Help with Wifi location services, and email setup - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there!
I'm a newbie to this android, flashing Rom's world and I just recently flashed a great JB Rom but I've just encountered two small issues, and I was hoping that you guys could give me a hand solving them. The problem is that when I stabilsh a WIFI connection, the google maps/location services in my device dont work properly, the pin drops in a place that is not accurate at all, it actually places me in a different country (google maps), same happens w/ the weather shown in google now, and Facebook. But this does not happens when I'm on mobile services.
Last but not least is whem I'm trying to set up one particular Email account (@me.com) I get an error message saying "Unable to connect to email sever to verify your account information. No response from server" and I made sure that my password was correct. Which doesn't happen with other Roms.
I've been reading for quite some time now and I found no answer to this particular situation or any similar, so sorry in advance if it already has been posted or asked, but honestly I couldnt find it.
thanks in advance for any type of help.

[Q] Unable to sign in to Google/Market

Greetings to all!
I apologize in advance if I am posting to the wrong place, but
searching did not help. Also, an android noob, so please be gentle
I am the happy owner of a SGS2 since Monday. No problems so far, except
the fact that I am unable to sign in/sync etc. with Google in order to use the
Market. I am using my gmail account (valid and in daily use for years). There
are no connectivity problems (wifi and 3G work OK, I have full access to
gmail and other internet sites). At the same moment that I am logged in to gmail
(through the browser), the market app (or the sync function) report that they
cannot communicate with the google servers!
Any thoughts/suggestions? Am I doing something wrong (or missing something)?
Thanks!!!
PS. Not rooted (yet), running on
Android v. 2.3.3
Baseband I9100XXKE7
Kernel 2.6.35.7.-I900XWKF3-CL276555 root DELL101 #2
Build: Gingerbread.XWKF3
if that helps......
Symptoms look similar to what I had -- couldn't setup a gmail/market account with "connection issue" errors. I had tried wifi & over 3g with no avail, till I found the following setting:
Try enabling the following setting:
Settings >> Accounts and sync >> Background data (ensure this is ticked).
Not saying it will solve your problem, but it did work for me.
Let me know how you get on.
Hmmmm disabling the background data was the first thing I did (I have no intention
of paying the outrageous rates of the greek carriers - I will be using the phone only
through wifi for internet). Perhaps this may solve the problem, I will update as soon as
I try it. Thanks!
Bingo! Enabled Background data and signed in with my gmail account in seconds!
Thank you very much!

[Q] Comcast.net email (Can't safely connect to Comcast servers)

Greetings from the Skyrocket forum. I'm looking for a little help for a friend who has a problem receiving her Comcast.net email on her phone through the native app. When she puts in her mail info, she gets this response "Can't safely connect to Comcast servers."
I have searched this forum by a variety of search terms including "email", "comcast email", "comcast", etc. I'm coming up empty handed. A google search seems to show that there's been quite a bit of questions asked about this but as for the specific answer, if there is one, I can't find it.
Has anyone with Comcast.net email and an S3 found that they cannot include that account, or is there or has a workaround been found, preferably aside from using another email client.
Thanks for your time and hopefully, answers!

Email App not connecting

Guys,
For the past four days I have had a total failure of the standard Email app in that it now will not connect to my Yahoo email account, simply saying "wrong username or password, please edit settings".
I know it's a server issue as not only is this happening on my S3 but also on all my other Android devices (Galaxy Note, ASUS Transformer Prime & Nexus 7).
I have contacted yahoo TWICE and each time they tell me to alter the password which I repeatedly tell them that does not work and it is a server issue. Annoyingly they do not follow up the replies they receive and you have to generate a new query each time.
As such I am trying to build up a bigger pattern to hit them with and would welcome if anyone else has experienced this issue.
Thanks

[Q] What "Exchange Services" is actually for?

(rooted i9500, Android 4.2.2)
I've just spent an hour or two browsing the web looking for some factual information on what this service is actually for. I found lots of threads for it, people speaking about draining battery because of it, I found a lot of threads that had discussion on "exchange emails" and some microsoft services, but also about imap's and pop's, but not single thread that actuall says what this service is for, which could give me information if I could disable it.
Till now I thought this is a very important background service from google, that has crucial role in all sync operations (callendar, contacts, email including gmail) etc, and if I disable it, all this syncing will stop. But I'm starting to think differently, as I just disabled this service and did a little check by sending myself an email, and the galaxy received it instantly.
So, can someone knoledgable tell me exactly what this service is about?
Yes it is, it's for Microsoft exchange mail. You should use the GMail app it's way better anyways
@Up
Thanks a lot AJM-hackers for taking the time.
So to make sure, this service is strictly used, when someone is using the "Microsoft exchange mail". It is used for nothing else?
I do use only gmail, since my first android phone. So it is completely safe to disable this service in these circumstances (I don't use Microsofts exchange mail and won't)?
Sorry to look a bit paranoid here, but could somebody confirm the above? I just don't want to break something, and then spend a full day looking for the cause, which would turn out to be the disabling of "Exchange Services".
No problems in 2 days whatsoever.
I guess that settles it for me. Thanks for the help AJM-hackers.

[Q] How to stop Android data usage leaks?

Hi!
I have a rooted Xperia M dual (C2005) with factory firmare (4.2.2). Installed Afwall+ and blocked all network activity except Firefox and K9mail.
But there is still network usage (Android OS).
There is a blog post about this, but I can't link it. Google on "How to debug/examine data usage leaks in Android using iptables"
Does somebody have an idea how can I block these types of data transfer?
Thank you,
Tim

Last time this kind of issue popped up from a few days ago, it was because of tethering. Do you tether? And sometimes the Android OS reads traffic from other apps and is included there. Like for instance, you use K-9. If you use it to access your Google account for mail, that could explain the data traffic there. I'm not an expert in these matters though, so might be a better answer out there.

Hi, es0tericcha0s!
Thank you for the answer. No teething, no Google mail, absolutely no Google account registered on the phone.
Why could a @gmail e-mail account in a 3rd parity e-mail client make traffic on the OS level?
Cheers,
Tim

Weird. Can't even imagine not having a Google account on my devices. lol But most of the IP addresses were Google's so, was assuming that the OS would detect that and thought it might be linked to a Google account and you mentioned having 2 apps and one of them was an email. Stretching a bit for the answer. lol But android is funny and doesn't necessarily work the same across different updates, carriers, and manufacturers, so this kind of stuff can be tricky.
probably google giving the NSA access to your phone
