[Q] Palm to pause feature not working - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: I originally asked a question but to prevent spamming I changed the title, ignore the first few posts.
I recently just found out that I had a swipe palm to screenshot feature and a pause/play music with the palm of your hand, I've tried to do it and it does not work, I've even looked on Youtube at tutorials and I get as close as I can and it doesn't do anything (Yes, I have enabled them)

Because the US one has a different cpu and gpu and also LTE.

Ohhhhh, that makes me feel a little better. I was actually considering selling the phone and trying to import internationally, my mistake!
Cheers guys

It wouldn't work on mine either but I personally find it easier to press pause with one finger rather than looking like a fool by palm slapping my phone

I can't stand how good this phone feels in my hand and what bugs me the most is how smooth the phone is i absolutly hate it! !!!!

Honestly, one thing I do hate is not being able to hit menu with my right thumb comfortably. Wish they swapped it with the search key.

Yeah, I hate that, as well as the lack of a hardware home button capable of waking the device. I also hate that I can't seem to record both sides of a phone call like I could on the international version. And also that wallpapers are not scrollable. I really like the white version, though, and the screen quality is a little better than my other one. LTE is nice, too. But I digress, this thread is supposed to be about hate.
2 things that actually bother me right now
-How slow it charges
-Google Music's interface is all messed up because it thinks it's a tablet.

I had the Samsung Captivate, Samsung Infuse and now this. All of the samsung phone feels too smooth and yes TOO SLIM to be used without a case. I bought a slim case with some grip on it to solve this problem.
I've had all the galaxys and for this bein a stock Rom the battery has bein absolutly awesome i haven't had to carry my charger with me i traded my international note for this at&t one and i don't regret it one bit

My only issue with my phone is that my keyboard can't keep up with my typing rate thanks to the occasional pauses when touching the screen.
Atleast I can touch the screen for more than 3 seconds without it ignoring all input for another 10 seconds like the atrix.
I have zero issues hitting the home button or typing 1 handed

Well we didnt exactly expect a 1hour charge with this big battery I dont think but I feel a custom rom could remedy this soon.
I really hate the text background color.

Yes you can reassign it though you will have to be rooted for this to work. You can use root explorer go to /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl. Before going into the file make sure you have read write selected. Then click on the file and open in text editor. Simply replace the word "search" with any of the 3 touchkeys name save the file and reboot. I believe rootexplorer automatically makes a backup of the old file though it's as simple as placing the words back to get back to "stock". This is very safe, Ive done it a hundred times on my Captivate, and it should not harm your device in anyway but I'm not responsible if you somehow screw up your device.

I hate that my Note's GPS works perfectly.
Now I don't have an excuse to tell my wife why I need to upgrade to the next greatest phone that may be coming out!
Lack of ICS.
Some of you guys are complaining about frivolous things like lack of ICS when you know damn well its coming soon.
My only complaint is the back cover is a ***** to put back on--completely.
My complain is that the s pen is so nice and smooth that it went on the wrong hole, and now my s pen smells like ****

Scrolling Lag/Elastic

I went into a Carphone Warehouse in the UK today and also a Vodafone shop to have a play with the new SIII and I am absolutely deflated to find that it exhibits quite extreme "lag" or "elastic" scrolling in the menus and in general in the UI. You can see exactly the effect I'm talking about here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DuMZRkBvlw and on the SIII it's actually even worse. It was actually the same on the SII with most of the ICS roms so it seems that this is for some bizarre reason by design and not a bug of some sort?
Why on Earth would Samsung actually CHOOSE to implement this kind of "elastic" delay to finger scrolling? I cannot think of a good reason for them to set it up that way? It's definitely NOT an ICS issue because the HTC One X doesn't have this problem at all - so someone somewhere at Samsung has actually decided to put this in!!!???
Why have NONE of the SIII reviews I've read mentioned this infuriating effect during scrolling? I'm not all that sensitive - I have to emphasise that the effect on the SII and now the SIII is actually quite extreme. The SIII is now even worse than the SII!
Can this be fixed by devs in some way? I think the video I linked to above is essential to understand what I mean. It's NOT slowness because the phone is underpowered or not optimised. It seems to be a crazy design descision on the part of Samsung? I didn't see any fixes to it on the SII threads and the custom ROMS for the SII didn't address the problem either. I can't be the only one to notice this?
Any feedback would be very interesting.... I simply love the SIII but it's an absolute deal-breaker if the "elastic" effect is delayed to such an extreme... It drives me mad!
Oh I just asked if the SIII was like this in the vs one x thread. It was one of my biggest quirks with the SII, but you could actually change the sensitivity if rooted. It improved vastly, but never as good as on the one x. Samsung implemented a high pixel delay(if that's the right wording) for some reason.

