Problems getting back to stock - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I have a rooted and S-on Evo. The RUU keeps failing, even after I unrooted via the Superuser app.
Keep getting “ERROR [155]: UNKNOWN ERROR” and then it says it can not update the phone.
And then “Please get the correct ROM update utility and try again.”
I am definitely using the correct RUU version. 1.22.651.3.
Also I have tried two different computers and two different USB cables.
Does anyone know how to get this thing working?

if you updated to the latest OTA update; that usually updates your radios and your Hboot which means the old RUU won't work because it has an OLDER HBoot and radios. Your gonna have to wait till the new OTA becomes available as an RUU to be able to go back to stock.
if you didn't take the OTA 2.13 and you are still on 1.22 then try putting your phone on Fastboot and try it that way.
Edit: Ok so it looks like the latest RUU has been uploaded. Look here http://www.filefactory.com/f/b6eb73c80cc97030/

Thanks, I will try fastboot.
However, as I said in the OP, I am on the same version (1.22.651.3) as the RUU I am using...

I ran into the same error 155 issue.
I found the solution and it's quite simple. In the instructions to unroot, they forget to mention that you MUST relock your bootloader (instructions below). Once you relock it, then you can run the RUU for 1.22.651.3.....after that, take the stock OTA update.
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-re-lock-htc-one-x-bootloader/

It helps to have HTC Sync installed too

Is there another site with the new ruu?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

running "fastboot oem lock" yields "waiting for device," and this stays on the screen forever. It doesn't work...

OK, finally got it to lock. Now, trying to see if I can get that RUU to work...it seems to be working. I think the issue was that I was not properly in fastboot mode.
So my plan is this:
RUU
OTA (to get the latest kernel and such)
Root/Unlock
MeanROM

Correct - this is an important step too. HTC Sync must be fully installed, drivers and all.

That's my plan, except I'm keeping the stock ROM. If you find a way to Root, let me know - I tried RegawMOD, but I could not get it to work

I would highly suggest NOT taking the OTA...
The reason they now have a new h-boot is because there was a vulnerability in the old one.
Simply flash a new ROM based on the lastest OTA.

That's not always true, and almost all new major releases come with a new hboot. In fact I can't remember any updates on my 0g evo, evo 3d, and evo LTE, that didn't come with a new hboot. The fact of the matter is, people that are s-on and hboot 1.15 won't be able to upgrade their radios and firmware unless they take the ota or run the ruu. This update makes the phone fly and is worth it.
On the other post, regaw mod does work with unlocking and installing twrp, you will have to install a rooted rom afterwards though because regaw mod fails at the rooting step.

Sweet this is actually the point where I'm at. HTC Dev unlocked, s-on, hboot 1.15 and rocking twrp. I've been trying to parse through all of the numerous posts on a method to go ahead and install the ota updates. I actually believe I'm 2 down as I haven't updated ever and I got the phone @ launch. I recall reading somewhere that just going back to the stock recovery is a viable option if I want to go w/ the ota updates. I don't really have any interest in different ROMs (I scratch that itch w/ my evo 3d).
tl;dr Whats the least painful way to install the OTA updates post HTC Dev unlock, s-on, twrp recovery, and hboot 1.15?

[Q] Rogers ICS Upgrade?

Hey All,
I am trying to install the OTA for ICS that was released by Rogers today for my EVO 3D.
I am rooted and unlocked but with the stock Rogers ROM and I also have S-OFF.
The problem I am running into is that I am able to download the upgrade but when I go into HBoot and try to apply it I get a signature verification failed.
Originally I thought it might have been a bad download so I downloaded it a 2nd time, same result.
So I thought, what the hell, I will turn off the signature check and try it again. This time I get an error that the 'assert failed: check_cid(getprop("ro.cid").' and the installation aborted.
Does anyone have any insight into why this would fail? I am hoping to apply this but not sure why its a no go.
Thanks for the help in advance.
Cheers, Crash
Have you ever changed your cid? run "fastboot getvar cid" and post what it says. If your cid is original for rogers, the ota may not be working because you are s-off.
Hey @patrick92260
I have not checked my CID, not really sure how actually.
In order for me to run that command I would have to be hooked up to ADB I assume? If so thats going to need to wait until I get home tonight to try that and give you the results, unless there is another way I can run that command?
Thx for the reply
Yeah it's done through ADB. If you don't really know what the cid is, you probably haven't changed it. If you have the stock recovery, then the reason the ota isn't working has to be because you are s-off. you will probably have to wait for an RUU to upgrade to ICS.
Makes sense then. Would setting S-ON make it so I can apply it? Or would that not be worth the effort?
Honestly I can wait a bit longer, we have been waiting this long for it
Thx for the help.
But you should be able to get back to S-ON by flashing Gingerbread RUU, no?
If you originally used revolutionary to get s-off, then you have radio s-off which is the highest level of s-off you can have and i would not recommend trying to set it back to s-on. i also have a rogers evo 3d and i am using the asian RUU ICS and it works fine while letting me keep s-off after flashing it so i would recommend using that RUU if you want ICS.

