Hi folks, first like to say thank you to everyone who puts this stuff together- mindboggling for me so it is.
ANyway, im not a techie, but im getting there.
I've rooted my S2, and i now have CWM and superuser on the phone. I have read ALOT of threads , and i'm a bit confused about my next steps. I have no sd card.
I want to get one of those ROMS to help the battery and all the other jazz(phone call recording sounds particularly sweet), but im wary of jumping into it... I have android 2.33 on the phone, and it was the kf3 kernal that i flashed on with ODIN to ROOT the phone successfully;
Q1. I was thinking of the lightning ROM for my phone- do i need to check which kernel and android version i have and match them up with a specific version of whichever ROM i go for?
Q2. Do i have to 'wipe' the phone before installing the ROM? ( i dont know what this means)
Q3. with the above in mind, can anyone point me towards a detailed tutorial on putting a ROM on the phone? ( i have looked honestly, im not being lazy- they dont seem to say what to do if youve already rooted the phone)
EDIT Q4- Should i have NOT rooted with KF3 V 4.0 and just installed the litening ROM, which would have rooted the phone aswell? - I'm really confused. Basically i can't figure out if ive made it harder to put a ROM on there, or easier.
EDIT Q5; will this method work ( im still not sure how to identify what rom fits my system)
How to install a ROM using CWM
Installing a ROM using CWM is a lot less hassle then installing via Odin. The ROM developer will specify which method of installing their ROM you can use, but it is usually done by a CWM flashable .zip.
To flash:
1. Boot into CWM as described above
2. Navigate to 'install zip from sd card'
3. Select it, and then navigate to 'install zip from sdcard' again!
4. Select the ROM you downloaded from your sd card
5. Navigate down to yes
6. Let CWM install you new ROM!

A1 No, lighting Rom includes its own kernal and will update your phnes android version when you install it.
A2 you should to make sure their are no stray bits of data floating around. Go to cwm and put it into recovery mode. clean the cache, the go into into advanced and clean daavik cache.
this is what is mean by wiping the phone. if you want you can also do a factory reset.
A3 the method in in question 5 is the usual way to do it from cwm but make sure that you copy it into the internal sdcard.
A4. rooting makes it easier in as it gives you access to the file structure of the phone. It is always a good idea to root the phone, if you want to customize it.
A5. To use cwm mwthod any rom has to come it a zip file version. Tar file versions are used with odin but in any case always follow the developers instructions to get the best out of the rom.

thak you so much for coming back to me, i really appreciate it.
So if i can just clarify my proposed method then from the above with a few more questions;
1 go to cwm recovery and clean the two caches you mentioned above while in recovery mode. ( i see the menu now in recovery mode- would i be right in saying the ones to select are 'wipe cache partition' and i can see the dalvik one in advanced no problem)
2 I need to get the rom zip file from the developers thread. SO i download that to my laptop- then whats the best way to transfer to the phone internal sd card as you said...Do i Need an external sd card yes? (sorry, i know this sounds dumb )
3 ( please ignore this one if youre busy- no big deal as i can do more research) can you recommend a good ROM thats not majorly complicated, saves the battery, looks cool i suppose and has some good extra fucntions? as i was saying i liked the lite'ning one but ive read some places that its a bit of a battery drain...

1. correct, wipe those 2 to prepare your phone.
2. no, you do not need an external card. Go to the laptop root directory, you will see the internal sdcard of your phone as a drive, create a new folder in the phone sdcard and copy the zip file to it.
then detach cable and go into recovery and flash the zip file.
3. you will need to experiment with different roms. Lite'ing is fine all custom roms are a bit of battery drain because of the extra functions. But the battery life is still better then the stock as they have tweaked the battery to discharge slower for longer battery life.
4. Everyone has different preferences. try different combinations of firmware, kernal and modem till you find one that you will like.

So without root how can I change them back? or get root with out changing them? I tried cf root and don't know how to download a firmware from chainfire(which I just got was why it was CF... CF=ChainFire) because when i extract, i only get zImage. Any help is fine

Don't worry, that's the limitation/bug in the CWM recovery version used for that rooting guide.
Once you know that, then you will not have problem to root your phone.
Once your phone is rooted with that method, flash either Siyah or Speedmod kernel.
Visit the thread of those kernels in the original development section, download .zip version and not .tar
CWM recovery only recognises zip files.
Those kernels, have fixed version of CWM recovery and will drain keeps battery than stock kernel

