SGS3 - screen-finger friction; plastic clicks? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys.
Got mine SGS3 as a present 2 weeks ago. At first I didn't notice this, but now it makes me wonder... Btw this is mine first touch screen and Android phone.
1. Friction between finger and screen oscilates. In one moment, it is super smooth, but in other there is some additional friction with different intensity. The screen is still usable, of course, but this issue is quite irritating. What is even worse, I just can't see any pattern in these screen changes. Even when I clean the screen with microfiber, wash and dry my hands, problem is still present sometimes.
2. Back cover. I noticed on 2 spots that plastics clicks everytime I touch it. Everything seems perfectly fit, except on those 2 tiny spots, although it is not noticable when you just look at it, just when you press it - it clicks. One spot is right besides camera flash and other above USB/charge cable slot. It doesn't bother me that much, I'm more interested if there are other people with similar issue.
I don't have receipt and the phone is bought in another country. Therefore, it is quite a problem for me to return it and ask for replacement. On the other hand, since it is quite expensive toy, it would be ridicilous not to claim it, unless this is "normal" (?!). I want to hear what you think and about your experience, just in case I'm doing something wrong and/or missing something obvious.
Thank you.

Bump.
1. It seems that I'm an idiot and those increased friction between my fingers and screen is caused by my sweaty hands/fingers. It is pretty humid and hot these days, so it's understandable. How can I solve this? What do you think - can screen protector help in my case?
2. Remains. Does your sgs3 plastics clicks time from time or it is perfectly fitted?
Thank you.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

1) Put anti-fingerprint screen protector. You will have a bit blurry screen but should solved your issue.
2) Put a case on it and you are good to go
Else, get an exchange....
Enjoy

Thank you very much, Arsaw!
Do you or other sgs3 users have some recommendations for screen protector and case? Some specific model?

[Q] Issue: light seeping through touch button

Hi guys
On my SGS2 when the touch buttons are lite part of the light seeps through the gap of the hard button. Does anyone else have this?
I can only see it when it's pretty dark but its very annoying.
I don't have this :s
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, I have it too, but it's not too bad and only visible from certain angles and in a dark room.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Yeah I sometimes have itbut almost rarely, and like the other guy said only from certain angles when I'm looking for it. I put pressure on the button in that direction and it disappears usually

Ive got this very slightly on the right hand side. I also notice when im reading a web page with a black background the very bottom left has a white spot/pixel, it goes away when you start scrolling. Anyone else got the same problem?

Glad im not the only one who has this. Worth returning over?

Personally It doesn't bother me, its hard to notice and even when I can see it, its really tiny. So to me not a problem

Im guessing you have Optus stock as well?
When you look at the touch button straight on can you see the light?
Mine has the same issue but i dont care.
I can only see it when I'm using the phone when it's completely dark
My wife has a mole but shes still beautiful, can we not get a little obsessed with perfection with our phones? It is after all the slimmest, lightest, dual core power house smart phone out there....forgive its quirks?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
My phone did this at first but it went away after a couple weeks as the home button got better seated through use. Definitely not worth returning over.
same here, right hand side!
this was the reason for me to switch off the button lights in settings. looks better anyway
It has to be pretty dark...
didnt realise you could turn the light off

send it back, complain to samsung, demand they redesign the handset!
erm...
This will make it heavier and bulkier!!!
Happens to mine and there is NO PROBLEM with it. Be happy!

And more expensive. All these perfectly good handsets getting returned for new ones have to be paid for somehow.
I switched mine off looks so much better, per sonly I wish it was all black like the nexus s, i think that looks so sexy
Have it too, but dont matter !! I am a perfectionist too ( 620 euros it is for a phone !! ) but i think... i mean ... returning it for this????
If it is same as anyone elses in here its BARELY visible and you should try to find it again.. enjoy your phone. ( there are great chances of getting a same unit back, cause its a design thing i think )
Hey,
have it as well. But I don't really mind.

thanks for warning but I removed it same minute I bought it, touch is more responsive now, and colors are a bit vivid, and no problems at all. Just be careful with your phone and nothing happens : ))
I have no screen protector and my screen works perfectly.
Just saying.
Edit:
Wait. By looking VERY closely at the edges of the glass, I notice there seems to be a small gap, and it looks there is some sort of layer on top of the glass. Is that a screen protector or is it part of the screen? It doesn't look like it can be removed actually.

There is a protector installed on the screen at the factory.
I removed mine and it still works perfectly if not better.

this isn't a problem by removing the screen protector
it can be everything except that
why not:
screen protector has almost nothing to do with touch (it decrease the touch sensivity) that's all
what can be the problem
phone became wet
phone became hot
hardware fault
and more except screen protector
Maybe there is some glue residue left from removing the protector making it less sensitive in different parts of the screen?
Screen only works when there's something between my finger and the screen!!!

I don't understand why people try to remove it, if it is preinstalled.
I always keep those on, until it become messy, then put the third party on, i just don't like leave the screen naked

Sadly I dropped my phone today and damaged the factory fitted protector (at least it was doing it's job!), peeled it off without issue and replaced it successfully!
The Terrapin replacement isn't quite as good but hopefully it'll do the job, and thankfully I didn't damage the screen whe I dropped it.
As I said it before, I don't think that Sony will bother to add that pre-installed screen protector and add cost if it is "useless"... but ofcourse, the choice is with us i.e. if want to take risk of removing it or listen to them...

Has anyone noticed the notification light on the back or the phone?

