Unfortunately I don't have access to the swift key beta VIP and thus I am stuck with the stock keyboard. Are there currently any alternatives to the stock keyboard?

thumb keyboard by a large margin. Much more usable (at this point) than the swift key tablet beta.
the "tablet keyboard" is the best for me....

+1 for Thumb Keyboard. Quick buttons for the one-handed, normal qwerty, and split layouts are awesome.
Hacker's Keyboard is the way to go. Especially if you work with ssh sessions.
+1 for Thumb Keyboard! It works so well for me and you can change the layout to suit your own needs. If I remember right it isn't free but is well worth the money.

Thanks for the replies guys, ill check these out. Keep em coming.
+1 for thumb keyboard when typing with two hands in landscape mode.
+ 1 for swype 3.0 when typing with one finger or stylus.

Addicted to swype on my phone and thumb keyboard on my tablet.
In landscape, the swype strokes are just too long to be practical for me. Thumb is very fast and convenient while holding the tablet with two hands.
In landscape mode, contract the swype keyboard size and then move it to either the right or left edge, then you can swype just as you would on your cell!
Hi Guys.
Does anyone know where to get a keyboard that supports croatian characters?

I don't know about Croatian but I use Hacker's Keyboard with Romanian layout and it's perfect for me.

I like swype on my phone, and used it on my 10.1 for a while. One thing I missed on it with a tablet was the precision of a regular keyboard. I've been trying thumb keyboard for the last couple of day, and I'm liking it a lot. Feels like I can write with some speed and precision.
Btw, this is pretty good Thumb keyboard practice.
I love this community !!! I wasn't looking for a new keyboard but I'm glad I read this post. I'll add that SlideIt is a good alternative Dvorak on android

+1 for "tablet Keyboard free" not sure why but I keep going to it as my default (currently have FlexT9 Keyboard, GO Keyboard, samsung keypad, swiftkeytablet xbeta, swiftkey, and thumb keyboard).
tablet keyboard has an amazing layout, the keys are perfectly spaced for me and is the easiest for me to use, huge downside is that it doesnt have predictive text or spell check. If swiftkey could use their layout it would be perfect. Swiftkey is my default on my Tbolt, but the tablet version sucks, the keys are spaced weird and you cant reach the numbers in the middle so I dont use it as much.
Anybody using the tablet version of swiftkey? if so, how do you like it?
Pretty much the same as Swiftkey X for phones, which is both good and bad. The good: the predictive text is still very good. The bad: in portrait mode, the use of the screen real estate could definitely be better. The key layout is definitely small in relation to the tab and so is not very efficient in using the lower part of the tablet in my opinion.
I'd still recommend, and the developers seem ok in putting out updates and improvements, so hopefully the implementation will continue to improve.
I use swype and smartkeyboard pro on my phone. A friend was telling me about swiftkey and I saw they have a tablet version. Right now I am using swype. If we ever get the flyer/view permenantly rooted I want to remove swype so I can try the new beta for tablets. I guess I will skip the swiftkey and stay with swype and the stock keyboard for now.
I have it for both my evo 3d and flyer.. I like it on my evo 3d coz it sizes up better. On the flyer it seems a little too small. I prefer and recommend thumb keyboard over this. Hth

I recommend smart keyboard pro for portrait typing. It has very good layout and free from bug for fast typing job. Right now, there are still many juga from swiftkey X, especially uncontrolled type "." problem even the feature has been disabled from the setting.

Hi.
I have the SwiftKey X on the Flyer, and have been disappointed. The word prediction is very good, but that is where the excitement ended. The keys are too small (for me) , and I keep hitting the space bar when I try to hit the lowest row of letters. There is no easy way to switch between two languages; the arrows can not be activated; and center numeric pad is missing in landscape mode. The "*" sign is missing from the numeric panel, so if you do a lot of number/ formula entry (in spreadsheets) it gets frustrating. I use the notes a lot, and here the keyboard does not work at all (keeps overwriting the same letter).
I think this keyboard has great potential, and people doing a lot of typing should be able to type faster than with the stock keyboard. For me however it feels half-baked, and more frustrating than fun.
I am using swiftkey on my nexus s and there it is by far the best Keyboard. I purchased it for the flyer as well and was disappointed, too. As said before, the screen could be used a lot better in Portrait. I switched back to the original Keyboard.

