Alright so i just got a new HTC Evo LTE coming from a Nitro HD on AT&T and i wanted to be able to flash custom roms and kernels, add mods and what not. this is my first HTC device and it seems that everything seems to be longer. Before all i had to do was unlock bootloader, root rom, and flash custom recovery and bam. New roms and kernels. I see here that i need to achieve S off? i know what is that but some report that they can flash roms with S on. (unfortunately im on 1.22.651.3). And also, what would be the sequence of getting things done? is it unlock bootloader, Root, custom rom, and then S off?
Thanks for the help clearing a couple of things up. (im not a newbie, but im not en expert)
Seeing as you have the newer firmware, you cannot get S-OFF. Don't worry though, as you can still get custom recoveries and ROMs flashed, there are just a few extra steps involved.
Basically the order would be:
HTCDev unlock.
Root.
Flash custom recovery.
Flash custom ROM.
Flash custom kernel with fastboot.
Profit!
I suggest reading through this guide first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869377
That should answer most of your questions.

If you want the latest radio and kernel...
Take the latest OTA (2.13)
HTCDev unlock.
Root.
Flash custom recovery.
Flash custom ROM.
Flash custom kernel with fastboot.
Profit!
Once you get rooted you'll need to know how to flash kernels on Hboot 1.15+
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/606748-how-install-kernels-h-boot-1-15-a.html
I would advise NOT taking the OTA as the poster above suggested

Sorry for the noob question, but do these ROMs require the phone to be rooted?
Yes, all ROM's require the phone to be rooted.
yo
Start out with HTC Unlock. Lots of info on this site about it.
Then install a custom rom. It will already be Rooted,
After you've learned more, then you make it S-0ff.
Then you can go backward and forward in radio and other
options without worries.

Wrong. You don't need root. You need to unlock the boot loader. All instructions for that are in HTCDev.com
you need to Unlock your bootloader first in order to flash a Recovery like CWM or AmonRA which will then allow you to flash/install rooted roms.
Note: if you are on Gingerbread and are going to flash an ICS rom, PLEASE download the required kernel they provide for you to flash as well as the ICS rom. but kernels are flashed through the bootloader/hboot and not in recovery. unless your S-off. if your'e S-on, flash kernels in bootloader.
what does that mean. apparently there is a technique to root the phone and put CWR on it to flash things. but why is unlocking the bootloader so important.

Unlocked Bootloader allows one to flash custom Kernel/ROMs.
If you don't know what flashing means or don't care about anything custom, then you're all good to go...
Methods have been discovered so far to boot custom recoveries, root, and boot custom kernels. Still cant flash a new bootloader. What that basically means as far as I understand it, is that while we can run custom kernels, etc, the exploit can be quickly patched by an OTA, and anyone using said method will not be able to take OTA updates.
Its a workaround, not a polished solution (yet), but the devs are doing amazing work, and if you care about the cause then be sure to donate to them!
Hi all, back when the unlock was released for this phone I installed a custom GB rom on my brother's phone. I am very experienced.with flashing and rooting etc so this wasn't a problem. Now with S-Off things have gotten a bit more complicated, not to mention the mainver nonsense I've been reading about. To make matters worse I haven't found a good thread outlining all these details on what needs to be done for the transition from GB to ICS; everyone basically assumes you're already on ICS and either S-On or S-Off.
So I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can answer.
1. I want to keep my brother's phone S-On. I have reviewed the S-Off method and deem it too risky for hardware that is not my own. That said, what's the best path to getting to a custom ICS OTA based rom from GB firmware?
a. Should I flash stock GB, relock phone, install OTA, unlock phone, install custom ICS rom?
b. Should I directly install a certain firmware from the boot loader along with a custom ICS OTA based rom from recovery? If so, which firmware should I flash? Is there any mainver stuff I need to tweak?
c. Or something else?
2. I always perform backups before flashing a new rom to ensure if something goes wrong I can restore to the previous rom image. However, if I backup a GB rom that runs on an older firmware and install ICS based on a newer firmware, would restoring to GB be as simple as going into recovery and restoring his old GB rom? Or would I have to flash the old firmware first?
3. I've noticed some roms like Viper use aroma installer which can handle multiple situations of installation. Would the situation I am describing (GB firmware, S-On) be handled? I am unsure how many different firmware versions there are out there. I don't know if referring to the "old firmware" means an older ICS firmware or GB firmware.
Thank you all for your help. It is frustrating for me to be this confused about how to upgrade a phone considering the amount of times I've done it in the past. I appreciate any responses or links that could help me better understand what I must do.
so your s-on and unlocked? or locked either way
re-lock if you are unlocked and then run
the ics offical .exe RUU from
here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29979907&postcount=133
after you do that then unlock and flash a custom recovery then flash a ics rom of your choice

Try CleanROM, I've been using it since I got it. Very easy to install with S-On.
nstallation for S-ON Devices on Gingerbread firmware
Copy ROM to SD Card AND PH98IMG.zip AND GB Firmware Patch to ROOT of SD Card
Reboot to recovery
wipe data / Factory Reset
Flash ROM
Flash GB Fimrware Patch
Use Developer Menu to reboot to bootloader and flash the boot.img file in the PH98IMG.zip
Reboot
Profit!

