Hi, I just ordered my new Sola but noticed that generally, we seem to need to unlock the bootloader to get root...

p.s. I'm testing version 3.2.3 on ICS I don't think data is being backed up and restored correctly...though it should. The dev says you do NOT need root for this app, but if you do have root, more options are available.

There is a backup app installed on P that does it. I don't know if it backs up data as well tho, but I think it does. You dont have somethg like that on Sola?

I just bought my Sola :victory: so will have it next week. I'm trying to find the right backup to backup my apps and data to restore on the Sola. I don't particularly want to unlock the bootloader just yet. From what I can see, for now, it's a bit of a problem for Sola users at least. I think it's a lot of trouble to go to to just use root apps like Titanium Backup.
Any other apps you know of?

I'm testing it now...it has an app backup and restore (data also) to your computer, then back to a phone of your choice...even outside Android. It also updates apps on your phone, it has a market also.
Update: ok an app did not restore data that I tested. It does not say that in the FAQ section.
P.s. I just contacted Sony for more information on the warranty. They indicated that most issues they are getting are related to unlocking the bootloader, so in most cases, warranty will be voided. With this in mind, I will avoid the bootloader...I'm not ruining a new phone with 2 year warranty for root access.

Tomorrow night i will be reloading my phone as i would do every 6-8 months to mainly clear all the crud i accumulate! I am not rooted but would like to backup save games for my games (angry birds for example) how would i go about doing this?

Ok, if your phone is rooted, simply download titanium backup and use it to backup all of your applications and games. If you need more assistance in this, e.g. steps. Don't be shy to ask This is after all, what this forum is for!

you can only backup your personal data, and user settings stored in your phone untill you root your phone,
No applications and whatever installed in your Phone can be backed up and restore without root privilege.
EDIT: My knowledge was limited, thanks to MistahBungle for giving the idea about Mybackup Pro- I really want to purchase it for my one unrootable HTC phone, which I have to do factory reset frequently.
Not rooted = use Kies. Or MyBackup (can't vouch for how good/bad this is as I've never used it).
Easiest backup solution is rooted, use CWM to make Nandroid backup of entire system, & Ti Backup to backup apps.
Edit to add - According to the Google Play entry for My Backup Pro, it seems on a non-rooted phone you can backup apps but not app data/settings.
One huge advantage of a Nandroid backup is that you can try different firmware and restore your original quickly without flashing .
Nandroid backup of GB try ICS dont like restore GB Try custom rom dont like restore GB .

contacts, sms, photos etc arent a problem.
its just the games! well, not just any games, the kairosoft ones. i dont want too lose all my hard work on those little things!!

neither device is rooted
Desire Z is running 2.3.3 (stock)
S3 is running 4.0.4
i tried using a program via pc called "wondershare mobilego for android" but it didnt transfer the saved games. same with "moborobo" (it has the option, but only for rooted devices!)
i also tried transferring via sd card, and that didnt work either D=
i was told mybackup pro would work - fail
i've seen many people suggest titanium backup in my searches - however i have heard that it will only back up game data if the device is rooted
i am happy to root the s3 if needed to install the data (providing i can find a simple guide XD - i like to think i am pretty tech savvy, but this is just something i havent done yet!)
i've searched for hours already and from my understanding, both (?) devices have to be rooted.
however, i have seen (unless i misunderstood) that if i root my Desire Z to do the backup, i will lose my data anyway (before i backup that is).
is this true? or am i understanding this wrong?

You have to root.
Root Desire, install TiBackup, backup any apps you need.
Root S3, install TiBackup, tranfer microSD from Desire to S3 (in which the backups are on) and restore through TiBackup.
Simplest way I know of, and you don't lose data from rooting.

Titanium backup usually backups your apps to the external sd card. Anything on there is safe from rooting or fully wiping in recovery. Installing custom roms on it will not delete anything on it.
If you want to be extra safe, I would copy the titanium backup folder from your external sd card to your computer, so you have another copy of it in case something happens.

However it is my understanding that you need to root your phone in order for Titanium to be able to back up your game saves
So. My question is... does rooting cause you too lose data because that would defeat the purpose for me
No rooting will not cause loss of data.

All Rooting does is modify a few system files and if you didn't know it was Rooted you'd never notice the difference, and to put it simply everyone who's scared to Root can end up losing years worth of data when they get their new phone so you have to balance the tiny negatives with the huge positives.

(sorry guys, just want to make sure i've got it straight in my head before i do anything!! i'm not ignorant, i swear )

I want to update my phone to ICS (yeah I'm pretty slow) I am going to use flashtool to update to the latest .50 I think it is.
Anyway I tried to google it, but basically I want to back up the actually data of apps, I know there are apps for backing up your apps, but I want to keep the actual data like the levels I've completed on 100 floors etc.
I think you can uncheck 'wipe'? on flashtool that does this but I want to do a complete clean reinstall.
So my question is, is there an app that does this without root/bootloader unlocking etc. ?

No, Basically you need root to do such backup (no need to unlock)
Use titanium backup to save apk and data and when you restore the app any save will remain intact

Why not just update to ics through the phone or pc companion or seus? I did and didn't lose any app data
And titanium backup requires root anyway so if you don't want to root the phone that app will be useless to you.

Download ICS for your phone from this forum and flash it with flashtool. BEFORE pressing OK uncheck Wipe Data and Wipe Cache.

