I think a lot of the time people get excited and anxious about something new and just start flashing before reading. I'm not saying that is always the case, but it seems to happen a lot.

Yea but that shouldnt brick the.phone i mean ive been around a lil while and ive never seen so many problems even with the 3d and the 1.5 hboot fiasco...either we got a influx of noobs or something is borked somewhere right?
Sent from the depths of hell

9 times out of 10 people who think they're bricked aren't actually bricked, they just don't know what the term means.

Yea, could be corrupt downloads, flashing things out of order, trying to take an OTA while rooted. There's so many ways to screw something up.

It could also be the fact that many people are not following the directions for flashing, etc. exactly as specified. They deviate from the procedure, such as executing a dirty flash of kernel bits, etc. and wonder why they are bricked. In addition, most people that complain about being bricked aren't bricked at all. They don't even know what bricked means, as they can get to fastboot, recovery, etc.
I would like to see a sticky in the Q&A forum, which consolidates most of the known issues that leads to these issues, how to avoid them in the first place, and known problems and resolutions.
This would prevent 90%+ of all the problems reported.
We don't have a problem with faulty HTC code here. We do have a problem with n00b-driven operator error.

Sent from the depths of hell

Write ups are always good to have, but they do no good when so many people don't search or read and just download files, flash them, something goes wrong, and then come asking about it, when they should search and read some more. Not to be a pessimist, but that seems to be the pattern lately.

[Q] Weird stuff going on with my phone

My phone has been acting up today. It has been very laggy/slow and it's as if my touch isn't being recorded well. Also, it froze for a while, and at one point, it got stuck and kept moving an app icon back and forth (shaking) repeatedly.
I haven't done a clean wipe yet, but it's sounding like a hardware issue.
Can anyone confirm? (Don't want to bother wiping and doing all my settings again if it is a hardware issue).

1) you've given absolutely no information to be able to help you.
2) if you're too lazy to fully wipe you're phone to see if that fixes the issue, why would you post a thread about it. Doesn't really sound like you want this issue resolved.
3) prior to posting this thread you should have: A. Fully wiped your device to see if that was the cause. B. Gave enough info for someone to be able to help you. Like what rom are you running. What kernel. Have you flashed any boot loaders. What have you tried yourself already in an attempt to fix the issues?
So basically it sounds as though you want others to do the foot work for you. That's not really cool dude.

No, I was just looking for information. You don't have to talk to me like that. It's a hassle to set up everything the way I had it, so if it is a hardware issue, I see no point in bothering with it. All I was asking if anyone knew if these were hardware failure symptoms or whatever.
Anyway... I'm on ICScrewed 2.1 with Entropy's latest GB kernel. No bootloaders or anything. Haven't really messed with my phone. And I don't know what to try to fix it. That is why I posted this. To see if any of these symptoms are familiar to anyone else who can give feedback instead of bashing me.
He's correct but it definitely could've been articulated a little more hospitable. This is supposed to be a helpful forum. One way you can be sure its not hardware is to go into the developer options and check the pointer location setting. That will tell you how android is reading your touch screen. But its more then likely the from try wiping cache/dalvik if not then you may have to do a full wipe. Sorry dude.

I've seen many of your posts. All you do is bash on people. Secondly, I know how to flash ROMS, and I don't run into very many problems. Thirdly, no one is born to be a genius that knows how to fix everything the second something goes wrong. Your logic is flawed. You're just an ass. And what does the title have to do with anything? This isn't JUST for developers. And I like how you talk about learning and growing, yet you just bash people who are starters. How do you expect anyone to learn like that? Grow up.

Save myself some hassle? That's actually what the point of this thread was. To save me the hassle of having to return to stock and what not and reapplying all my settings, tweaks, alarms, etc. But people had to be dicks and troll essentially instead of offering useful feedback, leading me to go through it all anyway. And I don't even know if this is going to fix it permanently. Furthermore, I like to gain information and know my options before I start doing stuff here and there.

This is the reason i posted what i did . You got your answer very early on, from a recognized developer noless. And my posts don't flame people or laugh at their mistakes or anything like that. Most of them tell people to search and read before flashing again, and if i remember where something is ill even point them in a general direction that will result in them learning . Im pretty straight and to the point. Nothing i do is personal on here. Good luck, hope your problem is resolved.

Update: The problem persists, even after going back to stock, re-rooting, reflashing, etc.
You should now determine if the behavior persists after returning to stock. I had issues on icscrewed as well, not the same, but issues. Also, why would you want to run a rom that mimics real ics roms when you have a ton of real ics roms that work great?

