternative solution you can consider.

Better learn some Chinese, go order u some Rosetta stone! Haha jk. But I agree with ^^--- this guy.
(⊙_⊙)

That's Korean, probably since Samsung's Korean. If you wish to stay completely stock, just download the odin tar from sammobile.com and flash it. Of course, that will update your bootloader and give you the bad kernel, but Kies will do the same as well.

Kies is a POS. I tried to upgrade my phone to ICS for sending into warranty, no matter what I did the phone wouldn't connect. I said screw it and left it at 2.3.4.

[Q] Kies cant update after OTA update

My phone received OTA update few days ago to 2.3.6. I installed it , everything went ok . But after update my kies is telling me that phone would not be updated anymore.
your device does not support software upgrading via kies
I9100XWKK2/I9100LUXKJ1/I9100XXKI4/I9100XWKK2
(product code I9100LKALUX , phone is not locked to the operator )
Previously on this place i could see my version and latest version available.
I never rooted my phone, any updates I did were via KIES. It was first time I did OTA update.
Did anyone had similar problems? Any recommendations on solution?
thanks a lot in advance

I tried to find similar problem on the forum but so far without any luck.
What csc are you on?

Sorry I'm new here
Where can I check this ?
I always stayed on official updates and didn't use anything else than kies to update.
Sorry just realised it's LUX

Hi,
I've got the same problem (it's not really a problem yet) as you. I've applied the OTA-update and I'm getting the same message in KIES (I have the same CSC).
If it won't be possible to update my phone via KIES in the future, I guess I'll either have to download the next update via FUS and use Odin to flash it or just revert to 2.3.5 again ;-).
Greetings,
düstaaa
Wait for the next update .
But it makes little sense to me Update then check days later for another update .
Their is a possibility that the OTA updates are set to only update via OTA in the future .
jje
For my part I didn't check for another update, I just connected my phone to my PC to backup my contacts and some other stuff, hence I saw the message in KIES. I thought I'ld google it and found this thread. ;-)
But yes, there's nothing else to do but wait.
Same here I didn't checked for update , just connect phone to PC and see this in big letters. So it makes me worry a bit, if something went wrong or not.
Looks like the problem was on Samsung server side. After one week Kies start working as usual . No more "Kies can't update.." message
I guess it's because the 2.3.6 update can now be applied via KIES.

[Q] Software Updates not supported

Hi guys
I have the following problem
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII
I rooted my phone and now i heard that android 4.0 will come soon
so i wanted to restore my phone and get original firmware again
at this time i had litening rom 6.1 on my phone
then i restored a backup with clockworkmod recovery to a state before installing this firmware
then i unrooted my phone with SuperOneClick 1.9.1 and flashed the original KF4 kernel
These steps went very well and now here is my problem:
I'm not able to get firmware updates via kies any more
Kies doesn't search for updates, because it says, that my phone doesn't support updates via kies
Hope somebody can help me
Sorry ,I also have the problem
Find the stock firmware for your carrier in here or stock firmware for your country in here & flash that.
A clean flash of stock (as opposed to using a backup as you did) should enable you to use Kies to get official firmware updates.

The other thing is, Did you screw around with and change your CSC? I believe it may have an impact on Kies updates as you are trying to update a phone with the wrong firmware and country code...

[Q] How to update with kies after installing a custom ROM

Pretty much installed XXKG6 on my SGS2 ages ago using ODin, check back a couple of months later and saw i had missed out on loads of updates. I really do not have time in my life to update my phone manually every other day.
My phone still works with Kies perfectly but i can't update/go back to official firmware which you get from kies. Unable to update to Samsung's newest firmware. How can get it back to working like when i first got my phone? When i could just plug it in and Kies did all the work while i go off and do something else. Also do i need a USB jig?

Hey,
should be work, when u flash back to an older stock rom like "KJ3" (without root or anything).
So Kies recognized that it's not the newest and so update to it.
U can check this thread for firmware and install guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Much success.

I will give it a go now, Thanks for the quick reply by the way.
Would it be best to install something like "XWKE2" i think that might of been the original firmware what come with my phone and it also says "Generic XEU (UK)" which is where I'm from so that might help too?
Cheers for the help mate!
Okay i can see
"+++++++[Frankenstein Firmwares]+++++++
These packages below are not official firmware packages, they are Frankenstein package created due to demand for Firmware with different CSC and modems and also leaked firmware packages. KIES will not recognise the firmware so you won't be able to update to new firmware using KIES unless you flash back to a firmware meant for your device first. Otherwise there will always be Odin to use for updates"
Explains why i couldn't update with kies. But now i have tried installing a number of the official firmwares. Half of them boot loop and never turn on. The other half turn on but i get no service and every couple of seconds something pops up about having to force close com.phone.android or something. Plus it no longer connects to Kies.
Please help me out

HELP ICS!

Hey all my gf has the samsung galaxy s2 and she went to about phone > update settings etc, downloaded all of it for the new ICS that come out how when she enters her passcode its says app wizard isnt responding.. :S Any help
Maybe you flash a stock ics rom with odin.. make sure you select the .tar file in the right way...
Sent from my hybrid SII with the power of ParanoidAndroid and Fluxi kernel
It was a stock rom?... :S I just didnt seem to boot correctly, she has the Galaxy S2 GT-19100 Nothing was installed that could possiblely cause something like that aka ROOTED, Flash Rom, ETC. it was just stock
if you don't want to bother with manually upgrading using odin but rather have the comfort like the ota update, you could also just connect the phone to the pc and let kies do the updating for you.
or if you know your way around the phone, clear the cache of the system updater app and try again, or use odin and flash it manually, but that won't spare you from installing kies as well, if you don't want to bother with rooting and stuff, you might as well use kies in the first place.
It wasnt rooted, she updated it using the OVER THE AIR updates, got one and updated it..then got one saying ICS and updated it. the update for the ics just turns on gets to the lockscreen, enter the code then that second it flashes and says "Setup wizard has failed" Then nothing just a black screen no icons nothing, it wasnt rooted it was all a offical update. Now, wouldnt Restoring it with odin void the warrenty and wouldnt it mess it up?.

