Before the ota I used volume ace for managing my profiles. I'm on call.moat nights and I am able to just have it ring, and everything else is silenced. I have tried quick profiles, toggle profiles, profiles etc. Everyone I am having the same issue. I set a profile and after an incoming call.comes in, the profile goes back to something else and all my notifications are audible again. Frustrating at 3 am when I get an email from sams club and it wakes me up, thinking its a call for work.
So my question, does anyone know of a profile app that I can set specific profiles to have certain things ring and others vibrate or be silent? It was possible with volume ace and gingerbread.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, in ICS, Ringer and Notifications are linked together.
They are unlinked on CyanogenMod9, but not on any Sense ROMs.
The easiest workaround is to set the notification sound to be a silent mp3 file.

Okay, that is completely idiotic. Is that actually in ICS or is it something HTC did?
I hope they fix that.

It was a decision by Google for ics.
That's why we have cm9.

You could set the mail app when to check for mail overnight. Change the off peak times to when you would be sleeping, and have it set to manual to check for messages. During the day from 7 am to 7 pm are my peak times and it's set for push. Off peak is set to manual. I have no need to auto receive emails at night. If I think I'm going to get one I need, you can check manually. This won't work if you use the native gmail app, but you can add your gmail through the HTC mail app.
Just a side note, I use handcent for texting and I've discovered (never knew it before) that you can set individual tones for specific people when they text you. That was one thing I missed from my blackberry. Not anymore

Hey,
So I've heard some pretty good things for Tasker. I like the options available, and the configuration seems very detailed and customizable. I've searched on these forums, but some people say that it caused their phone to freeze, and they had to re-flash their system. I'm not sure if it was because they added some stupid setting, or if Tasker genuinely messed up. Does anyone have any input they can add?
i love tasker. been using it for about a year now. i have set up several different tasks and automations....excellent app
I have no issues with Tasker, though I'm barely scraping its potential. Basically using it with Minimalistic Text to give me weather, missed calls and missed SMS notifications.
used it on my captivate for a year and now my S2 for the past 9 days. been very solid. i do some cool stuff. for example:
1. plug in phone between the hours of 10pm and 7am do the following:
phone says: silent mode on
then it does the following:
silent mode on
system, media, incoming call, notification volume all go to 0
when i unplug or go outside of the time window it says silent mode off and reverts back to my original volumes.
2. location based sound settings
when i leave my house it turns wifi off and all sounds up. when i get to work it turns wifi on and all my volumes to half so i dont blast people while in a meeting.
3. paging
at work we use sms as a pager. when u send something to ur att txt email address it comes through as 410 something something. so whenever i see a 410 number, it turns all volumes up, plays and repeats a sound 3 times, then puts the phone back in the state it was. i.e. if at night silent (see item 1) and if during the day whatever location based profile i was in.
basically, tasker is bad ass. it has a big learning curve. i am a programmer so conditional based logic comes more natural.
Very stable here.First time using it, there is definitely a learning curve but out it's quite logical and obviously powerful.
Used it on my Captivate and now on the SGSII, absolutely no problems. I just use it for turning on my Wifi when I'm at home, turning auto-rotate on when I turn on my browser and turning GPS on when I open up maps.
Tasker has been stable on every device I've used it on, including this one. It just may be my best paid app. Expensive (in comparison to other apps) and complex with a learning curve, but the immense functionality and potential make it worth it.
logic ?

Bla Bla, if it all came so natural you should set the phone to silence mode instead of setting all volumes to 0, its more logical.
I have Tasker... but I'm still trying to figure it all out. I'm new to android and to Tasker... I would LOVE to find a tutorial or a list of really useful "tasks" and how to set them up.

I been using it for about a month now. Love it. No problems what so ever. If u need to turn GPS on or off u need to download "secure settings" from the market and integrate it into ur tasks. This app is bad ass. Worth ever penny IMO.

Hi guys:
Since I am quite new to here with less posts, I can not post this question to the development forum yet. But I hope someone can help me on the Rom modifications.
The AT&T Note is my first Android device. I like it and rooted and flshed with the modified Saurom VIIa already. But I just could not find a way to ture off the voice alarm on new email arrival.
In stock rom, I only hear a pin drop sound notification of new emails, which is perfect. However, in the Saurom, I now get a female voice alter "one new email" which is annoying when it is quiet or during a meeting. I search almost everywhere on my note and just could not find a way to turn it off. Did I miss anything or is this a "built-in" feature for the Saurom?
Again, I am sorry to post the question here, since I could not potst in the development forum yet. Thanks a lot for your help!

I had the same problem if you're talking about a sound notification of a new email, only mine was set to a loud and irritating siren noise.
You have to open up the email app and go to menu -> settings and there is a notification section where you can disable or change the tone.

Thanks for the reply. But I was talking talking about "sound" notice, which is fine and can be turn off. I was talking about the "voice" notification, which tells you (in a female voice) "one new email". I can't turn the lady off. Not sure where and how to get rid of it

Where is driving mode? I could not find it in settings......
Sorry this is my first Android device, and not very familiar with the settings yet......
Do these steps:
Settings
Voice input and output
Text to speech settings
Uncheck driving mode
That should take care of it!

Hi everyone, I'm currently unlocked and running the latest CM9 by jokersax. I usually set my phone to silent overnight, but I need to find a way to have a certain number always ring, regardless of the silent setting. I've tried a few market apps like SemiSilent and Selective Silence but they don't work. I don't know if it's the phone or ICS causing them not to work. Does anyone know of a way I can accomplish this? Thanks!

I use Tasker, but it's got a hell of a learning curve. However, you can set it up so if a call comes through from a specific contact it will temporarily turn the ringer volume up, then turn it back down. If you're genuinely interested, I can help you out setting up a Tasker profile to do that. Otherwise, not sure what else does what you want.