Please help, stuck at splash screen after trying to flash cyanogenmod 10.

Long story short, kind of a newb, but flashed roms on my original evo years ago, so not completely dumb to all of this. I'm on hour 6 trying to get this fixed on my 4g LTE, while watching two little kids, and cannot get it, so I am asking for help from the community. I'm stuck at the splash screen and will not go any further.
My phone was updated to latest OTA (HBOOT 1.19), and S-ON. Thought I had the correct tutorial, and use the workaround, but it screwed me. I first did the HTCdev unlock method, and downloaded the latest nightly cyanogenmod 10 build. I used abd to flash boot.img. After restart, it just stays on the splash screen. I then flashed TWRP, backed up, and this is where I'm stuck. From what I read, I'm supposed to install dumlock, but my phone gets stuck on splash screen.... so .... now what? Please help, either going back to OEM, or to fix and continue cyanogenmod 10 flash.

Figured I was going to get **** for this, but thanks for the replies, guess we all cannot be uber android giniuses.. Google searches for some reason did not come up with results from xda. I did know I needed a workaround for boot 1.15 and 1.19, my probl em was with the ROM file itself... for some reason it would not install, even though it all seemed to be there. I re downloaded and tried 3 times, each gave me multiple errors accessing directories. The 4th worked and all is good.

the problem is that it doesnt take a genius, these threads are popping up like crazy even by people who have rooted other devices but the problem is that all these devices are different, even the same make/model will not produce the same results across multiple devices, people just need to take the time to sit down and learn the basics for android customization, one guy had s-off and decided to fastboot the kernel, somehow he managed to obliterate his recovery as well, another guy kept trying lazy panda to s-off his hboot 1.15, there are some kind and helpful people on xda but this is ridiculous, ive even taken to pm'ing users as a way to lessen the threads popping up, if you take the time to read the guides posted then take extra time to read about the failures, they help the most, it sounds horrible to me but reading about their failure and seeing possible solutions will help you avoid them

[TUT] Flashing with hboot 1.15 & higher

Ok some of you may know me and i probably yried to help some of you so here is a guide for the new/inexperienced rooter.
welcome to xda youve probably found yourself here because youve rooted your shiny new LTE. Congrats. Now you wanna install and mod it. Follow these rules and you *shouldnt* have issue.if s-on anf hboot 1.12 flash as normal or use lazypanda to get soff while you still can!
1. Read read read
2. Unless s-off use fastboot to flash boot.img
3. Make sure boot.img is compatible with your rom/firmware i.e 1.13 1.22 2.13 *boot.img is kerne*
4. Dont post new thread for the same question asked already use search function
5. Enjoy your new rom
Side note use sense kernels with sense roms aosp kernels with aosp roms
Follow this link for fastboot instructions (thanks rxpert)

Its a decent start. The problem is most people having the kernel flashing issues dont know what most of that means.
You have to give them the directions step by step as I have done here
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/606748-how-install-kernels-h-boot-1-15-a.html
Also, S-ON users with 1.12 do not have any of these problems and can flash normally

im waiting for the day that someone writes the most anti-rooting, blatantly hostile disclaimer like dont do this you will void warranty, you will damage the health of your phones nand memory, you will corrupt the file structure cache and dalvik you will destroy recovery, do not under any circumstances assume that rooting, installing recovery or flashing any rom through the action or inaction there of the developer is at all safe at any time. do not ever do this under any circumstances. without further ado this is how to root and s-off your htc evo 4g lte
That would be epic lol

you know, today i was actually thinking about starting a google hangout specifically to trouble shoot for these people but my clear reception totally sucks and it kept kicking me off the net before i could even try. im really likeing the idea of starting hangouts specifically to help troubleshoot and educate, though it could be because i volunteer to teach kids on the weekends and i quite enjoy the job

Of course it is, I thought of it and I only make stupid decisions when Im tanked or Im trying to impress the gf. Really the only reason I thought it would make such a good idea is because I run a small business on the side, I repair and upgrade computers and most of my customers are small business owners so as a sort of bonus I will look at their business and migrate them to linux. I very often use some form of desktop sharing to help ease them into the new software when im on a tight schedule but they need help.

[Q] Q: Back to stock?

