Network issues - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First of all HI to everyone. This is my first post on XDA so if I messed something up dont be too harsh..
The question is: My S2 every once in a while losses network. Sometimes it happens during calls, or sending sms, browseing... If I remember correctly it didnt happen while I was on gingerbread. Any ideas? If yes please point me to the right thread.

Thanks in advance..

You have old version of the kernel. Get newer here: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/public/files/siyahkernel/v4/Siyah-s2-v4.1.2-CWM.zip

Try other modem too .. Like XXLPS that's reported to be very good

if thats all that takes I cant help you enough... will try it when I get back from work.

any other suggestions/ideas before I try this. I'm fairly new to android operated mobiles so I dont want to f*ck something up..

No problems with IMEI
GetRIL: baseband is matching

I live in Croatia and my provider is Vipnet...
I've read numerous posts and topics about this problem but havent found a fix. Hopefully someone will point me in the right direction... Thanks!

If it was me Id try a few combos to see if its software or hardware.
Gb with getril/without getril
Ics with getril/without getril
Personally I dont like getril.....

It's because of siyah kernel. Use newer version of siyah, this one does not dropped calls.

OK, which one should I get than??

DorimNx 5.92 is perfect.
Siyah latest 5.0.1 is good, but high battery usage.
Latest dorimanx v7.xx had low 3d scores....
I suggest dorimanx 5.92 plus xwlq3 rom, not an single dropped calls.

Updateing siyah did the trick. No sudden call drops or lost of network since I updated.

[Q] Strang network/signal problem in Galaxy S2 I9100G

Hi Friends,
My Samsung Galaxy S2 (I9100G) has a strange network issue. My phone suddenly becomes unreachable and network does not reconnect automatically but it shows full signal bars on the display. I have to restart the phone then only it works. It happens many time in a day.
My phone has offical 2.3.6 without any customization done on it. I installed ICS also but facing same issue.
Model: I9100G
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband version: I9100GDDKI1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKJ2
Please let me know fix for this issue.
Thanks
Try changing modem version.

I'm having the exact same issue. How do you change the modem version?
By flashing modem file as phone in Odin or by CWM.
For CWM: http://veyka.co.uk/radios
Try GetRIL from Google Play, this should fix your problems.
Baseband and Modem version do not match, thats why your having this problem.

[Q] Can I flash a custom ROM ?

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum.
Currently I'm using my SGS II with ICS Stock (4.0.4) upgraded through Samsung Kies (hope it clears that I've stock ROM).
My Baseband version : I9100DDLPB
Kernel Version : 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT
Build Number : IMM76D.XWLPW
I've recently rooted my phone to flash the custom ROM.
But today i checked some posts from this forum that, flashing a SGS II running on Stock 4.0.4 may brick the handset here.
I read the complete post and got very much disappointed that I couldn't flash any custom ROM from my Stock ROM, but lastly I looked over the firmwares which have these emmc bug and found that my device is not in the list.
So with this information can anybody tell me whether I can go for flash the custom ROM ? or do I need to flash a new Kernel ?
Thanks,
Hereticnine.
If it's not listed as an 'insane chip' (affected by the emmc bug then it should be safe to wipe. But if you're gonna be flashing a custom ROM eventually, you may as well flash a custom kernel now itself. Just to be completely safe, ya know?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
install eMMC Check from Play Store, and see whether you have a faulty chip
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
My Bad !!!!
Just now checked with an app available on Google Play, eMMC Brickbug Check and got the result as "Insane Chip".
Also tried with Got Brick bug found in this forum. It also said the same like DANGER !!! :crying: :crying:
So I think, customization is over for me !!!! I should stay out from flashing ROMs.
And HAXTREME, Thanks for the reply.
Thanks,
Hereticnine.
Flash a safe kernel which has MMC_CAP_DISABLED (e.g. siyah kernel) on your rom with odin. You will get yellow triangle but you can remove it later with triangle away if you want to
From that point on you can flash any custom rom you want or or do a wipe from cwm...
Key is making sure you're running a safe kernel all the time, then you should have no problems, as long as you flash roms which are compatible with I9100 international version

Correct.
I would not wait for Samsung fixing anything in regards of this matter. The community has brought this huge issue to their attention long time ago and nontheless they released / keep releasing (?) dangerous updates to their customers!
Elite Recognized Developer "Entropy512" has written a very interesting (and long!) story of his experiences with Samsung:

No problems flashing siyah because emmc bug is disabled.
AS to an update from Samsung I do not believe there will be one as they are releasing Jellybean by the endof the year,
JB uses a totally different file structure.

I've downloaded the latest Siyah Kernel, I'll try to flash it and hope it goes without any issues.
Please tell me if I need to take care of anything else while flashing Siyah Kernel.
I did the nandroid backup & took all other back ups using Titanium.
Hope it suffices for flashing.
Thank you.

Well, about the brick bug, I just know there's a app to detect the chip and unfortunately my phone has the insane chip. but if I'm not mistaken I've been wiped my phone several times with 4.0.4 stock kernel before yet it's still safe till now, it's the checker or I'm just being lucky? but nevermind there's leaked 4.1.2 now haha..

