sdcard not freeing up space after app removal - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I downloaded NOVA 3 for my S2 - a process which took about 8 hrs !
After playing the game I found it wasnt for me so I deleted the app.
However the sdcard has not 'freed up' the 1.8G of data space. I`ve rescanned the card, checked all files I can think of on both internal & ext sd cards but cant find an appropriate file, the gameloft folder just has data for another game. I read somewhere about the LOST+FOUND file in /system but this is empty too. anyone come across this before ?

App removal did nothing to game's cache, which is stored on your SD Card. It chould be in Android folder on your internal memory. Just search for "nova".

hi. I cant find any file like this. Ive ran a search from root and its pulled up nothing for NOVA. When you say internal memory - do you mean at root level or the internal sdcard ?

Sorry. I was being thick. I've found this folder but the only relevant files I can see relate to 2 other gameloft games I have installed, could the data be elsewhere or is it a different type of error perhaps ?

solved !
Found it... the data was in external_SD/android/data..and the file name didn't show Nova but n3. Thanks to all.

[Q] Changing MicroSD broke half my apps

So I got my 32 GB card today. I plugged in my phone copied my external sd stuff to a new folder, switched cards then copied the folder contents on to the new card. I also transferred some pictures from the internal memory to the new card. Now many of my apps claim to be not installed any more. I never did use anything like apps2sd or anything like that. I figured it would work for me to keep internal for apps and external for media.
Thoughts, ideas?

let me guess, you copied the files and folders with windows explorer? if so then you missed the hidden folders that start with a dot (.) which holds the apps that are/were installed to sd..
If u still got the old card and havent formatted it yet you can still copy them, just enable "show hidden files" in windows explorer (google it) and copy them.

Mac OSX. Still don't remember installing any apps to sd, unless the apps themselves did it. I don't have any directories, etc that I copied or moved that pertains to the apps

So I put the old card back and the apps are working, so that is good news. Next step is I am creating a disk image from the old card (disk utility ftw) and I will use that to restore on to the new one, making it a carbon copy.
Hopefully this works
Slow process!

Now that I have everything working again, I'll be sure to do a backup before I break everything. Since it's been a couple weeks since I did one, I am relieved that I didn't have to restore

Memory Full problem! Please take a look..

Hey there guys...
To start with i have my S3 two days now and i absolutely love this phone...:')
But,after installing lots of games my internal memory has gone full and i can't download any data in-game because i have low storage space...
My external sd on the other hand is around 10gb free but when i try to move the data to the same folder on the external the data isn't identified by the game and it asks me to download again?
It has become really frustrating,it seems i can't do anything about it...
Any suggestions to try?
Cheers,George
As the system now uses unified storage all apps will remain on internal memory; moving the data alone to an external SD card will have no use without altering the application to look for that location for its data. i.e. in the GS2 you had a move to SD option since the phone was partitioned. With the S3 however this option is not there which means that when an application is downloaded all of its information needs to be stored on the internal storage. When the "Move to SD" option was selected within the S2 or prior phones, it informs the application that its new location is within x folder rather than the folder it was originally downloaded too. Since this option is no longer there then the application has no way of being told where its new location is.
Maybe move to SD could be an add-on with a mod/hack but I am not sure if this is possible. Maybe check with a developer?
Have you got a prior Android phone? Maybe install the application on to it; use the "Move to SD" option and see if that will allow it? It's just a suggestion; if you don't have a different Android phone I can try it for you.
Edit: Just tried it; the phone itself doesn't even check for applications stored within an external SD. Sorry man - the only way around it would be a mod/custom/hack (if possible).

I did check for you; the S3 physically doesn't look for application data in the external SD (I edited original post after testing few things).. There probably are ways around it as mentioned but you would need to speak with developers for further insight.
If worst comes to worst application developers may have to implement a look in x location first, if no data found, look "here" in to their applications.
As the phone is unified storage you can store applications in the full ~12GB storage space (All the ones I have, have roughly 11.3GB after OS and all is on it) so have you used the phones storage itself for only applications; and the SD for media etc?
I am interested to know how you have managed to fill at least 11GB of space with applications; how many do you have? How is the performance of the phone with this many applications on it? Any lag navigating (I know there shouldn't be with quad core processor - but it's interesting to know if hundreds of applications cause lag between screen scrolling).
You can use an app called directory bind to link the game data on the SD to a mounting point on the internal SD. Search for it and you'll find it, not sure if I got it here or the play store.

Yup, there's directory topic on forum, as well as working 'gl to sd' app in play store. It is not just for gameloft games.

