So what is up with the built in Google backup's inconsistency - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not really a question so much as a rant/discussion/question mix.
To let it be known up front... I use Ti Backup for backup and restore of apps.
But the built in Google Android backup...
Its just so inconsistent... and not from the "not all the apps and data backup" perspective...
But from the "sometimes it never restores and sometimes it does" perspective.
I just flashed a CM10 nightly on my Gnex, after running CM9 for a while. It started restoring all sorts of apps imediatly, some I stopped using months ago. I went into the market to download Ti Backup, and there it was, a huge list of apps being downloaded.
Thing is, I had just done a factory reset and reinstall of CM9 the other day to fix a persistent bug with Gtalk... I got no automatic app restores when I did that. I used Ti Backup as normal.
I have noticed this odd behavior many times... even when using the same ROM or merely an update to that ROM.
Whats everyone else's experience with it? Anyone find some sort of pattern to explain its behavior?

Market (my apps) force closing

Started this morning. Market loads fine, can do searches, etc, but when selecting "my apps", getting an FC. I've cleared data, cleared cache in market, fixed permissions, wiped in cwm and even re-installed several times with no success. Worked fine the last few days. On cm7 with Glitch 11.1 hl.
ETA: Well, decided to take a chance, restored yesterday's nanroid and all is well. Something corrupted it, but I am perplexed as to what it could have been.

This is so true. When I first started with rooting and flashing, I thought all the Nandroid stuff was just kind of an unnecessary precaution. Then I realized that it's not uncommon for unexplained things like this to happen. It's much easier to just restore a backup than to take ages trying to figure it out.

Strange force-close pattern regardless of rom

A little background--I'm not a newbie and have been running custom roms on my Fascinate for many months (and my Droid before it), but I'm also not an expert or programmer. OK, with that out of the way, here's the issue. When JT came out with the first version of CM7 I switched to it from the Froyo CommRom. Since CM7 had a lot of issues in the early days, I carefully followed this sticky and returned to CommRom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124391
I've since had a pattern of getting severe force closes, to the point that the phone become non-functional, after several days of everything working fine. This has happened with CommRom, Evil Fascinate, CM7, and currently JT's Vanilla Gingerbread. I've gone back to stock many times, have cleared everything (including data), have run the ext4 formatter, have tried different radios (currently on EC09), and have tried different roms. In each case everything runs wonderfully for 2-4 days, then FC's begin. I use Titanium Backup Pro to restore things, but have been doing so without restoring data, since some say that causes FC's. I've also unchecked the options to have Google back up data, since some say that causes FC's.
I'm out of ideas and am getting tired of clearing data and starting over every few days. I suppose I could restore things to stock and see how that runs, but that might be too painful to survive. Anyone have any other ideas?
You mentioned that you restore apps with Titanium. Do you restore only downloaded apps, or system apps as well? Different ROMS often have different versions of system apps, which can cause problems when restoring.
I'd like to see this topic explored a bit deeper. My girlfriend and I both have Fascinates as well, and each of us sees significant force-close rates...not to the point where the phone doesn't function...but 5-10 per day.
Is this simply a chronic fascinate problem on the newer ROMS (we've used MIUI and Vanilla GB).
Have you tried going 4 days without any restore of any kind?
Try a fresh install from atlas/pit/ed05 and go with that for 4 days... No restores.
Probably not the answer you want, but it sounds like your backups contain corrupt data.

no its not a fascinate problem, its more likely user error... you must be installing apps & data with tibu. when jumping roms, only restore app's only. Also another thing to try is, boot into cwm, wipe cache, dalvik, and fix permissions.
Fwiw I very seldom ever get a FC...
I've been following the same pattern of behavior with the switching of ROMs and backing up with Titanium by restoring data and apps. My Fascinate picked up a number of bad habits along the way: phantom back button and keyboard button pressing, screen waking back up after I shut it off, and some force closes but nothing like some are reporting here.
I recently switched to PWGB which wipes all data. I used Titanium to restore contacts and text messages only and re-downloaded all the apps from the market.
Since the wipe everything has been smooth and error free.

