CM10 basic questions ? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

1) I assume going back to stock would be risky after this is flashed ?
2) Currently rooted 1.43 16 gb. Can I flash cm10 with old sd version of clockwork mod ?
3) Regarding recoveries, Do I need an internal one ? if so which one and why does it matter which one ? and then what is the best way to install a recovery for cm10 ?
Thanks

I am flashing CM10 with my SD card version of CWM and it does work. I have had no issues.
Going back to stock is not really an issue. Flask Adam Outlers "acclaim_update.zip and you go back to 1.4.0 like it's right out of the box. Even better you should do a nandroid backup before anything else and just restore that. If you appear to still be rooted there is a way to unroot.
You do not need an internal recovery as long as you keep your sd card recovery.

Hi Thanks for the info. I'm comfortable flashing the rom, but I thought being kernel 3.0, it might cause a brick flashing an old kernel over it. I currently have 2 Nooks. One is bricked at the moment from trying to go from cm9 to cm7. , I think the partitions are messed up.

[Q] Where to next? Just rooted and downloaded Rom Manager

Hi,
Just took the plunge into rooting my MyTouch4G. Followed the rooting process via theunlockr.com and I'm now looking for a rom to flash.
I guess my real question is about rom manager / clockworkmod recovery. I was asked to check-mark "Erase Recovery." Then, I flashed it and was able to go into recovery mode. What exactly did this flashing do?
I understand this backed up my system that I can go back to later on but..
* Is this first flash of my stock rom then?
* Will this 'flash' always be available for me to go back to in case something happens?
* Where was this saved to? (I'd like to make sure this file is actually there. I'm a bit paranoid)
Sorry if this was a lot, I just want to be clear on things especially my backup files. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

1) You flashed clockwork mod's recovery. This replaced the stock recovery that you had.
2)Backups are stored in the clockwork floder on your sd card. (always keep the one you made when first rooting) but try not to have too many backups in the folder. It will take a lot of space on your sd card. It will always be available to you to flash back to. It is mainly used if you are going to un-root the device.
3) From this point you want to find a rom that fits you well. The Team Royal roms, for me, run the smoothest. If you like the stock myTouch look then flash the Royal Glacier rom.
4) Make a backup everytime you flash something new. Then go into the sd card and remove the ones you wont need anymore. JUST MAKE SURE TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL! They are all saved by date.
I hope this helps

All you did was erase the stock recovery image and replace with one that is actually usable. Nothing to be worried about

When you do a nandroid back up it is stored on your SDCard. /Sdcard/Clockwork/backup/<the file name>. it will be there until you delete it. I would recommend burning that [your first] Nanadroid backup to a CD-ROM incase you should ever need it. That way you know you will always have it.
I would HIGHLY recommend following the link in my signature to flash 3.0.0.6 recovery image before doing anything else. There are 2 different style ROMs floating Gingerbread [2.3] and FroYo [2.2], the recovery images can get goofy. But the 3.0.0.6 will solve both problems.

i agree!!! it works wonders
also don't forget this thread for TRUE ROOT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
and as neidlinger stated, make sure you flash clockwork 3.0.0.6 unless you're planning on flashing CM 7 nightlies/ RC
I reccomend royalthunder by teamroyal
It is by far the fastest rom with good stability, performance and best battery life.
It also has a cool bootanimation with a lightning noise and includes smartass/faux's kernal to OC upto 1.8 ghz xD
i could be wrong, but it doesn't sound like he made a backup. It sounds like he just flashed his recovery and then booted into it after.
Make sure you go to backup/restore in recovery and actually create a backup before you start flashing ROMs.

I'm actually in the same boat, just a few steps further. I used ROM Manager to flash Clockwork and did a Nandroid backup If you haven't backed up, do that before continuing, and I'd recommend keeping a copy of the stock backup on a hard drive or pc as well as on your sd card (from the SD card, the backup will be in the clockwork folder, mine was about 700 MB).
The problem with ROM Manager is that it gave me CW 3.0.0.5, so I followed the guide to get 3.0.0.6, which worked really well. After that, I flashed Faux's kernel so I could overclock and have better battery managers.

Same question. Not sure what ROM to get because I keep hearing about stability and bugs (wifi not working, etc.) So, I guess what is royal thunder like?
RoyalThunder is a 2.2.1 Froyo ROM port of the Verizon HTC Thunder Bolt. I run this ROM and I have to say its one the best ROMs out. I also recommend the other TeamRoyal ROMs.

[Q] Ready To Install ROMs?

