Currently, I have the iPad 2. I do, however, miss android and its customizable aspect. So I was offered by someone to swap my iPad 2 for his Galaxy Tab 10.1
Before swapping, I did went to the nearest Bestbuy to see what the hype was all about. I am pretty disappointed with the browser and the onscreen keyboard. Typing was a pain, and in conjunction with Google's autocomplete feature, it was a nightmare.
By running Quadrant Standard twice, I got scores ranging from 1550-1700. Which was pretty horrid for a dual core processor. I noticed that the fps on each test (2d-3d) range from 15fps-30fps. I have the Samsung Fascinate as my smartphone, and it goes up to 56fps during the graphic tests.
The model that I played around with was not running TouchWiz or maybe it is not updated.
I am mostly concerned on how the device runs after third-party launchers, root, themes, etc. are installed.
Is the interface still sluggish? is the onscreen keyboard still horrid?
I'm currently running stock Touchwiz and yeah it has its glitches, but it's not horrid. I also own the iPad 2 and it has its glitches once in a while too! I like both devices! I could do more on my GTab of course, but I get more smoothness on my iPad 2. They each have pros and cons! Lol
If you don't like the stock keyboard on the GTab you can always change it! I like to use Swiftkey on mine.
Quadrant doesn't get along with stock HC 3.1, so the score is pretty meaningless. On literally every other rom (HC 3.0, TouchWiz etc) normal Quadrant scores should be in the mid 2k's.
The typing lag and wonky cursor that was a problem when typing in web forms has been fixed in the TouchWiz update.
While I've seen some people complain about lag with the launcher, I've never experienced it myself. Regardless, there are optimized launchers available if you flash a deodexed TW rom, and launchers like ADW also work fine on the tablet.

Hey, if you miss customization, then go for the tab, I say. When I used the ipad1 before, staring at those generic iOS homescreen with its sterile grid, indistinguishable icons, horrid folders, lack of widgets was pretty depressing, to me at least.
Yes, you'll run into some glitches. But custom kernels, roms, apps can remedy many of them, while Honeycomb and Touchwiz has already been getting better over time. That GT10.1 seems to have attracted some awesome devs is a plus too.
Yes, you may miss some favorite apps. But most likely there will be similar ones for android, or they will some make there appearance as tablets gain market share. There are yet no ipad-only killer apps that make it too much of a pain to cross over to the tab.
And on top of having your very own customized tab, with docks, apps, widgets individualized and optimized for your own self, imho, the tab even outshines the ipad in terms of
Better for watching or streaming movies (16:9 ratio, play more codex, a gorgeous screen),
Better web-browsing (flash of course, as well as higher pixel count to take in the whole website),
and arguably better e-reading (TW ebook app is quite versatile and easy on the eye, and I enjoy the landscape two-page mode reading which utilizes the widescreen)
as well as better sound (you can get voodoo control with pershoots kernel and bluetooth is amazing)
All which I think are the mainstays of a tablet experience.
Maybe note taking is another, in which the HTC Flyer may be better, but then with swype or thumbkeyboard, or an optional bluetooth keyboard, note taking is at least just as good as the ipad2.
And you won't be sacrificing the sleek form factor (GT10.1 is lighter and thinner, marginally, than ipad2) as you would have to if you went for a different android tab (at least until the Sony S1 comes out, which we'll have to see to be sure).
So, that's my take on why if I was in your shoes, I'd go for the Galaxy Tab 10.1
I should add, to me, whereas the ipad was mainly a portrait mode experience, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is mainly a landscape mode experience. Should consider and be comfortable of that too - especially in terms of customizing your tablet homescreens. It's one thing that makes it quite different and more exciting than customizing a smartphone.

As with any android vs apple comparison, I think it kind of comes down to how much you like tweaking and customizing, while having to occasionally find workarounds and deal with a still developing ecosystem. If you'd rather not bother with any of that then stick with the iPad.
GTab 10.1 with Honeycomb has a lot of potential. I will probably keep my iPad 2 and snag one off office depot with a 100$ coupon for any tablet.
I've decided to keep the iPad 2 due to the fact that, unfortunately, bought a ton of productivity apps from the app store already. Furthermore, by keeping it and getting GTab 10.1, I can enjoy both worlds. Just need to feed the hungry android inside me.
Love android os. Hope that ice cream sandwich is as tasty as it looks.