you can use titanium to restore apps, long as you install app only.... do not install app+ data, thats where you run into problems.
I am experiencing this same issue. I first upgraded to CM7 nightlies back around August and that seemed to be the source of the issue. Each time it occurred, I would wipe data and it would disappear for several days or weeks. I then switched to jt's Vanilla GB, and had the same issue. Now I am on CM7.1 and am continuing to have the same problem. Wiping data seems to fix the problem, but it consistently returns after several days.
I did have some success with disabling sync and clearing data for the Contacts Storage and Google Framework applications, which seemed to stop the force-closing temporarily, but they did ultimately return. This only seemed to work for me once.

download disk usage from the market and check to see how full your /datadata folder is. I bet its full. there is a thread on rootzwiki about. you can either delete some apps or jt has a tweak to fix the issue.

I agree with this. Last summer I ran into a series of similar issues (fc and what not) on several roms. What I learned for myself is i never restore ANYTHING. What I do use tho is APP LIST BACKUP which is a very convenient and fast way to download apps fresh from the market. I currently enjoy a fc free phone

[Q] Anybody else get weird f/c in contacts?

Just a bit of info to pick everyone's brain:
Every time I would open the contacts and try to add a new contact, com.motorola.contacts would f/c.
I kept playing around with it, and when I tried to edit display options it would f/c. I ended up freezing about 10 different apps in Titanium Backup before I found the culprit: Contacts Sync, and now it works perfectly. WEIRD.
btw, I have made a full nandroid backup of my original system, and my phone has 0 bloatware removed. So idk if it's an issue with the stock rom, or me rooting, or what. but there you go. Any input is appreciated
I've got the same issue. I was wondering if I uninstalled a wrong file.
Having the same issue. I thought I tried unfreezing that and rebooted but still would not work. Will try again
Contacts sync is not frozen and I still cannot add contacts. Any other ideas appreciated.
I fixed the issue finally. When you are in Titanium Backup, first make a backup of the contacts sync apk, then convert it to a user app. fixed all my weird contacts issues and it actually still syncs my contacts.
I probably overlooked something when freezing apps, screwed something up. Can't wait for our fxz files!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the info. TB won't stop processing it but it started working again.

I had the same issue along with atquick IIRC. Restored all frozen apps/system with TiBu Pro; plus restored to original backup that was made when first rooted w/ Zedomax using modded Bionic Bootstrap. Nothing would correct FCs. Local VZW was told by Tech Support to replace phone!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20562332&postcount=7
Glad to hear you got your razr working again! Have to think the Bionic Bootstrap/recovery missed something during the backup; but that's just a guess.
FWIW...........

[Q] Google Backup/Restore???

So here is a question...
I have been updating roms on my devices (TP, Samsung Galaxy S devices, etc)for the last year or so.
My question is why do some of my devices (TP to be exact) take advantage of the Google Backup/Restore feature where as my other devices (Galaxy S - Captivate & Galaxy S Wifi 5.0) do not. I mean, I check the boxes during initial setup to allow Google to backup/restore my settings but why do some work and some don't?
When I flash new roms on my TP (CM9) I notice that as soon as I setup my Google account, it starts downloading all my apps that are associated with my tablet. Not 100% but close enough where I have to hunt for only a handful manually. Of course all the sideloaded apps and Amazon App store apps don't load automatically but that's ok. I would then use TIBU to restore data on some of these apps to get the TP back to operational state.
Now, on the other hand, my Captivate (ICS 4.0.3 - ICSSGS RC4.2) and my Galaxy S WiFi 5.0s (GB - Stock rooted and GB - 2.3.6 Custom) do not start the auto restore after the account setup.
Why is this different between devices? Is it rom dependant?
Anyone know?
I noticed this too on my EVO when I used specific roms. For one of my roms, the developer eventually fixed the issue a few releases down the road. That's all I know of that though.
Generally, most rom developers prefer you to use something other than Googs backup. Titanium is a good example. Works well w/ backups, and restore. Alot of apps that are generally for rooting are not in market. Just my opinion...