I am pretty much trying to double check and make sure I have done everything needed before installing a custom ROM. I have a LG P509 from T-Mobile. I rooted my phone and backed everything up on my SD card using Titanium Pro. Then I installed a custom recovery (Thunderbird) following instructions from the forums. From recovery I did a Nand backup. I chose Nand+extra+android_secure. (I am unsure if that was the right option to choose, if not can I just delete the nandroid folder from my SD and repeat the process the right way?). I replaced then lost my original boot animation before backing up, does that really matter? I was reading about a custom ROM and it said something about "requiring AMON_RA recovery". I used thunderg and was wondering the difference, if I should install it and how to do so (if its the same process/where to find the files)? From everything I have done I should be able to recover to pretty much my stock phone, correct? One last question, does installing ROM and/or kernals completely erase, reformat my SD card? I have read up a ton but some things haven't been fully clear to me. I know these questions have probably been answered a million times so I thank you for all the help and insite! If I missed or forgot some things please let me know as well, thanks.
You are ready the method to back up also fine now just download rom u like and flash it.
No installing rom doesn't format ur sdcard. But some rom requires u too partition ur sdcard that's where sdcard gets formatted.
The recoverry u install is old I think u should flash new ones like amonra or cloakwork but be aware that the nandroid backup of different recovery is not compatible with each other.

first if u want amonra orelse clockwork which can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1024838 just place the file in ur sd card root and flash from recovery then reboot. DONE! u can find the latest amonra recovery here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065197.
now when u install a new rom and wipe ur sd card then obvious that it wipes ur sd completely as some rom require to create ext partition so keep all your backup safe in pc too.
Boot animation is not an issue at all.
as for the backup nand we normally choose nand+android secure (in case no ext partition) and nand +android secure+ext (in case of ext parttion) i am not sure about the exact lines as different recovery might have differnt option type but moreorless they are same.
note:if u flash any other recovery like amonra or clockwork it is better to create a new backup using the latest recovery
I'm about to flash my first rom too. After reading alot and trying to undestand all those procedure is hard, as english is not my primary language. Recently I have install root and install costum recovery 1.2 from terminal emulator and did some nandroid backups. Also did a stock recovery backup.
My phone is stock and my provider is Telus. Do I have to unlock the phone or anything similar before flashing a new rom?
Not sure if it works on a locked phone, guess it will.
Just give it a shot, you can restore your nandbackup any time if it fails.
Hi
I would like to install mik's cm7 ROM but there are some things which I did not understand (never installed custom ROMs before, so I'm a noob):
- which recovery should I use? Amonra or Clockwork? (some explanations here contradict others, so it's not clear to me: should I copy in my SD card root both recovery.img and signed_recovery files? Because in the clockworkmod recovery topic I only found the archive containing the recovery.img file, no signed_recovery anywhere. Also in the ROM Manager app there is the option Flash ClockworkMod Recovery - can I flash a custom recovery just by pressing this option?)
- do I need to partition my SD card for this ROM? If it's necessary, how should I do it best? I mean, I was thinking at 32mb cache, 1mb ext2 or 4 and the rest fat32. And what is the real use of this partitioning?
Sorry for asking a lot of silly questions, but there is no real full tutorial for noobs here, and reading all the explanations spread around the forum is kinda confusing.
Thanks in advance
Thanks. I went ahead and flashed to the new recovery, worked perfect, and made new backups. Just waiting to get to a computer to backup to PC.

I just want the right tools to proceed to flash as smooth as it can be.
Again do I have to unlocked the phone or do anything else before flashing a first custom rom? The phone is stock, beside root and custom recovery.

[Q] Clockworkmod recovery problem...

Hi, stupid question here from a relative noob....
I have a Cincinnati Bell Vibrant, that I recently flashed CM7 on (after using Rom Manager to backup up my stock rom). Liked it, but found it too battery-intensive, so I booted into clockworkmod recovery and attempted to restore the backup of my stock rom. It failed on flashing the boot image, and now my phone is stuck on the Vibrant screen, and won't boot. None of the hardware combinations to get into recovery mode are working, but I can get it into download mode. Before I screw things up further, what is the best way to go from here to get the backup restored, or is it even possible at this point?
Thanks

