[Q] How to save the stock recovery and stock ICS for backup - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was able to get the ICS OTA update no problem and now I'd like to save the recovery from it I guess to flash through ODIN after being on a rom. Can someone direct me to a guide or tell me of a method that I can use that would be able to save the recovery?
And if possible a zip to flash in CWM or Odin to put me on stock ICS? If not then I would just make nandroid backup which is how I got on stock Honeycomb previously for the OTA update.

Bump!
My brother wants the tablet so having this as a backup incase he wants to flash new things to it would be beneficial to me.

The easiest way is called a nandroid backup, and can be made easily with CWM. You need to get CWM on your tablet via ODIN (CWM 5504 is best choice) and then boot into recovery mode (i.e. when off hold power and volume- buttons together, release power when Samsung logo comes up and release volume- when the 2 options appear), select the recovery-mode (one volume- and then volume+ to activate).
There is a backup/recover option. Select this one and create a backup. It will go into a folder clockworkmod/backup with the date-time stamp as foldername. You will then need to copy that backup off the tablet to your PC and you will have a restore point.
Just google nandroid backup or search in these forums.
Good luck!

how to restore the launcher

I deleted my launcher using titanium back up and i backed it up before i did that but now i cant do any thing and my phone doesnt load..
i didn't have any rom i only rooted and flashed stock kernel before that.
help please ?
Flash a custom rom through odin or a stock rom if you prefer but it will need to be done through odin
by saying stock rom you mean stock kernel?
Did you do a full titanium backup ? If so, it might be faster to reflash the firmware and do the full restore...
If you was freezing the launcher instead, you could just wipe data (factory reset) then do a full restore.
Do you have access to the external sd ? If so you could ask someone to provide update.zip which has a twlauncher.apk then flash it via CWM. This could work
Good luck.
my phone doesn't load up... it has that S shining and the logo underneath it but it doens't load... i need to flash something but i don't know what?
i tryig flashing these two and it faild

how can i find update.zip files? who do i need to ask to provide them? and what is CWM? is to flash it with odin also fine?
What you mean by "fail to flash the two firmware" ?
As you already tried to flash the firmware it might be too late to do via CWM recovery provided by a certain rooted kernel which access via Volume-up + Power up + Home button.
ok i understand that cwm menu.. but how do i get to the update.zip file?

did you make a nandroid backup using clockworkmod recovery before you installed the custom rom? If you did, just boot into recovery and restore (volume down+power till you get a screen with recovery and download options, then press volume down till you highlight recovery and then press volume up to select it. Once in recovery go to nandroid->restore and choose the date you want to go back to)
If you did not make a backup, you can install the rom in the link below to go back to stock. However you will have to let market download all your apps again unless you have a backup of the apps and their data too using something like titanium backup.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327340
unfortunately i didnt keep a copy of my rom - i have downloaded the rom in the link and will install that.. Thanks
And this is how we learn the first rule of flashing. Always make a backup. If something were to go wrong during the flash and you could only enter recovery, a nandroid backup will be your best friend.
Have fun flashing!
totally agree with you - see what didnt make sense to me is did a back up of the rom and everything however as it was saved in my tablet so when i did the clean install it wiped away my data......
Did you wipe from stock recovery? Stock recovery will indeed wipe your internal storage. CWM recovery will not.

i am not sure however i followed this guide and seem to have got my tab back to its original shape..... http://p7510.teamovercome.net/?page_id=18

How to fully backup my WT19i?

Hi,
I root my phone and removed all bloat ware. I also did change some config files. Now I need to send my phone in to a service center because of that lame static noise you hear in the background. I need to reset it before sending it to the service to not lose warranty.
That's why I like to create a full backup, that I can restore after the phone returns. What solutions are there? I prefer simple ones of course.
Note, that I am no expert!
Thanks!
You can install CWM and then make a full backup you can get it here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pvy.CWMinstaler
after you install it reboot your phone
then a blue light will light up at the sony logo press volume down
you will enter the menu scroll down with volume down and go to restore and back up
choose backup
and when it's finished reboot your phone
then find the folder clockworkmod and copy the folder from your SD to computer in any case
After the service
1. root again your phone
2. install again the cwm
3. copy the back up file (if it is erase from sd) into the folder as it was before
4. reboot your phone
5.enter in cwm menu
6 go to the back up and restore...
7.do the restore and reboot the phone
that's all.. i guess i do not forget something....
you can wait also for other members to say their opinion..
Install cmw from market and perform backup during boot..

