[Q] [HELP] Restoring the Data from Data.img - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Folks,
After S-0ff and Rooting, Like other Users, me too constantly switching between the ROMS. Taking Backup of the App and Restoring the same is kind of
hard due to frequenct switching. So, After flashing the custom ROM, shall i restore the data by restoring data.img from the nandroid backup?
Just Searched over the xda that flashing the ROM with different versions say, ICS to JB or GB to ICS, this would cause problem due to App compatibility. BTW, Can i restore if i am switching between same versions?
Any Suggestion or feedbacks from the Users who restored using data.img?
Ta!

[Q] Noob question: Replacing ROMs

I couldn't find an answer to this.
If I change to another ROM, will I also have to reinstall all the CABs? I'm currently using Mighty ROM, but want to try some of the newer ROMS floating around.
Use a backup app like sprite backup to backup all your data. Than just flash the new rom you want and after that, restore the data.

[Q] If i upgrade to ICS 4.0.3 can I use kies to restore all my data?

Edit: seems titanium backup is a nogo on the CM9 alphas, but might work on the samsung leaks.
For sms use a program like sms backup+ (also backs up call logs and mms, but cant restore mms only sms and call log)
For contacts google contacts sync.
Beware the ICS builds are still of alpha quality to make sure to take a nandroid of your rom before you flash ICS.
Also some people have had problems moving back from ICS to gingerbread without using a pit and repartitioning (which can hardbrick, and is best to avoid, aka try flashing between them without doing it), so beware
Make sure you read and understand what you are getting into before you flash any of the ICS roms.
Backup
NOOOOO, don't use titanium!!!
codeworkx, says that you mustn't!!!
Do nandroid backup (from CWM) instead or backup with applistbackup (market)
I have CM9 (ICS 4.0.3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410400
and I have no problem flashing from GB->ICS and vice versa... (I did it several times)
and DO NOT use repartition, for ANY reason!!!! It hard-bricked my i9100 and I sent it to sumsung (I was lucky, and the fixed it at no charge )

Ah, didn't notice that about titanium in the CM9 thread, weirdness of these alphas But I think it does work at least for restoring user data on the samsung releases.
As far as repartitioning, its not recommended (and noted that a bad flash can hard brick), as i noted, but I have seen at least 2 people who couldn't move back to GB without doing it, goodness knows why.
Do a CWM backup b4 flashing cm9.
Do backup of user apps with titanium backup b4 flashing cm9.
Flash cm9 then restore what you want from titanium backup. All my apps restored with data intact.
If your not bothered about your apps data just restore the app.
As far as I know the disclaimer about titanium backup was for the very early releases where external SD was broken.
After youre happy with the cm9 setup backup via CWM.
Now you can flip between stock and cm9 by restoring via CWM.
Also you can upgrade between cm9 versions without loosing data by flashing cm9, then gapps, then face unlock and simply wipe cache. (Not full wipe)
Ive used this process and have had no problems. Hope this helps.

[Q] Backup & Restore App

My phone isn't rooted or unlocked and I'm currently on the latest ICS (.453) and am considering downgrading to GB (.75).
Does GB come with the Sony Backup & Restore app?
And, if so, can I use it to restore a backup made in ICS and get back my messages, game data, etc.
Thanks in advance!
Backups between OS versions, especially backwards, are always a bad idea.

Titanium Backup seems to handle restoring game data ... which is all I really care about TBH. Just wondered if anyone had tried this...

CWM Restore between two different ROMS

Does CWM have the capacity to run a restore from a Stock ROM while the ROM in action is Dorian RED PILL? Or would that cause infintely bad issues?
If not possible, I am interested in attempting to develop something that could allow this to take place!

What do you want to restore, the previous ROM or apps and data?

I was wanting to restore apps/data. I didn't back up my texts before I switched ROMS so I wanted to go back, back up texts then come back to R.P.
Restoring data would only work ok if the roms are very similar: same custom or stock rom base which contains almost the same apps and version. But, restoring stock data to a custom rom will most likely just give you a bootloop.
Titanium backup already has an option to selectively restore apps and data from a nandroid backup, though it doesn't fully work when changing android versions (gb to ics).
It would be great if you could make an alternative to selectively restore apps and/or data from nandroid backups using a UI.

ARGH...that's what I was thinking. I'll start looking into an alternative and see what I can come up with.

[Q] Restoring a Nandroid or Titanium Backup?

I'm wondering what's the best way to go about restoring my data after updating roms and switching between roms. I get that I should make nandroids before flashing roms and such. But let's say I'm just updating from an older version of a rom to a newer version, is it safe to just restore the data and cache parts of the nandroid or is it better to just restore my Titanium Backup backups for user apps? If I were to go to a different rom, would I also be able to restore data and cache from nandroid? Thanks for the help.

I would definitely go titanium. I ran through about 3 or 4 roms, some aosp some TW and I was always able to restore user app data from titanium without a hitch.