The phone might say something about the SD card not working, so make sure you download the Gingerbread Firmware patch. Just Flash it like a rom and you're all god

hi there to all experts,
recently i have got a 2nd hand flyer(bought from singapore, due to a sticker name "singtel") for my parents as a gift(it's free, so...)
what i want to do now is:
1. to erase all apps and data, just to make it look like newly bought Just do a factory reset. I'd be surprised if this was not already done by the previous owner, all their user data would still be intact!
2. to root What hboot version are you on? As long as your hboot version is compatible, you should be able to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709
Downgrade to GB required if you are on stock HC.
3. to install a custom rom on to it, i got a recommandation rom --- LeeDrOiD_Flyer_HC_V4.3.0.zip, already downloaded
i have run through the forum for advice and tutorial,
but i'm not expert to programing, so don't understand many programing language, No programming language is needed. Usually anyone that can follow directions, and has some familiarity with computers can get S-off and root. But some of the terms (jargon) may be new to you.
1.i'm in hc flyer 3g+wifi, do i need to downgrade to gb to gain root and flash custom rom? Yes. You need to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307759
Then this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709
2.can i flash a custom rom on stock hc after i have root it? You need to have S-Off or unlocked bootloader
3.what is s-off? and how do i get it? S-Off means all security is off. It means you can flash ROMs, kernels, radios. With an unlocked bootloader, you can flash ROMs, but not kernels and radios.
4.can flyer do a phone call? i see some treat say it can but some say no Should be able to just fine. There are custom ROMs that support it, and I believe a separate mod for it in Development. But I've never used this function myself.
5.which steps should i take the best to install a custom rom:
----i'm in hc flyer---->s-off----->root----->install cwm----->install custom rom?
or
----i'm in hc flyer----->s-off----->root----->downgarde to gb----->install cwm----->install custom rom?
Neither. You can't S-Off from HC.
Downgrade to GB>S-Off>Install CWM>root>install custom ROM.
6.is hc like ics, which mean if u do a full wipe, u'll brick ur device? What do you mean by "full wipe"? You can wipe data, cache, Dalvik and system just fine on HC or ICS. Altering hboot may brick the device, but that goes with any Android version.

Your hboot versions is unfortunately not supported by globatron's S-Off method that I linked.
You can take a look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1881748
But I personally have no experience with it.
In short, you should be able to unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com, install CWM, and flash SU to get root.
[Thread Ended, Forum Master Please Delete it, TQ for all the support
With the bootloader unlocked and custom recovery (CWM) installed, you can flash custom ROMs. Only difference with unlocked bootloader versus true S-Off, is that you have to extract the boot.img file from the ROM zip, and flash it separately using fastboot (Flyer connected to your PC).
Thread Ended, Forum Master Please Delete it, TQ for all the support
That all sounds right.
With the addition of:
5) Extract boot.img from custom ROM zip file.
6) Flash boot.img using fastboot
As already mentioned, I didn't have to go the bootloader unlock method, as I have full S-Off. But this is my understanding from what I've read, and flashing ROMs on my HTC One X phone is similar.

NOOOOO. It doesn't work that way. Just because you had your question answered, does not mean that you delete all the content and ask the mods to delete the thread.
Others may have the same question, and might benefit from your thread. This way, people can just look for an existing answer, instead of having to post new threads to ask the same questions over and over again.
What could have been a useful post for others, is now useless.
Really, WTF???? Why did you do this???? Its not just about you, dude.
Hello,
I wanted to have newer android and have rooted and flashed HTC Amaze with Hasoons toolkit using TWRP recovery system. After flashing Cyanogenmod 10 ROM through ADB Sideload and flashing Cyanogenmod 10 ROM kernel (boot.img file which was included in the zipped folder) manually with Hasoons toolkit, the phone started to boot normally, load welcome screen, but after several seconds it freezes and then restarts. Can you please help what can be the cause of this problem and how can I repair? The phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked, but its still S-ON.
Before installing the Cyanogenmod I have tried to flash other ROMs, but on all of them after flashing kernel, the phone was freezing on booting mode and then just restarting continuously.
I hope there should be some way out and the phone is not bricked. If something I have backed up the data and will try to restore, but would prefer to repair Cyanogenmod ROM.
Thank you guys in advance for your help.

Did you follow the directions posted in the pinned threads at the top of the forums and update to ICS before unlocking and flashing these other ROMs?
I ask because if you say you're unlocked, but s-on, and you need to be on an ICS radio baseband prior to flashing any newer ROM. If you were already on ICS prior to these flash attempts then I suggest you try again with the latest version of 4ext instead of TWRP, and make sure to enable smart-flash. TWRP doesn't flash kernels properly on HTC handsets with s-on, while 4ext does when smart-flash is enabled. Of course all of this comes with the stipulation that you're doing this on a T-Mobile US version handset.
If you're on an Asian or non-branded international version it gets a bit more complicated because you must attain s-off before attempting to flash. This is because these handsets never got an ICS update. So there is no carrier image to flash to, and the only way to install the updated firmware with the ICS baseband is to attain s-off first then flash the T-Mobile US image.
Again, if you haven't I strongly suggest reading the pinned threads at the top of the different forums here as they contain all of the info you need to successfully flash your device to an updated ROM. Good luck.

Thank you for information. It is non-branded international version. It means I will have to try S-off and then flash the ROM with 4ext.

Please read the pinned threads first. You're going to have to relock your bootloader before proceeding, so save the binary unlock blob you got from HTC as you'll need it to unlock again. Place the stock image in the root of your external SD card and flash from hboot. Then after getting s-off and superCID then you can flash the T-Mobile ICS image. Again read the pinned threads thoroughly or you'll be posting about how to unbrick your handset. Good luck.

I had the same issues and had to turn off security with the joupunut bear program. Just to be safe with future flashing I've understood it works best. You should first s-off your phone and then go about flashing whichever firmware you want. Make sure you upgrade to the stock ics rom first as a pre requisite towards flashing any other rom and you'll be fine. Do a search on the stuff needed to gain s-off here in the forums. Report back if you need more assistance