Night ringer... its in the app store works great you can set up to 5 different contacts and it will also let those contacts texts to you come thru also if you want.
Please try Automateit
Try AutomateIt available on google play and customize it as per your requirement.
Select a silent ringtone as default then just edit the contact you want to ring loud with another ringtone, done.
Hello.
I'm using a German version of the Galaxy S3 with stock 4.1.1 ROM.
I own it since few days, coming from iPhones and I'm still learning how to use it.
One very useful thing I've found is the blocking mode. I use it at night to stop notifications sound and to permit only my family calls to go through.
Whatsapp notifications, though, are still coming through and I'm forced to manually reduce the notifications volume to zero.
Is it a bug or am I missing something?
I've tried setting the blocking mode with both time range and "always", but no differences at all.
Thanks.
I was woken up this morning by whatsapp messages, so if anyone has an answer it'd be appreciated.
I am having the same problem.. i think the problem is with whatsapp itself it must be a bug as when u go to notification settings the "ringer" whats comes up as default tone not the notification tone.
hope this get resolved quick! i have emailed whatsapp but got standard email template... delete app ... reboot re install ..etc
No one has a solution?
I have the same problem but a month or two before it did worked. I guess that maybe an update of whatsapp has disabled this. It very annoying waking up because of that horrible whatsapp noise.
Update
Just installed JB 4.1.2 and the problem is still there.
So it seems to be a Whatsapp problem, and it's a very stupid management of the notifications.
The notifications should be managed by the system and if the system says "shut up" ALL notifications should comply.
For me this is a point in favor of iOS.
P.S.: not a fan boy of course. I own both devices and it's normal I compare them.
WhatsApp uses a different method to sounf notificiations, this is why it can sound notifications even playing music (other apps would mute/pause the music for the notification)
I guess someonr could patch WhatsApp, my smali knowledge isn't that good to do it myself.

I understand, but if Google implements a kind of "do not disturb" mode it should know that some apps can use music as notification sound and block that too...
Problem lies with whatsapp. I did mail them about it, no response :/ m forced to put my phone on silent always :/

[SOLUTION] Blocking Mode WhatsApp Sounds
First of all, I do know that this is a fairly old thread, HOWEVER, it is still the first result on google for "blocking mode whatsapp", so i figure this is where people look. So i hope you will forgive me.
I have found a solution to the very annoying problem which many people seem to suffer from.
I have found a way to include the whatsapp sounds under the android blocking mode.
You will need the LightFlow app, (which i believe is a must have app for the S3 anyways (OP said he uses a s3)).
after you got light flow:
1: In What's app:
- disable notification sounds for incoming messages(not in light flow, in whats app). set it to silent or disable at all
2: The go to light flow and:
- enable sound notifications for whats app
- set what ever notification sound you would like to have for whats app when blocking mode is NOT enabled
- under Sounds-->Volume control method-->tick "Android standard notification volume"
Now it you enable blocking mode, it also blocks what's app sounds and if blocking mode is disabled, everything is normal.
hope that helps....took me quite a while to figure it out.
edit: oh and i do not have any affiliation with the light flow app or their developers!!! i just used it for changing lights and came across the sound feature by chance!!!
its a shame. other blockers block it, why can't the native JB also do it?
furstrating. didn't want to install another software on the phone when the block mode works so well, except for whatsapp of course.
Does this exist with 4.2.2 as well?

Yeah, I've got a Nexus 4 on 4.2.2 and the issue is on that as well. It's a problem with the way whatsapp handles notifications, not the Android firmware version.
Thanks Tyler D for the solution, will be testing this later today.
I am experiencing the very same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running 4.2.2.
Do you have any news? I tried to email whatsapp support a few days ago but I am still waiting their reply.

Hello, after a full day of googling, messing my device up, and headaches - here I am.
Before I go any further it would probably help to explain my device configuration. I have a galaxy player, which has no mobile data or cellular capabilities (essentially a phoneless galaxy S), running unnoficial cm9 ICS. Because cm9 hasn't been optimized for media players, I still have the phone features such as the dialer built-in.
My goal is to get google voice working with the sip feature on the cm9 dialer. Through the help of pbxes.org and trial and error, I have mostly succeeded. The one minuscule yet painfully crippling issue I have is the ringtone doesn't play when I receive a call, even though it vibrates and shows the call screen normally. Now before you ask the painfully obvious; YES I tried setting a new ringtone, NO my device isn't in silent mode, and YES my volume is turned up.
I haven't tried a data reset yet, but that is last resort as I have no way to nandroid. I was wondering if this is a bug with cm9 or ICS in general, or a device specific issue I have. I would be so thankful if anyone that has experienced this and possibly found the solution could share it! Thank You.
I'll take silence as a sign no one else has this issue?

I have looked at other dialers but none of them have the sip capabilities. I also tried some sip clients like sipdroid - which rang fine, although interestingly simplecsp fails to ring just like the stock dialer. I am thinking it is a bug with our cm9 since system ui sounds also seem to not play.

There is no settings with in settings that allows you to put the ringtone so you might have to do it the way I did it. The way was is you have to download zedge and find the ringtone you want and then download it and then it hit set as and it will ask you what you want to set it as and set it as your ringtone and it'll work

Hmm, I have no problem setting ringtone.
I have made several important discoveries;
The reason the system UI sounds don't work is because the system volume is set to 0 and can't be adjusted in the system settings, but I used AudioManager to turn it up. Now system UI sounds work fine but still no ringtone.
Another discovery is when I set poweramp to not pause for incoming calls, I hear the ringtone! It plays over poweramp, but this is a huge clue to my problem.
