I have the Aug 27th build of AOKP Jelly Bean from this thread installed on my Fascinate. I know that nightlies come out with new versions quite often, but I don't understand how I'm supposed to update my ROMs that quickly. I wouldn't want to re-download all my applications and reconfigure my homescreens every couple of nights - do you not wipe data between nightlies and just wipe cache and dalvik?
You can do a "dirty" flash (wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, do NOT wipe data, and for good measure, run fix permissions) of the new nightly on top of the existing. This will keep all your apps and settings. Just note: if problems develop, you may need to do a full wipe and install. YMMV. I've had no issues from Build 1 through 9/3/12.

Thanks! Is running fix permissions something I do while in recovery mode or after I've booted up the new nightly?

He told me right after flashing. So I'm assuming before booting. Soon as the MMS is fixed I'm going the nightly route as well.

i fixed permissions after installing the rom, but before booting.
one thing to note - you may have to flash the google apps package as well. i noticed all my contacts were gone which kind of bugged me out. but then i realized it was because my gmail and other google apps were gone. flashed the gapps package and things came back, though i had to set the accounts back up. bit of a pain.
can anyone say if this will happen with each nightly install?

You shouldn't need to wipe /data upgrading to a newer version of MIUI. However, if you run into issues, it's worth trying a full wipe.
yup, just wipe cache & dalvik and flash away.
Cool Thanks
I'd recommend you download 10.28.1 Miui, there is an updated version on the Miui forums that fixes the torch and camera flash issue.
Wifi also didn't work in Andmers 10.28 version for me, but I didn't run kernel cleaner script or do a data wipe before flashing. Others claim wifi worked.
MMS worked in both versions. Speaker phone doesn't work right on either version for me, works until you try and change the volume then quits.
I've updated to the latest CM9 alpha build and I'm getting this error.
"Unfortunately, System UI has stopped"
And this evidently results in me having no notification bar, so no back/home/menu buttons. I'm using Button Savior for now, but how do I fix this? I tried re-updating, wiping cache, wiping dalvik, and none of that fixes it. Help please.
Thanks!
Have you tried wiping data and then flashing?

I was afraid to because I wasn't sure what "wipe data/factory reset" would do. I thought it would maybe take me to stock Nook (yes, I'm that big of a noob), but it seems it treats it as if cm9 were the stock software/ui. I lost all my apps, but I can just reinstall those. I finally have my notification bar back though. Thanks so much for your help!
Np. Its a common belief that you had in regard to wipe data/factory reset (I myself thought this myself when I was new to android). In reality though, it is simply clearing out the user data partition and resetting the rom to its raw form, thus all user apps and data are deleted. This is why apps like titanium backup are useful, so that you can restore your apps and data when swapping roms.
Generally when simply updating a rom, a data wipe is not needed. But if you encounter weird errors such as yours, a data wipe will usually do the trick.
Conversely, you should almost always do a data wipe when going to a different rom (stock to -> cm9 for instance).

If you don't want to do a factory reset, try to replace twLauncher with "Go Launcher" and see if that fix it for you...

Which CM9 alpha build #??
I had tested both CM10 and CM9 on my Nook Tablet device, the CM10 (SGT7 Jelly Bean Rom v0.3 - Linaro) is not stable for daily use. The standby and sleep is good, but running any apps or install apps from Google Play may freeze the device. Experience this for 5-10 per day.
After follow the tread, found that CM9 v0.05.3 is "good" for daily use, then I downgrade to CM9, so far it work pretty good for normal day to day use.
Anyway, the Jelly Bean UI is far more better then ICS.
Hey guys,
I have had some issues with my current ROM. I want to change the ROM. I am looking to switch to OMEGA.
How would I do this, I currently have AROMA rom. Should I do a factory reset the just reboot into recovery mode and install that way? Or will just installing the ROM from zip work? Or if I do a factory reset do I need to root it again with Odin, or will I not need to root it?
Also for wiping the phone should I wipe my SD card? Or no?
Thank you I searched and found half answers for most of this.
You have to format /system partition and /data partition in order to get a clean ROM, otherwise you may run into some unforeseeable problems.
Don't have to wipe sdcard
Most ROM except stock are pre-rooted.

Ok just to double check what your saying.
I should do a wipe using the built in android factory reset.
Then just install the ROM using the recovery boot.
I will not have to use ODIN or any other soft ware. Just factory reset and install rom.
AW: [Q] Switching ROM and wiping
I'd factory reset in recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, format system and then flash the new ROM from your external sdcard
Please report if that way worked for you
But be sure to backup your apps with titanium backup

Nobody can tell you which rom is better .. All roms are amazing because of the work put into them try them out one by one.. you're not going to lose anything..
Ok cool. I installed OMEGA and I like that rom. I did a factory reset and wiped the Dalvik cache and cache. Will look around a bit more but so far so good....
however same issue with the phone. But now when the call ends it says process com.android.phone has stopped. Then i hit ok and phone is ok. It doesn't automatically restart then go really slow.
No idea about this, I searched however couldn't find a answer. Lots of phones and versions of android had this issue.
Any ideas would be great guys.

why not you backup your current rom first then try to flash a new rom without wipe data. if you not facing any issue on the new rom, then it's ok.
if you facing any issue, you must flash again the new rom with wipe all data. if you not happy with both, then you restore back what you are backup before.:fingers-crossed:

Yes I did. I factory reset. wiped cache and dalvik as well as formatting in the advanced options. I currently have Omega 44.2 installed. But I had the iphone app crashing with AROMA 30.1 and 30.4
Is there away to uninstall the phone app and then re install that cleanly?
I did this and still have the phone crashing issue.