If he has radio s-off you can flash any RUU you want and it will not turn it back to s-on. Radio s-off is basically permanent since it removes the data in the S58 section of the phone. The fake s-off is the one you need to be careful with which is usually done by using a hacked hboot.

Bull**** Bull**** Bull****.
For getting OTA you need NOT rooted and NOT deodexed Stock-rom+stock recovery.
Don't try to make S-ON, it is great chance to brick the phone.
And your CID you can get with cid getter from the market.
Patrik, stop it plz.
Is there any risk or advantage to used to Asia one? Not sure I want to have that one my phone over the NA ones.
Would there not be a RUU or this Rogers release? Maybe I should just say the hell with it and just ROM it?

It's a toss up if the RUU for rogers or the europe ICS ever shows up here. I am using the asian one and don't really notice any difference over the rogers or europe update. If you have radio s-off you can always downgrade by flashing a gingerbread RUU if you don't like the asian ICS RUU.
I had to run the Rogers gb ruu 1.20.631.2. It then update to 631.3 when I checked for updates. I then booted checked for updates again and it updated to ics. Now I'm running official Rogers ics but as I said I had to roll all the way back 1.20.631.2 and update all the way up from there.
And it does update the hboot but you can downgrade it with ruu previously mentioned.

Somewhere in the development thread there is a thread with shipped ruus already covered to pg86img.zip. Just find the Rogers one and put it on the root of your sd card and boot into bootloader. It will detect it and install 1.20.631.2 then just manually check for updates under about phone. The first update should be 1.20.631.3 which is 9.35mb then xcheck again and it's the ics update around 306 mb. Sorry I can't link to it you'll have to search the development forum. I've had it since it was posted way back when on my phone.
Make sure it's renamed PG86IMG.zip

Ive tried to do this, after downloading it and putting it in the root directory of my phone. Hboot sees the image, stalls there for a few seconds then continues. nothing has happened. Ive tried installing it from CWM, no difference. I think i may need a bit more help then this. After it was detected, i did go and see if it was downgraded in the ABOUT, but it sits at .3 still.
Any ideas?
Okay, so for those people out there that are looking to do this, here's the functional way it worked for me (no errors, nothing happened during the update)
Download the .exe file,
EXECUTE the exe file from windows while the phone is plugges in. This will revert back to .2
Put phone into a wireless network once back up and running.
Update the phone as neccessary.
After the update, i noticed my Hboot when to 1.53.007. Now we just need to wait for a root.
Also, when i went into Recovery from Hboot, i noticed that it didnt do anything, sat there with a pic of my 3D and it had a red exclamation point. should that happen?
no luck
hi i have tried every method here with no go. i have s-on and phone is rooted. can some one post a working rom or something for the love of android!
looks like it was the bootloader it needs to be relocked using rootevo3dnew.zip. which will allow you to downgrade using the ruu file in windows. followed by the 2 updates in about phone and i got the ICS yay! if you have trouble search youtube for the video on "relocking evo 3d bootloader" it was easy, good luck ppl.

Looking to go back to 100% stock

I have started searching and am having a hard time finding exactly what I need. Anyway, I haven't used my Rezound since I got my S3 so I am not really up to speed on where the Rezound is in terms of OTA updates and whatnot. Right now my Rezound is S-Off on a engineering hboot (I believe) and rooted, but it was stock otherwise (up until I stopped using it).
I would like to get it back to 100% stock (other than S-Off, I will leave that as is for now). What is the easiest way to get there? I am assuming flashing an RUU of the latest stock build? If so, what is the latest stock build that I would get if I re-activated the phone and updated it (meaning I don't want any leaks or anything).
Also, it has been so long since I did any flashing on the phone, but what is the easiest way to flash a RUU (since I have never done that). And can I just flash the latest RUU without flashing anything else first?
Thanks, and sorry for all of the noob questions.

Thanks! Yea, I just found it on android police. I am assuming it won't wipe the SD card or anything right? Since I am S-OFF I don't have to worry about re-locking correct?
Also, will that RUU get it back to the point where someone could get the OTA's and everything as if it was 100% stock with S-ON?