So I know XDA is full of answers to this one, but it seems everyone either has some snarky comment like, "they won't check' or whatever. There are also some ok answers and tuts but some of it's confusing and a lot of the threads go off topic. So i'd like to ask, how do i get my phone back to stock? i have to mail my device back in for a warranty exchange as the speakers and camera stopped working suddenly.
My device is stock rooted, odex rom w/ TWRP. unlocked bootloader. Super CID and S-off. Tampered message gone in boot loader. My laptop runs Windows 8, which I'm having an issue getting the HTC manager to stay open for some reason, even after an uninstall/ reinstall of the manager and drivers. The drivers themselves seemed to have installed fine as my device is recognized as "my HTC" though when in fastboot, my comp will tell me the device is unrecognized. Using the stock usb plug that came with my phone and I've plugged in to both usb 3.0 and 2.0 ports. And yes, I do have ADB in the root of my computer, though I'm wondering if i need a different type of ADB since this is the one i used with windows 7 a while back..or does it matter?
I'd like to get things back to stock as much as possible and would be very appreciative. Thanks!
You complain about the snarky comments people make yet you make a thread on a subject that has been beaten to death and has a buttload of snarky comments every time because of it. Just read and you'll find your answer, it's not too hard

Really? Really bro? This is the dang troubleshooting section of the frigging thread, meant for asking questions like this, and ya gotta be a ****? Go die in a fire. You just reaffirmed my reason for not coming to this forum much. Rude, nasty people like you. Thanks so much.

Wow dude way to take what someone says on a forum way too far. I was in no way rude or nasty or a ****. You asked for that kind of response when you asked this question. Just because this is the troubleshooting section doesn't mean you shouldn't do your research before posting about a topic that's been beaten to death.
P. S. It's hypocritical to call someone rude and nasty and then tell them to die in a fire.

Maybe it would do you some justice to NOT go the route that I'd already forsaw. You were snarky and you response in no way solves a problem that I sat down for 3 hours trying to troubleshoot on an operating system I'm still learning since i just got comp last week. And maybe if you actually understood reading comprehension, you'd have seen that I'd obviously done my research, otherwise I wouldn't have made the conclusions I'd made in my OP. So yeah, I'm pretty pissed.

You could not possibly have researched for 3 hours and still had the need to post instead of doing what said research told you to do. It shouldn't have taken longer than 5 minutes to find your solution. Nothing I said was snarky you got the response you deserved and I don't care how pissed you are personal attacks are not allowed here.

Ok, whatever you say. i didn't do the leg work and i couldn't fin the straight forward answers I needed. It' cool. Someone was actually decent enough to point me in the right direction and not be rude about it.
Oh and for the record, what I really needed to know was how to go back to S-on and change the CID back to stock. I still have my files for the latter and i have an idea of what to do, but I'd rather not go testing crap out on a phone i'm trying to return.

Thanks for the quick reply. Um..I just ran into an issue and i hope it isn't a big one. First, the RUU won't run. And error pops up saying "make sure you have finished any previous setup and try again". I DLed this RUU straight from HTC.
Second, i'm in bootloader, tried to do a full reboot and instead it boots back into bootloader. Now on the top, the tampered had returned, as I used CMD to make it go away, and in pink is also a "security warning". The phone won't boot into anything else. The phone is locked. I got S-on with Revone, and i used CMD to write stock CID, which I rebooted each time to make sure nothing messed up.
Edit: Nevermind, after re downloading the RUU, I got it working properly and things smoothed out. Thank you again.

Don't exaggerate. I post that when it's necessary to post that. When help is deserved I more than gladly help but someone asking how to get back to stock does not necessitate a thread being made, hence my response.

[Q] Help flashing rom

OK so I;m a total noob to this awesomeness, but my problem is no matter how many apps Ive downloaded to help me flash a ROM to my Galaxy s4 SCH-I545 I simply do not see the advanced options in recovery mode. Am I doing something horribly wrong or is it a simple fix that I will probably feel totally embarrassed about. Also the little green android dude always shows error above it.Please Help

You really need to educate yourself. Just jumping in like it appears you are will only cause a lot of problems. No one is going to take you step by step through the entire process. Read, read, read. Research as much as you can. Then research some more. It's the best thing you can do.

Do you even know what your build number is? Are you rooted? If so, what method did you use to root? What recovery are you trying to use?

If you actually did research you would know that you can't install a custom recovery to a MK2 build. Your ONLY option is Safestrap. (Search).
Good luck.

"They" said Vroot was safe to use.
Did "They" also tell you to then try to flash a custom recovery like TWRP? Then "They" lied.
You're on MK2. As I've told five or six people today, you can't have a custom recovery on any I454 other than those on the MDK build.
First, there's several different phones called the Galaxy S4. The hardware and software aren't the same between vendors. The Verizon model is VERY locked down and won't permit you to flash custom ROMs. For you, on MK2, Safestrap is the only way to custom flash.
Read the threads here on Safestrap and the thread in the development forum to help you understand what you can do.
They're long threads, but read them. If you can't spend the time to read, don't flash, as you'll just brick your phone.