Do it like pipis87 explained, if you restore your phone after getting back, everything will be as before.
But now, when you copy the backup to your computer never ever rename it. It will be named with some numbers and if you rename, sometimes the md5 sum fails and your phone can't restore. So just copy from sd card/clockworkmod/backups/ to pc.
To get stock firmware just reset phone. That's best way and it won't change your rom to something like "generic world". But not sure if root is lost that way, better check it out before taking to service. Just give it a shot
Otherwise if you are on .42/.58 check this out
and another thing, i do not know if it has happen to other member but, if you are now in 4.0.4 rooted (if you are to GB do not continue reading), if you reset your phone to GB, after the service if you root first GB and then go to 4.0.4 rooted, the restore do it after you put 4.0.4 (it has happen to me and i was stuck to sony logo because i was trying to restore the 4.0.4 when i had GB)

I don't know exactly but it's better to be on Android 4.0.4 to restore 4.0.4 backup, not on gingerbreade...

[Q] Factory built-in firmware backup

Hello,
is there any easy way to backup my original factory firmware so after I flash a new ROM and I won't like it I can revert back to what factory gave me?
Best you can do is root your phone, and do a nandroid backup in CWRecovery before doing anything else to the phone (flashing a custom rom/kernel/etc). This will give you a 'snapshot' of your stock setup only with root, and all you'd need to do to unroot is flash a stock kernel.
Or you can simply flash a stock rom with Odin over whatever you have at the time.
There's no way to do what you're asking with a stock/unrooted phone.
As mentioned above u can't do it with out rooting. First root your phone without flashing any custom rom or kernel by pasting the zip file in ext sd and apply update using stock recovery. Then download recovery tools from play store and get your temporary cwm touch recovery. After this go to stock recovery and apply this zip. Then do a nandroid backup and reboot after it finishes. You'll have the exact stock rom, kernel and recovery. :good:

I know you guys here don't like such questions, but can I ask for links to that tools? I got S2 Root file but it has to be flashed via Odin. What recovery tools from Play Store? You mean this?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=pl
How can I get "my temporary CWM touch recovery"? What ZIP to apply then? Geez! Am I that stupid or it is just language issue? Hahaha

Dont worry dude. i'll try and explain as much as i can.
1. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 and choose the Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip or Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip from the attachments.
2. Paste it in your ext sd card and power off.
3. Reboot into recovery mode and choose apply update from sdcard and select the SuperSU file.
4. Now reboot your device and it will be successfully rooted and SuperSU will be installed.
5. Download temporary cwm recovery from their website or get it via recovery tools in play store. (link provided by you is correct except for different language i think )
6. Paste cwm.zip it in ext sd and reboot into recovery mode. apply update and you will get temporary cwm recovery.
7. Now you can take backup from it. it will backup all your data and both rom, kernel and even recovery will be stock.
Be careful while flashing roms or kernels though. :good:

[Q] Blank Screen when Restoring Stock Backup from CWM

Hi,
following the instructions on cyanogenmod.org, I have flashed CWM (using heimdall), then made a cwm backup of the stock rom, then installed CM10.1.3 stable. Works great.
Now I'm trying to restore my stock backup temporarily because I forgot to export my address book and my text messages (stupid me, I know). Of course, I have made a cwm backup of my CM first.
I wipe everything (factory reset in cwm), then restore my stock backup in cwm, and it goes through smoothly. However, when I reboot, after the Samsung logo there's the boot sound, and the screen goes blank completely. Nothing happens after that.
I can reboot (hold down power button forever), go back to cwm, and restore my CM backup, and everything works perfectly again. But I can't get my stock backup to work.
Can anyone help? Or is there a way to find the address book or text messages in the cwm backup files manually?
Thanks!
kingstah

You mean Android version? I believe stock was 4.04 (official OTA update quiet some time ago), the cwm Version is 6.06, I think. And CM10.1is Android 4.1.
Best thing you can to get it running is flash stock with Odin and forget about 4.0.4 nandroid. You see the 4.0.4 firmware has a bug which may brick you're phone. Don't factory reset whatever you do. Can you not mount as USB is recovery and get the data that way.?

Sorry, I just checked again, cwm is this, so JB 6.0.2.9:
http://cmw.cmfs.me/c1/recovery/GT-I9100_JB_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.2.9.tar
Regarding Android stock version, I'm not sure if it's 4.0.4 or 4.1.
I can access the nand backup easily, it is on the external SD - is it possible to get the address book out of the nand directly?
Thanks so much...
I'd concentrate on getting the phone up and running first as once you have a working phone, the options for recovering ur data get that much easier......example....I believe you can use titanium backup to retrieve data from nandroids.......
And as @andrewwright says.....stay away from 4.0.4
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM
Got it. What I did was
0) Make a complete cwm nandroid backup.
1) Restore only the /data partition of my old cwm nandroid backup using cwm, then stay in cwm recovery and copy my old contacts database to my computer:
Code:
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db
2) Use the dump-contacts2db script from the awesome project at https://github.com/stachre/dump-contacts2db to dump a vcf file from contacts2.db.
3) Restore the cwm nandroid backup made in 0).
4) Copy the vcf file to my phone and import it in contacts.
I found awesome advice here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/7851/restore-only-part-of-nandroid-image
and here: http://www.droidwiki.de/Datenwiederherstellung#Kontakte
Nice work and great feed back. Add solved to thread title.