I have both. Bought the Galaxy Tab and got the iPad 2 through my school. One thing the iPad has going for itself is that it's a really smooth experience. What it does, it does well. Unfortunately, that's all it does though. There's just nothing else to do with it besides running apps and browsing the internet. If you need something to satisfy your inner geek I would definitely go with the Tab.
From your post I take that you already know all this and are mainly wondering how the Tab holds up performance wise. It's great! I'm running the latest Starburst with pershoots kernel overclocked to 1.4 and the sucker flies. It beats the iPad on almost every webpage rendering test I've put the two to. Google maps is light years ahead of the iPad version and the browsing experience is great since the TouchWiz update.
In the end it's a personal decision. Lets just say that MY iPad is collecting dust on the shelf.

I can compare specs on my own. My question is for the people who have both the NC and NT.
When I owned the NC (11/2010 - 3/2011) I enjoyed it but I thought the display was just ok. Have they improved it. In particular I hated the touch resolution of the NC. The sides and corners were not really responsive and in some games the touch was off. Has the NT improved this?
I'm still waiting to see how it develops before I buy. Which will have the better hacks, the Fire or the NT? I'm on the fence for both right now. I really want a 7inch with 3G but am not liking what's out there at the moment. Any suggestions on the 3/4G front?

With regard to the touch sensitivity, the stock NT firmware is far better than the CM7 build for the NC. I am not sure about the stock NC firmware as I haven't been running that on my NC for several months. I always had problems with buttons and keyboard elements at the edge of the screen on my NC...this is not an issue on the NT.
Regarding development, the locked bootloader on the NT has put a serious damper on the ability to develop for the device. There is currently no hack for this, though there are a few people working to crack it open. Who knows when or if this is ever going to happen. Without cracking the bootloader, we cannot load custom ROMs on the NT. The Kindle Fire does not have a locked bootloader. You can expect development to proceed much faster for the Fire than for the NT, at least until they get the bootloader unlocked (and if that even ever happens).
Despite the locked bootloader, I am quite happy with my NT. Rooted and filled with sideloaded/downloaded apps it runs very well and is much snappier that its ancestor the Nook Color.
On the data side when I'm not home, I tether to my Evo 3d. The data speeds are horrible but it's nice to look at a 7 inch screen loading than a 4.3 inch one!
Touch seems quite a bit better. The corners work and if you click a link on a page you get the one you clicked, not the one below.

I never ran the color on anything other than cm7, but the screen is a lot more responsive on the nt.
the locked bootloader really is a bummer, it may make me wind up going back to my color in the long run.
I used a stock Nook Color for the first time this weekend which contained no additional apps other than stock.
I thought the NC's stock browser was awful. Page renditions & refreshes, and app launches were also very slow.
To those who own both the NC and NT, how does this compare with the stock Nook Tablet? Is the NT better?
I did briefly play around with the NT at B&N about 10 days ago. It seemed okay.
I was comparing the Nook Tablet side by side with my Archos 70IT, which has a 1ghz single-core processor(8g mem., 256 meg of RAM. I use Zeam 3.1.7 launcher with Android 2.2 OS (Archos 2.1.8 firmware).
Just for full disclosure I think Archos firmware support and customer support sucks, every firmware upgrade breaks more than it fixes.
The NT's display only seemed only just slightly better, with both tablet displays at max brightness (Archos 70IT has 800 x 480 res.).
The NT's performance with the two-core 1ghz processor and 1 gig RAM did not seem to be dramatically better either. I was expecting more robust performance.
I am in the market for a new 7-inch Android tablet for under $ 300. I will never buy an Archos product ever again. I'm probably going to pass on the NT, as it does not exhibit any significant improvement over my Archos 70it.