This doesn't sound too bad. Basically you want to Odin back to stock. Then reflash the rom you were on, then you can reboot back into recovery and restore your backup. If voodoo was enabled on your backup make sure voodoo is enabled again before restoring(it might work either way, but I'm not sure). When I've done this, I restore a prerooted 2.2 stock Rom without changing the bootloaders, but almost any official stock rom will also work. I'm on the go, so I don't have a link handy, but post back if needed and I will point you to the odin package I use. Good luck.
I also am having some issues with Clockworld recovery. The problem i am having is that when doing a nandriod backup this is the error i am recieving
"E:cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 (or @)
Cant mount /mnt/sdcard
any suggestions on whats going on?

yes it is good because i can see all the videos, pics i have saved in it. Also i put the new ROM on my internal sd card and its there so sd card is def good. What could be causing the problem?
To the op, I would use Odin, no real worries there.
To the other guy with sdcard issue, try moving all files to your PC, format your sdcard, reboot, move files back, flash cwr in ROM mgr, backup work? Move critical files back from PC.

Thanks...that's exactly what I did, except the backup would never quite "take." It completely loaded and cycled through the boot process, but I ended up on a boot-restore loop. So now I've Odin-ed back to stock with the closest build I could find to my stock (which I don't think is out there yet - FROYO.UVJL6.ULTIMOBILE - do you know anywhere to find it?), rooted, and am searching for a good, stable, battery-friendly mod once again.

You could always ODIN, and use my option b cwr in the noob guide. I just tested making a backup using trigger 8/22 and know there are no issues. Not really sure whats up on your end. I will say though, I've emailed koush several times that there is an issue with cwr on the vibrant from rom manager, for some it won't even flash.

Yes, in the main menu I think like the 3 option. Mount USB or USB mount will allow you to mount the SD card to the computer and you can file transfer.

The latest ICS leak has new firmware which changes the SD Card mount points (among other things).
When running the latest ICS based roms, you either need to update the firmware or see if the dev offers an SD Card mount patch so the newer version of ICS will work with the older firmware.
I was asking if you installed the RUU because you can't go back to the GB RUU if you did. Since you didn't, mount the card as noted in recovery and use this to go back to a rooted stock rom.
Stock rom - http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=76
Boot Image - http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=77
You'll need to flash the boot image with fastboot like you did your recovery.
And next time, I recommend a nandroid back up before you change roms in case you want to revert back.

[Q] gt-i9100 problem after using clockworkmod

Hello almighty XDA peoples.
I watched the video, I have lurked here for months. I read everything I could on my phone, but I feel like my dilemma is slightly different. If not I would be glad to rectify it.
I purchased an unlocked gt-i9100 in the UK. I now use a Tmobile sim in the US.
After a lot of reading, I rooted my phone using ODIN and CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LQ5-v5.6-CWM5 kernel.
I installed titanium backup, and used it. I put in ROM manager.
I decided I wanted to put a custom ROM on, but I read that a full wipe was necessary so I went into clockworkmod recovery. I followed all the instructions.
Now I can't boot into OS. I can get into both clockwordmod and download mode, but my computer wont recognize my phone so I can't put a zip file onto my sd card. (probably should have done that first huh)
All I want is a normal working phone. I will leave rooting to the professionals.
It was previously running 4.0.4 xxlq6.

Ouch.
Rather dont wipe with the Samsung 4.0.4 kernel they had the brickbug...
You can try reinstall the drivers on the PC for the phone and also make sure KIES is not running then try download mode again else
try take the sd card out of the phone and put it in the pc and copy the ROM on to the SD card that way then flash with CWM.
A SD card reader is cheaper then fixing the phone if you don't already have one....
I can still access download mode and CWM though. Is that a sign of life? I went a bought a micro sd card and have put the rom onto it, which hopefully I can access through CWM. WIll update soon.

Having read the thread about 4.0.4 being susceptible to bricking, I'm now wondering what to do.
I bought a microSD card and put the Resurrection remix zip on it. I can access that though CWM and it's allowing me to update. WOuld it be better to try to downgrade to gingerbread or an early ICS, or have I passed the point where my phone should be bricking? Thanks so much in advance.

Well firstly why did you use Rom Manager? Its not properley compatible with I9100 and can lead to issues like you have if you mess about and try to flash kernel through it.
If you can still access download mode simply flash stock via ODIN and then flash custom kernel like Siyah (version depends on rom version) to gain root, cwm etc.
Alternatively first flash Siyah (.tar version) via ODIN then flash your custom rom.

if you can access download/recovery your device is not bricked. Just do as I said above and flash kernel or rom via ODIN.
I guess sometimes reading doesn't equals learning.
Wait a sec, I already knew that. Reading whole threads intead of OP-only equals learning.