I get that... that was my understanding and my experience so far... I just always wondered about the purpose of the Google Backup/Restore during initial setup since it never did anything... until the last few rom updates on my TP. The first time I noticed was with XRON GB rom... it was downloading apps (not all) even though I had deleted them all... odd I thought... and then I saw it with CM9 A.5 and A.6... and now with A2... and I am starting to like it... I use my tablet with apps loaded. I don't keep it for just testing...
I do use TIBU but I find it more assuring to install apps fresh from the Market after each update. This consumes a lot of time.
With the latest release, I was able to get my setup with all the apps, desktop configuration, widgets, etc... in 30 mins... fresh to operational in 30 mins instead of 3-4 hours that used to take for me to recreate my settings... I am a bit anal about how things need to look so I would take the time... now it seems I don't have to as much.
I always do a cwm backup before flashing a new rom. After flashing, I do a restore data. This gets all my apps back. It's worked fine so far.

Weird issue with Settings / Applications Manager

I have tried most of the JB Roms for the Galaxy S3, trying to see what would bother me less in every rom as a missing or not working feature.
I am facing the same problem with almost all roms (but not with all).
As soon as I bring back my applications and data through Titanium backup (never restoring the system files of course) then when I go to Settings/Applications Manager and try to scroll through the installed applications it always freezes and I get the message "Unfortunately, Settings has Stopped" and I get back to home screen.
As I said I did not had the problem only with a couple of roms (not remembering which ones though) but having it most of those I flashed.
All the roms have always been flashed on totally blank mediums since I have always used full wipes (tried to reflash a couple of them on top just to see if this would fix the problem but it did not)
Note that all applications do scroll normally and very fast in other programs also listing the installed applications, either through Titanium Backup or even in the drawer where all apps literally fly when scrolling.
Any help or advice would be greatly.
Does it work ok before you restore apps from Titanium Backup? If it does, try just restoring the apps one at a time and testing after each one. I suspect there's a duff application in there that's been restored, and that's causing the problem
Alternatively just reinstall the apps from the Play Store rather than using TB.
Thank you anthropolyte, man you are fast.
Thought of many things related to JB (because up until v4.0.4 I did not have this issue with - almost - the same applications installed) but I did not think for a moment that a specific application could be the issue. I will re-flash the rom later today and try it your way.
I will report back in case someone faces the same issue.
You're welcome - good luck!
Dear jsfero, did you manage to solve that problem? I'm just facing the same. Firstly I thought it was due to blackm* app but after uninstall it nothing changed. Then I thought it may have to do with apps in drawer showing the same name. Then I kept one and uninstalled the other. Nothing changed. I'm just a bit bored with this situation. My only difference is that I occurred to me also with ICS, not only with JB or CM10.
Could you provide me with some light about this issue?
Many thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, after having tried almost everything from re-flashing to re-downloading all my apps, I could not manage to find out the source of this problem.
It is only just by accident that I found out that a couple of ROMs are not causing any problem and the phone works perfectly well. The one I do remember and I do use now as my main daily usage ROM is the one from Sotmax.
Now, I don't know if this problem is the outcome of a 'bad' combination or bad coexistence of certain programs from kernel or Rom, all I know is that my exact same Titanium back with over 300 apps is the same one I tried on all the Roms so I doubt that the problem is coming the applications side. It was always as if the amount of applications / data was too high for the Roms to handle and crashed the application. And all the sudden one day, I simply realized that with Sotmax's Rom and same applications installed via Titanium did not cause any problem or malfunction.
I even changed kernels, from stock to Siyah and now Perseus, the problem seems to be gone for good with this Rom. I am sure that I must have found a one or two other Roms which did not cause the problem either, unfortunately I did not like them that much to keep them and remember which one they were.
HTH
I had the same problem as well unfortunately, also couldn't access App info/app size
Had to uninstall some apps, then reinstalled them again
But I can't install broken Sword without getting the problem again
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Yes, I can confirm that Broken Sword game causes App Info to crash. Another one that I found is from Samsung Apps called "Catch The Monkey". Troubleshooting this was time consuming as I had to uninstall each app in the sequence (refering to appbrain.com which has the sequence of apps I installed from Google Play) and keep testing whether App Info crashes or not.