I reccomend trying thumb keyboard first.

Have, it was ok but I'd rather have the arrow keys. I'm using harkers keyboard on my transformer right now.
Another vote for thumb keyboard. I have both and, while the predictive functioning of Swiftkey is better, the superior layout and ability to customize size of Thumb Keyboard makes for an easier typing experience overall.

I too, have both, and agree with what you've said.
I was not able to use Swiftkey X Tablet on my Flyer under Honeycomb in Landscape, since what I was writing was not visible (same with Swype).
This is now solved since the 2.1.0.223 version, as I just discovered. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.touchtype.swiftkey.tablet.trial

I know this thread is old but I wanted to share about the languages, the reason I use swift is because I don't need to switch languages. It is great at figuring out what I mean from whatever language I am using, I have it setup for spanish and english and it's seamless in that I don't need to worry about it.
This is MUCH better than having to press a button and manually switching languages.
I find Swiftkey X Tablet to be wonderful on the Flyer and you can resize the keyboard to your desires in the settings. I only wish they would put the arrow keys htat are in the phone version back into the tablet version
SwiftKey is all I'll use (til something better comes out... Lol) I can't afford to buy both versions, so I use the phone version on my tab & phone, and it works great!
I "borrowed" the Tab version from a friend, and got kinda frustrated by it entering words for me after entering a period, then hitting space twice (proper punctuation).

Ok, here is a list of Apps which I really love so far and think its cool..
-Video wall paper (not an app, and it can only be access via livewall paper): I can put my baby video as a live wallpaper, how cool is that
-Koi Live wall paper
-Widgets!!! Love this, now I dont have to stare at sea of Icons... to name a few (Android Agenda Widget: much better than the stock one) (world weather clock widget)(Silent toggle widget)(Battery widget, tells me the percentage left and one click goes to battery usage)(stock clock + weather, just like how it looks: more than the HTC look and feel)
-Kies (good to be wireless, but I guess iphone will also have wireless now: and no iTunes hated the need to use it for everything and its bloatware slow)
-Financial Calculator (replaces my 9 in 1 calculator)
-Hangping Chinese pro (kinda replaces my qingwen)
-Juice Defender pro (it does help some)
-ringdroid (make my own ring tones for free)
-photo + video vault + quickOffice (kinda replaces my iFiles but not really)
-Root explorer
-smart app protector
-Bloomberg (only app that tells me international indexes)
-Unit Converter (Not free anymore on iPhone, I was grandfather so had a free one)
-Unblock me free (replaces my blue blocks)
-touchPal (I really like this keyboard, its a mix of swype + touch)
-less bloatware when rooting vs jailbreak (sorry, I think the cydia packages were heavy, but lots of FREE apps )
Oh, a trick I found was to subscribe your Holiday calenders on google calendars, then click on the few holidays to add to your OWN calendar. Then when you sync, you will now have all the holidays on your phone. Not sure if there was a better way, but this was so nice..
Please let me know what else i may really like.. love my SGS2 so far..
Thanks nice Info

if you want to save on battery, stay away from the live wallpapers. I know they look cool but they really murder your battery

Unless I'm missing something totally obvious.
I can never seem to get that correction flag where it needs to be.

With Swype, just swype from the "Swype" key (bottom-left corner) over to the layout selector key (next one over: SYM or ABC). This will change to a Swype layout with arrow keys, page up/down, select all, home, end, cut-copy-page, etc. It's pretty handy when you need such things. Then just tap the "ABC" key to jump back to the regular Swype layout.
There may be another way to get to the arrow-key layout, but that is just the way I discovered, by mistake.

If you use swype just swype from the swype symbol to the number button right next to it.

The two that I like the most are:
1. Go SMS Pro. Much better than the stock sms program.
2. Zedge. Thousands of ring/text tones and wallpapers.
3. Smart Keyboard Pro. Hands down the best keyboard for android...