No... Odin flashes with official firmwares do NOT increase counter or void warranty. Counter keeps track of how many kernels (NOT firmwares) that are NOT signed by Samsung are flashed via Odin. Official firmwares from Samsung contain kernels signed by Samsung, so they do NOT increase the counter.
Im looking at Sammobile are there firmware offical?
I think its a GT-I9100 Australia On 3 or unlocked i cant remeber
Still plugs into kies but restore failed at the end..-.-"

The site isn't officially Samsung affiliated, but the firmwares are downloaded from Samsung, then posted there. They're about as official as you can get without downloading it directly from Samsung yourself.

Samsung's Kies software will not connect to my phone

I get the following error message:
This device is not supported by Kies 2.0
Make sure that your device is supported and try again.
And this is using the latest version of Kies.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
I remember it started to the proccess to root my phone, but then I wasn't very succesfull with it, so I abandoned it, but otherwise it should be stock firmware (its one of the first few steps on the xda guides).
TIA

Kies cannot root your phone .
Probable buggered firmware if you tried something and stopped .
Initial try is to backup data and factory reset phone .
Fails then flash your original firmware via Odin .
Alternative use XDA to update by flashing stock firmware .

Synch then with Google
Is that the only way? Because I don't want to do it that way.
Is there a way to check if my phone is rooted? Because I'm sure I didn't complete the process, but I just need to confirm that.
Also, I think I only got as far as trying the procedure for "triangle away", numerous times, but it didn't quite work for me, so I left it.
Is there a way to "untriangle away" after checking if it was done?
TIA
you can search 3rd party backup & restore application in playstore. you can try "my backup"

Hi, I went through the same problem and fixed it.
First uninstall Kies from your PC and make sure you doesn't leave behind any files.
Uninstallation of the software and the drivers installed by Kies I suggest using Revo uninstaller to do that.
Uninstall it from your PC then make a fresh installation.
Open Kies but do not connect your phone, if it wants to update Kies, go ahead and do it.
Close Kies, connect your phone and open Kies.
That should fix it.
It happened to me when I updated Kies while my phone was connected. Do try the steps above hopefully it should help. Kies is a crappy software to be honest. Samsung should really get their act up and code a better/stable program.
If that doesn't help, then probably something went wrong while rooting. The simplest and best option would be to flash the Stock rom back on your phone. That's very simple to do.
Follow this thread to get back to stock rom [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32980712&postcount=6]
PS: The stock rom link on this thread is linked to JB if I'm not wrong, I would suggest going on www.sammobile.com/firmware and downloading the correct stock rom for your phone.
Hope I helped

That worked perfectly.
Thanks.
Also, since I'm using a phone with INU region, I can't upgrade it to 4.1.1
Someone else bought a phone, and I was working on it for them, and out of the box, it asked for firmware upgrade. Lucky guy!

There are apps on the play store which can check if your phone is rooted. Search for "check root".
The triangle away procedure is optional. You don't really have to do it.
It will just reset your counter so that it seems as if you didn't make any changes.
This is useful if you have to return the phone for warranty.
To backup your contacts I would also suggest to sync them with Google.
It's easier to manage your contacts via your web browser and you always have a backup.
You can also export those contacts from Google to other formats so you can import them later on other phones/programs.
Of course there are also other options... you could copy them to your SIM or use 3th party apps.
I would suggest G Cloud.
It is an app that will backup your Contacts, SMS Messages, Call logs, System settings, Pictures, ... and a lot more
You can choose what to backup. It'll back it up in the Cloud. You have 1GB free storage which is enough.
After a factory reset or installation of a new ROM you si;ply reinstall the software and restore your backup.
I only use it to backup my SMS messages. I like to keep them all.
Good luck

Even I'm on INU region. Are you from India? If so, you can't upgrade to 4.1.1 yet because Samsung hasn't updated the firmware for the region as of now. Jelly Bean is expected to arrive sometime around mid of November if not earlier. And the firmware upgrade out of the box isn't 4.1 update. Its a security patch recently released by Samsung.
I'm from India, but now I'm using this phone outside of India regulary.
I was thinking of using a SIM card from India, but I would have to cut it manually, and then also I wouldn't be sure if it was cut properly.
The firmware upgrade out of the box is for 4.0.4, which is still ICS.
Can I just change INU to another country, and then get the update? And then revert it back to INU when I need to send it in for warranty?
Also, it's surprising that Samsung hasn't released an update for INU, because I'm pretty sure it was one of the launch markets, as well as one of their biggest markets.

Yes, India is getting INU update 1st week of November or the 2nd. Samsung are market leaders here and JB updates have been confirmed.
There is a way to change from INU on your phone by changing your CSC ID. The CSC is location specific, so if you change your ID to some country where S3 has been given the JB update. You 'might' get it. Though I'm not sure of this method.
Instructions For Changing CSC:
Download Samsung Galaxy S / S2 CSC app from the Play Store
Open Samsung Galaxy S / S2 CSC app
Tap "Change CSC" button
Select the CSC for you Country
Tap "Install" button (Keep in mind changing CSC wipes your device)
I have never tried changing the CSC on my phone so I'm unsure of the credibility of the method above. Do take backup before changing it.
personally ive found kies is flawed and dont really like it
