[Q] Expected battery life on CM9? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are loads of battery threads(almost too many to get any useful info out of!) but I just wanted to check that there is not actually something wrong with my Galaxy S2 in regards to battery life so can someone please let me know what the expected battery life is when running the following:
CM9.1 Stable
CM9 stock Kernel
BVP7 modem
I have the following apps installed along with the standard gapps:
Facebook
Flipboard
BBS
CPU Spy
Flipboard
Whatsapp
Chrome
Titanium Backup
Dropbox
IMDB
Swiftkey 3
Viber
Twitter
Superuser
I have also tried the last 3 Siyah Kernels and pretty much the same battery life of about 14 hours max with between 2-3 hours of Screen on time before the battery dies to 0%!
In BBS there is about a 20% Kernel Wakelock constantly and about 8% Partial wakelock resulting in CPU Spy showing the phone never gets into more then about 82% deep sleep!
So simple question, what type of battery life are others getting with similar setups as I am starting to wonder if my S2 is actually faulty only getting 14 hours?
Thanks to all that take the time to reply...

I get 2,300 hours only of battery backup with those settings.
Actually, what's the meaning of this thread?

I think that's the average battery life with CM9, but we can't really tell cause we all have different types of usage
Did you let the kernel/rom settle so you could get the best out of it?

S2 i9100 cm9 9.1.0 stock kernel xxlpw

With use of the phone low brightness using apps 14 hours
Low brightness and heavy use of the phone 5 hours

I see some people posting saying they can get 5 hours of screen on time and 2 days from the battery but mine would never be able to get that so is my phone faulty?

NO. Your phone is not faulty.
We all use our phones differently, we have different configurations etc.

You're expecting people to have the same apps and use the device the same way as you.. and then on top of that, find this thread and tell you how long their battery lasted??
I think that is VERY unlikely. Plus, there are already soo many battery threads, you just have to search for them. Good Luck.

Last I used, fb was a battery hogger. What about wake locks? Any major partial and/or kernel wake locks? The stock CM9 kernel is not so customizable, check out fluxii kernel or siyah..... 4-5 hours of screen time is possible, I'll link you to a thread that will help you save battery.
Edit: here is a thread from which I was surprised that my battery could do what I thought it couldn't.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21851909 I followed the CM9 + siyah magic configuration.

Lots of apps that need sync don't help... betterbatterystats will also tell you if any apps are misbehaving.
Also checking the voltage of your battery to see of its faulty may prove rewarding.

I have tried the latest Siyah(with the config in the thread!) and Fluxii kernels now as well and still no where near 4-5 hours screen time!
The most I can get it about 2-3 hours screen time and about 14 hours of total battery time!
Right now after a full charge I seem to have lost 31% in 4 1/2 hours with 35 mins of Screen on time!
BBS is not really helping as it is saying i have 3% kernel wakelocks and 2% partial wakelocks but I cant seem to do anything about them after reading BBS threads for days!
I cant really believe that you have to do all this just so your phone can run for maybe 18 hours without going flat as coming from an iPhone4 I was able to get 2 days out of my phone before i needed charging so very disappointed in the S2 battery life.

[Q] Battery optimization?

How can I make my battery last longer? I am using set cpu and various profiles to give me the best optimization I can, however my phone barely makes it 10 hours with light use *1hr web browsing, avid txting, light music listening via music on phone ~ 1 hr as well.* I'm not faulting the phone. I just want to know what can be done to get the most out of the stock battery as I see people getting results twice as good as mine and just done get what I'm doing wrong here.
Thanks for the help in advanced.
I have the exact same problem as you. Are you using unnamed with Enthropy's experience kernal as well? I'm about to flash cm7 to see if I can get better results.

I used cm7 for a while now using UnNamed and cm gave marginally better battey life but
Just use the dang phone . You dont need to do anything special for great battery life. Try a factory reset if theres a problem though. Im rooted on cog beta 4 getting amazing battery life. I talked my mom imto getting this phone over the new iphone and hers is completely stock and she knows nothing and doesnt close any apps and gets the same amazing battery life as i do.
Reset and use it. If you cant get through a day of heavy use the phone is defective.

