Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 vs HP Touchpad(CM9) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
is this a good idea to replace a HP Touchpad running CM9 with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1)?
I ask because I dont understand why Samsung put only a 1GHz dual processor.
Should I get something else ?
Thanks !
PS: The real question is not the money. Its a gift for someone who needs a great display and long battery life. And of course, you can suggest another brand.

Advise on a tablet.
Hey guys, noob here, first post, hey all - pleased to be here
I'm after a little advise, hope you can help. i'm looking for a tablet for my mum for her birthday. I am based in the UK and am looking for a tablet that will run
1. Tescos online shopping and others ASDA etc. i believe its a uk locked app this has caused me some problems on a chinese tablet (an onda vi40) that has now been sent back wouldnt run even after running the build.prop mod
2. Iplayer, 4od etc over wifi. i'll be honest my router is a draytech and its a few years old now and the wifi isnt gr8 on it. iplayr etc run from my samsung s3 fine, xbox live works well too in the livingroom.
3. Browse the web.
not demanding processes i know but thats all she needs it for, video out would be handy if she wants to watch it on our living room tv but that important as long as the rest works.
i am stuck which tablet to get her,its going to be an eBay job, just confused oin what to get. i would lean towards the samsung (because of my phone n how good that is, at the moment) and HP touchpad kinda puts me off because of the bad experiance i have had wiht the onda and because the touchpad wasnt designed to run android. just a little careful after what i have been through witht he onda
thanks in advance
Baz

The omap in the tab 2 while clocked lower is still much faster than the touchpads cpu. Its also very similar to the galaxy nexus which makes it easy to port ROMs to. I have used cm9 on both. Its much smoother on the tab 2 than on the touchpad. Cm10 is also officially supported on the tab 2?

[Q] Samsung tab 10.1 OR Samsung g. Note 10.1?

Hello,
I'm strongly considering getting one of the above, once the second one is available. The fact that the noteay have a stronger processor is a plus.
What should I be looking out for in these devices? What are niggles that would prompt me to check and potentially need to replace if found? Software bugs? Construction quality?
Overall use is going to be internet, everyday calendar, notes etc.
Thanks in advance!

Wait for note. It will probs be lighter and thinner and will defo have a faster processor. Plus it ships with ics. And it has the pen

it is neither lighter nor thinner , but has a faster processor and a pen
If you're price conscious then the original tab is a great buy. Also consider that accessories for the 10.1 Note will be at a premium while a ton of stuff for the original tab are on clearance.
Wait for the note... The pen is surprisingly great (on the note 5.3 anyway), and the faster processor will be a nice upgrade, because the Tegra 2 in the original 10.1 tab isn't great... Very laggy... Yes it's better with cm9, but still not that good.
I have a gt-p7510 Galaxy tab 10.1 and I like it, but if I didn't already have it, I would definitely wait for the note 10.1.
Thanks for the replies guys. Really appreciated.
I too hate the lag and on video reviews of the note I thought it was very slow so good thing they are improving the processor.
I always wondered if you could use a stylus on the original tab. What is the upgrade that makes the note souh better with the stylus from the tab?

If you're planning to use it for note-taking, the note 10.1 is an easy choice. For everything else, you'll want to consider whether the faster processor is worth the price difference.
I would also wait on the note, even though it won't be out for a good while. I got the galaxy tab 10.1 a few weeks ago and am loving it so far. But this won't stop me from getting the note 10.1 the moment it becomes available (will have to sell this tab then lol). The biggest thing, for me personally, is the pen; stylus functionality isn't the best thing in the world when it comes to the original tab 10.1 even though it may be functional. But thats all it is, functional, not amazing or practical when it comes to taking notes (student's perspective). Of course the processor bump just makes it sweeter, I'm just hoping the price isn't too steep.
Would the Note have the same touch capability as the Tab if not using the pen? If so, then it was be a great plus!

Yes the stylus isn't required. The touch capability would be the same as the current tab, if anything better (highly unlikely) when it comes to using your fingers. The stylus just adds the extra dimension of certain apps that take advantage of that, such as iAnnotate PDF, Zenbrush, etc. And lets not forget the superb precision the pen will bring when it comes to drawing and taking notes. If Samsung puts in an AMOLED HD screen (Ok I'm seriously asking for too much with this suggestion) this tablet will be beyond perfect, IMO.
If price isn't a concern, I'd say wait for the Note. Why buy last year's model when the new one is right around the corner? The processor bump will probably be enough to justify the price difference, but I'm happy enough with my Tab to sit this round out.
as I have mentioned in other threads my experience with 3g model has not been good, as in Samsung stock experience.
The hardware is good, there is no denying of that of course, and if you can mod it you can get pretty good results (I am happy with the latest ROM I installed, Overcome + pershoot kernel).
Although samsung seems to be delaying ics upgrade in favor of new hardware and in my case in Spain I haven't received a single update to my 3g from stock HC 3.1, and stock is everything but functional after little use, not to mention no launcher hw acceleration so when you have a few icons, dragging them around can be infuriating, of course forget about live wallpapers, screen not refreshing certain elements after a while, reboots, and similar utter failure.
From what I am reading Asus is giving better support and motorola xoom already has ICS.
I even have a college at work who is talking wonders about a chinese tab (Onda?) which is much cheaper and already working with ICS.
I suggest you consider the manufacturer.
So here it is June. Any rumored dates for the Galaxy Note 10.1?
And will that justify a new forum, or will we continue with this one?