I actually ended up getting through and immediatly after flashing busybox, I just installed Siyah and I am all good. Ext and int sd card now are even in the right places and I am preparing to install para if my cwm is working correctly.
Hi, i'm new at the forums, but this have been my first option for android related solutions and info for a long time ago, but i finally decided to join it.
Well, this is embarrasing, but my first post it's about a problem in my pretty new SGS3 GT-i9300 i got a couple of weeks ago.
The problem is..., well, i've been testing some roms as 2nd roms with the help of the Siyah kernel. I've done the basics things..., root my phone, install my first kernel (siyah...), killed the stock rom so i learned how to flash a new stock rom for my country without all the operator's junk, then i overclocked (just a bit only), then i started with the 2nd roms....
My first try was UltimaROM, pretty good but i wanted to test MIUI, no problem, i worked but i didn't like it completely since it deleted all the samsung goodies, so i tried to flash ihackers, no luck..., it wouldn't just boot. So i tried with FoxHound, the same thing. So just dissapointed, i came back to UltimaROM and installed it again as 2nd rom (all in just 2 days). Well, it worked ok but then i noticed a serious problem...
Since the last time, when i flashed UltimaROM with the 2nd Rom Utils from Siyah, i came back to the stock rom (1st rom) because i wanted to record the fireworks outside my home (because of new year ), but, the camera said "Error al grabar" and just closed..., then i remember a couple of random massages saying that i was running out of space in the internal memory, so i dicided to temporarily delete the 2nd rom (i've been so gross these two days...), and..., according to the 2nd rom utils from siyah, the 2nd rom was succesfely removed, but just to be sure, i fixed permissions (i did this everytime i tried to flash a new 2nd rom).
Now back to the stock rom, the camera problem not being able to record to the internal memory still there, but now, i looked into the internal memory with root explorer and there is a big folder named "ADM" with a...¡¿copy?! of the UltimaROM zip, which weights 1.5Gb, and i can't delete it, EVEN WORSE!, now a lot of random files and folders in the internal memory are "locked", i can't delete any of these, or even change permissions (my DCIM folder for example). I then tried the CWM option to "fix permissions", on the main CWM recovery as well as in the siyah 2nd rom utils recovery..., but all the same
Thinking that the internal memory file system got corrupted, i though that my best option was to flash the stock rom from samsung again, but this time with the option "Re-partition" checked. I tried it in Odin but...damn it..., it won't make it!, however, i can soft-flash the stock rom without "re-partition" check..., but this doesn't fix the internal memory...
In short, i CAN boot into my main stock rom, i can FLASH the stock rom trough Odin but i can't if i check the Re-partition option, and until i get i fix for the internal memory, i'll have to use my 2Gb External SD Card.....
So..., what can i do? Is there anything i can do to safely format the internal emmc completely and then flash the stock rom again? Or maybe do i have to...assume...that the locked internal memory problem...is a hardware problem? That's what i'm afraid of...
Anyway, i'll leave the details here.
OS: Stock Rom Samsung JB 4.1.2 (I9300UBEMH2_I9300UVOEMH1_ARO)
Kernel: Siyah Kernel 1.9.1
Recovery: CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4 CF-v1.5
I would leave a dump file of the failing Odin process now, but i don't know if that is possible and neither how to do it. But he most i can give is a screenshot attached.

Use es file explorer and click on root manager. And click mount r/w. Make sure both is rw.

Thanks JellyYogurt, Yeah, i tried it as one of my first options, even with root permissions
Now, i'm really REALLY consufed...maybe, can Android get stuck for periods and lock access to some files? because after a while, i came back to take a screenshot in windows showing me a "Read-Only" mode error when trying to delete those damn files, at least, that's what said to me before, because now i connected in MTP as usual and the things i tried to delete with error earlier are...gone? I don't get it yet, and i'm hope it won't happen again, maybe tomorrow i'll try reflashing again
If the problem happens to vanish, i'll let you know so u can delete this post, just give a couple of days, i want to make sure i can make a full reflash with repartitioning in case of future emergencies

Well, it looks like the MTP lied to me, i checked inside /sdcard/ again and the locked files still there and locked :/, i tried again mounting as R/W with no luck. When i try to take a screenshot with power + home, it says that the usb storage could be ON...this is weird, i double check my usb mass storage app and swtich to usb mass storage mode and then back to mtp (i know it's only for the extSdCard...but i don't know what else can i do)
Any ideas plz? Thanks again

Have u tried a factory reset? Copy paste all ur pics and data to the computer first as u seem to be able to do so.
Well, i tried and tried and let me say this an awful way to begin the year :crying:
I tried using doing the factory reset from within CWM and apparently all was succesful, but again in android, the internal /sdcard/ still the same, it didn't delete anything that my settings!
Now i can't avoid being a bit desperate, is there any way to format the internal /sdcard/ (or /sdcard0/, whatever) so i can start from scratch again? In fact i don't have anything useful in there, 'cause i made a full backup 4 days ago before this problem even appeared. Now i would just be fine if i could format the internal /sdcard/, just that..., i tried the "format /sdcard" option from within CWM...but it formatted the external sdcard, what a mess

Use philz recovery instead, format internal sd card, wipe for new rom.