+1....or you have wakelocks. Find BetterBatteryStats and CPUSpy. BetterBatteryStats will tell you if something is preventing the device from going into deep sleep. I like to use "wakelocks since unplugged." CPUSpy will tell you the amount of time your device spends in each frequency, including deep sleep. For this, you'll need to reset the timers each time you unplug the phone.
Its add easy as flashing cm.... I went 15 hours and still had 60% left. with OC. Nothing else special (aka no juice defender our set CPU). The only trick is deleting everything in the dcim folder (known medias bug ) you'll see 1% battery loss per hour, with fb and GV sync

BBS sometimes misses wakelocks, for even more info, grab the contents of /proc/wakelocks and post them here.
my solution: keep a charger with you anywhere you go
I have a car charger, home charger and work charger (as do most people)
Thanks for all the replies. I'm sure there's go to be a work around for this
Not sure about a workaround. From everything I've seen, the max battery life is around six hours when the screen is on. Basically, if your screen has been on for 4-5 hours, it's time for a recharge.

Well based on all I've read it seems like the battery is a mixed bag depending on the OC profiles, roms and kernels being used with the device.
Is it true that setting a screen off profile in set cpu will cause the device to not be able to enter a deep sleep mode and thus will kill the battery faster?

Not true. It is true, however, that on stock kernels and ones without the "sleep of death" fix, setting a screen off profile with a clock limit lower than 800 MHz can cause "sleep of death" issues. Right now I think only my kernel and the Cyanogenmod kernel have the SoD fix.

Thanks for clearing that up
I'll post here as I don't have enough posts for the development forum yet.
I'm running Entropy's 16th exp kernal, and Cog4 and I noticed my battery draining far too fast, CPUSpy then showed that the phone simply isn't entering deep sleep. I had previously been undervolting with Voltage Control but I uninstalled the program just to be safe, still not deep sleeping. I also uninstalled Widgetlocker, and I don't think I have any apps that would cause infinite wakelock. What are some possible causes of this issue? Just so I have an idea where I should be changing things.
UPDATE: Reflashing the kernal fixed the problem for a while but then I reinstalled voltage control and now I seem to have it again. Uninstalling and reflashing again however, did not fix the problem. I am utterly confused
On another subject, has anyone actually noticed better battery life after undervolting?
Freaking SWEET! My battery lasted 33 hours and 13 minutes! I've only owned the phone for 3 days now and this is off of teh very 1st FULL charge! Usage was between light & moderate. Data sync on, Wifi On, GPS OFF, BT OFF, FB Data Sync OFF, Capacitative buttons set to light up only in the dark & NO haptic touchback...mmm, can't remember what else I tweaked at the moment but I think that's fantastic battery life! I'm upgrading from a G1 that couldn't last more than 17 hours when it was on standby ONLY with maybe 2 phonecalls and less than 20 text messages. I usually only averaged 6-8 hours and with SIMILAR usage in the last couple of days, I've been able to get 33+ HOURS? ^_^ <-- I'm very, very happy so far! This is on a stock root - NO custom ROM for me at the moment...I'm actually digging TouchWiz 4.0 which I thought I was going to hate when I played with the previous version of TW on the T-Mo Vibrant. (yes, my G1 was running CM 7.1 and battery life still sucked and I went through 2 different aftermarket batteries w/o any luck!)
Don't know what the voodoo in the programming is with this bad boy, but I think Sammy did a nice job this time!
The best thing you can do is having "Autostart" to prevent App to start automatically. I saved 25-30% on my SGS 1 and the same on my SGS 2 (i777). My son on the I9000 SGS 2 saved also 30%.

Check for wakelocks in BetterBatteryStats, and if that doesn't find anything, do the following in an Android Terminal Emulator shell:
Code:
cat /proc/wakelocks > /sdcard/wakelocks.txt
or better, using ADB (Google it and if you're on Windows, Droid Explorer)
Code:
adb shell cat /proc/wakelocks > wakelocks.txt
Then post wakelocks.txt here
All the apps, camera n everything works on that rom? ??? I installed cm7 bt now stock it cuz some apps and camera app didn't work.

[Q] So, is this typical battery life?

Stock battery
I have done everything from Autostarts to managing my processes constantly. I played hanging with friends, got on here, and texted.
I posted an updated battery usage. I have lowest brightness, lowest image brightness, 15s timeout, etc.
i would probably switch to conservative governor vs powersave
This isn't typical battery life
I'd advice you to use better battery stats and cpu spy to se what's causing your battery to drain so quickly
Sometimes I notice "back up" in bbs, and this casus my phone to drain within a day
Hanging with friends does consume a lot of battery, but I play it too, and this does not cause that much drainage..
I have ICScrewed and with a heavy usage, my phone usually last for 1.5 ~ 2 days
With moderate call/text and idle, it lasts for 4 days.