Yes , running the RUU will not effect s-off status nor your bootloader locked status.
not to hijack the thread....but I have a question that relates to getting back to stock. I am running business sense, with the OTA. I would like to get the other global OTA.. I am s on. How do I go about doing that?
flash stock recovery
relock
run which RUU? the newest one is a PH file on android police
unlock
flash amon ra
flash new rom
does that sound right?
the part that I am questioning is the fact the global RUU is a PH file. But it says I have to be completly back to stock and locked.
any help would be greatly appreciated

I did s-off procedure a few months ago. it took several hours and kept failing. I used a large insulated paperclip with the insulating material removed from each end for good electrical contact.
What I had been doing wrong was not keeping the wire nice and straight in the hole. when the wire is not straight, it will not make good electrical contact with whatever is directly beneath the hole.
I just thought I'd share this tip in case it helps others.
regards,
Howard
p.s. There is no need to install the jbear modified hboot if you are uncomfortably with it. Installing the modified hboot is optional at the end of the s-off procedure. You will still have benefits of s-off with a htcdev unlocked bootloader while using a stock unlocked hboot. For example one can flash kernels via fastboot flash command with a stock hboot. s-off and jbear modified hboot are two separate modifications to the phone.

actually, on a stock, locked HBoot, you CAN'T use any fastboot commands. That's why it's highly recommended to install the JBear HBoot, plus it gives you an easy option to do it and it does it without the user having to do anything

HELP! Rezound refuses to pull ICS update (or any update)

I recently re-locked my bootloader (never had s-off) and flashed the appropriate RUU to restore my device back to complete stock, however now it won't pull the ICS update and I'm having a hard time figuring out what issue is. Is there any chance that someone can help me get this working? When I check the status of the upgrade server it's completely blank except for the source: Verizon Wireless and code: 0 any idea?
Flash the GB RUU and it will update to ICS after the install. If you flashed the ICS leaks then you need to S off so that you can get back to GB. Getting S off is very easy. I would recommend it so you can flash all the new roms.

Includes most RUU's release for the Rezound, except the latest 4.3.605.2 version. Their server is a little slow, but it always seems to work.

So i think i figured out the shipped roms site. the Rezound is under vigor.
so which one do i flash theres 3 different roms.
how do i figure out which one i am on
1.00.605.3
1.02.605.6
2.01.605.11
also is there another link for the fastboot tool? so i can lock it again? Will these replace cwm on my device?
You have boot 2.11 so you need to get the 2.01 ruu. And yes it will return it too 100 percent stock including the recovery. You want to keep kt that way until after you update with the ota.

What happens when you check for a new update? Does it sit there for a couple seconds and then just disappear and not say anything? Or does it at least tell you that "there is no update available"? I had this same issue on the GB update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469246
basically what I had to do what activate my SIM on another rezound and then put it back into my original and it started pulling the updates.

Great. so the thread i found has the fast boot tool listed on it for relocking the boot loader (which from what i understand i have to do first) the link to download the tool is down. does anyone have an alternate download location for this tool?
I found the tool in another thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20780879&postcount=1
I was able to lock the device. Push the RUU 2.01 (like recommended) I then pulled down two OTA updates. One "prepared for ICS" the second installed ICS
thanks for your help.

How to flash radio with S-ON HBOOT 1.15

I successfully installed Fresh Evo LTE 5.3.1 on my phone.
One of the suggestions is to update the Radio but I'm having a tough time doing that.
Here are my specs:
HBOOT 1.15.0000
S-ON
FreshEVO 5.3.1 ROM
I went to the link from the FreshEVO LTE 5.3.1 page to update the radio and have tried the following to install the Radio:
Attempt 1
Downloaded the Full Firmware zip file
Rename it "PJ75IMG"
Place it in the root of my SD card
Reboot into Bootloader
The PJ75IMG.zip file is detect but I only get 'Parsing PJ75IMG.zip' and then the Fastboot, Recovery, etc. options are displayed.
Attempt 2
From the same page where I downloaded the Full Firmware zip file, I also tried:
Download the Boot.img Only (signed) file
Flash it through the command prompt while in Fastboot ("fastboot flash boot boot.img")
Go into Bootloader
The PJ75IMG.zip is detected but still get the "Parsing..." message and nothing else happens.
Attempt 3
I have also tried going into my TWRP recovery and installing the Full Firmware zip AND the Radio 1.12.11.0809 Only.zip file but the installation fails.
Any pointers or a link to a video or a post would be much appreciated.
Thanks and sorry if this is a duplicate post but I really couldn't find any post that showed step-by-step process.
revert to stock and accept the ota, you can then fastboot recovery again and reflash. hboot 1.15 can not directly flash any firmware
edit: you may have to relock your hboot but ive seen users state they didnt. if you decide to relock the phone you will have to unlock the bootloader again to enable fastboot

I don't have my stock backup anymore.
I've heard stuff about using RUU or something like that. Any quick guide on how to revert back to stock?
DO NOT UNROOT TO ACCEPT THE OTA OR RUU
I'd highly suggest just staying with your current radios and waiting for S-OFF before trying to update the radios. You can still flash the new ROMS in the meantime
You cannot update radios or firmware with Hboot 1.15 or 1.19------->Thats why it is suggested and not required