You are just a master! I tried flashing a Philz recovery via Odin and, like you told me, i formatted the internal /sdcard/, then without exitting the recovery, i check inside the sdcard with the "install zip" option, and it says "No files found", i would never have imagined how beautiful would those words look .
Now, just to make sure, i would like to repartition with odin, and (at least for now) come back to my stock rom, but the problem i mentioned earlier about "can't open file" when i tried to repartition, was because i missed the .pit file hehe
So i searched for the .pit file for the S3 16GB edition and i found it, in the corresponding forum, they said that the .pit file ending in 329 worked good for all of them.
Now with all in hand, i powered on in Download mode, opened Odin v3 once more, selected Re-partition, choosed the .pit file (ending in 329) and the stock rom .md5, flashed, waited 10min and..., no errors, until i saw the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" problem, so i flashed again the Philz Touch recovery over the stock one (because when i tried to access the stock recovery the error always appeared), so fine! I booted into Philz and wiped cache, data and...it's so beautiful...:crying:, Android finally started! As if it were just when i bought the S3
So, i fixed it finally! I think the only thing that remains is to reset the counter with TriangleAway and get back my last backup
Thank you so much friend! At the end, i'll stay with Philz Recovery, i didn't know it before but is far better than CWM. Thanks again!

1st post here at xda. I have a s3 running 4.12 , stock rom vodafone in ireland.
I installed CWM and rooted phone. Then done a backup with CWM.
I tried to install R5 stock rom from internal sd card, i selected the zip file and the installation started but had an error
i coulnd;t see.
At this stage i panicked a bit. I tried again but wiped internal sdcard in CWM before i started.
Now the phone wont boot to any OS (since tried to install 2 other custom roms from xda, both times screnn went blank after choosing installation options)
Cant recover backup as its no longer on internal sd card.
I can access CWM. Should I start by installing stock rom from samsung site ?
Am I doing the custom rom installation correct by using CWM to install from zip file in sd card ?
I tried to install roms with odin but its looking for tar file ?

You are heading for a hard brick by not understanding what you are doing.
Go and read all the sticky threads in general forum, then carefully follow the guide on how to return to stock.
Once you have your phone working again then install the latest recovery version (I'd suggest philz), backup your efs, then try again.
Read and understand before you hit go.

thanks. Read the general forum, was helpful. Its a great site, but in fairness there is so much information and some of it is conflicting to me, (maby i'm losing it!)
got the phone booting up again so happy days. will take my time and do backup before trying any custom roms.

Do your research before attempting things like this. I'm relatively new in flashing, before I began the first time I made sure I followed and understood every steps before proceeding, go check youtube for tutorial videos if you are really not sure, sometimes it pays being paranoid

Hi there,
you've got to understand that your first post sounded like yo did not do your research at all, which generally tons of people don't do whining about
their bricked devices afterwards in the forums. If you don't understand what you do - don't do it.
Your original mistake was probably not properly wiping and/or formatting certain partitions (e.g. one forgotten wipe of system or data partition often puts your phone into BL, all depending on what version you come from & go to etc.) before flashing the zip from CWM (which is the way you usually flash custom ROMS, you're right).
Every ROM provides installation instructions which are to be follwed exactly. Never use a file not made for your specific device. Don't do anything before you know how to revert in case of disaster. Don't do anything before you got a full Nandroid & EFS backup both transferred to your PC. And again, understand what you do.

Installed philz recovery and done backup to ext sdcard (errored out was <1 G free space on card)
Done backup to internal sdcard - had about 7GB free
Copied recovery folder back to PC.
Installed Revolution ROM and afterwards noticed internal memory only 1GB
Am now copying the blob folder to PC.
Is this the case with all of the recoveries to use so much space doing a backup ?
Where do I read up on the 0 folder here, i've searched but there is so much info its a bit confusing.

Installed Revolution ROM and afterwards noticed internal memory only 1GB
Am now copying the blob folder to PC.
Is this the case with all of the recoveries to use so much space doing a backup ?
Where do I read up on the 0 folder here, i've searched but there is so much info its a bit confusing.

I know the subject has been covered already, just looking for a thread where i can read in simply form about what to do.
I copied blob file to pc , freed up another 4 gb, OS and backups still taking up 12/16GB of internal storage without any user app or data , just not right.