Dang that is high! Are you sure about that? :O At medium usage /w unnamed i only get about 18 hours total. It was similar with ICScrewed too
Holy crap. I'll look into better apps. Could UnNamed be the culprit? Or the kernel?
Should I buy a new battery? The life waslike this for the few days I was stock, I think
I average around 17hr, on a good day I'll get 20h. I also recommend better battery stats, great app to see what's keeping your device from going to deep sleep.
Another great app is lbe privacy guard, you can deny certain apps and games some of the permissions they want (disabling GPS on those that really don't need it etc).
I'm on unnamed so that isn't the issue. Might be the kernel, just check the kernel wake clock in better battery stats to check. I'm on entropy's latest dd, while i do feel i got better battery life on the kernel with the latest unnamed ROM I'm not to sure if it's the kernel or something else.

I'd be curious to see your graph. My battery is dead now, but tomorrow I'm going to get on and upload Better Battery Stats to my phone. I would've paid for it on the Market, but I couldn't find it when I searched. I'm curious to see what other people think. I switched all Powersaves to Conservative. Is OnDemand bad for my CPU as it constantly trips from 500MHz to 1.2GHz? Should I consider going to 1GHz?

I agree. This is my latest battery cycle of what I consider "moderate" use
What I'd consider light usage (about 10 minutes of voice, between 5-10 minutes of cellular data, 10-15 texts, and about 20 minutes of total screen-on time) I get about 35 hours.
I have managed to almost completely drain my battery in about 4 hours though... Thanks Game Dev Story!

That is a significant amount.
Also, use cpuspy to see how hard it's been working.

Oh crap! I didn't see them until you brought it to my attention. That explains some of the idle drain. I'll look into CPU Spy. You guys have been so helpful!
Your kernel wakelocks had no data, probably due to BBS being a fresh install. A full charge should set a proper reference point.

If something's holding that many log wakelocks, something might be spamming a log somewhere.
I can't find anything to help with those two either. Or would seem that the keyguard might have something to do with text messages, but I can't see anything that would spam the log. Where might I be able to read this log?
Also, I'll post my CPU spy stats toward the end of the night. It's looking like it spends most of its time at 500MHz.

Better Battery Life
In stock gingerbread I usually got 1 1/2 day of life with 2-3 hours of screen on. With CheckROM v6 I got around 2 days with 4 hours of screen on. Now with ICS and CF-root I got with the first full charge 1 1/2 day with 5:30 hours of screen on!
I froze all the junk that comes with the ROM, I only have a partial wakelock AudioOut_1 that is driving crazy. So far I'm quite happy with it.
Please search the forum we have so many Battery ICS threads already!

I'm not having any real battery issues myself, but since quite a few people report it I decided to call Samsung and ask if they will provide a rollback to 2.3.5 or what they could do to alleviate the issue.
And the answer was, as a technician had told, to solve the battery issue I should do the following:
1.) Charge the mobile to 100%
2.) Let the device drain battery as "normal" until around 9%
3.) Then open applications that drain battery fast until the phone shuts off
4.) With the phone in off-mode and drained recharge it to 100%, and do not turn on the phone at all during this time
5.) Turn on phone, and the battery life should be back to normal
Seriously, this was the official answer I got from Samsung support technician. Sounds like some old woman's advice, but hey if anyone with battery issue want to try then why not. At any rate it can't hurt

Wifi and 3g on for 1 minute off 15 when screen off. Always on when screen unlocked. Using Green power free. dormancy at 70%. After 12 hrs battery at 40% with moderate use. Screen on about 4 hrs. with 2 hrs of music battery down about 5%. I'd say its best I've had in 5 months.

I'm actually pleased with how far this stock ics could stand, i got more than 4 hours screen on display... with 40% battery remaining...on wifi for couple hours,..well, to early to conclude...
Phone Stays awake uselessly
Using SLIM ROM 2.8 after switching from HyperDroid v6...the battery seems good..but the Android OS and Mediaserver thing is keeping the phone awake uselessly for a very long time..the 1st cycle running, 16+hours, 1hr 30mins of display..and the phone is staying awake for like 4hrs 30mins+ ..hope to get this solved..will post back after 2-3cycles!

Isn't the whole "battery calibration" thing just an hoax? Been reading some lines around that disprove any effectiveness in doing so.

Battery discharging very fast.

Hi. I have my s2 with 2000 mAh Samsung battery, and on official firmware, and the battery is discharging very fast: 62% in 6h and 23 minutes on normal use. On F1 GalaxyNexus rom i have about 70% after 8 hours of normal use. There is a sollution to fix this huge drain?
Checking it simply, it can be guessed that your phone isnt going into deep sleep at all. Install betterbatterystats found free in xda and see whats causing the wake lock.