While initially I had planned on getting a nook tablet and rooting it seeing as it has a gig of ram and a gig processor...I noticed these other two devices and was wondering if its worth (at best buy) the extra 10 bucks for the acer iconia a100 which has been confirmed will be getting ICS or go with the player thats 10 bucks cheaper but not as big screen. I will be getting the amazon kindle fire for my wife (she likes how it handles best). Overall I know hardware wise the nook tablet seems to be the best bet (right now). How much of a hassel is it to root/custom rom it? (when I had my droid eris back in the day I rooted and modded the crap outta that so I'm used to that). Is it worth saving 10 bucks and going with the samsung player and not having to really worry about rooting but having 2 inches less....or going the acer iconia a100 and spending 10 bucks more again not having to root..but not having a gig of ram....or stay with the nook tablet choice and root it?
Can't speak for the other two options, but the NT is a nice device. Root is simple. Custom software is still in the early stages of development. As such, there is a scheduled Tuesday (tentative) release of the current test version on CM7. There is development of an ICS CM9 ROM in process as well. But there are no ETAs on anything alpha or beta.
My problem with the A100 is the poor battery life, plus i think the nook still has the better screen.. especially for reading if that's something you'll be doing.
The samsung player is nice hardware and works really well.. plus you get gps, camera etc.. but for me the screen is too small especially for reading.. but movies are nice.

Rooting the nook is cake... especially with the SD card method... and there are lots of guides here on the forum.. Once that is done you can get lots of apps..
But ultimately... you need to figure out what you want from the "tablet" and go from there..
I have what amounts to an unlimited toy budget, so I have the Samsung 5, the NC, the NT, the NST and one of the Asus Transformers.
I carry the Samsung wherever I go. I like it a lot, it's far more portable than the even the NC/NT or NST. I use Newsrob to read news articles on it, and listen to the BBC on it at night via TuneIn.
Eventually, I may give the NC away - the NT completely replaces it for my purposes.
I'll probably sell the Transformer at some point. Yes, it's big, shiny and sorta fast, and the games look great, but it's also big and shiny - the screen is not as good as the NC/NT because there's much more internal reflection. It's not very portable, and I find that I really don't like Honeycomb because you have to copy files to a Honeycomb device via the MTP interface or via wifi; I like being able to copy directly over the USB interface and synch stuff with Calibre - not an option over the MTP.
I like the NST for times when I'll be away from power for a bit, and because magazines on the NST are real epubs, none of that newfangled ehanced magazine stuff. So you can read them in any epub reader you like.

I can't vouch for the others either but have my fair share of "tablets". I have used this nt more than any of them and I think the simple reason is size. It is the perfect balance of size and weight. I don't do any heavy gaming but feel that it offers a great environment for reading, browsing, email and tinkering. 2" less of screen real estate would in my opinion make it to small and 2" more is uncomfortable to balance. This nt is the sweet spot for me. Sitting up, laying down, portrait, landscape, it's all good.
The hardware you get for the price (especially if you can grab it for $199) is unmatched. Rooting is cake and development is starting to heat up.
I doubt you would be disapointed but in keeping with your question I'd say its between the nt and the acer.
I'll probably go nook tablet since hardware superiority over software inferiority(which can be fixed by rooting) seems to be the route to go. Here's another wrench into the question that I THINK I know the answer: is the nook tablet an upgrade from an iPod touch 4g? I realize I will be losing camera features and access to the tons of apps iTunes has, but once rooted I have android market. Any views on this? Basically looking for the "laptop lite" device...but bigger than my ipod and added feature of one handed computing while holding my daughter reading a book
Just want to let you know that the A100 does have 1GB of ram, the 512mb is a typo on their website. (you can find 1GB corrections and printed on the box) You can probably stretch the battery life to 6 hours with minimum brightness and wifi on.
well shoot..now that that has a gig of ram..makes things interesting...although one common factor I've seen listed almost everywhere IS horrible life with the acer as well as issues with viewing the screen unless you're viewing it straight on.
I was in Best Buy looking to purchase a tablet in November and saw the Acer for $250 and the salesperson told me they were sold out (only kept 5 in store). They had plenty of Nook tablets and sice I didn't want to wait, I purchased the Nook. I took it home and lset it up and was immediately impressed by the sharp and bright screen over the Acer but I was not happy at all with the default home manager. I fired up the internet and did a search and it brought me to this forum. Since late November, I have rooted the device amongst other hacks and recently installed CM7 alpha. I prefer Go Launcher over ADW home manager so I used NoBloat and Homemanager apk's so that I could switch to Go Launcher and install the Twitter and Facebook widgets. I had to fix permissions and i WIPED THE Develick cache and everything seems very responsive and smooth (i turn off all animations). Everything can be accessed on one homescreen (thanks to Go Launcher) and with cm7, no more problems with default Google widgets not loading. Once Bluetooth and Overclocking is added to the kernel (see cm7 post) the NT will be hard to beat.

