Cannot get Yahoo messenger voice calling to work over 3G/H+ - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have installed Yahoo Messenger on the S3 including its voice and video calls plugin.
Using wifi I can make video or voice calls using YM but I just cannot use it over the Vodafone network (3G). I have 500MB of internet download unlimited browsing. Would be nice to have this feature so I can talk while on the move. Anyone else having this problem ?

On Stock rom? I just tried both voice and video calls on 3G in my SGS3 stock with vodafone and it works well. Try to reinstall the messenger and plug in and check again.

Yes, I am on stock rom. I have tried this already, thanks anyway !

So I had the same problem. I am using Yoigo from Spain, and they don't allow you to use voip. Although I found out a way to fix it, (only for Yoigo), I also figured out that I could use video chat (Google talk in my case) even if I couldn't make voip calls. I hope this also works for you

[Q] Google Voice on 2.1

Posting this to see if anyone else has this, and if any one knows how to make it work.
I use Google Voice for my international calls, but after the upgrade the dialer takes over, Google voice can not be used to "only make international calls"
i have to use "ask for every call" which is not the best solution.
[EDIT] that option does not work either
I'm having the exact same problem.
I even made several international phone calls, thinking that maybe Google Voice was running in the background... now I'll get hit with the charges for international calls from AT&T :s
Any solution to this problem?
I'm using the X10i 2.1 Global firmware on a X10a (AT&T)
hope this helps

Looks like as sony do not use default dialer it is going to be a problem

unfortunately the suggested process does not work
I found a way to make calls by google voice. I went to the browser, went to the google voice website, and from there, I placed the call. Then I received the phone call from my google number, and it connected me to the number I was calling.
It's more troublesome than just using the app, but it is a workaround.
Any other ideas or solutions?

When you do that, aren't you still using the GSM network and your sim card to have the call connected?
I am having identical problems (2.1 Nordic) and trying to use google voice over WiFi to avoid using network minutes but Sony's dialer takes over... hopefully sony or GV will update and fix this real soon... very frustrating

I use Google Voice for international calls... so I'm still using my GSM minutes, but just as a local call, not with international rates.
Have same problem. Cost me one expensive international phone call.
Generic FW, Build 2.0.A.0504 - X10i/ATT USA
GV screen comes up, then native dialer takes over. Have used workaround posted above, but naturally would just like to be able to use it as intended.
Just a heads up to anyone who has updated to 2.1.
I have the Rogers 2.1 and using AT&T as the carrier. GV does not work for ANY of my outgoing phone calls even when I specify to use GV only.
If the issue is SE's dialer, is there a way to revert back to the generic dialer?
Thanks
I'm also having this issue, only after recently upgrading my X10 to the generic 2.1 software. I wonder if anyone has found a solution yet?
I've had this problem since day 1, since I'm from Canada and use my GV to call my american / long distance friends. I have had to use the website workaround since day one, and it really bugs me. When I was working from the iPhone app, it worked properly (call me, then call the number I'm trying to call). Since switching to my X10a, I can't have it just call me, it uses the dialer directly.
So, I use up about 100-200k of my data plan to make the call. Not a big deal, just kind of annoying.

tango does a swell job on video chatting over 3g. as well as yahoo IM.
I meant to say notmal video calls just selectine a contact from phonebok and making a video call. Not through any IM.
I am currently on AXURA 2.2.7.
Even on network bar screen I cant see any 3G or H symbol at all. my subscription is 3G and am to make this call on other OS fones. Please help.
Tango or Yahoo IM both work very well you need to have the other party you are calling signed up to those accounts. So what happens is you have a separate contacts list in tango or yahoo.............. then you can call them.

currently there is no 1st party video calling for android phone. probably the only 3rd party app that is lightweight and only requires both users to have the app and a quick sign up is TANGO. its cross platform between iOS and android as well. other apps include qik, fringo, yahoo im, cracked skype , and oovoo
actually no one understood me correctly.
I am not asking about video calling through IM. I am asking about video calling to a mobile or landline no. through my network. If anyone of u hav used Symbian or WinMo u ll understand this. where we can directly make a video call to any no. through network.
Could you please also let me know where I can activate deactivate CELL INFO DISPLAY

and im telling you your options. android does not have a 1st party video chat option...only 3rd parties...and so far the best lightweight vid chat app is tango...when you call them,it'll be just like a voice call thru data and there's a button on the screen to activate video chat.
You have a inbuilt option for making a video call directly over the network instead of IM networks. Have used it on my Galaxy S. Again the service has to be enabled by the operator.
i did not know this. more info please.
I second that.

[Q] Voice and sms through 3g Stick?

I've got the 80 G9 and Archos 3G stick, when installed into my PC there is an sms app, is there any way of installing some phone voice and/ or sms functionality into the tablet?
I believe the Xoom has a partially working Google Voice hack.
I know this is a question but there's no Q&A thread, sorry.
for the sms
i use handcent sms
you can use skype... pretty cheap and you can keep your sms and call expenses separated from your internet ones...
I've got unlimited free SMS on the sim card though!
I've recieved network messages "Balance remaining £8.53" etc and WhatsApp managed to authenticate the phone number but Handscent can't send or recieve SMS.
Any more ideas?
UPDATE: SMS now working with 3rd party SMS apps (it was a sim card problem)
When they expand Google Voice to the rest of the world I'll have Voice capability too, Hopefully the Archos ICS update in 1st Q 2012 will leave phone functionality in the build.

yes well, it's a matter of choice, I tether my 3G connection from my phone to the tablet... same as I did with my old A70...
tethering via wifi burns the battery & I thought BT tether didnt work.
If you've managed to tether via BT pray tell how.
The third party sms apps I've tried are Handcent chompsms and gosms. All OK.
sorry i know its a bit off topic does anyone know where i can get a 3g stick in USA and what GSM bands it supports? thanks much!

erm, maybe you can try viber? It has this feature though(although I've never used it)
Google Voice is free for calls in the US and possibly Canada IIRC. If you set up your Google voice number to not forward calls, and use the GrooveIP app. The Lite version will work fine for wifi only, but if you want to use 3G or find the app useful and want to support the dev while getting extra features, get the paid version.
Can you call numbers too or do you have to have the contacts themselves like skype?
Google voice is NOT a VOIP service, just a call forwarding service. You might want to give this thread a look.
:Edit: I didn't read spunker88's reply thoroughly enough. The thread I mentioned has a lot of information about setting up VOIP as he recommends.

Yes, you can call any US number, landlines or cell phones using GrooveIP which uses your Google Voice account. The app itself is done pretty well, it acts as a dialer and allows you to dial your phone's contacts through it.
Just be aware that this with this setup you'll have a separate phone number and you'll have to leave GrooveIP running while connected to wifi in order to receive calls.

VoIP to non-VoIP users

Hello,
I would like to know if there is a way, setting, app, hack or workaround for calling via VoIP to a non-VoIP user from an Android smartphone using 3G/EDGE without charging you minutes, just using MB.
Thanks
The simplest way to do this is to use the Google Hangouts Dialer app.
This will only work in 3G, not EDGE unless you have a really really good connection.
I also don't know if this will work outside the USA - which country are you in?
Ok I will give it a try, I am a bit afraid of google recording everything that drops by it's servers though.
I live in Spain.