A bit of basic arithmetic tells me you've had a bit over 2 hrs of screen on time (that's a rough calculation), and you've used a bit more than a 3rd of battery capacity, so that indicates (again roughly) you'd expect to get ~6 hrs of screen on time.
What's the problem
Nothing wrong here if you didn't use a charger than 6 hours with 60% left means 12 hours easy.
I agree with the guy in the above post, Facebook potentially is the main culprit. Give it about 3 battery cycles? What kernel are you using?
Facebook is fine, he is using it that much, so are the calls. heck if I get that kinda battery while mostly idle I'll be happy.

For me this is normal or probably we have some issues before...LOL...
Right now, I use F1 GalaxyNexus ROM...I can describe it for one word "AWESOME"!
Get better battery stats from xda and cpu spy from play store. Bbs will see if you have any rogue app that's draining battery and cpu spy will see if your phone is deep sleeping

AOKP, ICS Battery life issues..

I've been using the latest gingerbread builds and I'm having great battery life, But I notice when I use AOKP or any kind of ICS rom my battery life isnt so great..
Is there a specific kernel you people are using? and What kernel settings are working the best for you?
Thanks!

Good news that you are not alone. Based on my premature calculation, only 10 out of 100 (that's 10% ) ICS ROM users have good - great battery life, meaning the rest is having worse. Mine is falling into that group. I never have great battery, only so-so and below average.
Also as Nick has mentioned, asking for which best is a NO NO here.
One might be good for me, doesn't mean it will be good for you and vice versa.
Try them all and pick one that best suite for you.
My 2 cents......I know you have read this several times - but battery life is really dependent on a lot of factors - your AT&T signal, rogue apps, data sync frequency, CPU governor etc. etc.
read Entropy's excelled thread on battery drain on this forum.
i tried out a few GB roms over the last few weeks and really did not notice any battery improvement over ICS.
Currently running cMIUI with xxkernel and it is really working out great as in the battery easily lasts for the whole day.
I remember when I was on stock GB I could go upto 2 days on single charge - but that may be due to the battery being brand new. I have read that the battery in SGS2 really degrades fast
I have 2% drain per hour when doing absolutely nothing, screen off, wifi off, gps off during 8 hours overnite.
While someone has reported having only 2% or 3% drain over 8 hours overnite.

Have you tried using "Better Batter Stats" to see what is causing the drain?
I have been using AOKP since Task brought it to us and I average 1% every two hours over nite.
Do you use the Facebook app? That sucker is hungry for your juice.

I got BBS v1.7 for a while, that was absolutely no help.
I installed BBS 1.8 for about a week. Based on their info, I got the "multipdp" along with some other things (such wake-lock) cranked up big time.
I read the Entropy thread, not much help.
Note: Wifi is off.
Maybe 3G/H+ keep toggling for sync process?
I do use facebook! haha. and I havent used better battery stats

I'd also recommend using CPU Spy in conjunction with Better Battery Stats to see if the phone is able to enter deep sleep.
I don't get as good as you. . .I average about 1% or less per hour overnight. But that's with wifi on, periodic syncing of 7 accounts, scheduled backups and cache cleaning going on.

My understanding is multipdp will show when apps are waking the radio to use cell data - each wake instance results in a minimum of 6 seconds of wakelock. Switching to wifi when you are idle "should" eliminate this wakelock.
I could be wrong here...dig into the known battery drainers thread from around the time the first ICS roms were being tried on the i777. There was some discussion of it...it is a renamed version of some other wakelock in GB.

That's what I said, "maybe 3G/H+ toggling".
I believed that if I left wifi on overnite, do nothing, I still had 2% drain per hour.
Let me completely turn off data tonite and see how thing goes.
errrrr I have a huge problem with my battery. I've been testing various ICS roms and kernels(aokp, foxhound, serendipidity, fluxxi Kernel, siyah 3.4.3.,Neak) and all of them with the exception of serendipity w/siyah kernel, drain my battery real fast.
Not really sure what the problem is but when I look at what's been using the battery its most of the time either screen (which is understandable) and android os? I went to bed last night leaving my phone at 100% and woke up to find it at 52%. When I looked at what was using the battery it displayed, 93% android os and only 3% cell standby??(btw Foxhound ICS, Siyah Kernel) Maybe I have to many things updating/syncing?
When I first got my phone, 2-3% battery drain overnight was one of the things that amazed me about stock gingerbread on the i777.
I've flashed alot of roms since then, and so far, no ROM can even touch that stat.