AFAIK the brick bug is non-deterministic. So you could wipe data several times without a problem n suddenly one time you try it n your phone is a rather expensive paperweight. If your phone indeed has an 'insane chip' count yourself lucky and don't risk it too often.

you will never be totally free of the brick bug, since it is embedded in the kernal. Developers of Philz, Dorimanx and others have edit the code that cause the brick bug to disable it.
When flashing avoid using any stock kernal from 4.0.4 and above to avoid the embedded brick bug software.

[Q] About to flash Kernel

Hello, coming from a Nokia user, this is my first time using android phone.
My specifications:
Mobile version: GT-I9100
Android Version: 4.0.4
BaseBand: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version: 3.0.15-1060868 (The damned Kernel, thought it's an unknown chip on Chainfire's app and a sane chip on the other app)
PDA: LPJ
PHONE: LQ6
I am concerning the bugged stock kernels of 4.0.4, so I decided to flash Siyah kernel version 5.0.1 using Odin.
Please recommend for me the version of Odin and supervise the whole process, and how risky it may be.

There are enough of tutorials on how to flash a kernel via Odin. So feel free to use the search button.
Its simple and safe. Just ensure you use the TAR version of siyah 5.0.1 while flashing via Odin.
EDIT: @above- the link you posted is for the i777 not i9100. They have different key combinations to be used to enter download mode. For the i9100 its Vol down + home + power. Please do not mislead.

3 Questions: (I am paranoid ) Q1: Will the Siyah 5.0.1 go compatible with the STOCK android 4.0.4?
Q2: Will flashing this kernel lead to data/apps loss?

We're all paranoid when we're screwing around with our phones the first time around. But if you follow the tutorials properly, you have nothing to be worried about.
1. It is. But if you're installing a custom kernel its usually to install a custom ROM. So why exactly are you installing siyah if you plan on sticking to stock 4.0.4?
2. No.
3. I don't think so. But if you install the leaked 'official' JB firmware, it'll replace whichever kernel you have anyways. So unless you're planning on installing siyah AFTER installing the leaked JB, this shouldn't be an issue.

I just want to get rid of the stock kernel, and root the phone(back my stuff with titanium before I get the JB or a custom ROM).
Oh man. I really need a point in the right direction. I've been reading all day about this, but I'm worried I'll totally stuff things up if I proceed with out confirmation with what I'm doing.
I received my GS2 from Kogan website yesterday, followed the "How to Root Galaxy S2 i9100! [ICS]" (sorry can't post direct link yet) now everything is great, however the bluetooth with not turn on. It doesn't go bright green when switched on, it stays a dull green and then turns off again. AAAARGH.
Origional Kernel . 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505 [email protected] #3

PDA: LPJ

Is this fixable? I've tried really hard to find the origional Kernal so I can put that back on with ODIN. Or should I put Siyah Kernel on?
I had lite'ning ROM on my last GS2, though was wanting to stay a little more stock this time around, as it's not vodafone branded.

[Q][Solved] Need help with compatibility check Siyah Kernel on NeatRom

Hi guys,
I have rooted my i9100 (JB 4.1.2) and flashed it with MS2 NeatROM v5.6 Aroma, which works fine except for the battery life which has plummeted dramatically since I've flashed it. Now I'm hoping to resolve this issue by flashing SiyahKernel S2-v5.0.1 (wish I could post a link but I can't because Rooky forum member).
My questions are:
1. Is the Siyah kernel I’ve selected compatible with my device and ROM? Will it work?
2. How do you check compatibility of kernels vs. installed rom and device? Phone firmware?
3. Can kernels in general improve/influence battery life?
Note!!: I am NOT looking for an opinion on how the combination ROM, Kernel, and Device will turn out, or which is best, I am merely asking if my selected Kernel is compatible with the ROM and device. I am new to rooting and do not know what details in flashed ROM and device specs to pay attention to when selecting a kernel, hence my questions.
Phone details:

Just for comparison,
I installed
neatrom 5.3 neatrom + aroma v 5.5
and used v6.0.1.2 siyah kernel to root it in the first place.
I'm now looking for a custom rom for overclocking, I put one called Boeffla on my S3 that has an app to go with it for tuning, my score on quadrant has jumped up about 3000 points after some overclocking :good:

Is not that
Siyah-s2-v6.0b5-CWM?
2. You have to choose/select kernel according to the build number (settings/about phone)
3.yes they have a significant impact on battery life.
You can improve your battery life by using custom kernels.

Yes, Siyah-s2-v6.0b5-CWM is the newest update. But because it is a beta I assumed it would not be stable. Perhaps I am wrong about that.
So you're saying I need a kernel that runs on buildnumber XWMS2 (my buildnumber)?

You can flash that kernel on your current rom .
And when choosing kernel like siyah dorimax apolo
You have to see their version which is mentioned in op of the respective kernel .
For e.g apolo v4.x is for jb 4.1.2 roms
For some kernels like philz ..you have to see the build number.

There shouldn't be any issues when going from philz to siyah. I haven't used siyah for a while but remember flashing neat with siyah without problems. BTW if you're going to try out dorimanx with neat you should use 8.*** version. If you ask there prepare for some tongue lashing