There is no white data. only buttons available are force stop and clear data. If I press clear data it says all data will be deleted permanently including all files, settings accounts, databases. I assumed the files were the actual app.
I went to settings. Applciation manager and chose Phone.
......hit clear data then, do that for phone and contacts storage, the data bases get rebuilt the only thing you will have to set up again is which contacts to display and any ringtone options etc you may have chosen

Hello,
First off, I see there is another thread for a similar problem for a different device but unfortunately I was unable to find a solution to my question there, so I am asking here.
When rooting/installing CM10.1 on my tab about a month ago, I installed the Gapps froom goo.im, and for the most part everything works except for Google Now. I lived with it for a while but today, when rooting/flashing CM 10.1 on my brothers tab, I found that there is a gapps version (wingray) that has Google Now working. So I installed that version on my brothers tab, and google now seems to be working fine. So now I would like to get the wingray Gapps on my galaxy tab.
To do this do I have to wipe my tablet and do the whole flashing process again with the wingray version? Or can I just flash the wingray version over the goo.im version?
I just want to make sure so that I don't do anything stupid with my tablet.
Thank you in advance!
You have to wipe system, cache and dalvik first then reflash your ROM and gapps.

No, you must wipe system first, because if you flash over another gapps, there is left overs from the previous gapps.

Probably. I mean if you don't wipe, there maybe some small parts left from the old gapps.

There is dirty flashing, which is flashing the wingray gapps over the existing one. It is dirty because they may not contain exactly the same apps, versions or state. This can cause conflicts which may affect the performance of the apps concerned or even functionality of the tab itself. For this reason it is better to do a clean flash which involves wiping cache, partition, formatting etc which will ensure that the system partition is completely cleared and therefore clean. So my advice is do a clean flash by doing all the wipes, format etc first then flash the ROM followed by the gapps and then wipe cache and dalvik again before rebooting.
Cheers!

Will do, thank you everyone here on your input. Will update after I do the procedure.
UPDATE
So I completely wiped the device, after backing up my app data, and reflashed CM 10.1 along with the wingray gapps. Google Search/Now still don't seem to be working unless I don't update the app. I was under the impression that with the wingray gapps it would work all the time, but at least the google search functionality works if I don't update the app, I can live with that.
Is this just an issue with this device? Or is there a way to get google now to work all the time, even when updating the app?
Update update
I tried to do it again, this time with a different version of gapps that someone pointed to me, claiming that it works completely on his tab. I'm still having the same problem, google now crashes when I try to run it, unless I uninstall its updates.
I am getting a fc in setup wizard after installing the Infamous ROM 4.3 "pac_p4_4.3-Infamous_20131017.zip".
Followed below steps:
1. using CWM 6.0.2.7, wipe data/factory reset
2. wipe cache partition
3. wipe delvik cache
4. Flashed Infamous ROM
5. Flashed gaps "gapps-jb-20130813-signed"
6. Reboot
after getting the fc on setup wizard i tried, 1) wiping cache and rebooting 2) reflashing the infamous rom on top again.
both solutions did not work.
I am coming from Ganbarou 4.3 ROM and before that i had Toldo's v8 ICS rom. Ganbarou ROM was working well.
Just wanted to test different JB 4.3 roms.
can someone help me out?
thanks.

First you need to update your recovery to 6.0.3.6. You can get it from Droidbasement.
Secondly, before flashing you need to format system under Mounts and Storages in addition to the wipes you mentioned above.
After installation wipe cache and dalvik cache again and then reboot.
The gapps is okay as it is same as mine, and I never had any issues.
Cheers.

Great advice...
I also always suggest a system format...
I just wanted to add that with the older recovery...it doesn't like 4.3 gapps. You can boot after ROM flash. Then go back to recovery and flash gapps...wipe cache and dalvik before. And that will work also and I've seen gapps cause some weird issues with this device as well as my e4gt..
Or just use twrp...I've had zero issues with flashing anything since switching...
Thanks for the advice. (John and Gil81)
I followed the steps as advised i.e.
1. under Mount and Storage, format system
2. format cache
3. format data
4. flash rom, this time i flashed CM10.2/SGT7 rom.
5. reboot
everything was working smooth, so moved on to
6. flashing gaps
7. reboot and now
8. Enjoying. (restoring apps)
great work from all the developers of 4.3 roms for our device.
have not upgraded the CWM recovery yet, but please advise if it is absolutely necessary to do that. May be i would do it with any future upgrades.
also to get better understanding of the recovery, what is the difference between format data and format sdcard option?
thanks.

Formatting sdcard will wipe everything in your device including the media partition where your user generated data like pictures, videos, downloads etc and also all the files copied to the device from PC. So be careful NOT to format the sdcard.
Formatting data, on the other hand will remove your installed gapps and the associated data. This is necessary when migrating from an older ROM to a newer one that will need you to install different version of gapps that is suitable for the newer ROM. Even when crossing from one ROM to another based on the same version of android, it becomes necessary to format data to get a clean install so the data from the different ROMs do not conflict.
The recovery version, as I understand it, is necessary for the changes to the filing system of 4.3 which is different from 4.2.2. In addition it is also designed to support the multiuser feature of 4.3. I am a single user so I can't attest to how it helps there.
Cheers.