The iPad-2 cannot be beat when it comes to choice of apps and overall experience. My only problem with iPad is that any file I need to upload to my device has to be done with iTunes. And since I switch computers, iTunes is constantly removing stuff from my iPad. This for me a deal killer.
As for the other two tablets: NT and A100. I prefer by far the experience on the A100, everything is available from Google market. I don't need to sideload anything. It is multitouch, meaning that I can play piano, or other games that require more than 2 points to be recognized on the screen. The only issue I have with it is that its screen is not as bright as the NT. the A100 I own has only 8 gigs of storage, so I need to add more storage, but it is not a big problem since it has a microSD slot.
As for the NT, it's at best a glorified ereader. I don't have access to the full 16 GB of internal memory. It only recognizes 2 points on the screen. This is enough for a large number of apps, but a deal breaker for many interesting apps. I need to use Root Explorer to move files around. I rooted my NT to deal with some of the restrictions, but this is not a perfect solution. At best, it's a stop-gap solution. I can't use Google maps, as it needs my location, and I haven't figured out how to do it. The screen on the NT is definitely brighter than the A100, but it's not a big selling point in my opinion.
All in all, if I had to choose between the two, I would definitely go with the A100. It's an easy choice for me.

You can access all the internal memory once rooted and permissions set correctly. Google maps is functional as is, but if you want to use navigator, you need to use app such as GPS tether. I am rooted using go launcher, but kept all the B&N bloat and am very pleased with the NT. I think it's great value for the money. Could it be better? Sure, but what couldn't? CM7 and CM9 will only make the NT even more attractive.

Stock with all the apps loaded and the system not cleaned up, yes the tablet will be a lot slower, the displays anywhere will almost never give you the real experience because its soo overwhelmed with crap to show how fast it is. If you keep tasks killed via the Samsung task killer and don't just leave the tablet to fend for itself then it will be just as fast as your phone, for a faster than phone experiance, root, and install task 14 or overcome and your tablet will cruise and do so much more and fastern than your phone
At least we couldn't brick our cell phones back in the 80s ... they were already bricks

I feel you dude, the tab is seriously slow on touch widz 3.1. Since its using the slowest dual core, the tegra 2.
My sgs2 is much faster in every way. Even apps are smoother.
Flash overcome rom made it much better since its upgraded to 3.2.
But still slower than a phone.
Finally the kang ics rom made it on par in terms on UI smoothness.
Sorry you receive so much bad comments here. Most people don't feel the pain.
After spending so much money, naturally we expect the best experience out of the box.
Sgs2 is great, superbly smooth without the need of any mod or custom roms.
But the tab out of the box experience is just bad.
Don't be a whiner, you already bought the tab, learn the flash custom rom and you'll be happy,
Despite being slower than sgs2, I still prefer using the tab as bigger screen is really much comfortable for browsing.
@Ray1, It isn't the whole idea of raging at someone over a touch device, Hell even the first Glofish/Windows based touch phones were slow as HELL, I just feel that people have forgotten what it's like to have, I don't know, patience?
Sure it's a smart device, but also realize that the loading is based on how much information it has to process, Compare a 4" screen to something that is 10" it's like comparing Windows 95 and Windows XP, In a 4" device you would have everything served asap only because the DPI is lesser compared to the tablet, I feel that your comparison of the fastest smartphone in the market at the moment versus the tablet which was supposed to be an upgrade of the 7" tablet is somewhat unfair. I guess some people can't learn to appreciate, and it's all about bringing up the "car theory" of what is the fastest.
Just so you know, no offence in any of this, but the tablet was built to handle ICS. If the Google Nexus was running HC or Gingerbread, you would even rage at how horribly slow it is. Don't blame the system for being slow, blame the OS, just a minor update, Smartphones had the evolution of smoothness from Eclair>Froyo>Gingerbread where as tablet's are still in their first era of figuring out its era of smoothness, however ICS is the perfection of what HC had failed to provide and they just didn't care about pushing it out onto the next HC update because it would be pointless to try and fix something that was way past it's testing phase, better example would be trying to upgrade a Windows XP when you have an i7, you wouldn't touch the XP now that you have an i7 now would you?

