[Q] Going from stock to custom ROM - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there first thread for me
I was just wondering, I am on stock Samsung ROM but am thinking of installing either Foxhound or Paranoid Android (possibly CM10 when stable supported version is out)
do I need to do a full wipe or can I just wipe cache partition, dalvik cache and fix permissions?
Also out of Foxhound and Paranoid, which would you guys recommend and why? or would you recommend I wait for CM10?
Thanks for all the help guys, this is a great community!

To each his own. Try both and decide yourself. Always recommended to do a full wipe.

thanks very much for your help, I might just try both as you said and then I can make a decision from there
What actually happens if I didnt do a full wipe and just wiped the caches and fixed the permissions?

Full wipe is recommended but always not necessary. Try installing the Rom without a wipe and if you didn't get any fc then leave it as it is, else wipe it. Also fix permission is not required every time.

If you lucky (occasionally), nothing happens.
If you unlucky (most probably) , unpredictable bugs will annoy you to death

[Q] Update to a new version of a ROM, should I wipe?

I am currently running KaosFroyo v30 and just recently downloaded v31. Should I wipe my phone before installing the latest version of this ROM?
*Note: it does call for a wipe when installing v17 it reads " **THIS IS A WIPE INSTALL** " does that apply to all ROMs post v17?
Edit: I know I should be asking Kaos himself, but I thought I would ask the community first.
If he doesn't say to wipe in between you don't have to... I personally always wipe the dalvik cache before and after I install a new update even if it's not required.
Well, I did what you advised and everything seems to be working out well. Of course I only just recently updated, so tomorrow and Friday will be test days. One thing i have noticed though us that MMS is till not working....
Like Hungry Man said, you don't HAVE to wipe unless the dev says so, but things always seem to be a lot cleaner when you do wipe.
I always recommend wiping.

I always wipe disk and Dalvik.
Only takes a second.
And with Titanium and what not, you don't even have to do anything.
They're making things too easy for us, lol.
You could flash with out wipe then if you have issues beyond known bugs, wipe and reflash.

If you dont have many programs or apps installed then do a wipe but for me it is a pain in the ass setting it all back up again. So, if it is just an update, then I dont wipe. Sometiimes it leaves scratchy ass, sometimes not
I have always wiped updating to a new ROM, mainly because I didn't know any better. The next update I might update after V31 I might just try a flash and see what happens because I'm impatient when reloading everything LOL.
If it is a new completely different ROM then yes I would wipe.
Installing a new ROM, updating or new, is like talking a shyt. You should probably wipe.

+1 internets. I LOL'd.
most importantly like mom alwayz said , wipe good
Wiping will get rid of all the clingy bits, which isn't always necessary, but I recommend it.

I'll take that +1 internets sir. Thanks.
I ended up not wiping (no pun intended) no problems so far. I like some of the little tweaks, but I don't think the track ball lighting is not working

Running seraphim and keep getting wifi errors

Hello,
First and foremost, I'm loving this rom. I'm a noob and getting my hands dirty figuring all this out.
Now with that said:
When I try to connect to my wifi network it keeps saying authentication error occurred. I have tried everything and the only thing that fixes it is restoring my backup to my stock rom.
Please help!!!!

I will say 90% of the people in here will say it is not the rom. just because theres seems to work. and i tend to agree. what have you tried to fix it? besides going back (to Stock). i have not had any issues with WiFi on Serephim yet, so i can not say what a fix would be. maybe wipe your cache's. when i had that issue on GB i had to reinstall the kernel and boom it worked. but seeing as though we do not have one yet for ICS. i would say wipe and worst case reinstall the from after a very Thurough Wiping Process.

Then if your into flashing right now, just try either the superwipe.
Or this is how i wipe.
I factory default/format usb from inside the rom.
I wipe factory/data from cwm
i wipe cache partition from cwm
i wipe delvik from cwm
then i flash "Rom" and reboot.
this leaves nothing from previous roms and or Gingerbreak roms.
try that and see if it works. if not then i am out of ideas until a kernel source is released.
Ok i will try that and see if it works...
Thank you!!!

I fixed it.... USER ERROR.. I Don't want to admit this but I was entering the wrong password and my old Rom had the password saved so I never had to enter it...