Thanks for the warning.
Since I'm pretty new to all this, I'll play it safe and stick to what I have.
sorry guys internet crapped out and i got stuck trying to post lol. rxpert has a point but with so much negativity about s-off never coming I'm starting to consider taking the OTA.
also you should always have a back up, its your go to solution when nothing else seems to be working since its a back up of when everything was new and working be it stock or custom
The new radios aren't worth losing the possibility, no matter how small

Just so I am clear, I too am 1.5 so if have my orginal rom, (the one after I unlocked my bootloader) i can restore it and accept the OTA without having to relock my phone? (it wont brick):good: Or do i have some other steps to take, I read the don't panic instructions, but it only mentioned what the OTA does ( relocks with a new rom) but nothing about what happens if I don't relock before I accept the OTA, I know i seem a bit slow, 4g lte isn't as interesting as OG 4g without S-off.

I havent yet done it myself but users have said they didnt need to relock, how ever as captain said there is no real need to update right now. If you decide to go ahead it would be a good idea to relock ( fastboot oem lock ) just to make sure, you can unlock afterwards. I neglect to mention this in my guide because most phones now are on 1.19 anyway and those still on 1.15 are holding out for soff
You will want to have the stock recovery to take the ota. Most people do this by relocking and running the ruu
Once again, I'm providing the info but I don't recommend it

I am still researching how to relock without issues. I have my orginal rom but still leary about the entire relocking process. I was hoping i could restore to orginal sense rom, then take the OTA. otherwise I am looking for the simplest way to accompish the relocking task, but frankly nothing is easy when i comes to playing around with 4g lte, except it is rather difficult to brick. With my luck i might succeed in that LMAO

ROMs vs stock updates and what gets updated...

I tried searching for this answer before I posted this but I was not successful at finding it. So.....
Is there anything that cannot be updated by the ROMs? Are there items that can only be updated by taking the latest OTA update? I am trying to figure out if I need to take this latest update to get the latest firmware, kernel, etc.
I am OK with waiting for the ROM updates to come out if they will update everything, too. If they can't, I might as well get these OTA updates to see if they fix some of my problems.
Thanks for the help.

Yes there are a lot of files that cant be updated with roms. The only way to get all of the new firmware is to run the ruu. Turge has figured out how to flash radios now without flashing the ruu so thats good. But thats not everything. I'd wait to run the ruu until the devs change their rom base to the new update. Otherwise no custom rom yet. You can root the stock update after installing, just not many goodies atm.
Thank you very much for your help.
When you say the only way to get the new firmware is to run the new RUU, does that mean running the RUU from at&t or one of the modified RUUs posted on here?
If it is the At&t one, the only way to get it to fully update is by going back to the stock 1.15 ROM, correct?
Yep I ran ruu and got it running stock but my 2nd x+ still running old one wit elegancia till roms get updated I don't mind unrooting updating and rooting takes 30 min tops just patiently waiting for a update hell if viper gets updated first ill rock that

The latest ruu for ATT to get the newest firmware is 1.19.502.1 http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_E...178_signed.exe

Correct, but I wasn't sure if you could update directly to that RUU from a custom ROM and get all the updates like hboot, firmware and radio. I was wondering if I needed to go from a custom ROM back to stock 1.15 and THEN do this 1.19 update to get everything updated properly.
If you update your phone to the latest RUU, you won't be able to installed a custom ROM until the devs update their ROM. You update, you stay stock for a moment. You still can ROOT the stock ROM.

Not exactly. You can upgrade with a RUU if your actual version is equal or lower. You can't downgrade your version unless your phone is S-OFF.
To flash the RUU
Reboot in fastboot mode
type at the prompt >fastboot oem lock
Rebooting
Keep your phone in FASTBOOT USB mode
Run the RUU installer on your computer.
This will FULLY WIPE the phone.

Doing this method, one could use the latest 1.19 directly from HTC and get everything updated? No need to do this method, install the older 1.15, and then do the 1.19 RUU update?

You can do one of two things to get the full update. One is to go back to a 1.15 stock ROM, flash the stock recovery and run the OTA. The other is to run the latest RUU from HTC (the one from the link posted above) after you've flashed the stock recovery and re-locked the bootloader (otherwise the RUU might not proceed). Bare in mind that running the RUU will wipe your phone to factory settings.
I started a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245955 about people's experiences updating and post-update. Once you decide to update feel free to share your experience there!
I have already updated. I went from elegancia. I locked the bootloader, rebooted to fastboot, and then ran the 1.15 stock RUU. After that, I ran the 1.19 update I downloaded from HTC. I was just trying to figure out if I would have went straight from elegancia to 1.19 if everything including radio, kernel, etc. would have updated properly since elegancia was on the phone and not stock version 1.15. I don't know what these RUUs look at before applying their updates.