You need 2 things. Full nandroid backup - to restore your current state in case of emergency AND full backup via Titanium Backup - to restore your things on the new ROM. I always do both and never have issues!
Yes titanium will do job
Indeed if you flash 4.1.2 on your existing rom, you won't lose data (but erase root) though i always prefers clean install and recommend to factory reset after flashing rom for best performance.
After this reboot and install titanium
Select batch perform
Select scenario 'restore missing application' and you will get all application back

I dont think its a MUST... Like some body said further up I prefer a clean install.. I like starting from scratch every time.. I LOVE flashing ROMS. My phone feels brand new every time I flash
I don't know it is must for all or not, but at least for me it is. I too prefer clean flash, always factory reset whenever flashing rom. But really i never found any difference whether i restore user application by titanium or re install individual application. (once or twice only I did re install each application ) in fact it is big headache to setup each and every application from scratch with individual preferences for each application(I do have usually 150 applications) And I never wish I have to lose all the level in games I have achieved before reseting device.
One more thing, it is not practical to find hundreds of applications to re download from market one by one and install it. And if we keep backup copies of those applications in sd card then what is wrong to install backup from titanium who does same job but in batch.

Well, if you have apps that contain data that you need in the future (after a newly flashed rom or a mistake factory restore) it's a must have.
Actually I don't recommend wiping data when you're upgrading. But having Titanium is always good.
'Swyped' from my GT-N7100
No titanium Backup= if you wipe (what is higly recommended if changing the ROM base) download again every app and definitly losing every settings for these apps. It also means losing every progress in every games you may have, so starting again each game from the beginning. It also means you may lose SMS/MMS unless you back them up with another app. Having to configure again every bluetooth or wifi settings, etc
With Titanium backup= in a single operation you'll recover every app with its settings, starting your games from where you left them and not from the beginning
So yes, it's a must have!
Beside backing up, it can also fix google play problems, clean dalvick and many other features.
Ive had titanium backup on all 3 android phones I have had and can say it is really useful. Especially when you have rooted your phone

backup with cwm is deferent
if you upgrade/change rom then you need full wipe,you cant restore with cwm.
because it will make your device back to previous ROM.
but with titanium backuo after full wipe..you can restore any apks and setting only with few click..(Pro Version)
without change the ROM/kernels..
i always back up on both CWM and Titanium then put my Back Ups to my Pc..
To have certain application must or not depends on own criteria and priority, but yes if you are conscious to your data and want to remain tension free, titanium + schedule backup is best to it.
It never disappoint in case your device suddenly hang and you need wipe everything.

Hi, I'm new. I hope you could help me.
First things first. 'Sony xperia tablet Z wifi 16gb' is my first tablet and android device.
SGP3111
Android 4.4.2
Kernel 3.40-perf-g32ce454
Build 10.5.A.0.230
I upgraded it to 4.4.2 and I'm really disappointed about the restriction to write on the external sd card. I read about the new changes on the android official site, but there was nothing about sd card write permission changes. I didn't see it coming.
Is there a way to fix this problem without rooting the device? I never done something like that, I don't want to loose my warranty and it seems that there are many thing to consider.
I read that if backup my TA partition, I can eventually restore it later and keep my warranty, but I also read that I need root permission to do such thing and my bootloader must be locked. And some root procedure requires the bootloader to be unlocked.
If I root my device I won't be able to update it with official update, I'll have to do it manually.
If I change ROM, MHL won't work anymore.
Is that all right? I'm confused :\
I also don't want to loose my purchased app, my settings and my savegames.. I really spend a lot of time on this tablet. A simple backup will resolve all of that?
Is there a way to fix everything?

The only thing you can do is to root your device. I did it yesterday and now I am happy again. If there is something broken on your device you still can remove root before sending it back.
I did a Titanium Backup before. But I think this only works if you are rooted. Is this the truth? I had a great restore, everything looks like before. But there should be some data backed up to Google if you have activated this point.
You will not loose your purchased apps. Google Playstore knows which apps you have purchased in the past and you are able to load them "for free".

nice post, but I have some questions.
Did you make a TA partition backup? I read that this thing is what make your warranty still intact.
Titanium backup needs root permission, so I cannot do that. Did you use titanium app or sony pc companion backup?
Did you also restore app settings and game savegames?
Are you using 4.4.2 official kitkat with root or some other ROM? I read that MHL wont work anymore on that.

So now you know, I started with a rooted device. (My thought was to root it right after I got it, to don't loose data when I try to root it a few month later. When there was Android 4.4 I thought I will try without root. That was a very bad idea. I had so much problems with restrictions from Android. A lot of Apps were not running anymore which even did not need root with Android 4.3.) So I used Titanium Backup as backup solution and had a backup from my 4.3 rooted installation. Titanium Backup is really great. It recovered every App setting (savegames, settings) and also system settings like Wifi keys, app symbols at the screen and so on. I only had to download some big game files at the first start automatically (settings and savegames were still recovered).Titanium Backup saves the backup on your SD-card.
For your info, if you use my linked instruction, the SD-card will not be formated. But a backup is recommended.
I used the Kitkat ROM from the link, I think this is the official one.
I think google does a backup of some of your Apps settings when you are connected with your google account. Am I right? But I'm not sure which data is backed up. Can anybody else answere this question? But I think there will be a way to backup most of your data without root.