Thank you all guys!!
Well i filled it with lots of games that's why i don't have much space available!
No the phone is flying,it doesn't lag at all!
I use Dragon Ics rom and Siyah Kernel...no oc....
I'll try directory bind and post back soon!
To put applications on the sdcard, you could use symlinking (confirmed this works myself).
Install the application, then go to /data/app and move the apk file to your sdcard (/mnt/extSdCard) or inside a folder on your sdcard.
Then type ln -s /mnt/extSdCard/your-apk.apk /data/app/your-apk.apk

[Q] SGS III - ext. SDCard suddenly ReadOnly

Today I found - after trying to make a foto - that my SDCard doesn't seem to be not accessibl anymore - at least the cam app says this. After some ivestigation I found out that the SD is still accessible but all files and folders are in read-only mode. I checked the perms with ESFileExplorer and found no hint why (775 was set correctly) however the properties dialog of differnt file managers always says read-only. I tried to access, remove and create files/folders via pc o that card (format FAT32) w/o any problems. So I made a backup and format the card within the phone and what shall I say - it seems to work again.
Does anybody have an idea what this may have caused?
SGS III + JB 4.1.2 I9300XXELL5_I9300VFGELL1_VD2 + XXELL5_JKay_Deluxe_Stock_v14_5_4 + rooted with SGS Toolkit
Thanks a lot!!!
BTW: I used the search function already but I did not find an explainantion which matches fully to my problem
Possibly found a reason
Hm, may have found 2 possible reasons for that behaviour:
- SolidExplorer (strange behviour as after start of it a lot of files partly w/o filname (only . or @ or y) are displayed, partly not visible in other file managers and after some time I can't delete/change no file on that card anymore)
- Too high value vor SDBooster (used 1024 now reduced to 512) - but for my understanding this should not be the reason as it was working for a long time w/o problems.
Will investigate later and will inform about the outcome...
Help on this thread please.
Same problem here.. My torrents, my camera, sms backup and restore, titanium backup, everything else specially those i set as daily scheduled activities always end up having unsuccessful results..
The problem can be worked around by unmounting->re-mounting sd-card..... every 5 minutes or so...
HELP!!
format it
Why didn't I think of that in the first place? Geez..
So anyone here who really understands the problem?
Note(2)worthy response using Tapatalk HD.
I have exactly the same issue as you, at the very beginning, i notice this problem when i was taking photo and said my sdcard is not accessible, it then changes to use internal storage.
Let me list out my symptom and solution:
Symptom:
1. The sdcard looks fine, no special error thrown during android startup.
2. Just after startup, i am able to write file /copy file to the external sdcard
3. After a while, the external sdcard becomes read only. I can view/copy files from sd card, but not write/copy file to the external sdcard.
4. No apps can modify the files in external sdcard
5. By using ADB shell, type mount, and you will notice the /extSdCard is mounted as "ro", which means read only.
Description:
If you have the above symptom, your external sdcard probably have some problems...
When I was checking the mount details on step 5, i noticed that the default options is onerrors=remount-ro , it looks like the external sdcared is remounted as read-only because it has problem on external sdcard....
Solution:
I put the external sdcard to a Windows PC, and run scan disk (right click the drive >"properties" > "tools" > Check Now).
It really find problem on the FAT of the external sd card!!! It fix automatically and my external sd card is working fine now.
In my case, it doesn't need to root or format the sdcard.
Good luck!

Internal memory almost full, no idea why

Hi, I have a s3 international version, rooted and cm11 on it. My internal memory is almost full and I can't seem to move apps to external sd card. Also, a few months ago I had 5 gigs of space left, now 900mb... Did a complete whipe and started all over again, but still 900mb free memory. Is there a way I can delete everything, maybe go back to stock an start all over?
Thanks
Camera, or game data files, or changing rom to rom
1.When you switch from rom to rom( like 4.1.2 to 4.2.2) it leaves the previous rom's files in an folder named '0'..
2. when you may put some pirated games, after wipe.. the folder( data files) still exist
3. well, have you been recording a lot of videos or took a lot of pics??
I did have a few '0' folders, but I deleted them al.
Could be a few app folder, but definitely not 4gigs.and I have maybe 50 photos on it and no films.
Would it be bad if I deleted everything on the internal sd?
I also have a folder storage/emulated/0 and storage/emulated/legacy. In both are the same files. Can I delete 1 of the 2 entirely?
Thanks for the fast reply btw

To be on your place I would install Root Manager from G.Play and carefully looked inside. In acc to result i would be acting next step. And probably you will find another 0 folder. ( personal experience)

Use any file explorer (ES file explorer has one) which has storage space analysis tools.
That'll help you to locate the folders which are using most of the space.

system data in my sdcard take a huge size (fix)

Today i notice that i can't save anymore in my sdcard.i Check my sdcard using diskusage application,i saw that 20 GB of my sdcard space is taken by system data.
What this? And how can i delete this ??
Don't worry,i fix it.
I connect the sd card to my pc,and i saw one hidden folder which not showing in any file browser in my phone even if i enable the hidden folders ( strange)
The name of this folder is : Found.000 which have 19.8 GB in size.
I delete it and everything is back to normal again
did it happen again? the point is to find why does this happen and
I have the same issue when I delete large files or folders,
they are moved in system data,
I haven't found the culprit yet
It's windows "fault".
You can read more here https://www.howtogeek.com/282798/what-are-the-found000-folder-and-file0000chk-file-in-windows/
ok but why does Android move to system data instead of delete?

Have you solved anyway?
I have the same problem, no hidden folder found.
I had to backup my data on PC and then format it.
I formatted my card as exfat, it was the only way my files would delete immediately