Used to always use Swype keyboard but due to silly things like it not adding spaces in certain places even though it set to do that & the Swype Connect backup causing severe battery drain & lots of wakelocks I went back to SwiftKey which is a lot quicker than it used to be & works great.
Thanks everyone. Yeah I was trying Swype but it wasn't working great and I didn't really like the stock Xperia keyboard. Switched to SwiftKey and very happy.

I can vouch for Swiftkey, but I do like the stock Xperia Keyboard. The one thing I like better with Swiftkey is that it is good when typing in multiple languages.

You definitely should give TouchPal a chance. It's free and the prediction and multi language input is amazing...
I prefer it to Swype or Swiftkey because it has some nice features they don't have (Swype up on special signs instead of holding the button pressed... )

SwiftKey is my favourite, and has been for a long time now.
So happy that there's a Japanese Beta and that I'm in it for the testing phase
I've decided to give the Minuum keyboard a try. Takes some getting used to but seems to work well and not take up much of the screen.

tried most keyboards but stuck to Swype for their select all/cut/copy/paste shortcuts as well as number pad.
only gripe is that it doesn't autospace as mentioned, though only in dolphin.
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
The best keyboard is definitely SwiftKey, however the best keyboard to swipe with is Swype. SwiftKey swipe feature is terrible, I slide from Y to O and it suggests then I want to use the word "to" which is just silly since I didn't even tap on T.
Auto space works for me in Swype, it just doesn't show the space until you type the word, it just uses a different method to achieve the same result.
I gave up on the stock keyboard and started using the google one. I was fine with it until it had a small fit when I was using Google+ and I wanted to include someone in a post and the auto correct function had a little fit.
Google keyboard for me all day long. It's spaced out really well and the white highlight suits the theme I'm running. If the auto-correct is grinding your gears go to settings in Google Keyboard (in Language & input) > Auto-correction > "Modest" setting seems to make it less skintish. Also (creepy as it is) the personalised suggestions works well by dragging words you use regularly on other Google services into your texts

As others have mentioned, Swype is great for swyping. Swiftkey is great for traditional typing, its tracing feature is very average and not as fast.
Wordwave is more of an unknown that is quite good for tracing and decent input prediction so kind of in between swipe and swift but it looks great with many customisations.
Adaptx is getting there, it traces and types with great features.
Touchpal has been mentioned and I like this one. Has the best of both worlds too, reasonably accurate, easy access to emoticons etc and takes predictive tracing typing to the next stage on how you can drag predicted words to the spacebar to type.
Kii is also a great accurate tracing keyboard and traditional typing not bad with it as well.
Quickwrite is also another that does tracing and typing and looks very stock. Its not bad.
Theres actually quite a few more ive used over time, just cant remember them right now lol.
Im constantly changing as I can never settle on a perfect keyboard but my pick is touchpal, swype, swift and wordwave.
Enjoying the tablet so far but the icons are just too big, so installed Nova Launcher hoping that would quickly solve the problem.
When you rotate the display to landscape the dock stays on the right ( which in itself is weird, and it's unclear where you swipe from to bring up the app draw. When swiping from the right you get a weird menu.
I use Nova Launcher on all my devices usually and this is the first time I've seen this, maybe it's just because I havent done a fresh install of Nova Launcher for while but this seems messed up.
I'm sure there are probably options in ths settings to change all of this (probably take a hour of more to find) but damn, why does it default to this now?? :silly:
Hi,
I had the same problem.
Solution: go to system settings, display, zoom, and then set the zoom level to minimum.
Then the dock is at the right place.

Zoom? Will try this later, you've hopefully saved me an hour of faffing around in the settings.
@winmentat01 you're a legend mate. That fixed it for me. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it a Samsung bug or a Nova one?
Thanks, that worked for me also.
If you want even smaller icons and user interface, use the options in the Developer settings > Minimum width. If you make the value bigger, the interface become smaller. The default setting is 800. For example 960 works just great and all apps become PC-like experience.