@xcly - Yes you are right it seems. Many smartphones are faster than tablets.
My wife's Droid (something) I can't remember the model, I just tested switched screens instantly while my tablet takes a second to render the graphics and move to a different screen. Sorry you're disappointed with your purchase.

You should definitely try out the cm9 pre alpha build, my tablet was equally as slow, almost unbearably, to the point where there was lag when using the keyboard. But cm9 is quick and speedy and if you don't mind losing the camera on ur tab for awhile definitely worth the update.
ah well at least i know i'm not alone in this tablet slowness :/
you know.. i would've rooted it the first second i got it out of the box but it's not just for my own use so really don't have a choice on flashing a better ROM
will probably have to get meself a new phone instead lol
Tablets are also pushing more pixels than a phone with the same processor hence the UI lag

its been awhile since i check this thread.
seems that some post were deleted. lol...
seeing how long post gets deleted, i shall keep my opinions as brief as possible.
excuse for tab10 being slow due to big screen resolution is invalid.
galaxy note and tab 7.7 similar resolution, but they are very smooth with no lag.
great experience out of the box.
reason: they use the exynos chipset similar to sgs2.
the performance is great. such as loading apps, actually running them, scrolling, rotating. there is virtually no lag.
My hate here, and rant, is mainly towards NVIDEA and their hopelessly weak procerssor and GPU. tegra2 is failure, tarnish android image. so sad that all first gen tablet uses it. makes majority average users feel android is slow.
lets make playing field fair and compare base on category.
tablet: tab7.7 powns tab10.1 and every other tegra2 tab out there. benchmark and real life usage.
phones: sgs2 powns lg optimus 2x and motorola atrix(use tegra2 as well). if want to be more fair, just compare optimus 2x, since atric has qhd screen.
i always knew tab10.1 use tegra2, but i still bought it thinking there isn much difference(i was so naive at that time). but its really really bad. HC makes it even worst. as the thread starter mention, its really a shame tab slower than phone.
look at the competition. i'm not apple fan, but i admit it, ipad2 is just soooo smooth and fast. (of cos it has its limitation and weakness), but over all user experience is smooth. the tab10.1 in the out of the box state is just.....sad.(dont want to elaborate).
i'm not a whiner. since i spend so much $$ for it.
i force myself to learn about rooting, and flashing rom. now on kang ICS, the performance is in the acceptable range.
tegra2, the first dual core, also the weakest and slowest.
tegra3, first quad core. but i'm not interested, will wait and see what TI and samsung offer.
take a look how tegra 3 get powned by TI's dual core.
being the first does not guarantee good performance.

look at the competition. i'm not apple fan, but i admit it, ipad2 is just soooo smooth and fast. (of cos it has its limitation and weakness), but over all user experience is smooth. the tab10.1 in the out of the box state is just.....sad.(dont want to elaborate).
i'm not a whiner. since i spend so much $$ for it.
i force myself to learn about rooting, and flashing rom. now on kang ICS, the performance is in the acceptable range.
tegra2, the first dual core, also the weakest and slowest.
tegra3, first quad core. but i'm not interested, will wait and see what TI and samsung offer.
take a look how tegra 3 get powned by TI's dual core.
being the first does not guarantee good performance.