I don't have any of those problems with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Dragging icons is fine, live wallpapers work fine, everything refreshes as it should, and I've not had any spontaneous reboots. I'm not rooted and everything seems zippy and smooth. Best tablet I've had so far. I'd like ICS but I'm willing to be patient. I'm sure they have their hands full making sure it's stable and working properly with Touchwiz. Anyone waiting for it through a carrier should be angry with them, not Samsung. The carriers are the ones responsible for pushing the update and most of them drag their feet for some reason.

Personally I say neither and go with Asus. Of the tablets Samsung has been amount the worse at providing updates and failing to do so.

Untrue. LG and Motorola have been far worse. Again, any carrier locked device is at the mercy of the carrier, not Samsung. Samsung may very well have pushed the ICS update to all the major carriers but they haven't pushed it out to their customers yet. Probably because they want to shove all their own UIs and bloatware on it first.
I would be getting the tab sim free and adding a sim to it later on. I much rather not have a locked device if I can buy it depending on price. So I presume updating wont be an issue.
Still no word from samsung though about the release dates

[Owners Question] Is the Streak 5 a good SG Note Alternative

Hey guys i have a few questions for you owners DS5.
Im waiting on my DS5 screen to get fix. I got it as a gift from a customer with a broken screen. I flash phones for a living and we did a bit of a trade for my services. I wanna if its a good device to have. I really wanted the samsung note but its too expensive.
Here are a few questions:
Easy a fast device one rooted with a decent rom?
Is the battery life good?
What are your personal oppinions as owners. Do you like, love, or its a phone for now type of feeling.
Thanks
Sent from my Kindle Fire using XDA App
not really fast but ok for casual gaming / as another single core android
screen is big and okay
battery life is not good
(i use longhorn rom but set as performance mode on cpu clock)
Hmmm... I see...
I think I may use it for a few weeks then sell it.
I almost bought the Galaxy Note today.
Its super fast.
1G RAM and I think it has a Snap Dragon dual core processor.
Im not sure on that part.
Thank you for your input

The specs you wrote are those of the DS5.
As for the user experience. I just recently installed a custom rom and have always a spare battery with me because I use it a lot for calls etc. It is quite a good device and I really like the design but it's just a bit dated.
I have mine about a year and a half now and I still really like the device. Having a 5" is just great. My next device is going to be smaller though (4.7 / 4.8 inch).
If you find the note a bit expensive I recommend waiting for the next generation quadcores. Samsung devices always drop in price after a couple of months. The initial price for the Note was about 750,- or so and now it is available for €440,-
The story is the same with the S2. Initial price was around €700 /750 and it is now available for €380.
Hope this helped!
Personally I love it, battery life is alright for me on cm7.2 with dsc kernel and the 1800 mah battery from mugen, it keeps going for about a day with small use and about 400 texts. Overall I think this phone still has a bit of life left in it, seeing how almost all the market apps are still compatible and the community on here has a few great devs that devote a lot of their time to better the device.
well very good feedback. Thank you all for your comments. Im still waiting for my screen to be fixed. It should be done 2morow or friday. My sim broke so I am waiting for my new one. I switched to the Samsung Galaxy i500 aka fascinate for now. Thanks

S2 vs GNexus?

Hi!
I already asked this question at GNex forums, but I thought I could as well ask you guys too.
So, I'm buying a new phone. I'm not new to Android scene, but I've never actually had a high-end phone(well technically these both are last-era high-ends, but what ever...). So please guys, tell me why should I or why should I not buy S2 instead of Galaxy Nexus!
As far as I know, Nexus has better screen(larger and extreme resolution!), but S2 is more powerful. Though I've heard that Nexus' OMAP4 chipset is better than S2's Exynos. On the other hand Mali-400 is better than PowerVR...
Nexus would cost me 30€ less(GNex=370€ & S2=400€), that ain't a game changer though.
So tell me your opinions! So far I'm kinda gravitated on GNex due to the screen... Also it's the cheaper one of those two.
One thing that is a plus for S2 is larger community in XDA. I bet there are two times more roms for S2!(BUT, Nexus has alot of roms too, including CM9, AOKP, MIUI, Paranoid etc.)
Thanks!