[Q] Anyone have any tips about this?

Now my head i about to explode
Anyhow, I have an annoying problem.
Before the upgrade to XXALF6 I noticed no problem other than the known drainage of the battery in idle mode.
I rooted and flashed a ROM and it was ok.
But I got sick of the ROM and I hard reset the phone.
No problems.
Then I upgraded to XXALF6 - still unrooted and all.
First thing I notice is that the phone is lagging a bit now and then. Then when I sent and recieved an SMS or two the phone hung and rebooted.
I seems that happend because when vibration was active.
Also there was a new message saying "com.google.process.gapps" stopped working. And that came up again and again.
As far as I could find online that had to do with syncing the calendar and it should help to clear calendar cache in the phone. It did not.
Then I rooted the phone, just "CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4", no other ROM.
Now the problem was even worse and also the sound stops working on and off all the time.
I tried to find the "com.google.process.gapps" with a file explorer with no luck.
I do find it in ROM Toolbox but its not possible to see the where on the phone the file is even there. Also its not possible to uninstall or even kill the process.
I did notice there seem to be doubles of some apps that I didnt notice previously to flashing CF-Root this time.
And I recall the new guide never mentions to wipe any phone data whatsoever during rooting the phone, and now I am thinking that maybe that should have been in the guide?
Anyhow.. appreciate ANY tips at all, Im so sick of this for the moment ^^
Go to cwm recovery, wipe cash, wipe dalvik cash, wipe data/factory reset, then go to mounts&storage, format system. Then put your phone into the download mode and flash ROM again with odin. This should give you a nice and clean install, without any force closes..

I did wipe all things, cache, Dalvik, battery and user data with CWM.
At the moment it seems the phone is quite okay actually! The only thing left is SU.
U think I have to format system as well? What else would really be "cleaned" out that wasn't allready with the wipes?
Trust me,some of the devs insisted on formating system before flashing their custom roms, and I did have a bunch of force closes, until I decided to go their way and fully format the phone. It then installs everything from the scratch,so there's no way anything to go wrong.. give it a try,and report back... btw. make sure that you DO NOT restore any of the system data,if you use TB
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I pretty much learnt same way as predja it is always better to do full system wipe, it is not always necessary with some roms but if you do it you won't come across the problems you have as often.

Battery drain issues

To anyone getting battery drain issues with custom ROM like had. Would like to share a method that helped me get my battery stable. First wipe cache partition followed by wipe dalvic, then factory reset. Now go to mounts and storage and select system format after this step flash ROM and Gapps as usual. After this I wipe cache partition and dalvic one more time and reboot. I knw it seem like a lot to do but it has work for me I now get 10+ hrs of battery life. Just remember to use titanium backup or Go Backup app otherwise be ready to reinstall apps and layout settings all over again. Hope this help and if any questions Pm me an I will do what I can to help.

Yes I agree with you but sometimes during install battery goes hay wire and installing this way it seems to fix it. A few others and I have had this issue and this had fixed it. Issue with a few AOKP RELEASE. Thought I put it out there for those who have had this issue and don't format before install

but they have been told time and time again, if you dont fully wipe before flashing, then dont report anything....its simple.
you posted instructions on flashing a rom, the same as any ROM OP should.
BTW, wiping cache and dalvik is placebo. when you boot after changing system, the dalvik cache gets rebuilt....doesnt matter if you wipe it or not. what can matter is /data partition if you have rogue app or rogue settings that are incompatible with the version of the rom you are upgrading to.
this thread is just a common sense thread:
if you have problems fully wipe then flash again.....
even says so in the AOKP OP......
Totally agree but still you and I know that reading through AOKP page the question comes up and at least with this they will avoid asking the question on thread page. Please PM for further comments.

Thats really odd... are you sure you are doing a full wipe when you install those ROMs? Flashing a fresh ROM should just about clear anything left on the phone I dont understand how a fresh ROM could be laggy.
Possibly hardware issues?
Yes im sure i do male a full wipe, even system, really wear,
Sent from my LG-P999
Are you also wiping data. So when your phone boots .... You are having to re enter your information? Also what rom are you currently flashing?

Do you have, or can you install an app like "system tuner" that can tell you how your phone is performing? Like are both cpu's running and so forth?