Wow, big surprise to me. I was sort of annoyed at the small size of the notification light on the side of the screen, but I just realized that they put one on the back of the phone, and its much larger. Cool!
Yep

It was one of the new main features of the phone besides the screen and internals
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
Yep. Most of the time I'm using the phone for voice chat (phone call or VOIP usually), the phone is face down. It automatically switches to speaker when the phone is face down so all you need to do is either hit call or hit answer and place the phone on your coffee table while you work. Very convenient feature and you don't have to worry about missing notifications while it's face down because of the rear notification light. This also applies when you leave the room for a bit and return. I personally love the feature but from what I've heard, other people consider it a nuisance. To each his own I suppose.
I haven't really noticed it, seems kinda useless.

[Q] I'm irked by this, and don't understand it.... (screen responsiveness and heat)

So, most of us have had our OGs go a little crazy responsiveness wise while plugged in and I've figured out that it's from the heat from our phones... Whyyyyy in the heck does the heat from the battery cause random presses on my phone? That's so dumb.... But, I know it's the source now because now that i've dropped my phone and have to get it replaced it has been getting super hot, and the spots where it gets hot will actually press buttons on its own. It's pretty weird because i can't use those parts of the screen anymore, it just won't respond to touch anymore but when the phone starts getting warm it'll do all sorts of stuff on it's own. Do you think it has to do with LG's "zero-gap" screen?
Yes.
The screen is super sensitive. It may be the biggest issue sadly.

Unfortunately, today, after no heating issues, my phone has developed a thin horizontal strip of screen that does not respond to touch. The issue seems to have materialized out of nowhere. No drops, no heat.
The strip is about an inch up from the bottom of the phone.
Luckily, the strip is thin and does not adversely affect my user experience enough to be a hindrance. Although, the fact in itself is bothersome. Hopefully, this will not spread out more throughout the rest of the phone.
FWIW, the strip is right across the Google search widget.

That sounds like the issue I have although mine only occurs on the home screen. I can't press any of the bottom icons unless I move higher. It works fine everywhere else.

This phone definitely has some quirks to it, but it really is the best phone i've ever had. It's the smoothest and fastest i've ever had, if it does start to bother you or gets worse, i'd take it to AT&T and just get a new one, not like you did something to make it happen so why not take a replacement?

I agree wholeheartedly.
I'm not with AT&T so I got my phone on ebay. I've read that LG will fix it with a proof of purchase, though. Gotta search the threads and possibly contact LG. As of right now it's not a major problem.

My issue isn't affected by charging, though. I'm charging now and no issues other than that one strip. And that is there regardless if it's plugged in or not. That's also the only area affected. No lag, stutter, slowness.

Yeah, that is a common issue with all Android devices. I've read that it is a voltage issue with the USB cable, charger or outlet. If it's happening, try a different cable or outlet. That usually solves my issue. I had the same issue on my SGS3, my old HTC Inspire, and my wife's Pantech Burst... But it was by far the worst on my Motorola Photon. Random touches would happen while the phone was plugged in and it became unusable while charging.

My OG doesn't get hot at all, at least it hasn't happened yet. But I do get occasional scrolling issue, it would go from scrolling the entire page buttery smooth to crawling 2-3 lines at a time, and instead of scrolling the page, it'd open the app where my finger started to scroll. Turn the screen on/off usually fix the problem, but it gets annoying after awhile. I thought it was quick memo causing it, that was the first time I noticed it but then it started to happen randomly when the phone is on charge, I don't think I've seen it happen on battery though. So maybe it is related to charge/voltage issue.

Mine by no means got hot, until it was broken, but it did get a little warm just like any handheld device does after some use. Seriously though, if Sprint did get an update to fix it, then i think AT&T needs to step their game up..

[Q] Trouble with the home button?

Picked my One up today to replace my freshly broken Nexus 4. So far so good, but this home "button" registers about one out of five presses. Anyone else seeing this behavior? The back button works fine every time.

I have no screen protector and my home button doesn't register often either. Also when trying to touch places in the standard browser it doesn't register immediately. Starting to think there's a defect in screen or software.

I'm having the sane issues it does it with the back button as well. Did it before I put the screen protector on it. It doesn't help that they sit so close to the screen. When I start tapping frantically trying to make it work I end up pressing whatever is right above it on the screen. Thinking about returning it to try another but if it's a common problem I don't want to waste my time. It's not too bad usually at least one of the two buttons will register if the other one won't

I had the same issue on my device. It took three swaps to figure out it wasn't the phone but, the Zagg HD screen protector I had on it. Once I took it off, everything started behaving as intended,
I noticed last night that my Zagg screen protector still had some water bubbles (very tiny ones) near the home button. So today after another night the bubbles are gone and the home button works well enough I can assign a double tap short cut.
Never had any issues with the back button, just for reference.

I'm almost 100% sure it has to do with the screen protector.
I was using an Otterbox Defender case which has the screen protector with the soft keys uncovered. I was using the phone without a hitch. But this morning I decided to use a different screen protector other than the one provided by Otterbox and that screen protector covers the soft keys.
Now I'm having issues with the sensitivity of the soft keys.
Somehow covering the soft keys with the screen protector affects the sensitivity level of the soft keys. I'm thinking of uncovering the soft keys just to finally confirmed that, that is the problem.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Same problem on Sprint variant. I went to the store and the display model also had same problem. Neither had a screen protector.
This is either a widespread hardware defect or a widespread software problem.
Some have said the latest update to the Taiwan variant fixed it.
RE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245637
I have had the issue as well and I believe it's software, rather than hardware. If my back button freezes and I turn the screen off and then back on, it works fine. It only seems to do it when I "overload" the back button in an app that needs it a lot, like this one.