Think that GNex will always have Google's native support. That's a plus for that one.
They're two beautiful phones. Very powerful.
I probabbly take the GNex, but, here's your choise
Also, you can wait and go for a better phone, like HOX, or SGSIII.
Greetings!

I love my s2. I'd say go with the s2 if it was between those two.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
go with nexus you will get awesome hd screen (300+ppi not bat ! ) official updates from google first hand (no need to flash unofficial roms to get the latest) total google experience (also you will get rid of that awful touch wiz)
and its cheep..
but......
here are some cons
no sd card (it only gonna fell if you going to buy 16 gb version)
ok video recording (in that case s2 is winner)
that's it i won't find any more cons in nexus but lottssss of in s2 that's why i am also going to buy nexus (but i am going to wait for thier next version may be moto nexus ......)
good luck .
Well, i have never used a nexus but i can write some pros for the s2
1.HUUUUGE community for roms and mods
2.Easily rootable
3.Easily modifyable
4.Good hardware
5.Pretty much impossible to brick
6.Probably has the best kernel for any phone ever. The siyah kernel.
But at this point in time , personally if i were getting a high end droid, i would get the S3 or Htc One X
But i personally recommend the s2

id buy the sgs2 over the nexus any day , no micro sd slot means i couldnt buy it if i wanted too , theres just not enough memory for my needs
also samsung sgs2 has a genuine 2000mah battery avalible
for me the sgs2 is only beaten by the sgs3 , id even rate the sgs2 more then the htc one x due to the one x having no removeable battery and no micro sd slot
horses for courses but sgs2 wins everytime for me
Hi i would go for gnex
Cuz of google support and cuz im pretty sure gnex will get gelly been inshallah
Bigger screen better resolution
And for me i have some problems with my sgs2 like over heat
So i would go for gnex if i had to choose again between them
I'd say go for gnex it got a better future i think
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Wanted the Gnex but only good thing about it is google support but the sII just pwns it in every other way... sad to say...
I own an s2 but not much experience with the gnex. S2 is good, when it works properly, but I suspect gnexus would be less hassles.
S2 isn't bad on paper but I miss the Nexus experience I enjoyed on my Nexus One.
PS. 2100mah genuine extended batteries exist for gnex, too.
Thanks guys! A s you see, i choose S2. It wad a hard decision, but I'm happy with this! I knew nexus would have been good, but i really think it wouldn't be any better than S2! This phone's performance is just mental! And it's fun to say Mali
And there was a campaign price for S2 due to there newly opened electronics store near me, I paid only 333 euros! Even cheaper than the Nexus!
Thanks for answers!
Edit. Damn You 8 thanks/ day

just a short question! Need advice!!

Hi everyone.
I'm thinking on buying one of this 2 phones:
- Htc one x
- Samsung glx s3
but i just wanna know from the people who own them or used some times, wich one is better? Like i saw lots of reviews and stuff but always telling about the speed of the processor and scores that they get. What i really need is to know how it is day-to-day use, like wich is good on playing games and also get some good baterry (like a day at least), get good video/fotos, etc
other question: i have an nexus s and i always get the lattest versions of software like now i have 4.1.1 for 3 weeks, so does this phones get also the lattest releases quick? (s2 for exemple was top level device but the galaxy nexus was better on getting the last releases)
Sorry on my english but i've tryed my best.
Thank you all.
cheers
These are two of the most competing phone on the market. There are plenty of S3 vs One X videos.
Gaming goes to S3, and battery life is supposed to be very very good on it too.
One X's camera I heard is quite amazing.
As for updates, Nexus got them faster than S2 because its a nexus device, S2 is not. But S2 had plenty of ROMs. S3 should have a lot of development as well.

[Q] Time To Upgrade?

Hi all,
I love this Galaxy Tab 10.1 (WiFi) but even with the CM10.0, it feels sluggish sometimes. I know it is now older tech. What ROM are you guys on? I like AOSP based ROMs more than TouchWiz..
I was thinking of selling this off (near perfect condition) and getting the Nexus 10. I would love to see benchmarks of that next to the Tab 10.1.
Thoughts?
BTW - I got an Apple iPad 4 mostly for work since AV manufactures all have apps for their products and I need to sell/use these. Honestly, the hardware is great, but I really do not like iOS, even after jailbroken and modded.
I use Infamous rom. If i had the money for a Nexus 10, I wouldve had it since it came out. Good hardware and best/latest Android versions.
Same problem here, I've tried loads of roms and they all lag in some way (infamous, AOKP, CM10 and CM10.1)
Not sure what to do next, it's just no where near as smooth as my galaxy s3 phone
Doubt you'll get much for this tab and the nexus is still quite expensive
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
I am going to buy the new nexus 7 (hopefully it will not take to long to release it) and keep my Galaxy tab. Probably will buy in 1 year a new 10 inch tab.
With CM 10.1, my tab is very nice (apart from some issues, that will be fixed). A little bit of lag from time to time, but I can live with it for the moment.