Don't notice it, touchscreen reacts before I put my finger on it :s it's really fast
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
omitting the lag, elastic scrolling is a feature of ics updates, its much better than the normal scrolling.
if elastic scrolling is present in sgs3 all you have to do is get practiced to it.
i have it on my galaxy s2 with ICS, both on samsung roms and AOSP roms. gingerbread was much better scrolling.
i really was hoping it was fixed in the s3, but now it seems it isnt
EDIT:
i am thinking all that nature feeling bs is just to cover it up?
Is that really what your complaining about? lmao

Have you tried a touch screen test app? If you move slowly, how long before the screen reacts? On the SII It's quite a long distance, so playing drawing games and such is impossible.

I'm facing the same problem with home screen lags as well. After considering, I switch back to EX go launcher with ICS themes; and everything works perfectly as it should - No home button lags, scrollable screen with Original SIII lock screen.

Yeah I know that, I actually bought it for the SII. Paid 5$. The reason I'm wondering is because my girlfriend wants one, and she won't root it.

I've noticed on custom ROMs s-pen is useless far to sensitive maybe this will help. Going to test when i get home and report back. I prefer the tweaking method with screw driver.
Didn't notice any difference.
Really wish there was a way to calibrate the pen more than anything. I'm left handed and the cursor and accuracy of the tip is off making selections very hard. My tablet PC that uses a Wacom digitizer can be calibrated...don't understand why the Note can't have the same thing.
I use blackstar and novena and they both have a setting for lefties. Basically switches the point to the right side.

[Q] S-pen loose in slot?

Hey guys, so I picked up a galaxy note 2 the other day and it's been great but after a few days I noticed the the vibrate had gotten louder and different sounding and I figured out that it is caused by the s-pen rattling when the phone vibrates because it feels slightly loose in the slot because i can kind of move it back and forth when it is in there and I was wondering if anyone else was having the same problem? or if not I might go swap devices at the store if I'm the only one with the issue. Thanks
Mine is pretty tight, take it back and get another one.

thats what she said.
Yeah mine is nice and snug in there. I'd have them swap it out for another phone.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
I mean it doesnt like jiggle around if I shake the phone, I can just slightly move the end when its inserted in the slot. But I guess it is loose enough in there or something so that I can hear it when the phone vibrates, I think I'll head to the verizon store today then

I had this same issue on my other phone. I swapped it out due to speaker issues, and my second phone doesn't have the same issue. On my previous phone, my friend tried to jam the S-Pen back in the slot without putting it in the proper direction. Anyways, I used the S-Pen a lot initially and now barely use it. I'm wondering if those who say they have a snug s-pen fit, utilize the s-pen a lot?
Anyways, i'd take it back if you can. If it was with assurion/replacement, i'd just say deal with it because most likely it'll happen again if you use the s-pen a lot.
Im still within the first 14 days of having it so I believe I can exchange it for a new one

I'd do it then.
Usually I never buy with insurance, but with all the issues that the Note2 has I bought it this go around.
But I still think this issue will pop up again with constant S-Pen use.
Thats what I was thinking.. because it didn't start happening until after a few days of having it, in which I played around with the s pen a good amount.. but if other people dont have the issue I would rather not have it either because I text a lot and when it rattles on 60% of them it gets a bit annoying

Like I said, the people above didn't comment on their usage though of the S-pen... I barely use it now, and it is in there pretty snug. When I first got the phone before the swap, I used the pen for everything.
So I have had the issue, but on the new phone not yet. May as well do the exchange... though if you can.
Im not even sure anymore.. I used a buddies phone today and sent myself 10 texts and it didnt do it on any of them but then I had anothee friend send me 10 and it did it on 5/10 of them

Hmm maybe, but I don't know what hardware it would use that we don't already have. It's just the front facing camera and gyroscope/accelerometer I believe. It sees you're looking at the screen then you tilt for it to scroll. So maybe it could be possible, but assuming the actual code for that was created by Samsung, it's probably close-sourced.
In that case, OP, don't you think something like this would've already existed before the GS4 if it could've been done? It's not really a revolutionary idea, but the coding itself may be pretty complicated. My guess is that if programming U.I. behavior based on the coordination of multiple sensors was within the capabilities of developers before Samsung threw money at it, then it would've been an app on the play store already.
Of course, I have no idea if that's the case regarding our XDA developers or Samsung's, I'm just guessing.
Its not the gyro it's a second Gen digitizer thst has some hardware build in can't recall the name momentarily but there is a Swype app that you can wave your hand up and down and it will scroll that uses the gyro

Hovering controls. I've been following it since he released it. It's come a long way, works pretty well now. It's one of those things that you don't always want to use, but it's handy when you do.