Completely agree. Nvidia is the main problem with HC tablets. Remove tegra 2 and instantly awsome tablet

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 with MIUI.
I have a P7500 3G with CM9 KANG ICS.
I have used both for web browsing and I did see my phone as faster until I set my CPU of my tablet to 1.4ghz.
It really has made a difference and my tablet browsing is awesome and quick.
I would also try using the Google Chrome Beta Browser. It makes web browsing a dream
Is there any way of speeding up the scrolling between homescreens? I prefer not to root.
Also for me the speed is disappointing. Used to the Ipad and Galaxy S2.
Without widgets it is somewhat faster but widgets is the nr. 1 reason to go for Android.

Wow this thread is over a year old now lol. You can't do much without rooting I'm afraid..
Disable all system apps you don't use and see if that makes any difference. Otherwise, it's root and freeze more apps or flash custom roms.

As the topic says i am seriously thinking about buying a 32 GB STS but i have a couple of questions first.
1: Is it good/better in comparison to other tablets out there today in the same pricerange?
2: How is ICS on it?
3: Does it need root or is it good even without it? (Asking mainly because i read if ICS is on it already it isn´t possible to root it)
4: How is the support from the community and Sony?
I am not a newbie when it comes to android, coming from a Samsung galaxy s and currently using SGS2... but i have no experience in tablets, except for the crappy aPad i have.
So, if there are any other reasons to why i should get one please tell me
I already know about the IR and playstation certified which are the two main reasons i am looking at this tablet.

The screen seems better and the general feel of it to me was more polished than others I tried. You have the built in ir & media control which gives it an advantage over the competition and flash over the ipad.

Pass, patiently awaiting it in the UK, my only bugbear is direct access to the SD card which root or ICS fixes.

See above, I'm happy as it is apart from direct SD card access, but ICS is smoother and adds this as far as I know.
4: How is the support from the community and Sony?
Sony are no better or worse than any manufacturer that I know of but the support and information on this forum is second to none.
Since having mine I have realised a few things, I use it a lot more for stuff I didn't think I would at first (ie. Playing ps1 games etc.) And havnt used it as much for stuff that I thought I would like music and web browsing.
I have rooted mine on honeycomb but I am going to install the pre-rooted ics as soon as my sd card turns up.
The only drawback to having the sony tablet S for me is the lack of sales... it means simply that there are less devs working on things like unlocking the bootloader and although it wouldn't be the end of the world if we never get to make custom roms it would still be nice.
If the only thing you are after is to flash roms and customise it like crazy id say get a galaxy tab. Otherwise the sony is the daddy!

I am not looking to flash/customise it like crazy, it´s good to know that root isn´t that important for it as it seems but if i manage to get it with HC preinstalled i might root it (if it has the right kernel) and be happy with that.
The lack of sales and support is a little disturbing though, but since it is android most things are applicable from other devices... right?
Honestly i must say i am a little sick of samsung because of the UI, like i said in my main post i had a SGS1 and use a SGS2 now but i am thinking about leaving that aswell for some other phone... but that is another story.
The screen is probably the most important thing on a device IMO and i did go to a local store and compare the Sony with a few other devices like the iPad and Samsung, the Sony felt more responsive...
And the more i look at it and search the web i am getting more and more convinced to get a Sony tablet and we can always hope that something happens in the dev part for this tablet but if not i hope i wont regret buying it... but coming from a chinese piece of crap like the AverMedia 6850 aPad i think i will be very happy

What really struck me about the tablet what how natural it felt to hold & use compared with the standard 'flat' tablets.
For me, I've surprised myself with hoe much I use it - I now use to to control pretty much every bit of electronic kit in my living room. I use the IR to control TV/BluRay/AMP/XBOX (yes, even the xbox, though not for gaming, of course). I can then turn on my HTPC from it, and stream music to my AMP using the Sony as the playlist editor, or pick a film to watch from XBMC, read about it on the tablet, hit play, and it's on screen.
It was intended to be (and still is, really) a luxury 'do I really need it' but now value it (and use it) more than my phone to be honest

I wouldn't worry about the UI. Like you say on your galaxy s2... you should try MIUI.US rom, it will be like having a new phone. I'm using it on my desire z. however like I say, to me the UI is the least important part of choosing a device mainly because android itself is so customisable with icons/launchers/themes/widgets etc..