Thank you for understanding. I am sorry I am a noob and as expected I didn't know what exactly to research up. I didn't know as a NOOB that I said I was that the build number was my problem. There for I researched what I did know and you can see when i became a member and when I decided to post this and every day in between I was trying different methods on how to get a custom ROM on my phone. Luckily for me you were very resourceful and I learned a great deal from you and appreciate it a lot. I know what you are doing is really aggravating and i praise you for your knowledge. I just hope next that next time we are in contact and I knowingly ask a noobish question you will be a little more understanding with me. The only reason that I posted on here was because I felt that I had tried every possible way and was doing something wrong and it happens to be that I just couldn't do it the ways I was researching up. Thanks a lot for all your help boss man I hope soon enough I can pick your brain for all the knowledge you have when I come across another problem with rooting a different device or just some questions about a certain Rom.
Ok so I just want to say thank you all for your help and the advice you gave me it was totally awesome. I got it to work and now im running Hyperdrive on my galaxy s4. thank you so much.

there is nothing mean about commenting on researching and fully understanding before proceeding. We have dozens of posts every day in this forum by "noobs" who don't take 5 minutes to read anything. And then expect massive help when they screw their phones up....
There are all sorts of youtube videos on just about every aspect of GS4. We have countless threads on what you can and can't do to the GS4 and yet every single day we have new posters asking why they can't load any rom they want or whats taking so much time to get a bootloader unlocked,,,,we have dedicated Devs who basically donate their time to all of us. The least we can do is educate ourselves in what we can and can't do....

And you are very right with your statement I completely agree with you. But as a noob to this I tried to educated myself as much as possible The only thing I hate more is not being able to figure something out on my own. But I had no clue what was my problem to the fact that I couldn't flash a rom with all the possibilities and programs at my disposal. It was just not knowing what to search not the fact that all noobers are lazy

Sorry if you think I'm being a jerk, but I wasn't exaggerating. Five to ten people come here just about every day wondering why their phone bricked due to trying to install custom recovery when spending just an hour of two reading this forum would have made it clear that they can't do that.
Trust me, I wasn't being mean, simply blunt. I'm astonished by anyone that thinks that flashing random stuff onto a $600 phone without spending an hour or two to understand what they're doing is a good idea.
I'm not saying you don't have the right to be mean because you do but before you are just figure out if they are Are the stupid noobs or the ones that actually took the time to try to search but couldn't come up with anything. Just remember not every is a complete idiot of a noon.
The thing is that we all were noobs once, but we didn't ask anyone to hold our hands. Unfortunately I can't say I believe you tried as hard as you say you did OP. I mean if your new to rooting, the first thing you should do is search google or youtube for a guide. That's a pretty basic realization all of us had when we learned about this hobby. If you had read or watched any of those guides, you would know everything in rooting depends on a device's bootloader status and how to learn the status of your own bootloader. Then you would've known where to begin in searching in XDA. XDA clearly states it is a site for development & developers, so question's that are covered in any of the thousands of beginner guides get met with harsh responses.

We all have our beliefs and no one can argue but all I'm saying is that the only thing that stopped me was that I didn't know that the me7/mk2 build could not be flashed like I tries through Odin or goo manager or any of the other 10 ways I tried. But once I found out about safestrap it was all good money. And I thank everyone on here for the advice.

joshm, we all get a bit perturb with new posters becasue we know if some rudimentary research was done on their part before they leaped into rooting and romming and all that, 90% of the problems would cease. I have taken dozens of PMs from people who were lost and I kept sending them to links that I was able to find in minutes of searching either the XDA forums or elsewhere. We do have the right to get a bit frustrated when we see post after post of why can't I do this or why can't I do that.

I've certainly done some stupid things and asked some obvious questions when I 1st hopped on xda. But I'd like to think I've settled in ok. Seems to me though this is just how it's going to be huh? You two know far more than I do and even I'm hopping on the q&a side and trying to help people like you do.
It would be nice to have stickys regarding all the really easy things like. ... No custom recovery for any Verizon S4 unless you're on MDK. Sadly I know many people won't read that either. Not 100% on exactly what it takes to create a sticky, obviously a mod has to, but that would be a start.
And I know the search function works awesome these days too! I think people get excited and are in a hurry to get flashing away and ask silly questions later when their S4 is stuck at the Verizon splash screen or bootlooping.
